For the Glory KC is back with the 112th episode of the show. While there weren't any signings (don't worry, we address that too), Sporting Kansas City did have a fairly big week. The 2025 MLS schedule came out, Sporting KC had a rumored signing, they drafted three players and announced a section of preseason is open to the public with a couple games that you can actually go watch. On the schedule front, Sporting KC open their season on the road against Austin FC before returning home to face the San Jose Earthquakes on March 1st (good to catch them before Bruce Arena rights that ship). The Quakes game will actually be their fourth game in all competitions when they play four times in 12 days with two Inter Miami games sandwiched around the Austin game for CONCACAF Champions Cup competition. While that's a tough schedule, it's not nearly as bad as the month of May. Sporting KC play seven times in May, including two stretches of three games in eight days. It's by far their busiest month of the season, pending US Open Cup involvement. One of those stretches is three straight road games, a trip to Portland, a trip to St. Louis and then back to the west coast to face San Diego FC for the first time in Cali. The schedule makers clearly hate KC. Honestly, it's probably just incompetence. Sheena and I weigh in with our best road trips for our family and yours. Sheena had a top trip, but then a bunch of reasons to basically go see any other team in the league. I was a little narrower in my focus. What we could both agree on, was that going to the first game at an opponent's stadium is always exciting. There is one chance to do that this year, San Diego FC. They topped both lists, with a few other key games standing out for us too. The game we are likely making our annual road trip to a new stadium to is the Houston Dynamo (I guess). Then we get into the Geronimo Rivera rumor, those preseason details and the three SuperDraft picks. Finally, we turn our attention to a team making actual roster moves. The KC Current made two more signings with a third on the way. The team traded for midfielder Rocky Rodriguez and signed free agent Laurel Ivory. On top of that, our own Thad Bell confirmed Brazilian National Team goalkeeper Lorena will be announced soon. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few more topics, including: SKC U-13s success Netflix is the home of the 2027 and 2031 Women's World Cups Former KC Current players on the move Becky Sauerbrunn retired NWSL Expansion Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC get their 2025 Schedule - 5:56 Another SKC Rumor: Geronimo Rivera - 42:15 Some of SKC's preseason is open to the public - 50:33 Three new Sporting KC Draft Picks - 56:26 KC Current keep making moves - 1:10:34 Digital Crawl - 1:19:01 As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. We have a legend, basketball royalty, and an all-time great in the house today. He is known as the Holy Hand and it is a true honor to have Hall of Famer Oscar Schmidt hang out and share his hoops story with us. The love, passion, and loyalty that he showed on the court to his teammates, country, and the game of basketball is now told in his own words.Oscar Schmidt is without a doubt one of the greatest players to ever play the game. We can’t possibly include all of his achievements in this summary because they are truly endless. He has scored over 49,000 career points with the most points in FIBA, Olympics, and even all of basketball history. Oscar helped lead Brazil to a historic victory over the USA in the 1987 Pan Am games where he torched the Americans scoring 35 of his 46 points in the second half. This game was considered one of the main reasons why the 1992 Dream Team was formed. Oscar was selected in that legendary 1984 NBA Draft but chose not to play out of loyalty to his country so he could play for his National Team instead. Players such as Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant and many others idolized Oscar, and any NBA great knows what an incredible player he was.Our time with Oscar was life-changing. He shared some incredible stories about growing up in Brazil, playing for the National Team, defeating the USA, The 92 Dream Team, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, playing for the Nets in the Summer League, the story behind the nickname “The Holy Hand”, Hall of Fame, and MUCH more. We can’t say enough how much this conversation meant to us and how special of an experience this was to learn from an all-time great. We know you will appreciate this one just as much as we did.Thank you Oscar Schmidt! You can find this episode on Apple, Spotify or any source for podcasts!Follow us on social media!Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notin.myhouse.79Instagram- @Not_in_my_house_podcastTwitter - @NOTINMYHOUSEpc
This one is special for many different reasons and fan bases. Our local Reno and Vegas listeners will absolutely remember how big time of a player he was at Bishop Gorman, whereas our BYU fan base will remember him for his sacrifices to better the team. Jonathan Tavernari is in the house today and we are excited to have him! His mother is a legendary hoops coach who helped push him to be considered as the top high school player to ever come out of Brazil. He moved to America where he starred at Bishop Gorman. He went on to have an outstanding career at BYU where he earned MWC Freshman of the year, and All-MWC Third Team in both his sophomore and junior seasons while also setting a program record both years for three points made. He sacrificed his starting spot to be the team’s 6th man during his senior season where he earned the MWC 6th man of the year. Tavernari finished his career at BYU as the winningest player in school history and holds the school record for 3 pointers made. He has had continued great success playing overseas and for the Brazilian National Team.We loved our time with Tavernari. He shared some great stories about growing up in Brazil, Oscar Schmidt, playing through the legal distractions at Bishop Gorman, State game vs Reno High School, BYU, experience overseas, his love for Vegas and MUCH more. One thing we learned is that he is as passionate as you get both on and off the court. He is a high character guy who always put others and the team before himself. JT always found a way on the court, but of off the court? We know the best is yet to come.Thank you Jonathan Tavernari!

We talk with Renato Paiva, who is the CEO, or Executive Director of Access Youth Academy in San Diego, California. Access Youth is part of the Network of S-E-A, Squash Education Alliance, a non-profit After School Youth program, combing Squash training and Academic enrichment. Renato, has been leading the charge in San Diego since 2007 and on top of his role with Access Youth, he’s been raising awareness for the sport on the West Coast to inspire more growth of Squash. One of his students, Reyna Pacheco, is an inspiring example of how a dedicated Coach can remarkably impact the trajectory of a person’s life and their family. As an undocumented immigrant, Reyna went from a novice squash player, to playing Varsity at Columbia before turning Pro. Reyna has since retired as Professional but moved onto the Financial sector working at Goldman Sachs. This player/Coach story is now encapsulated in ‘Hollywood’ history, by Apple TV filming their story for the series Little America and highlights just one of the impactful stories Access Youth delivers for all students involved. The dream for many programs like Access Youth Academy, is to have their own dedicated squash facility. In order to secure a permanent home in San Diego, Renato and the Board of Directors had to be resilient against the ups & downs, twists and turns that these projects usually endure before success. Essentially, Renato was deploying the same cores message he shares every day with his students “small things, every day, for a long period of time…that’s how change happens!” And what does success look like? Millions of dollars raised, a $5.5 Million Grant from the City of San Diego, all towards building a home for this non-profit to help serve more students. Before being Executive Director, he was originally from Brazil. As a junior squash player, Renato played for the Brazilian National Team. After graduating from college in Brazil, made the move the United States, Coaching at Harvard University before making the move out West. Renato has boundless energy and channels it to drive the growth of Squash on the West Coast and propel the lives of his Student to a better tomorrow. We hope you enjoy the conversation! ***************************************************************We are always looking for new stories and love your help! Today we are joined by Gregg Bocketti, Professor of History at Transylvania University, and author of The Invention of the Beautiful Game: Football and the Making of Modern Brazil(University Press of Florida, 2016). In our conversation, we discussed the transplantation of European sports to Brazil, the rising success of the Brazilian national team in the 1920s and 1930s, and the development of O Jogo Bonito style of play. In The Invention of the Beautiful Game, Bocketti takes on the traditional nationalist narrative of Brazilian football, which suggests that their successful teams of the interwar and postwar era, which occurred following the shift from foot-ball to futebol in Brazil, arose from the countries specific cultural and racial heritage. Brazilian soccer’s triumphs emerged from the successes of its racial democracy. Bocketti’s unique organization illustrates the contradictions in this national myth through five thematic chapters. He analyses the grafting of European sports in Brazil, the role of elite clubs in Rio and Sao Paulo played in shaping Brazilian social classes, the internationalization of Brazilian football, the function of women and respectability in shaping the fan environment, and the rise of O Jogo Bonito (the beautiful game) style of play. He shows that the so-called beautiful game era did not inaugurate uncomplicated gender and racial relations in sports. Similarly, the elite sportsmen that founded Brazil’s most esteemed sporting clubs were neither as close-minded as previous histories assume and even as players of color made their appearance on the Brazilian National Team, white, upper class men maintained their influence throughout the Vargas era. Bocketti’s work will appeal to readers interested in Brazilian soccer but also more broadly to people in the fields of Brazilian and Latin American history and scholars of sports during the 19th and 20th centuries. Keith Rathbone is a lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He researches twentieth-century French social and cultural history. His manuscript, entitled A Nation in Play: Physical Culture, the State, and Society during France’s Dark Years, 1932-1948, examines physical education and sports in order to better understand civic life under the dual authoritarian systems of the German Occupation and the Vichy Regime.
