Malí ľudia, veľké emócie je kniha, ktorú musíte mať.“ - Britt Hawthorne, autorka bestselleru New York Times Author of Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide „Základný, empatický sprievodca, ktorý premení najfrustrujúcejšie rodičovské momenty na príležitosti pre spojenie a rast.“ — Dr. Shefali Tsabary, autorka bestselleru New York Times The Conscious Parent „Máloktorá kniha o výchove detí nám presne ukazuje, AKO súcitne a účinne zvládať ťažké emócie našich detí.

In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Hershberg and I talk about...   Simple, effective emotion regulation strategies that actually work for 6-year-olds when disappointment over losing takes over—and how to use them in a way that feels supportive, not controlling. When to step in and what to say—a breakdown of the best parenting approaches before, during, and after a game to help your child manage big feelings in the moment (and build skills for the future). The secret to teaching good sportsmanship outside of game time—why some of the most powerful lessons happen when no one's keeping score. How the exact same words you say to your child can be either validating and invading - and what makes the difference so you can avoid the latter.  How to keep things fun while still building resilience—because not every moment needs to be a teaching moment (and knowing when to step back is just as important). In this episode, Tara welcomes Alyssa Blask Campbell, CEO of Sew and Seed. Alyssa is a trusted expert in emotional development and the host of the popular podcast "Voices of Your Village." The conversation centers around Alyssa's new book, "Tiny Humans, Big Emotions: How to Navigate Tantrums, Meltdowns, and Defiance to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Children."Alyssa shares that the book is based on Collaborative Emotion Processing (CEP), a method for being with and moving through hard things. She and her colleague, Lauren Stauble developed this method after realizing that traditional behavior-focused approaches were not effective in real-life parenting situations. They wanted to create a comprehensive approach that focuses on the adult's self-awareness and self-care, as well as the interaction between adults and children.Tara and Alyssa discuss the importance of emotional intelligence and its impact on daily life. Alyssa shares how her perspective on emotional intelligence shifted when she started envisioning a world where these tools were accessible to everyone, including her own child and future generations. She emphasizes the need for emotional intelligence in adults, especially those in positions of power, so they can support others and model healthy ways of navigating difficult situations.Alyssa explains that emotional intelligence consists of five components: self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, social skills, and motivation. She highlights the significance of self-awareness, as it is the foundation for regulating emotions and accessing the other components. Alyssa uses personal examples, such as a social media backlash, to illustrate the importance of recognizing dysregulation cues and taking a step back before responding. They also touch on empathy and how it is best taught through modeling. Instead of claiming to understand exactly how someone feels in a given situation, she suggests connecting with the emotions someone is experiencing, rather than focusing on why they are feeling that way. If you're interested in teaching your children empathy, you should listen to this episode!Support the show Follow & DM me @modernmomprobs Pick up my book Check out modernmomprobs Shout out to Citizens of Sound Leave a review

My guest, emotional development expert and author Alyssa Blask Campbell, explains that regulation involves the ability to cycle through different states in our nervous system with ease, how our nervous system reacts to different stimuli, and how we can use tools like deep breathing to regulate it. Alyssa also introduces the concept of sensory systems and how being aware of what drains or recharges our nervous system can be a powerful tool for self-regulation. As you know, we've entered a new way of helping our children through big emotions—moving far away from the ways our parents used to parent us and their parents used to parent our parents. Ever felt like your kids are always out of sorts, having a meltdown, or just not listening?  This week we're talking about how to raise emotionally intelligent children, and especially how to teach them about nervous system regulation. My guest, Alyssa Blask Campbell, shares why it's essential that we as parents become aware of how our nervous systems work so we can help our kids manage stress and anxiety, depression and low energy, and everything in between.  This skill set has a powerful impact on how the energy in our homes feels, how kids handle stressors at school or in social situations, and how kids will likely perform as adults. Learn how to improve your emotional intelligence so you're better equipped to help your kids do the same so you can experience greater connection and peace in your relationships with your kids.  If you're ready to slow down, find balance, and love more, join me in the Vibrant Happy Women Club. How avoiding overwhelm, exhaustion, burnout, and meltdowns as parents pay huge dividends in the parent-child relationship.  The various buckets every child (and adult) needs to fill to keep our nervous systems in emotional safety.  How parents can balance their need for downtime (or stimulation) with their kids' needs for stimulation (or downtime).  Why parents would benefit from carpooling. How hormones and neurotransmitters are involved in nervous system regulation and dysregulation. The difference between dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin activities. And much more!

Alyssa stresses that many children feel dysregulated during the back-to-school transition and may experience a spike in separation anxiety. Because of this, she has a few tips for how parents can deal with their tiny human's big emotions:Preview and prepare: Request pictures of your child's school and teacher to help your child prepare, or do a walk-through of the school at a time when your child is feeling regulated.Create coping strategies: Put a family picture or favorite stuffed animal in your child's backpack. This will help your child self-soothe while at school. Create routines: Develop a healthy drop-off and pick-up routine that regulates your child's nervous system and commit to no nightly activities for at least two weeks after school begins. These are just a few ways Alyssa suggests regulating your child's big, back-to-school emotions.Alyssa Blask Campbell is the founder and CEO of Seed & Sew, an organization committed to giving parents, teachers and caregivers the tools to raise emotionally intelligent humans. Education is hard work, y'all. And creating environments where kids can excel takes a whole village. As a child, I listened to Dave Clark Five while doing homework. It worked for me, but another child might find that repulsive. "A band named after the drummer?!" they'd scoff. So, we need to start being more emotionally intelligent with the youths. Alyssa Blask Campbell created Seed & Sew to give educators and parents an assist with emotional intelligence. She offers tools for regulation and connection so children can thrive and build resilience. Perhaps the most important part, Alyssa is doing all this in an APPROACHABLE way. She's not trying to scare you off with big words — though she does enjoy a good fancy vocab term — she's simply making it easier to connect in a time when that's often a tough ask. We're chatting about Collaborative Emotion Processing, how to interact with kids without sounding like you're reading from a script, and why having shitty first drafts is important.

In this episode, Alyssa breaks things down to describe how emotional intelligence is based on five components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. “In terms of raising emotionally intelligent humans: We're not talking about changing who kids are, but shifting how adults experience kids' emotions.” Topics discussed in this episode include: ·   Finding a pause between reaction and response·   Learning to regulate and choose words and actions wisely·   Intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation: What is driving us?·   Why are the birth-to-age 5 years so important?·   Why our nervous system is like a battery; it drains throughout the day & needs to be recharged·   And more! FROM THE PRODUCERThanks for listening to Episode #178, How to Raise an Emotionally Intelligent Child, and for helping Dr. Meg's parenting revolution reach more than SEVEN MILLION downloads! Emotional intelligence gives us and our kids freedom to choose how we want to show up in the world. Emotional intelligence is such an important attribute to develop early in life. But most of us didn't have this kind of upbringing ourselves. So having the tools to help our kids develop this is something we practice and learn. The earlier we can help our kids with this, the easier it is for them. Alyssa Blask Campbell, Med, is an emotional development expert with a master's degree in early childhood education. She is the founder of Seed and Sew, an online modern parenting community, and the co-created the Collaborative Emotion Processing (CEP) method, a how-to guide for responding to tiny humans' big emotions to build emotional intelligence from infancy. Through Seed and Sew, Alyssa trains parents, educators, and caregivers in emotional coaching and understanding emotional intelligence. She also created and hosts Tiny Humans, Big Emotions parent support groups as virtual hangouts to dive into all things parenting. Alyssa's goal is to help families and caregivers build strategies for responding to challenging behaviors in a way that supports the development of emotional intelligence.  Throughout the episode, Alyssa discusses the connection between sensory regulation and emotional development and how as adults, our ability to connect with and guide our children is directly impacted by our level of sensory regulation. Alyssa also touches on the science behind co-regulation, provides tips to support children who struggle with anxiety and gives a few “say this” instead of “that” examples. Links: Seed and Sew website: Seed and Sew Alyssa's Podcast: Voices of your Village Seed and Sew Instagram: Seed.and.Sew The Parish School on Instagram: ParishSchoolTx The Parish School Website: The Parish School Support the show (https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/supportTPS?code=New%20Website)

Anyone else confused about when to praise a child...if ever? When to reinforce something? What about punishment? Wow...supporting children who are experiencing big emotions is not for the faint of heart that's for sure. And it seems everyone (including me) has an option on how to "weather the storm". In this PreK Teach and Play podcast episode, Alyssa Blask Campbell, Laura Fish, Dr. Shauna Tominey and I dig deep into what we mean when we use phrases like praise, rewards, and punishment. We also work really hard to share practical ideas to help teachers and parents support young children's development and to weather the storm of big emotions. During our conversation, we examine... How to avoid teaching compliance over connection Why our own emotional responses to undesired behaviors can result in both children and ourselves becoming dysregulated How traditional views on praise, rewards, and punishment need a makeover...where our aim is to help the child develop, not manage their behavior. Key take aways... And while we share many tips and suggestions...we all agree on the need to hone our own awareness of what is going on (for ourselves and our children) and for co-regulating when supporting children's emerging ability to self-regulate. This episode also includes access to a collection of annotated resources to help you think beyond Applied Behavior Analysis and the use of behavior charts.

We all have an idea of the kind of parent we want to be. Maybe it’s a mom who doesn’t yell or a mom who loves every minute of parenting. In this episode, Alyssa Blask Campbell and I explain why those ideas can be more harmful than good when it comes to helping us be a more positive parent.  Both Alyssa and I have seen things like the “no yell challenge” and all the pressure it puts on parents to essentially “be perfect” even if it is for a short time. Alyssa brings in research and I add personal experiences of why that isn’t a sustainable way to improve our parenting.  What does work? In this episode, you’ll learn about the importance of the internal work we do on ourselves as parents, and how that helps us naturally be better parents. You’ll also learn, and hopefully, internalize that we are all human. We all have emotions, and that’s ok! Even as parents it’s ok. All of our emotions are signals for us to dig deeper into why we react, and this episode will help you see how to respond more than react.  How to Create a Successful, No-Stress, Sensory Diet for Kids in 4 Simple Steps Join the FREE online workshop at www.yourkidstable.com/workshop Full show notes at https://exceptionalparentingpodcast.com/episode71

What You Will Learn The difference between coping mechanisms and coping strategies and how to use them to help children (and even yourself) process big emotions How the way self-regulation is “marketed” often misses the point by focusing on children learning self-control vs. expressing emotions, and why its important to let children express how they feel even when it is inconvenient to you How to set or maintain boundaries with children while also giving them the opportunity to process their emotions Why we should stop using the word “reinforcement" How sensory integration plays a major role in emotional regulation What the collaborative emotion processing (CEP) method is and how to implement it to respond to children’s emotions in a way that builds their emotional intelligence
