The horrors of human trafficking are in the news and the subject of recent movies and shows that dramatize this subject. The reality and portrayals of human trafficking are sickening but rarely capture the scope of activities that are considered human trafficking and the frequency of its occurrence. It turns out, human trafficking is all around us. Fr. Terry Moran is an expert and sought-after speaker on the topic. He is also the Director, Office of Peace, Justice and Ecological Integrity of the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth. Listen to my conversation with Fr. Terry as we discuss: The broad range of activities that are included in the definition of human trafficking. The scope of human trafficking around the world, and especially in the Unitied States. It is so much greater than you know. The most common types of human trafficking and the common characteristics of its victims. The “Demand” component to human trafficking and how we can combat it. With human trafficking all around us, what the average person do to recognize it and help its victims, Fr. Terry's work combating human trafficking in all its manifestations. …and so much more. “Human trafficking is becoming one of the most lucrative forms of international trade,” says Fr. Terry. “Some people estimate that it makes more money than drug trafficking, and ironically the penalties for human trafficking in some states are less than those for drug trafficking.” “ We need to educate young people,” Fr Moran continues. “I give a lot of talks to high school students.” “I asked the young people, particularly young women, whether they've been in a mall whensomeone comes up to them and says ‘You're very pretty; have you ever consider a career as a model'?” “A very large number of the girls I speak with,” Fr Moran says,” have had this experience.” “That's just one typical ploy of the human trafficker,” he warns. You can learn more about Fr. Terry, the Sisters of Charity, or their work to combat human trafficking and aid its victims at www.scnj.org Or contact Fr. In Part 2 of the conversation, Keeya talked about her redemption story and how God continues to play the biggest role in her life. She is a survivor expert, student of life, a wife and mother, and missionary. A powerful voice of hope in a growing ecosystem of despair, her motivation and passion for youth and women of all ages is inextricably linked to her own story of hardship and survival against insurmountable odds.As an author, speaker, and advocate, she connects viscerally with audiences, and is known for her uncanny ability to help others make real emotional connections with otherwise obscure realities. Her current work is centered on advocacy in collaboration with organizations that rescue women and children from the sex trafficking industry.Black Girls are disproportionately ‘at risk' of being trafficked in the United States and their stories often go untold for reasons far more complicated than mere reporting, or statistical oversight. Keeya was lured with the opportunity to escape the abusive and tumultuous home life and faced with the prospect of meeting some of the biggest and most influential names in the music industry. She was exploited for years at the hands of many traffickers. With her book, One Thousand Elsewhere: A True Survivor Story, she broke her silence and gives the reader a seat to the table of her story. The planet is warming. This isn't conjecture and it isn't political: it's the overwhelming conclusion of climate scientists from all over the world. Now, for a long time, the debate has been over whether and how we mitigate the threats posed by climate change. But Alice C. Hill warns that debate needs to be expanded to include a discussion about the things we must do to adapt human existence to a warmer planet. Hill is the David M. Rubenstein senior fellow for energy and the environment at the Council on Foreign Relations. Her work focuses on the risks, consequences, and responses associated with climate change. Hill previously served as special assistant to President Barack Obama and senior director for resilience policy on the National Security Council staff where she led the development of national policy to build resilience to catastrophic risks, including climate change and biological threats. Her coauthored book, “Building a Resilient Tomorrow,” was published in 2019. In 2020, Yale University and the Op-Ed Project awarded her the Public Voices Fellowship on the Climate Crisis. Hill's new book, “The Fight for Climate After COVID-19,” was published in September 2021. In 2009, Hill served as Senior Counselor to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in which she led the formulation of DHS's first-ever climate adaptation plan and the development of strategic plans regarding catastrophic biological and chemical threats, including pandemics. While at the Department of Homeland Security, Hill founded and led the internationally recognized anti-human trafficking initiative, the Blue Campaign. Earlier in her career, Hill served as supervising judge on both the superior and municipal courts in Los Angeles and as chief of the white-collar crime prosecution unit in the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney's office. The Department of Justice awarded her its highest accolade, the John Marshall Award for Outstanding Legal Achievement. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Annika Mack, originally from Denver, Colorado, was a runaway youth and victim of human trafficking as a teenager. As a survivor, Ms. Mack showed incredible strength and courage by testifying against her trafficker, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Today Ms. Mack is a survivor advocate and mentor who speaks publicly to raise awareness and educate communities on the issue of human trafficking. She is one of twelve survivors on the state of California's Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) action team and advisory board, through which she contributes the creation of policies. She has lobbied for statewide human trafficking bills and has spoken on the topic in juvenile halls, for statewide programs such as Victims of Crime, and was selected as a keynote speaker at multiple conferences through the United States. Ms. Mack lends her expertise on the issue of human trafficking by serving as a contractor with The Blue Campaign for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and by training various organizations, hospitals, tattoo shops, and hotels to recognize the signs of human trafficking. She appears in an anti-trafficking documentary titled “Can You See Me Now?” Ms. Mack believes strongly in this quote by Harriet Tubman, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”

GUYS! This is seriously the best episode of the year! This MIGHT be our best episode EVER! First in memorandum of those we just lost that no one was aware of, Hieu breaks down for JLo the menu items that have been removed secretly from Taco Bell's menu. THEN!!!! Hieu and J-Lo go deep into the "Blue Campaign" a federal anti-human trafficking website the government made. It's awful. And we tear it apart. Enjoy! This is one of those episodes worth sharing with others!

We discuss the international and legal framework, whether the United States is meeting its international obligations and consider particular issues relating to diplomatic immunity when human trafficking is committed by diplomats in the United States. We also discuss prosecutions under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act and the application of its mandatory restitution provisions. Additionally, we discuss U.S. government awareness programs such as the Blue Campaign and their effectiveness and the best legislative and litigation strategies for eliminating this egregious crime. For More Info:http://www.htlegalcenter.org/https://scholarship.law.duke.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?http://law.slu.edu/sites/default/files/Journals/alexandra_levy-martina_vandenberg-article.pdfhttp://www.htlegalcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/FF_SL_AW02_WEB.pdfhttp://www.ilo.org/global/topics/forced-labour/lang--en/index.htmhttps://www.dol.gov/ilab/reports/child-labor/list-of-goods/https://www.americanbar.org/groups/domestic_violence/survivor-reentry-project.htmlhttp://www.ohchr.org/EN/ProfessionalInterest/Pages/ProtocolTraffickingInPersons.aspxhttps://www.globalslaveryindex.org/https://www.dhs.gov/blue-campaign/awareness-traininghttps://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/blue-campaignhttps://www.state.gov/j/tip/https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/115/s2308
