Dr. Jasmine Moses is an Anti-Bias Early Childhood Educator dedicated to helping parents and teachers raise and teach the next generation. With a background as an early childhood teacher and Non-profit community worker, she is passionate about promoting fairness and equity from a young age. Her work aims to create inclusive and respectful environments for all children and their families. She offers resources, professional development, and support for implementing Anti-Bias and Anti-Racist practices.  Key Takeaways:  Call In, Don't Call Out: Encouraging conversations around biases by "calling in" rather than "calling out" invites reflection, openness, and growth, creating a collaborative learning environment. Reflect and Unlearn: Just as with anti-bias work, advocating for play-based learning requires ongoing reflection, a willingness to unlearn old perspectives, and a commitment to continuous growth. The Power of Teachers in Shaping Experiences: Teachers hold significant influence in shaping children's understanding of the world and their biases. Their approach can either reinforce or dismantle harmful stereotypes. Be Comfortable with Discomfort: Growth often happens through discomfort. Educators must lean into uncomfortable conversations and situations to foster meaningful change in their classrooms and communities. I don't want to dissuade people from coming. And there's part of me that's like, no, there is bias. We're going to address it, we're going to go head on. A new study by researchers at Washington State University found a “small but significant” effect from training to counter implicit bias in police officers. Implicit bias occurs without conscious awareness and can shape prejudicial attitudes and behaviors. The study recruited 50 police officers in Sacramento, California to participate in video simulations of encounters between police officers and different community members. Two of the study’s authors developed the interactive training program which is being sold to police departments nationwide. The researchers found that officers who completed the training had fewer complaints of discrimination by community members than officers without the training. Police bodycam footage also revealed improvements in trained officers’ behavior, especially in their interactions with people experiencing homelessness. Lois James is the lead author of the study, and assistant dean of research and an associate professor in the College of Nursing at Washington State University. She joins us to talk about the results.

Find her at www.reverendrhetta.com  If you want to be in service to love on this planet at this time, what can that look like? In this interview, Rhetta Morgan discusses how to do  the inner work needed so you can face domination in a potent way:In this tough time in our culture, it's easy to lose touch with our vision for what we desire instead. Touching on awe can be regenerative for those who are feeling exhausted. “There is a way in which we can infuse the most difficult circumstances with a sense of power, awe, and sacredness.”We can face exactly where we are and how we feel, yet also take an empowered, compassionate, and visionary stance. This involves working with all of our identities, from victim to awe-maker, change-maker, and community nurturer.Wholeness and oneness are the lenses she finds most powerful: “It's not about winning. The ‘right side' is the ‘whole side,' as healthy as we can get it.”It's time to believe in the legitimacy of your sense of mission or calling. “You've got to have a declaration: I am here to support this time! I am here to do what I can in this time.” Our ancestors and the planet require it. We must ask, “Who do I need to become so that I can answer that heart call?”“I like to imagine the electromagnetic field of Earth claiming me so that as I move, I move in service to her.”“I like to live as if it is possible for justice to be the way of the world…I am in the ‘yes' of what is possible…We are called to stand before the ways culture works now and offer a different way.” Thanks for listening! In this episode of The Big Hearted Podcast, Victoria talks with Jessica Staines from Koori Curriculum. They discuss some of the barriers that FDC face when embedding Aboriginal perspectives in Family Day Care services in an authentic way. They talk about where educators can find resources that are budget-friendly, and how they can make connections in the Community. Jessica Staines is a Wiradjuri Woman and early childhood teacher. Jessica has worked in early childhood for over fifteen years for a range of service providers in both urban and regional communities. Whilst working in early childhood Jessica naturally found herself supporting educators to become culturally aware and confident in embedding Aboriginal perspectives in their program. In 2017 Jessica featured on Reconciliation Australia's Narragunnawali platform where she advised educators in several videos on how they could begin their journey. Jessica is passionate about Reconciliation, social justice and Anti Bias and encourages all early learning services to sign up for a RAP. In 2018 Jessica was supported by Early Childhood Australia and Educational Experience to take part in the World Forum Foundations Global Leaders Program and she later became the National Representative for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This experience allowed Jessica to network with First Nations People around the globe, learn about their programs and how we can potentially benefit from them in the Australian context. Jessica was the Boolarng program's ambassador for Educational Experience from 2018-2020. Jessica has written for several early childhood journals and texts including “The Anti Bias Approach in Early Childhood”, “The Aboriginal Early Childhood Practice Guide” and Educator Yarns. In 2019 Jessica became the Aboriginal early childhood advisor for TV's Playschool and collaborated on the making of the Kiya Doll. She has advised on many episodes to ensure the inclusion of Aboriginal perspectives and is especially proud of the show's Acknowledgement of Country episode. Jessica is passionate about having Aboriginal culture reflected, included, and celebrated on TV to foster a sense of pride in young Aboriginal children today. Each year Jessica supports vulnerable and disadvantaged Aboriginal families through running the Koori Curriculum Christmas Drive. The drive has been running for four years and in that time Jessica in partnership with Petersham TAFE has supported hundreds of families within the Inner West. In 2021 Jessica became part of the AIATSIS Education Advisory Committee and HIPPY Reference group where she continues to support the development of resources and programs that support Aboriginal children and families in the early years.

We talk about the anti-racism training Briana has designed especially for teachers, and the project she is currently involved in that aims to diversify the Irish education curricula. I hold strong reservations against some of the anti-racism trainings that I've seen be promoted abroad- particularly those based on the Robin DiAngeloite model- as I believe they tend to be superficial and can abet the issue they aim to address. However, Briana's training is a refreshing break from such models and represents a great attempt at getting to the bottom of racism. I hope you enjoy learning about it via the video!

MK and Brandi discussed humans' tendencies to put everything in boxes - to categorize gender, nationality, and ethnicity - and how we can overcome this, particularly when it comes to marketing. MK recommended a remedy to bias in the workplace: an anti-bias committee, consisting of people with varying backgrounds and life experience, who can help reduce bias in marketing collateral, as well as employment branding, such as job posts. Next, MK discussed how today's consumer is becoming more savvy about performative brands, and how companies that are not aligning their actions with their mission and values - will inevitably be caught out. Next, Brandi and MK discussed how this shift is becoming more evident with Gen-Z and millennial consumers, who want to align their purchases with companies that are doing good in the world. He is a committed social justice educator and is well-versed in anti-bias education, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and critical pedagogy. Soobin holds a master's in early childhood inclusive curriculum and instruction from Portland State University (PSU) and is working towards his Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction at PSU with a research focus on social justice in early childhood education. Definitions: Institutional Bias is the tendency of institutions to advantage and favor certain groups of people while other groups are disadvantaged or devalued. Explicit Bias is attitudes and beliefs of individuals about other people or groups of people on a conscious level. Implicit Bias is attitudes and beliefs of individuals about other people or groups of people on an unconscious level. Implicit bias is a problem for educators because it can come into play in a classroom without intent. A Tourist Curriculum is a superficial educational approach that does not make diversity a routine part of the ongoing, daily learning environment. Instead, it is curriculum that “drops in” on strange, exotic people to see their holidays and taste their foods, and then returns to the “real” world of “regular” life. Essentially it treats non-western cultures as “other.”
