Episode Summary: This episode of Conversations with Kristi delves into the sensitive topic of child-on-child sexual abuse, highlighting the experiences of individuals involved in the ABAR project. It emphasises the misconceptions surrounding children's behaviour in such situations and the importance of recognising the seriousness of these incidents rather than dismissing them as mere experimentation or curiosity. Key Takeaways: The ABAR project focuses on child-on-child sexual abuse. Personal experiences can shape memories and perceptions of abuse. Misconceptions about children's behaviour can be harmful. Child-on-child sexual abuse is often underreported and misunderstood. It's crucial to recognise the seriousness of such incidents. Psychological support is vital for survivors of abuse. Awareness and education are key in addressing these issues. Children's experiences should not be trivialised or dismissed. The impact of abuse can vary based on frequency and context. Conversations about child abuse need to be more open and honest.

En: Budapest, with its full and historically vibrant content, was home to Eszter, Gergely, and Zsófia. They lived like peaceful beetles hidden in the quiet bark of an oak tree growing at the edge; this was their home, this was their routine.Hu: Eszter szépségesen nagyvonalú nő volt. Gergely, a történelem szerelmese, mindig szívesen osztotta meg szeretett városának szépségét bárkivel, aki szeretne hallani róla. Zsófia, a nyílt szívű, kedves barát minden napját vidám beszélgetéssel töltötte.En: Eszter was a magnificently generous woman. Gergely, a lover of history, always happily shared the beauty of their beloved city with anyone willing to listen. Zsófia, the open-hearted, kind friend, spent her days in cheerful conversations. Sűrűn félrenézett, összezavarodva figyelte a helyi szokásokat.En: One day, Eszter and Gergely had to meet a tourist who seemed very confused. He kept looking away, watching the local customs with a puzzled expression.Hu: Egy kávézóban találkoztak. Történt, hogy a belebonyolódott fiatalember figyelmesen figyelte Esztert és Gergelyt, amint közös kávéjukat szürcsölték. Kezeik összeérték, a köszönet jeleként Gergely enyhe handabintást adott Eszternek, majd kedvesen visszahúzódott. A zavarodott turista összerezzenését, amint arca végre megvilágosodott, valamint a megértés gyengéd csillogását észrevéve Zsófia odasietett hozzájuk.En: They met at a café. The confused young man found himself watching Eszter and Gergely closely as they sipped their shared coffee. Their hands touched briefly, with Gergely gesturing gracefully towards Eszter as a sign of gratitude before gently withdrawing. Seeing the tourist's sudden realization in his brightening face and the gentle spark of understanding, Zsófia hurried over to them.Hu: "Ne aggódj, úgy látszik, furcsa a szokásunk. Hadd magyarázzam el" - kezdte Zsófia. Abaráti és megértő hangján csillogott a türelem. A turistának a segítség meleg lehelete olyan volt, mint a hűsítő szél forró nyári napon.En: "Don't worry, our customs might seem strange. Let me explain," she began. Her voice, filled with friendship and patience, shone with warmth. The tourist felt the comforting breeze of assistance, like a cool wind on a hot summer day. En: Zsófia explained that Gergely's gesture was a "csókolom" - a form of greeting in the shape of a hand kiss, expressing love and respect. In the intricate social rules, this form of greeting was the ultimate display of kindness and esteem.Hu: A turista rémült arcán hirtelen megjelent a megértés villanása. En: The tourist's terrified expression suddenly transformed into a flash of understanding. A smile emerged, and he thanked them for their selflessness before, with a new word in his dictionary, he moved on.Hu: A nap a láthatáron megpihent, mint egy rózsaszínű, kék alapon pihenő alvó katica. Eszter, Gergely és Zsófia a kávézóban maradtak, míg e szokásos nap lassan leáldozott.En: The sun rested on the horizon like a sleeping ladybug on a pink and blue background. Eszter, Gergely, and Zsófia stayed in the café, while this routine day slowly came to an end. Listen in as Dr. Marlee Bunch and Brittany Collins join PEBC's Phenomenal Teaching Podcast with Michelle Morris Jones to discuss planning for ABAR and SEL pedagogy. Both Marlee and Brittany value the importance of telling and understanding one's own story as well as the stories of others. Oftentimes the stories of history and our own students' stories are “hushed” and not included in classroom curriculum, conversations, and experiences for a variety of reasons. Marlee and Brittany encourage educators to “unlearn the hush” and to more broadly incorporate stories of oppression and loss into the classroom so that all perspectives and lived experiences can be valued. This episode highlights Dr. Marlee Bunch's “H.U.S.H. Framework” which can be applied to any lesson plan or teaching content at the K-12 or post-secondary level. One can think of this framework as a guide and accountability piece to create inclusive learning content that supports all students. This framework considers both student and educator and requires mindful and consistent engagement from the educator. Listeners will find that the H.U.S.H. Framework supports the strands of Community and Planning of the PEBC Teaching Framework. The four key concepts of the H.U.S.H. Framework include: The importance of marginalized histories The importance of unlearning and reflection The importance of stories The importance of healing through connection and relationships Brittany Collins brings her expertise in SEL and grief-responsive teaching to the conversation by explaining the ways in which the framework can support students' social and emotional development and directly support the healing journeys of students who have experienced significant loss or trauma. Brittany also helps us think about how we mustn't lose sight of the importance of authentic connection and relationships through integrated social emotional learning experiences. Marlee is an educator with over 16 years teaching experience. She holds two graduate degrees, and recently completed her doctoral degree from the University of Illinois. Her study illustrates the impact the long history of segregation, Brown v. Board of Education, and desegregation efforts had on the teaching experiences of Black, female educators particularly between the years 1954-1971. Brittany's work explores the impacts of grief, loss, and trauma in the school system, as well as how innovative pedagogies-- from inquiry-based learning to identity development curricula-- can create conditions supportive of all learners. Brittany is the author of Learning from Loss: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Supporting Grieving Students, which was published in 2021 and is now available as an audio book. The “Phenomenal Teaching Podcast” is brought to you by Public Education & Business Coalition (PEBC) and is intended to elevate the strands of the PEBC Teaching Framework illustrated in Wendy Ward Hoffer's book, Phenomenal Teaching. Those strands include community, planning, workshop, thinking strategies, discourse, and assessment. Thank you for joining us this season as we strive to share the stories of educators who are creating scaffolds for each and every student to ensure that classrooms and schools are places where agency, equity, and understanding can flourish.

My friend Kory O'Rourke is an amazing human and an especially bright light in my life. Kory and I crossed paths in the parent support group for the residential mental health program that our children attended. She has been an invaluable source of support and encouragement to me and I am delighted to gift you with her beautiful spirit today! In today's episode you get to be a fly on the wall as we take about pretty much everything--except what we initially set out to talk about! By profession, Kory is an educator. She has been an adjunct Faculty member in the Undergraduate Teacher Education Center at the University of San Francisco since 2016. She likes to say that she is "a teacher who teaches teaching to people who want to become teachers"! In addition, Kory spent fifteen years as a public high school teacher and school leader, with a career-long focus on social-emotional learning, social justice, mindfulness for teachers and students, and student agency. She is also a Mindful Schools Certified Mindfulness Instructor (CMI), from the class of 2016. She previously served as the Head of Program for Mindful Schools where she created programming to help teachers develop a secular mindfulness practice and learn how to share that practice with their students. On a personal note, she is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and has worked in various roles in schools to support LGBTQ+ students and staff; she has initiated and advised Gay-Straight Alliance groups, been the LGBTQ+ liaison for her school at the district level, and been a founding member of her schools' Trans/Non-Binary Task Force teams. Ten years ago, Kory began the vital work of becoming an anti-racist educator in earnest, and she continues to actively pursue learning, self-examination, and discomfort as she practices daily the tenants of anti-racist work; she shares this work with her colleagues through creating and leading ABAR professional development and through joining together with them in communities of practice. Kory's personal journey includes healing from significant childhood trauma. She is dedicated to supporting the increasing awareness of trauma-informed and healing-based practices in education. In her free time, you can find her reading, playing with words and with clay, embroidering, walking her two misbehaved dogs for long zigzaging walks on the beach, and pouring all of her love into her two children. Marlee Bunch and Brittany Collins join the Phenomenal Teaching Podcast to discuss the intersection of Grief-Responsive Teaching and Anti-Bias/Anti-Racist (ABAR) Teaching with Michelle Morris Jones. Developing our collective understanding of how to support students who have experienced trauma and loss increases our ability to develop classroom and school communities that support agency, equity and understanding as described in the PEBC Teaching Framework. Listen in as Marlee and Brittany share startling statistics, incredible resources, and practical strategies to support students in their healing journeys. Grief-Responsive Teaching and ABAR Teaching are distinctly different, yet have strong mutually supportive similarities. Marlee and Brittany share how paying attention to environment, connection and curriculum provide students with a safe place to land and thrive. When supporting students who are experiencing grief or healing from trauma, Brittany encourages educators to: Cultivate environments that are consistent and safe; Create opportunities for students to connect with one another in authentic ways; and Develop a curriculum that is steeped in choice so that students can process loss through shared literary experiences, writing, and personal narratives. When developing ABAR school communities, Marlee encourages educators to: Attract and retain BIPOC teachers so that the school environment honors all cultures and races; Make connections with colleagues who don't look like you to learn about other's experiences; and Develop a curriculum that is steeped in creativity, art, poetry, and allows for text pairing to explore a variety of perspectives. Access the mentioned resources here. Marlee is an educator with over 15 years of teaching experience. She holds two graduate degrees, and is currently working on her doctoral degree from the University of Illinois. Her study illustrates the impact the long history of segregation, Brown v. Board of Education, and desegregation efforts had on the teaching experiences of Black female educators. Check out Marlee's zine, "Unlearning the Hush: The Empowering Narratives of Black Educators and Mentors." Brittany's work explores the impacts of grief, loss, and trauma in the school system, as well as how innovative pedagogies-- from inquiry-based learning to identity development curricula-- can create conditions supportive of all learners. Brittany is the author of Learning from Loss: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Supporting Grieving Students, which was published in 2021.
