This week on the show, the great Yuka Honda. She's a New York musician. In the 1990s, she emerged from the fertile New York music underground with Cibo Matto alongside groups like the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, and Luscious Jackson. She's collaborated with an extensive roster of musicians, including John Zorn,David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Sean Ono Lennon, and her husband, guitarist Nels Cline. Earlier this year, we taped the conversation you're about to hear. Some of it ran as text in the Across the Horizon zine that was available at Big Ears Music Fest. What is Across the Horizon? Well, it's a collaborative series from Bob Holmes of Suss and Northern Spy Records gathering together like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate in a double LP compilation of stellar sonic explorations on August 13th. Under her Eucademix banner, Yuka has explored experimental electronics via two semi recent Farm Psychedelia EPs and her Across The Horizon contribution “A Long Slow Blink Before The Answer.” In this conversation, we get into food, art, language, and much more. Luke Schneider is the Founder and CEO of Fire Dept. Coffee, a certified veteran-owned coffee company. Fire Dept. Coffee gives back to and supports injured firefighters and has been named to the Inc. 5000 list three years in a row. Luke is also a retired firefighter, paramedic, and US Navy veteran. In 2023, he received the Leadership award for Citizenship from the Specialty Food Association. In this episode… In a business environment dominated by duplicate products, brands must employ creative measures to stand out and capture consumers' attention. This requires more than having a widespread presence on popular social media apps. How did a community-focused coffee brand gain recognition in thousands of Walmart locations? Former firefighter and US Navy veteran Luke Schneider credits his coffee company's growth to a robust community presence and a resonant mission. He emphasizes building a local community to convey your mission and cultivate a brand identity. For a broader reach, you can communicate your message on various social media platforms by targeting audiences who align with your mission to differentiate your products in the market. Luke maintains that a motivated team and influential culture can promote your community efforts and amplify your mission. In today's episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris chats with Luke Schneider, the Founder and CEO of Fire Dept. Coffee (FDC), about building a robust community and team to scale. Luke discusses social selling, FDC's subscription offers, and how the company received its first publicity and navigated a trademark lawsuit.
Welcome to the penultimate episode of our ninth season, featuring Pat Irwin of Suss. You may remember him from last year's Suss talk, with his bandmates Jonathan Gregg and Bob Holmes, but he's back for a solo talk this time, which allowed us to dig into his wild life in music, from his time in the the late ‘70s New York No Wave scene with The Raybeats and 8-Eyed Spy, to his work with Southern freak icons The B-52s, and his long career crafting music for TV and animation, including shows like Rocko's Modern Life and Bored to Death. Things have been very, very busy on the Suss front. This year, Irwin contributed guitars, keyboards, harmonium, and loops to Suss' fifth album, Birds & Beasts. On top of that, Suss' Bob Holmes, who also hosts the must-listen Ambient Country podcast, has launched Across the Horizon, a collaboration with Northern Spy Records that brings on board various like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Transmissions guests like Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate next year in a double LP comp. In this thrilling episode, we're back with the Australian bull riding sensation, Josh Birks, as he shares jaw-dropping stories from the heart of the rodeo world.Josh takes us to the Mataranka Rodeo for the Bucking Thunder Down Under event, an unforgettable experience that even drew the legendary Jason Ahern. He recalls witnessing some of the best bull riding ever, including a remarkable 88.5-point performance at Beaudesert, where fifth place was achieved. However, the conversation takes a somber turn as Josh recounts a tragic incident at Mataranka. Dwayne Fishlock, a bull owner, embarked on a helicopter mission to retrieve his bulls for the rodeo. Tragically, the helicopter hit a powerline near the Mataranka gates, resulting in Dwayne's untimely passing. The aftermath was marked by police and investigators covering the scene with tarps. The next day, Josh woke up to an unexpected scene—a friend with a 20-litre drum full of rum and a trench gun. Shots of rum flowed, and the locals arrived for the rodeo, unaware that it had been canceled due to the accident. Spontaneously, one of the bull owners released scrub bulls, allowing the locals to have their own makeshift rodeo. It escalated to a boxing match, with Alley Cat, a local, knocking out one of the lads, Carter. They even attempted to retrieve a hundred-dollar note from a massive Brahman bull's nose, leading to chaos as the bull tossed Josh and another local over the fence. The antics continued into the night, with a fellow rider's hair being set on fire, prompting him to shout, "Who's lighting fires around here?" The group donned boxing gloves and playfully sparred. From this unforgettable day, professional bulls like Prison Break, Wild Willy, and two others emerged, adding to the lore of Australian rodeo.Josh reflects on his Australian bull riding idol, Troy Dunn, for his massive contributions to the sport, as well as his American idol, JB Mauney, a true cowboy and legendary figure. But his ultimate idol is Luke Schneider, embodying the perfect blend of professionalism and a party lifestyle.Join us for a rollercoaster of rodeo tales, from tragic accidents to epic fights and the legends who have left an indelible mark on the world of bull riding.#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast.
