Hello friends! Austin based singer-songwriter Taylor Rae is my guest for episode 1474! Taylor's new album, The Void, produced by Grammy winner Eric Krasno drops on April 18th and she's celebrating with a release show on April 23rd at The 04 Center here in Austin. Go to taylorraemusic.com for music, tour dates, and more. Taylor's song "Breezeblocks" has over 7 million plays and NPR named her one of the top 10 artists they saw at SXSW 2025. We have a great conversation about growing up in Santa Cruz, California, studying vocal performance at The Musician's Institute, living in L.A., moving to Austin just before the pandemic, making The Void, and much more. I had a great time getting to know Taylor. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. If you feel so inclined.
This is a special bonus episode for LSQ listeners of a podcast I had an excellent time collaborating on, as producer, with alt-J. Things Will Get Better is a five-episode podcast miniseries that explores the U.K. band's early days, and the making of their incredible, groundbreaking debut album, An Awesome Wave, in honor of its tenth anniversary. Within the series, the band revisit Ash Grove, the old college house where they played their first gig and wrote songs like "Matilda" and "Breezeblocks," as well as other favorite haunts in Leeds; they discover and listen back to long lost demos, including for the song that lends the series its name and fan favorites such as "Portrait" and "Hiroshima"; they catch up with their longtime producer, Charlie Andrew, and their former bandmate, Gwil Sainsbury; and in the episode I'm sharing, I interview the band, LSQ-style, focusing on their childhood encounters with creativity and how their music practices and passions evolved from there. If you like this one, check out the others at anchor.fm/anawesomewave
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of their groundbreaking, Mercury Prize-winning debut album, An Awesome Wave, alt-J explore their early history together, over the course of the upcoming five episodes. In Episode 1, they return to their old university house in Leeds, known as Ash Grove after the street it's on. There, they revisit major moments from those days, from meeting on campus in 2007 while studying in various arts and literature classes together, to playing their first-ever show in the living room of Ash Grove, to writing and demoing songs like “Matilda” and “Breezeblocks” in the attic room upstairs, and more. They also give a walking tour of beloved local sites, including the legendary Brudenell Social Club and other regular haunts – a greasy spoon diner called Popina's, the Eldon, where Joe first took mushrooms, and the Library Bar, where they played frequently in those early days, in the lead-up to recording An Awesome Wave. *** In addition to celebrating An Awesome Wave with this podcast, alt-J have joined forces with premium social live media platform Moment for a worldwide digital performance, set for Wednesday, October 19 (North America/Europe/United Kingdom/Africa) and Thursday, October 20 (Australia/NZ & Asia). Recorded May 17, 2022 at Brixton, London's world famous O2 Academy, the concert sees alt-J performing An Awesome Wave in its entirety, joined on stage by Gwil Sainsbury for the band's first single, “Bloodflood,” as well as the album-closing epic, “Taro.” In addition, the ticketed event features an additional set showcasing greatest hits and fan favorites from alt-J's subsequent body of work, spanning 2014's This Is All Yours, 2017's Relaxer, and 2022's internationally acclaimed new album, The Dream. Tickets to the digital concert event – along with a limited edition line of official 10th anniversary An Awesome Wave merchandise – are available now HERE, exclusively via Moment. Ticket buyers will automatically get access to video-on-demand (VOD) upon purchase, allowing them to view the event for up until 24 hours after the end of the official streaming premiere. Fans who miss the premiere can still buy VOD up until three hours before the 24-hour VOD window closes, ensuring ample time to watch (or re-watch) the event.

Blake AJ stops by to discuss three videos with totally normal, predictable endings. They start with (and probably spend way too much time on) Carly Rae Jepson's 2011 summer jam Call Me Maybe getting deep into the tattoos of the love interest and his aunt's midlife crisis. Then they have a split opinion on Alt J's Breezeblocks while trying to unpack it's complicated backwards narrative and decide how hard is too hard to throw your keys. They (finally) end with The Prodigy's controversial video for their controversial song Smack My B***h Up, and Blake get's maybe a bit too into the bathroom habits of the protagonist. Plus they settle some beef surrounding Eminem's Stan and Matthew shows off his light switch expertise. Yup, just a fun conversations about three normal ending videos. No surprises here…or is there? Please rate, review and subscribe wherever you can. It really helps the show. And tell a friend! Thanks. Gus Unger-Hamilton is the keyboard player/vocalist for the band alt-J. The group is a three-piece band from Leeds, England. They formed in 2007 but it wasn't until 2012 that their first studio album An Awesome Wave was released. To date, they've released three studio albums which include hits like Breezeblocks, Left Hand Free and In Cold Blood. On top of the Mercury Prize, alt-J were also nominated for three Brit Awards and were also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative music Album in 2015.
