This episode is made possible by Arc'teryx. Today, you're about to listen to two legends in ultra running, Clare Gallagher and Brittany Peterson, who give a play-by-play recount of their historic 2019 Western States battle for first and second, a race that many people, myself included, believe changed ultra running forever. Today's episode is hosted by Katie Asmuth! Arc'teryx took their obsessive design approach and applied it to the most important point of contact with the mountains: your feet. Because when you're out there, every step matters. Introducing the Sylan Shoe, which features a propulsive rocker, grippy Vibram outsole, and a cushy midsole to help you cover those mountain miles. What we talked about: 2:15- Reflections on that race 4:55- Brittany's mindset heading into the race 7:05- Clare's mindset heading into the race 13:15- Breaking down the first half of the race 19:15- Leading up to their big race to the finish 32:55- Brittany's mindset during the chase of Clare 42:45- Brittany making the pass 53:00- The final push where Clare secured the win 1:06:25- Favorite memories and reflections from the race Show notes: Follow The Trail Network on Instagram Subscribe to The Trail Network on YouTube The Trail Network Podcast is edited and produced by Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network

#047 - Brittany Peterson is a remarkable athlete and an even better human being.  It was fantastic to talk with Brittany about her time as an ultrarunner and some of her successes and also her challenges.Brittany is going through the process of being sidelined for a bit while she deals with injury.  For someone who has made a career out of running the prospects of not running can be challenging.  Brittany dives into her challenges and what she is doing to look ahead and the hope to be running again soon.My conversation with Brittany also looked at the top moments of getting into the Western States 100 by winning a golden ticket and the humor of bonking in Boise.  Come along and run with Brittany.  You can follow along with Brittany @runhappyb on Instagram.  Thank you for listening to Journey with Jake.  Please leave me a review on Apple Podcasts.  To see pictures and clips from my guests please give me a follow @journeywithjakepodcast on Instagram.

Brittany Peterson is a Minnesota native who has been running since Junior High School. She has been in Idaho for the past 12 years, which is where her ultra-running and mountain running really took off post-collegiately. She has run professionally for Nike Trail since 2018 while she also balances a career as an occupational therapist teaching at a university. Brittany and her partner, Cody, enjoy traveling, running with their dogs and exploring the mountains in their backyard. They put on a Technical Mountain Running camp each year to share their passion and expertise in off-trail, mountain running. Brittany enjoys all distances, but particularly enjoys the 100k distance, where you can incorporate speed, while still having to problem solve any type of situation that may arise during an ultra-distance event. She has finished 2nd and 4th at the Western States Endurance Run in northern California and was the 4th top female in the 2021 Ultra Runner of the Year ranking.  We had so much fun chatting with Brittany.  We talk about the transition from road to mountain running and the importance of keeping it fun.  We discuss how she balances working and running as a professional athlete. Brittany gives some great advice on this topic.  We also had a great conversation about the struggle with comparison to other athletes. We are excited to watch Brittany this year at Western States.  Brittany is one of those people you instantly like.  We think you will enjoy getting to know her a little better. www.brittanypetersonruns.com/running-camps IG- @runhappyb

Ultra runner Clare Gallagher talked with host David Willey just 10 days after her huge win at Western States, a 100-mile endurance run in California. The Western States race is regarded as one of the world’s toughest tests of human endurance. It begins in Squaw Valley, California, near Lake Tahoe, and ends on a high school track in the town of Auburn. Races this long and grueling usually aren’t dramatic but this year’s race was different. Clare was in the lead and running confidently until mile 93, when Brittany Peterson caught her, seemingly out of nowhere, just before the final aid station. The runners emerged in a dead heat with about six miles to go, ridiculously high stakes for a 100-mile race. Clare covered the home stretch, winning by 11 minutes and finishing in 17:23:25, the second-fastest time ever. Clare talks about the six mile effort in detail in the interview and also provides a rare peek behind the curtain at some of the lesser-known aspects of Western States—the personal interactions between runners out on the course, the post-race interview scrum, where finishers struggle to remain upright while providing soundbites they may or may not remember the next day and even into the “pee tent” where top finishers get mandatory drug tests under less-than-solitary circumstances. Besides Clare’s win at Western States, she and David talk about her environmental activism, how climate change may be impacting endurance running as a sport and her unorthodox pre-race taper.
