You can't think your way into being a good parent. You heal your way there. Dr. Shefali Tsabary, the pioneer of the conscious parenting movement, has sat across from Lewis before, but this conversation lands at a moment that feels different. The world your kids are growing up in has changed, and so has what they need from you. She walks through what is really happening to a generation raised by algorithms, why boys and girls get hijacked in completely different ways, what waits for any boy left uninitiated, and the quiet trap set for every parent who swore they would do it differently than their own. There is a blueprint underneath all of it. Pillars for raising a daughter who keeps her voice and her boundaries. A plan for a son no one is showing how to become a man. And a harder question sitting beneath the whole thing: are you raising a human being, or a human doing? If you have young kids, parts of this will rattle you. It is also the map you didn't know you were looking for. This week Nicola and Di chat with the wise and insightful Dr. Shefali. Dr. Shefali is a world-renowned clinical psychologist, international parenting expert, and a New York Times bestselling author of 7 books including The Conscious Parent, The Parenting Map and A Radical Awakening among others. She’s also the host of the Parenting & You podcast, founder of the Conscious Parenting movement and has been a guest several times on Super Soul with Oprah. In this episode we talk to Dr. Shefali about what it means to be a conscious parent and how you can become aware of your patterns and belief systems by recognising that your child is a mirror to your unresolved issues. It’s not only our children, we talk about the powerful way that all relationships are like mirrors that show us where we still have places to heal and lessons to learn. Dr. Shefali shares some great examples from her own life as a parent, and how we can practically begin to break down our patterns and not project our expectations onto our children. She helps us understand that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect human - we are all learning and evolving. Dr. Shefali shares about her childhood in India and how she always knew she wanted to leave because of the inequalities she witnessed there. At the age of 21 she moved to the United States, where she studied at the California Institute of Integral Studies and Columbia University and began integrating Western psychology and Eastern philosophy in all of her work. We also talk about her book A Radical Awakening, which helps women see how to break free from societal expectations and live authentic lives. Dr. Shefali talks about the choice we are sometimes faced with between being authentic to ourselves or authentic to the views of others, and that the greatest gift you can ultimately give others in your life is to choose to be authentically yourself. This is such a beautiful and powerful episode, whether you’re a parent or not, because all of Dr. Shefali’s wisdom can be applied to any relationship in your life. We’re so grateful we had this time with Dr. Shefali, who joined us all the way from New York, and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did. This week on Beautiful Inside, I'm joined by Dr Shefali Tsabary — clinical psychologist, bestselling author, and the voice behind the Conscious Parenting movement. But what makes her story matter isn't just her expertise. It's the way she names the patterns so many of us are living inside: perfectionism dressed up as “good parenting”, approval-seeking disguised as “being a nice person”, and the silent burnout of holding everything together. This episode is brought to you by Pulsetto, a wearable vagus nerve stimulation device designed to support calm, stress relief and better sleep through short app-guided sessions. For more information, and to receive 15% off, use the code https://pulsetto.tech/.In this conversation, you'll feel both seen and steadied. Dr Shefali doesn't offer fluffy fixes — she offers a mirror. One that helps you understand why you react the way you do, how to repair without drowning in shame, and what it actually looks like to come home to yourself in midlife. We talk about the emotional moments that make parenting (and womanhood) so charged: the outbursts that leave you rattled, the guilt that follows, and the fear that you're “doing damage”. Dr Shefali shares a powerful reframe — that parenting isn't a performance to perfect, but a relationship to grow through — and the relief in that lands in your body.We also go deep on something many families are navigating daily: screens and tech dependence. Dr Shefali is clear-eyed about how dopamine, swiping, and constant stimulation are shaping our children (and us), and what it takes to set boundaries that don't come from control, but from protection and leadership. And then, the conversation widens beautifully. Dr Shefali opens up about her own reinvention — leaving India at 21, building a life in the US, and later shedding the identity of the “good wife” and the woman who performs stability. It's raw, brave, and deeply liberating, especially for anyone standing at the edge of a life shift and wondering who they'll be without the roles. How to pause, reflect, and repair after you lose your temper — without spiralling into self-hatredWhy shame keeps women stuck, and how to start loosening its gripThe difference between life-enhancing boundaries and ego-enhancing boundaries (and why that matters at home)What screen addiction is really doing to attention, connection, and family dynamicsThe real root of burnout for so many women: the hunger for approval, validation, and praiseDr Shefali's beauty and wellness rituals — not as “self-improvement”, but as self-connectionIf this episode gave you language for what you've been feeling — or a gentle jolt of permission to change — I'd love you to leave a review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. It helps more women find these conversations, and it tells the algorithm this is worth sharing.
What if your child's anxiety, disconnection, screen obsession, or emotional shutdown are not random at all, but signs of a deeper struggle for safety, attachment, and regulation in a world shaped by algorithms? In this episode, Dr. Taz sits down with Dr. Shafali to unpack how technology, social media, and modern stress are quietly reshaping childhood, parenting, and emotional well-being.If you're navigating parenting challenges, emotional overwhelm, or family disconnection and want deeper support, join the Circle here:
Originally aired May 9, 2018. Clinical psychologist, parenting expert, and “New York Times” bestselling author Dr. Shefali Tsabary shares her eye-opening ideas on raising happier, more conscious children. Dr. Shefali believes that traditional methods of parenting and disciplining are broken, and that if done consciously, the parenting journey "holds the potential to be a spiritually regenerative experience for both parent and child." Dr. Shefali also discusses her groundbreaking book “The Conscious Parent,” explaining how to take a hands-on, fully present approach to parenting that will help any child thrive. You’re not reacting to your child. You’re reacting to your ego. In this powerful conversation, I sit down with world-renowned clinical psychologist Dr. Shefali Tsabary to unpack the real reason parenting feels so triggering — especially with teens. If you’ve ever taken your child’s mood personally… spiralled into guilt… or wondered why you “know better” but still lose it — this episode will hit home. Dr. Shefali shares the truth about conscious parenting, present-moment awareness, boundaries that actually work, and the dangerous misunderstanding of “gentle parenting.” This one might just change how you show up tomorrow. KEY POINTS Why most parenting stress comes from not being present The real definition of ego (and how it hijacks your reactions) The subtle difference between validating feelings and condoning behaviour How to respond to teen attitude without escalating The two-step boundary framework that actually works When you need stronger limits — and when you need deeper connection Why saying “I don’t know what to do right now” is incredibly powerful QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “The answer is found in the honesty of the present moment.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Dr. Shefali’s Australian tour – Melbourne (March 11) & Sydney (March 12) More from Dr. Shefali at: events.drshefali.com/australia ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Pause before reacting. Ask: Is this about my child… or my ego? Reflect instead of correct. Calmly describe what you see without judgement. Separate behaviour from identity. Don’t validate harmful behaviour in the name of validation. Use the two-step boundary rule: Connect first (while regulated). If needed, architect the boundary yourself. Say the honest thing. “I don’t know how to respond right now” builds connection, not weakness. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For too long, women have been told that good mothering means perfection - tidy homes, obedient children, unshakable patience. But perfection is a prison. What our children truly need is our presence. In this conversation, I sit down with Dr. Shefali Tsabary, clinical psychologist, best-selling author, and the woman who shattered the myth of the "perfect mother." Through her pioneering work in conscious parenting she has given women permission to break generational patterns, to stop parenting from fear, and to finally turn inward - toward their own healing. Dr. Shefali reminds us that parenting is not about control, it is about connection; that our children are not ours to mold, but mirrors showing us where we are still unhealed. Inside this episode, we explore: The radical truth that our children don't need perfect mothers - they need conscious ones. How to dissolve the guilt, martyrdom, and self-betrayal that women have been conditioned to carry. Why healing our own wounds is the greatest gift we can give the next generation. The epidemic of disconnection among our boys - and how mothers can help bring them back to life. The urgent need for the matriarchal voice - for women to lead not like men, but as mothers of the world. This conversation is a mirror - one that invites you to look tenderly and honestly at yourself. It is a reminder that true liberation is not a battle cry, it's a homecoming. If this episode stirs something within you, share it with another woman ready to step out of perfection and into presence.

Motherhood demands that we see the beauty and the lessons in the micro moments that most people take for granted while mindlessly scrolling on their phones, rushing out the door, or even when they're physically present but mentally checked out. The magic of motherhood happens in the quotidian, mundane, messy interactions, not in the elaborate, grand gestures. The spiritual calling of motherhood is available to every mother; the question is, is every mother ready to answer its call? When our frenetic society obsessed with metrics, productivity, efficiency, and jam-packed schedules is telling us to do more and be more, that should be our cue to slow down and be nowhere else but present.
Hello, Brave Table fam! Oooof, today's episode is pure medicine for your soul—and honestly, I've been dreaming of this sit-down with Dr. Shefali Tsabary for years. You've probably heard her on Oprah, or maybe you've devoured her best-selling books like A Radical Awakening or The Conscious Parent—but nothing beats what we're unpacking today. We went all the way in on what it means to awaken as a woman, especially if you've been playing the “good girl” for too long. We unpack why women—especially those from immigrant, Asian, or traditional backgrounds—feel stuck in roles that shrink them. We talked about breaking the cycle of perfection, what it really means to sit with pain, and how to be a present parent without losing yourself in the process. So, if you've ever felt torn between being the “good girl” and living your wildest truth, or are in the middle of a reinvention season—this episode is calling your name. Pull up a seat, it's time to get brave! What you'll get out of this episode… The “good girl” archetype is a lie.Pain is not your enemy—it's the portal to your most awakened self.Conscious parenting isn't about perfection, it's about presence. You don't have to heal before becoming a parent—parenting is the journey of healing. It's okay if your awakening makes others uncomfortable. Keep rising.Gentle parenting isn't about coddling—it's about connection.Let go of legacy expectations (doctor, lawyer, engineer) and step into your soul's truth.Key Timestamps00:00 – The lie of the “good girl” archetype 06:30 – Breaking generational cycles with in-laws and elders10:00 – How pain becomes the portal to awakening14:30 – The trap of toxic positivity and how to reclaim your true self17:00 – Conscious coaching & transforming your life with Dr. Shefali's Institute21:15 – Holding space as a mother while healing your inner child27:00 – Gentle parenting vs conscious parenting—what's the difference?32:00 – How to raise emotionally resilient kids in the digital age33:50 – What to do when you awaken, but others around you don't36:00 – All about The Conscious Circle community37:00 – Spill the Chai: Guilty pleasures, chai recipes, and brave confessionsTo receive a free gift, email a screenshot of your 5-star review of The Brave Table to support@globalgrit.co

Do you find yourself caught in constant battles with your teen, unsure of how to truly connect? Have you ever wondered how your own emotions and reactions shape your relationship with your child? In this episode of Power Your Parenting: Moms with Teens, Colleen O'Grady speaks with transformational coach Anne Marie Chereso about the power of conscious parenting. They explore how self-awareness is the foundation for authentic connection and why parenting from a place of presence—not fear—can help reduce drama and conflict. Anne Marie shares her personal experiences navigating parenting challenges and offers insight into how our own unresolved emotions can affect the way we interact with our children. Through mindfulness, self-reflection, and a commitment to emotional regulation, moms can transform their relationships by fostering deeper understanding and trust. Author, Meditation Teacher, and Transformational Coach, Annmarie Chereso empowers parents, children and families to discover authentic happiness and true success. With over two decades of expertise, Annmarie has trained educators, students, and parents globally through online courses, coaching, speaking engagements, workshops, and retreats. She's collaborated with renowned leaders including Dr. Shefali Tsabary and The Conscious Leadership Group. This episode highlights three key takeaways for moms. First, true connection with your teen starts with self-awareness—when you understand your own emotional triggers, you can respond rather than react. Second, resisting the urge to control your teen's experience and instead acting as a compassionate witness allows them to navigate challenges while feeling supported. Lastly, making space for daily joy, even in small ways, helps shift the energy in your home and fosters a more positive parent-child dynamic. By embracing conscious parenting, moms can create a calmer, more connected relationship with their teens. Title: No Such Thing As Good or Bad Kids: Dr. Shefali on Conscious Parenting Description: Today, we're taking a trip into the archives to revisit a 2023 episode with renowned clinical psychologist and listener favorite, Dr. Shefali Tsabary, where we dove into the deeply-layered topic of conscious parenting. Those of us in the middle of life, still parenting kids at home, adjusting to parenting adult children who just launched out into the world. or in any season of the parenting journey, really, will find much to learn as we look back (and forward) at our parenting patterns. Highlights from this convo include: Defining conscious parenting and the three stages of the parenting map Debunking the notion that as parents we are supposed to create happy, perfect superhumans by following traditional parenting rules Dismissing the notion that there are good kids and bad kids—and how to avoid using these labels Revealing the five ego patterns that parents might not even realize inform their quest to raise amazing children The three reasons why children act out or misbehave and how you can learn not to shame them for it The results of over-parenting and how it shows up in your adult children How it's never too late to become a mindful parent Segments: Bless and Release: Avoiding difficult conversations Thought-provoking Quotes: The evolution of the planet depends on the evolution of the parent. – Dr. Shefali Everyone wants a new tomorrow. But what we don't realize is that a new future comes with an absolute willingness to disrupt the past. – Dr. Shefali There is no such thing as a good kid or a bad kid. So, what kind of kids are there? Just kids – just humans who are terribly flawed like we are, and terribly, but amazingly blissful like we are. They're just this unique combo and they defy labels. – Dr. Shefali Punishment, shaming, blaming is never sustainable. I cannot tell you how many times a day I tell parents, ‘Listen, you appear to get control in the moment, but long term, it's going to be unforgiving.' – Dr. Shefali How do we constantly show our presence [to our adult children]? Unequivocal cheerleading. ‘I'm thinking of you. I miss you. I'm remembering you. I adore you.' Let them know they are on your mind but not involved in their day-to-day. – Dr. Shefali When the ego crumbles, proportionately the heart expands, and you then are just this heart-centered being able to connect to the other people in a very attuned, compassionate, genuine way. And your children will feel it. – Dr. Shefali Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Conscious Parent by Dr. Shefali Tsabary - https://amzn.to/4aNAPd8 The Parenting Map by Dr. Shefali Tsabary - https://amzn.to/3EER148 Dr. Shefali's previous interview on For the Love:Releasing The Fantasy of “The Good Girl” with Dr. Shefali Tsabary - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-35/releasing-the-fantasy-of-the-good-girl-with-dr-shefali-tsabary/ Guest's Links: Dr. Shefali's website - https://www.drshefali.com/ Dr. Shefali's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/doctorshefali Dr. Shefali's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/doctorshefali Dr. Shefali's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/DrShefali Dr. Shefali's TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@doctorshefali Dr. Shefali's Podcast - https://www.drshefali.com/podcast/ Connect with Jen! Happy Throwback Thursday Heal Squad! Today we are bringing back our conversation with Dr. Shefali Tsabary, a clinical psychologist who draws from both Western psychology and Eastern philosophy, offering her clients a unique, holistic approach. Dr. Shefali sits to discuss her new book, "A Radical Awakening: Turn Your Pain into Power, Embrace Your Truth and Live Free" In our conversation, we explore breaking free from societal expectations and boundaries - particularly the obstacles that often hold women back from becoming their most authentic selves. This is a deep dive into how we can learn to live freely and for ourselves, rather than for anyone else. Healers and Heal-Liners The reason why religion and capitalism work so well together is that religion is “thou shall suffer' and capitalism is ‘oh you're suffering, here I have the drug'. Capitalism preys on the parenting industrial complex. Unworthiness is the prediction of the economic system. Just because we can, doesn't mean we must. Instead, she suggests a mindful approach by acknowledging the body's sensations with curiosity using "Hmmmm," fostering a more effective way to manage anxiety. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://ingridyhelanderlmft.com/dont-ask-why-how-to-ask-the-right-question-when-youre-anxious/ Quotes to ponder: "When you ask 'Why?' without first acknowledging the feeling of your body's nervous system, you can get easily trapped in an anxiety loop that has no end." Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. While we have no shortage of specialists on this show, having an Oprah-backed expert on this week's episode is exceptionally riveting. Especially since it's Dr. Shefali Tsabary (!), a renowned authority on family dynamics and personal development who's published four books (three New York Times best-sellers) and teaches classes and seminars across the globe. No wonder one of America's most powerful media titans is obsessed… One of Dr. Shefali's landmark books, The Conscious Parent, imparts mindfulness tools that can build sturdier and more authentic relationships between parents and children. In fact, authenticity plays a major role in everything we discussed, which includes guru culture, the patriarchy (and how it doesn't need to be seen as innately bad, just like a matriarchy), societal pressure on mothers, and even the individual-effacing dangers of ritualization within any organization or system. Notes: You can register for Dr. Shefali Evolve 2023 Annual Summit, her 7th one, which will take place on October 6th-8th in Atlanta, Georgia.
