What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

We've all been there: our kid asks us what heaven is like, and whether dogs can go there too. Or why some people are homeless. Or why that person over there doesn't look like other people. Sometimes we rush to smooth things over, or chastise them for what is probably honest curiosity. Other times we overexplain, answering with a confusing lecture when what they really wanted was reassurance. In this episode, we talk about how to find the best balance. Raising good humans is hard. We all worry about if we're doing best and we don't always know how to do it. This is especially true when we start touching on topics we may not have experience with, like racism. Many of us may think that we can just try to raise kids who aren't racist and that will be enough. But it's not. We need to actively work to change the ingrained racism in our society and our children can lead the way if we help them get there. This is where help is needed and I was thrilled to be able to speak to educator and author Britt Hawthorne about her new book, "Raising Anti-Racist Children". She's the help we need to change the world one child at a time. I know we all want a better world for our children, that's a big part of why you're on this respectful parenting journey with me, right? At some level, most of us believe that by raising our children with dignity, respect, and emotional intelligence, we will send out emotionally healthy, whole children who know how to stand up for themselves, what healthy relationships look like, and how to advocate for a more just world. This is truly powerful and world-changing work, and a significant part of creating this truer, more beautiful world, is helping our children learn to see inequity, get curious about bias and prejudice and engage with the process of dismantling the -isms that hold us all back. But the "how" of actually doing that work, can be so daunting. So I invite you to join me for a super practical conversation on this topic with Britt Hawthorne. She is a Black bi-racial momma, teacher, author, and anti-bias and antiracist facilitator. Britt partners with caregivers, educators, and families to raise the next generation of antiracist children. On this episode of The Momologist™, learn why “I don't see color” is not the goal, the difference between being an active ally and a co-conspirator, and tools to prepare your home to be an anti-racist environment. In an era when many questions about race have centered around whiteness, Britt Hawthorne's book Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide (Released Today - June 7, 2022) centers on people of the global majority. Community is at the heart of antiracism, she explains, and this book includes sections from fifteen diverse contributing authors offering their lived experiences. In addition to raising her two children Britt has an extensive background in education both traditional and Montessori, and while the book is contained within the antiracist framework, many of the principles and teachings contribute to raising well-rounded children in general.  Children, especially those from birth through eight years old have a natural curiosity to learn, especially from their environment. Therefore, it's important that parents serve as models for their children's behavior, while also showing that mistakes are allowed. We are all mysterious beings Britt says, and we need to honor that mystery.  Quotes • “We're thinking of it as a lifestyle, we're thinking of it as something that we're constantly practicing. So these principles are something that we're always practicing in order to uphold the values of antiracism.” (17:29-17:40 | Britt)  • “Folks can get caught up in anti-racism being about dismantling and disrupting, but it's also about building, imagining, creating and giving yourself permission to dream. (18:58-19:14 | Britt) • “We're not trying to tell our children what to think. Anti-racism is about critically thinking.” (23:56-24:00 | Britt) • “I also think about how some folks are nervous to engage in anti-racism. And a lot of times what they cite to me is, ‘I'm worried I might say the wrong thing. I might do the wrong thing.' Some folks will say, ‘But what if they accuse me of being performative?' Those are all things that are rooted in perfectionism.” (31:34-31:55 | Britt) • “If we are modeling and holding ourselves to this perfection, it doesn't allow us to take risks. It certainly don't allow us to fail really beautifully. It doesn't allow us to learn.” (32:24-32:36 | Britt) • “So the goal isn't ever to become ‘unbiased,' as I'll sometimes hear folks talk about. The goal is to really understand the ways in which your brain has made fast decisions or short-cuts that not only hold you back from your fullest potential but also hold them back from their fullest potential.” (38:14-38:33 | Britt) • “Curiosity is at the heart of everything that I do.”(51:58-52:02 | Britt)  • “It's always the right time, and it's always the right thing to speak the truth.”(55:08-55:12 | Britt)    Raising Antiracist Children Book by Britt Hawthorne: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Raising-Antiracist-Children/Britt-Hawthorne/9781982185428   Website: www.Britthawthorne.com   Britt's Curated Booklists: https://bookshop.org/shop/britthawthorne   IG: @britthawthorne    Subscribe to our Mailing List: http://www.TheOfficialMomologist.com   Connect with The Momologist™: https://www.instagram.com/theofficialmomologist/ https://www.facebook.com/TheOfficialMomologist   ------   The Momologist™ is a production of The Reel Media Group.  For inquiries, please email: contact@thereelmediagroup.com

Britt Hawthorne, a mom of 2 boys and author Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide, says that raising antiracist kids requires teaching them to identify unfairness. It includes incorporating an anti-bias lens when doing, well, almost anything. Britt's oldest son was about 12 years old when his homework required him to imagine he was a colonist in Jamestown or Plymouth and write a letter to relatives back home in England. The boy completed the work as assigned, but his mom took it a bit farther. "Who do you think this assignment is centering?" she asked. "Who had cousins in England in 1620?" Forced labor and human trafficking was ongoing and common at the time; the lesson contained no mention of either of those things. "I wonder," she said to her, "what information is left out of this story?" We can all help our kids learn to identify unfairness and erasure. And we can show them how to take action and drive change. You can start by challenging and changing your language. Consider using "people of the global majority" instead of "BIPOC" or "people of color;" after all, at least 80% of the humans on this planet are not white. In this episode, Janet, & Britt discuss: Diversity, justice, & systemic inequities Responding to racist behavior in the classroom (and elsewhere) Educational racism Choosing homeschooling when available education options aren't serving your kids Challenging and expanding lessons, assignments, and narratives that only focus one group Embracing differences Answering kids' tough questions Differentiating between "uncomfortable" and "unsafe" -- & learning to lean into uncomfortable Language shifts that can help decenter white-ness (Example: "people of the global majority" instead of "BIPOC" or "people of color') Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide -- Britt's book britthawthorne.com -- Britt's website (includes links to her blog, antiracism workshops, & lots of free info) Addressing Racism & Racial Disparities with Hilary Beard -- ON BOYS episode Need help with your boys? Britt Hawthorne is an anti-racist educator, teacher, speaker, visionary, and activist committed to raising a generation of anti-racist children by centering families of the global majority and fostering equitable learning environments for students and children of all ages and backgrounds. Britt's work moves the idea of equity in education from a goal to reality. In this dynamic conversation, Britt shares the backstory to her online community and Collective Liberation.  She also tells us about her experience being pushed out of teaching, when her two Black sons experienced educational racism.  We talk about “power over, power with, and power within,” as well as the prison technologies upheld in many schools. We also hear about Britt's new book, "Raising Anti-Racist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide" which will be out in 2022. -----Britt Hawthorne on Instagram: @britthawthorne Britt's Website: britthawthorne.comJoin Collective Liberation: collective-liberation.mn.co  Shout Out: @ameliaasherwood + @sankofalearningcenter Row House Publishing on Instagram: @rowhousepubPodcast Transcriptions Available: www.rowhousepublishing.com/podcast Learn more about Row House Publishing and our mission to Raise the Volume on Voices That Matter™: http://rowhousepublishing.com Original Book Stoop theme: anonymousCover art: Danielle Pioli (https://www.daniellepioli.com)

Your kiddo just said something racist.  Trust me, as a parent myself, I can feel your pain, hear your groans of embarrassment and sense your anxiety.  But what do you do now? If you are here listening to this podcast and participating in this community, I know you are working toward creating an anti-racist and inclusive world for your kids. But guess what? Despite our very best efforts, sometimes kids — and, let's be honest, even we as adults — make prejudiced comments.  Yes, these comments need to be addressed. We can't just sweep them under the rug and pretend they didn't happen, or else growth and change in our communities will never happen. Although making mistakes ourselves or hearing our little ones make mistakes may feel like the end of the world, it doesn't have to be if we use these moments as teaching opportunities. The First Name Basis Podcast is here to help. In this episode, you will learn: Why it is important to teach our children about who they are and where they come from and that differences are normal. The 5 B's of how to respond to kids when they say something racist (Be proactive, be calm, be curious, be clear, be reflective). How to apply the 5 B's using a specific example. How to keep the conversations going so you can continue to learn together as a family.   Race Talk Roadmap   Our Race Talk Roadmap is the tool you need to begin conversations about race and racism with your children! We have a list of three tips for parents of older children and a list of three tips for parents of younger children. Visit firstnamebasis.org/racetalk to get the Race Talk Roadmap sent straight to your inbox.   Ally Elementary  Parents have been asking for a practical, interactive way to implement the anti-racist strategies that I lay out in the First Name Basis Podcast. So this October we are launching “Ally Elementary: Anti-Racist Education For Families."  During this five-week program parents will work together with their children to create a culture of anti-racism in their home, and I will be there to guide them every step of the way. We will use hands-on activities to teach our children about everything from the untold story of how race was created to how they can disrupt racism in their everyday lives. I am so excited to watch the families in our community make a meaningful transformation and improve their communities through anti-racist action. Microaggression may have “micro” in its name, but that doesn't mean these assaults are small. Two women I admire so much for their anti-racism work explain it like this: “There's nothing micro about micro aggressions” — Britt Hawthorne, anti-racist educator  “Microaggression, macro effect.” — Alex Scott, creator of Ditto Kids Magazine  According to a paper by researchers at the Teachers College at Columbia University and published in American Psychologist, “Racial microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color. Perpetrators of microaggressions are often unaware that they engage in such communications when they interact with racial/ethnic minorities.”   See? “There's nothing micro about microaggressions” because “microaggression, macro effect.”    In this episode of the First Name Basis podcast you will learn: The three different types of microaggressions — microassault, microinsult, microinvalidation. Specific examples of what these racial assaults look like. What affect microaggressions have. What you can do — whether you are a white person or a BIPOC — to respond to microaggressions.    Season 4 Song Credit: “Sleeper” by Steve Adams” and “Dive Down” by VYEN    Patreon Learning Community  Join the First Name Basis Patreon Community Make sure to join our Patreon Community to take part in our monthly Q&A sessions and download the detailed notes from this episode!   Connect With Us  First Name Basis Website Join us on Instagram    FNB Bite-sized Black History Program Bite-sized Black History is a program that empowers you to teach the little ones you love about 12 brilliant Black Americans that have been largely overlooked by our history books. Welcome to the last episode of Season 2. And it's a good one. Today I get to chat to Montessori educator and a nationally recognised anti-bias educator in the US, Britt Hawthorne. She's all about creating inclusive and equitable environments for all learners and understandably her work has been recognized by none other than PBS, Drew Barrymore, Google Edu, Association Montessori Internationale, and more.I have learned so much from Britt over the last year and a half, yes, about being an anti-racist parent and educator but also just how you can raise critically thinking children, children who can advocate for themselves, recognise injustice, call it out and do something about it. We all need people like this that raise their children in a way that shows us what is possible.Links from the showBritt Hawthorne - website / instagramJoin Britt's Collective Liberation communityDr Kira BanksMore about the fundamental needs in MontessoriAnti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves by Louise Derman-Sparks, Julie Olsen EdwardsDr Rudine Sims Bishop on mirrors, windows and sliding doorsBritt's favourite books - bookshop.org/shop/britthawthornelook out for Britt's book coming in 2022, "Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide"redistributes funds to Keres Children's Learning Center and Sankofa Learning Centersome of my favourite instagram posts from Britt:pyramid of accountability“If you're tired, rest don't quit” by darling and illustrated bby minna_so 8 ABAR goals to set for 202142 ways in Montessori we allow intrinsic motivation to express itself - insta post / blog postmore about the spindle boxtour of Kristina's spacefollow one of Simone's Montessori workshops here (from US$10)sign up for Simone's regular e-newsletter filled with Montessori inspirationListener questionMaeg asks“I'm really having a hard time preparing work cycles for two daughters with totally #1 different interests. With the return back to school, I thought it'd be important for teachers, parents, guardians, and others who have children in their care to get tips on how to raise them in an anti-oppressive and anti-bias way. I reached out to Tiffany M. Jewell, an anti-racist and anti-bias educator, for her guidance on this topic.Tiffany is a Black biracial writer, twin sister, first generation American, cisgender mama, anti-bias antiracist (ABAR) educator, and consultant. She is the author of the #1 New York Times and #1 Indie Best Seller, This Book Is Anti-Racist, a book for young folks [and everyone] to support waking up, taking action, and doing the work of becoming antiracist. She has been working with children and families for over eighteen years and worked as a Montessori educator for fifteen years. She enjoys exploring social justice with young folks, especially the history of racism and resistance, economic justice, and socially and personally constructed identities. Tiffany enjoys working with educators and supporting them building strong, authentic communities in which every child can be seen and valued. She is the co-founder, alongside Britt Hawthorne, of ABARatHome/ABARAtSchool, an organization that strives to support educators and caregivers in their anti-bias anti-racist journeys. She also served as the president of the founding board of the national organization, Montessori for Social Justice- seeing it through to completing nonprofit status and creating a strong mission to support and amplify Montessorian of the Global Majority across the country.Tiffany lives on the homeland of the Pocumtuc and the Nipmuck with her two young storytellers, husband, and a turtle she's had since she was nine years old. Here's what you'll learn:How Tiffany navigates having light-skin privilege and identifying with a marginalized groupHow Tiffany's white mom prepared her for the anti-racism and anti-bias work she does todayWhat other influences guided Tiffany into creating anti-bias curriculum for teachers, parents, and caregiversWhy white children are never too young to learn about racism, sexism, and other oppressive behaviourThe ways in which adultification makes classrooms unsafe for Black childrenHow the Montessori pedagogy helps children co-create an anti-racist, anti-bias curriculum, and what parents3 tips on how parents, teachers, and caregivers can get started in teaching/raising anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and anti-biased childrenClick here for the show notes and lightly edited episode transcript Get Exclusive Guided Prompts on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
