How do we detach from what we do? For over achievers especially, this can feel impossible. It especially hits home when you are in between jobs or not doing what you want to be doing. As an actress, I GET THIS. I understand what it is to question whether I can even call myself an actress if I'm not currently acting in anything. I'm so happy to have Kara Barnett back on the podcast. She fills us in on what's been going on since our last interview. Starting out as a casting associate producer on America's Next Top Model, she worked consistently with companies and Networks such as Viacom, Discovery, CBS, BET, A&E, and OWN. We last saw her as Creative Manager of Strong Black Lead at Netflix. Kara Barnett currently is a Senior Creative with the Apple TV+ Product and Design team. She also loves creating through her film production company of many years, 25EightProductions and has recently added a new agency arm to the company that focuses on short form content development and creation with Black and Brown brands and creators as well as experiential creative direction. In this episode: - We talk about where she was after leaving Netflix - Leaning on her supportive network - Attending a retreat called "Waking Hours" and shifting her perspective on how much time we have - The importance of positive self talk - Advice for talking to those affected by layoffs, more in this LinkedIn post While Kara is now a Senior Creative at Apple TV+, she now understands that she is so more than the place she attaches herself to or her job title, she invests in the brand that is Kara Inc. and all of the places she works gives more to her as a whole. Myles Worthington is the Founder and CEO of WORTHI, an ethnographic marketing, communications and content company. Ethnography is the study of human cultures, and that's what WORTHI does – steeps themselves in the behaviors of various people around the world, and creates the cultural relevance between their unique needs, and a brand's unique story, to create a lasting bond. As the company CEO and principal strategist, Myles partners with major brands like Paramount+, Lionsgate, Peloton and P&G (to name a few) to build and execute upon strategies that keep these brands relevant and resonant for traditionally underserved communities of people, including Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+, Asian and Pacific Islander, People with Disabilities, and every intersectionality in between. Prior to building his own foundation with WORTHI, Myles held various roles at multiple communications agencies before coming to Netflix and starting the Multicultural PR practice in 2016. He later moved to the marketing org to start (and eventually lead) the multicultural Brand & Editorial team. His efforts are responsible for pioneering initiatives like Strong Black Lead, Con Todo, Most and Netflix Golden which were sub-brands and digital communities that focused on creating content and conversation for Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+ and AAPI audiences respectively. He built those teams and the internal corporate energy towards audience related work from scratch, and proudly led that organization until he left the company in April 2022. Myles' professional purpose is simple: to change the industry for the better, and to destroy the common misconception that niche tactics will yield niche results. Specificity should be seen as a secret weapon. Myles is also a husband, father of three, lover of the outdoors, avid swimmer, and big time car buff.

What thread does Watchmen, the Oscars, Comcast, and Byron Allen all have in common? On screen BLACKNESS and off screen bigotry. In this episode, Carl takes a look at how the notions of Blackness, our history, and our futures are being depicted and disputed by what’s on screen, and on the docket at the U.S. Supreme Court.
In New Orleans at ESSENCE Festival, the YGP hosts had a chance to get to know some of the 2020 presidential Candidates better. Senator (and TRUE Jersey boy) Cory Booker (@CoryBooker) came through for an intimate conversation where he shared his commitment to Black women and our community. Cori and Charli had the pleasure of chatting with Sen. Booker about developing communities, his Vegan lifestyle, his love for his home state and the Black women who’ve inspired his career. And with Election Day 2020 quickly approaching (473 days to be exact!) the senator also offers encouragement for those of us who are feeling a little jaded about the political process. Heather Dewey-Hagborg is one of the most creative people and orthogonal thinkers I have ever had the pleasure to know. I first met and learned of Heather’s work at the Contemporary Museum of Art in Chicago where she presented as a co-founder and co-curator of REFRESH, an inclusive and politically engaged collaborative platform at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Heather has a BA from Bennington College, a Master of Professional Studies in Interactive Telecommunications from New York University, and a PhD in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Heather’s work has been shown internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum, the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale, and PS1 MOMA, and her work is held in public collections of the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the New York Historical Society. Heather and her work have been widely discussed in the media, from the New York Times and the BBC to Art Forum, TED and Wired. She has won a number of grants, residencies, and awards for her work. She is a former Assistant Professor of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Bio-Design at Parsons, the New School, an artist fellow at A.I. Now, and an affiliate of Data & Society. She is also a co-founder and co-curator of REFRESH, an inclusive and politically engaged collaborative platform at the intersection of Art, Science, and Technology. Heather got into DNA Phenotyping that resulted her controversial project Stranger Visions, which allowed her to bring awareness to forensic DNA phenotyping and her concern that it could be the next version of racial profiling, which she addressed in “Sci-Fi Crime Drama with a Strong Black Lead” vis-à-vis the use and misuse of DNA data. Heather also worked with whistle blower, Chelsea Manning which resulted in the work, Probably Chelsea, which is an amazing odyssey and outcome. This was followed by a solo-exhibition Genomic Intimacy and her most recent project T3511. Our conversation in this episode is wide ranging, as is her work. There are too few people in the world today like Heather, which is a shame, and is why I am so happy to have had such a wonderful time talking with her and being able to share it with you. It is one thing to read about Heather and her work herein, it’s another to hear her story and thought process via our podcast conversation, but I strongly encourage you to visit her work in person or online via the links below. You won’t be disappointed.
One thing we learned from Simone Missick (@SimoneMissick): She knows how to pray. Back for Luke Cage’s second season kicking more ass (with one arm), Simone’s tapped into a higher power that’s blessed her with an in-demand career on stage and screen and loving husband (hey, Dorian Missick). Literally minutes before Simone took the stage at Netflix’s Strong Black Lead panel at the American Black Film Festival (@abff), she chatted with Yes, Girl! about her work-life-love-faith balance — yes, she’s tired but she’s thankful — and why Detroit girls never leave the house without slaying.Yes, Girl! hosts: Cori Murray @corimurray; Charli Penn @ManWifeDog; and Yolanda Sangweni @yolizamaProducer: Steven Psyllos @stevenpsyllosAudio engineer: Chiquita Pascal @ChiquitaPaschalMusic: Gold Standard Creative @gscdotnyc
