** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 16: Denver-based keyboardist, drummer, producer and composer DeShawn Alexander, leader of the group Watermelon Funk. Spending his childhood as a church organist and later attending the Berklee College of Music, his repertoire has spanned funk, hip hop, blues, jazz and rock. Artists he has worked or shared the stage with include Marcus King, Lettuce, Eric Krasno, Talib Kweli, Joe Louis Walker, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and Robert Randolph. Heavily inspired by Parliament-Funkadelic, and especially Bernie Worrell, since 2021 Watermelon Funk has released three fantastic albums, including 2024's Afrodesiac – which features Garrett Shider and was named among FUNKNSTUFF's Top 25 Funk & Rock Albums of the Year. RECORDED DECEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with musician and bandleader Andy Frasco. Frasco, celebrated for his good time spirit, is a tireless and consummate showman who plays some 250 concert dates a year with his band, Andy Frasco & The U.N., and has been doing so since he was 19. His band's sound has been described as "blues-rock fueled by reckless abandonment and a disregard for the rules, with witty lyrics to back it all up.” This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast is dedicated to Frasco's latest album, entitled Growing Pains. Produced by Frasco himself for the first time, Growing Pains acts as a tribute to his 15-year journey in music, and the group's landmark 10th studio album showcases his growth as songwriter and frontman. Growing Pains features assists from brilliant musicians such as Billy Strings, Eric Krasno, and G. Love, and it's a refreshingly introspective album full of self-flection and weighty, relatable themes, while still being a hell of a good time. In this episode hosts Michael Shields and Andy Frasco discuss the themes present in Growing Pains and what it meant to him to produce the album personally. They dig into Frasco's growth as a musician and songwriter, why he decided to record songs for Growing Pains in Nashville, his excellent World Saving Podcast, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. Jamband alert for this week's episode with Jen Meyerhardt!! Jen is co-owner and co-producer of Northlands Music and Arts Festival taking place June 14-15 in Swanzey, NH and talked to me about her impressive history in the legal jungle and how that prepared her for the live events production world.A native of New Canaan, CT, with a law degree and years of experience in Silicon Valley, Jen is also a long-time jamband fan and lover of live music, who now brings her impressive life experiences and go-getter attitude to even greater heights. We talked what it means to truly lean into her lifelong passion for live music to bring some of the industry's premier jam bands to play a humble New Hampshire hamlet year after year. It's an inspiring story of following one's dream, listening to the music play, and heeding the call to see where it all may take you. Jen's long strange trip serves as an inspiration to all, while perhaps more importantly, her journey represents a shining beacon and role model for diversity and women's representation at the highest level of live music events, and I'm all about it!! Drummer Stanton Moore and guitarist Eric Krasno team up on a new trio project with Eric Finland on keys in this exclusive KNKX studio session performance.
I first heard about the Krasno/Moore project featuring guitarist Eric Krasno and drummer Stanton Moore a few months ago when I was talking to Kras about King Canyon. This project is an organ trio that also includes keyboard player Eric Finland. While Kras and Stanton have played together and collaborated live, up until now they've never recorded together. Their forthcoming record Book of Queens out March 17th, is filled with contemporary covers and classic tunes original created by well known female singers. The Krasno/Moore project re-invents these tunes for their trio, and the results are impressive. I had the chance to catch up with Stanton Moore a few weeks ago before the trip made their first few live dates in this configuration. You can hear my interview with Krasno from January here: https://www.thesoundpodcast.com/eric-krasno/ If you're interested you can listen to a live Krasno/Moore Project performance here: https://archive.org/details/KrasnoMooreProject2023-03-10.SBD.Matrix.Flac24. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth ----- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to. Tomo Fujita has been a professional guitarist for over thirty years and a faculty member at Berklee College of Music since 1993. Tomo's philosophy, distilled into a one-liner, is that music is not just about playing; it's about emotional expression. He teaches students to inject emotion into every phrase, whether the style is blues, jazz, funk or rock. Although he has resided in the United States for three decades, Tomo remains closely connected with musicians and the music business in his native Japan. He visits for a quick tour two or three times each year. Japanese guitar players have bought more than 160,000 copies of his (Japanese language) instructional books and videos. Tomo has performed with some of the best, including Will Lee, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Steve Jordan, Susan Tedeschi, Phil Collins, John Mayer, James Gadson, Travis Carlton, James Genus, Kenwood Dennard, Darryl Jones, Lemar Carter, Paul Jackson and Janek Gwizdala. When he is not performing on his own, Tomo likes to sit in with others, like Ronnie Earl, Coco Montoya, Eric Gales, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher, and Matt Schofield. Tomo has been an instructor to many great players over the years. The most famous of his former students is John Mayer. Tomo and John stay in touch to this day. Pictured above is a guitar that John signed for Tomo, next to the factory signature. Check out the video of these guys playing together during John's 2008 visit to Berklee, in the sidebar. Tomo also taught Eric Krasno of “Soulive” and Adam (“Shmeeans”) Smirnoff of “Lettuce” at Berklee. And there are three entertaining videos in the sidebar on this page featuring another former Berklee student: Tyler Larson, a shredder who has become an impressive teacher of guitar and music theory.

Collabs Gone Wild is the ultimate guest sit-in game, where the jams are made up and the points don't matter. Two artists are drawn each round for a potential collaboration. Is the world missing out on musical greatness or are some notes best not played? What kind of horror would be drummed up if Miles Davis sat in with Rob Zombie? Would Flea grooving Khruangbin be too epic or the greatest set the band ever played? Is the jury still out on Janis Joplin and Prince hanging out? We'll get to the bottom of these hypothetical collaborations, and many more! Hear more: yesterdaysconcert.com

Hey There EKPO Fans! We're continuing our focus on Women First with an encore presentation of this chat with Ani DiFranco. Enjoy!-------------------On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and folk singer Ani DiFranco, who's gained critical recognition in the neo-Americana folk world for unaffectedly blending her eclectic sound with socially and politically charged lyrics. She is also widely accredited for mothering the DIY movement in music. DiFranco started her own record label, Righteous Babe, when she was 19 and has since released 22 studio albums. In 2019 she put out a memoir, titled No Walls and the Recurring Dream, in which she details her life as a musician and activist. Last month Ani released a double single, “Do or Die” and “Contagious,” along with a music video for the former. The video promotes voting by dropping the viewer into an illustrious, quintessential display of the streets of New Orleans, to culminate with a social justice street-dance-party, ending in a silent tribute to justice by the Magnolia Bridge. The slick, Wurlitzer-decorated groove in combination with her versatile vocal dynamics provide a nifty instrumental section to compliment her message of unity and justice. Ani and Kraz talk through her recent projects, the journey to the digital age of music, and about her musical style choices and breakthroughs. Ani goes in depth on the influences that brought her to her current standing, and how she did it herself to become a matriarch for the DIY movement in music. Hey There Plus One Fans!Over the next few months, we're going to revisit some classic episodes of the show. This week, we continue our focus on Women First with Victoria Canal. Enjoy!---------------------------------------------In this episode of Plus One Eric talks to his good friend and one of his favorite young artists, singer-songwriter Victoria Canal. Having grown up across three continents and moving every year, from an early age Victoria used songwriting to channel her fears of not fitting in. It's Canal's complete comfort in her own skin that lets her trust audiences and be truly vulnerable with them, frequently bringing fans to tears. Her newest EP, Victoria, released on August 28th, represents a giant step forward for Canal as a writer and producer, and the resulting tracks convey a maturity far beyond her 22 years. Hear Victoria tell Eric why a seaside cliff near Barcelona was the only place to record such a profoundly personal album, and why it feels right to release it during such a difficult year. Episode 025 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes the legendary Eric Krasno to the show for a pretty sweet powwow on a number of salient topics from the guitarist/producer's illustrious career. Co-founder of Soulive, co-founder and former guitarist of Lettuce, Kraz was in the Bay Area in late September for a quick run with E3- (Eric Krasno Trio), at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, a club owned by Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. In between soundcheck and the gig, Kraz and I sat down and chopped it up for nearly an hour, and trust it was a thrill to have this conversation after so many years of being a superfan of so many of his projects. Krasno Introduction & KRAZ "Leave a Little" at 7:30 Eric Krasno Interview at 15:00 We start chatting about the present tense, beginning with his formation of E3, a little about his bandmates and loosely defining what the mission is. From there we pivot to his brand new KRAZ project, and the album Telescope, released on Sept.27. Eric lets us in on why KRAZ is such a departure from his established norm, and what went into the creation of this new lane for the longtime Soulive shredder. Krasno also details his departure from Brooklyn after 20 years, and how that figured into the conception and realization of the concept album Telescope. We also touch on his stoke for his new digs and studio in Los Angeles, and some super funky neighbors. Since we were at Bob Weir's club, it only felt perfect to get into the Grateful Dead. With reverence, Kraz takes us back to his first GD shows in the late 80's, all the way up through sharing the stage with Phil Lesh, Bobby and the Rhythm Devils. Kraz also tells a few stories about father and son, his own pops, & later Phil and Grahame Lesh for a couple nights out on the NOLA town over Jazz Fest. Naturally, we had to dive into two decades of Soulive, and why they were such a revolutionary band at the turn of the century. Kraz walks us down memory lane a little, but chooses to focus on how fiery the most recent Soulive performances have been. After taking the temperature of Soulive, Kraz opens up a bit about Lettuce. The guitarist reflects on the early days, their meteoric ascent, his decision to walk away (and why), and brings it full circle back at LOCK'N when LETT paid tribute to JGB with Bobby, John Mayer, Oteil and others back in August 2018. Eric then takes a few moments to explain what was behind the difficult decision to step up and perform with Circles Around the Sun, in honor and memory of his dearly departed friend Neal Casal. We finish up our riveting conversation with some guitar shop talk, focusing on the PRS Silver Sky, John Mayer signature model. LEAH CONCIALDI Inteview begins at 1hr 11m Following that interview is a short, sweet conversation with Leah Concialdi, a saxophonist (and more) with ATOMGA and Tnertle, as well as a major cog in the wheel that is Color Red Music out in Colorado. Over the summer, we got a chance to hear all about the label, the concept and the people behind Color Red, as well as a little bit about both of her bands and her experience in the music industry for the past decade. *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* - "Telephone" by Erykah Badu.
