In this episode, I try to highlight the best path for parents, teachers and students to thrive in today's educational system. My advice might not be perfect, but it comes from 20 years teaching experience. Ask any questions I don't answer and I promise to do a part two to address what I can.

Annabelle Babineau is a drag queen and teacher. Amie Palmer is the mother of a trans son.
Jeremy from Illinois emailed me with the following question: "I have a six-year-old client who is getting angry and aggressive at school. History of witnessing domestic violence. I have had five sessions with him, and I would say we hit the resistance phase right on schedule. My question is the best way to handle his school counselors calling me and asking for “insight“ in addition to the mom's anxiety (emailing me daily reports of all his so-called misbehavior at school). What can I truthfully say to parents and school staff about how the things the child learns in the play therapy room are likely to transfer to his home life and school life? Put another way, even if he loves the play therapy room experience, isn't he still going to be triggered by whatever is upsetting him in school?" At some point in your career as a play therapist, you will have to work with parents, teachers, and school counselors. It's inevitable. Knowing how best to communicate with those parties is a valuable skill so that you can collaborate effectively, and at the same time, protect your time. How is creativity connected to engagement in an educational environment? In this throwback episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education podcast, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood revisit their conversation with Dr. Heather Lyon, author of Engagement is not a Unicorn (It's a Narwhal) and The BIG Book of Engagement Strategies. Listen in to learn Heather's unique formula for engagement, the differences between student engagement and adult engagement, and engagement impacts our ability to be successful learners. She details her 4 Levels of Engagement and what causes someone to shift from one level to another, as well as the manifestations of each of these engagement levels. “Compliance is not engagement”- Heather Lyon Heather's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Teachers are models for students. Students do what they see, so teachers who are engaged and creative have students that are also engaged and creative. Be willing to celebrate both the progress and the struggle. Compliance is not engagement. Stop being okay with students who are simply doing what they're told. Creativity is the fuel for engagement. The more a person has choice, voice, input, and control over what they are doing, the more likely they are to be at least interested, if not absorbed, in the learning. “Education,” wrote G. K. Chesterton, “is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.” If Chesterton is right, then education is about transmitting a culture, for what is culture if not the embodiment of a society's soul? And what “soul” can be passed on from one human to another if it is not first embodied? To discuss the importance of culture both to society generally and education specifically, we welcome to HeightsCast George Weigel, a distinguished senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and a New York Times bestselling author. In the episode, Mr. Weigel speaks about Pope St. John Paul II's “culture first” approach. Contrasting the late pope's view with Marx's view of economics as the primary driver of history and the Jacobin view of politics in the driver seat, Weigel explains the historical and philosophical roots of John Paul II's view of culture as the driving force in history. Along the way, he discusses what culture is and what education has to do with it. Cybersecurity is not just a technology issue. It is part of everyone's job. What do students, parents, teachers, and staff need to know to protect themselves and their schools from cyber-attacks? What are the best practices for teachers with their students? How does the school work with parents and staff on an ongoing basis? The assumption is that the responsibility for all cybersecurity decisions and outcomes rests solely with the technology team. Some assume that managing cybersecurity risk is too technical for students, parents, teachers and staff involvement. Nothing could be further from the truth! In our professional advancement webinars, education technology experts from across the country and around the world present their specialties. Sadly, the interest to become a teacher or remain a teacher is the worst in our nation's history. We'll tackle the teacher shortage, low standards, student whining, and new requirements in states like AZ & FL that passed what critics call the “warm body” law to put unqualified people in classrooms as teachers. Other states are pushing universities to expedite teacher certifications. Some districts are hiring student teachers who are still enrolled in college to be full-time first-year teachers. Dr. Ingrid Haynes-Traylor served two decades in P-12 public education as a teacher and administrator and now serves as the Director of the National Literacy Institute. She also teaches bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level literacy courses and has published books and numerous journal articles on literacy instruction. She actively researches best practices in literacy instruction for at-risk student groups and conducts literacy training and workshops across the nation to build instructional capacity in teachers who teach our most fragile learners. Show Notes This episode is all about why it is important to let our kids “fail” and struggle, instead of automatically stepping in thinking we are helping them. Kids learn so much through productive struggle. Be there to guide them, sympathize with them, and help them when needed. But it is so important to make sure not to cross over the line from helping to doing and taking over. Kids learn so many great life skills when they are taught it is okay to struggle. Not everything is easy. And when we try something new it most likely won't be easy. The fear of failure holds so many of us back as adults, so what can we do to help our kids embrace the possibility of failure and teach them skills to continue on when things get challenging? President Biden recently said "They are not someone else's children, they are like yours (teachers) when you are in the classroom.". Irregardless of what he meant, he did use it as a chance to lob a political volley and the other side responded in kind. Coach discusses the need to listen to all voices if a public school education is going to work and asks the question both parents and teachers need to ask, "What's the line?". At the end of the day, as the title implies, it is wrong for teachers to see the people with the closest relationship with their students as the enemy. Parents and teachers need to know their roles and work together for the good of kids, not score political points.

About our GuestJessica Hooten Wilson is the Louise Cowan Scholar in Residence at the University of Dallas. She is the author of numerous books, including The Scandal of Holiness: Renewing Your Imagination in the Company of Literary Saints, published in 2022 by Brazos Press. Her book, Giving the Devil his Due: Flannery O'Connor and The Brothers Karamazov, received a 2018 Christianity Today Book of the Year Award in the Culture & the Arts.Award-winning author Jessica Hooten Wilson explains that learning to hear the call of holiness requires cultivating a new imagination--one rooted in the act of reading. Learning to read with eyes attuned to the saints who populate great works of literature moves us toward holiness, where God opens up a way of living that extends far beyond what we can conjure for ourselves. Literature has the power to show us what a holy life looks like, and these depictions often scandalize even as they shape our imagination. As such, careful reading becomes a sort of countercultural spiritual discipline. To hear about Jessica's newest book, Scandal of Holiness, here is a recorded lecture at Union University. Show NotesThis lively and often deeply contemplative conversation with guest Jessica Hooten Wilson offers not only reasons for choosing Classical Education, but also simple and easy ways to support sanctity and truth in the joy of raising families. What problems, concerns and issues still remain in education while trying to teach either in-person, online or hybrid. I, personally, address these issues of education in both my home state and local school district. Why all the blame for teachers? Where is the accountability and responsibility of the parents and students? Let's discuss.Season 1 Episode 12:Parents, Teachers and COVID-19Season 2 Episode 17:Finale--Parents, Teachers and COVID-19Support: Free Lunch CoffeeIf you love drinking coffee and want to help end child hunger. With the return back to school, I thought it'd be important for teachers, parents, guardians, and others who have children in their care to get tips on how to raise them in an anti-oppressive and anti-bias way. I reached out to Tiffany M. Jewell, an anti-racist and anti-bias educator, for her guidance on this topic.Tiffany is a Black biracial writer, twin sister, first generation American, cisgender mama, anti-bias antiracist (ABAR) educator, and consultant. She is the author of the #1 New York Times and #1 Indie Best Seller, This Book Is Anti-Racist, a book for young folks [and everyone] to support waking up, taking action, and doing the work of becoming antiracist. She has been working with children and families for over eighteen years and worked as a Montessori educator for fifteen years. She enjoys exploring social justice with young folks, especially the history of racism and resistance, economic justice, and socially and personally constructed identities. Tiffany enjoys working with educators and supporting them building strong, authentic communities in which every child can be seen and valued. She is the co-founder, alongside Britt Hawthorne, of ABARatHome/ABARAtSchool, an organization that strives to support educators and caregivers in their anti-bias anti-racist journeys. She also served as the president of the founding board of the national organization, Montessori for Social Justice- seeing it through to completing nonprofit status and creating a strong mission to support and amplify Montessorian of the Global Majority across the country.Tiffany lives on the homeland of the Pocumtuc and the Nipmuck with her two young storytellers, husband, and a turtle she's had since she was nine years old. Here's what you'll learn:How Tiffany navigates having light-skin privilege and identifying with a marginalized groupHow Tiffany's white mom prepared her for the anti-racism and anti-bias work she does todayWhat other influences guided Tiffany into creating anti-bias curriculum for teachers, parents, and caregiversWhy white children are never too young to learn about racism, sexism, and other oppressive behaviourThe ways in which adultification makes classrooms unsafe for Black childrenHow the Montessori pedagogy helps children co-create an anti-racist, anti-bias curriculum, and what parents3 tips on how parents, teachers, and caregivers can get started in teaching/raising anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and anti-biased childrenClick here for the show notes and lightly edited episode transcript Get Exclusive Guided Prompts on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today's conversation should be a good one and i'm sure it's something on your mind so let's get to it. Thanks you guys for joining me on the podcast and thanks for inspiring what I think will be a lively conversation about distance learning. If you guys could just introduce yourselves, I'm Nana Lolachi i've worked in different capacities in schools, I've been a teacher of different grades and currently i'm working as a coordinator so really working with targeted student populations, students who are english learners and really seeing the administrative side of working in a school too for the first time. I'm a mom of two boys. My name is Mahdis Keshavarz and i am a mom of a little boy as well as a first grader, um and he is in school here in Los Angeles and I'm working from home running two companies called the Make Agency and Polite Society and trying to juggle homeschooling parenting, momming, wifing, living, notice my self-care comes last in that list as I'm sure you women can relate to. Absolutely so you know actually Mahdis you put up a Facebook post that caught my attention, so can you just share a little bit about what the what you said in that post and you know we can go from there. Well I shared a post, uh talking a little bit about what's being asked of teachers, um and it was it kind of in response to so much of what I see online and other conversations of kind of these demands for us to get our kids back into school which, i am all for and I want that to happen but i think that sometimes In that trajectory one of the things that i've noticed is a lot of times those moments of abdication of parenting, that happen are highlighted in this pandemic and some of the things that we're easily able to slide and kind of put on teachers to deal with over the course of the day we're not able to do in the year 2020 and i think that that's made for really difficult encounters with parenting but also for me it's been really uncomfortable to see how much more is being asked of educators that seem outside of what is reasonable and so...
