Does Strava give you feelings of being less than or FOMO? Does it make you question everything about your training and your worth as a runner....just us? Today we talk about how Strava and social media affects our mental health and what we do to control it. We also discuss the top 5 exotic pets we wouldn't want to fuck with on a run...you know the usual. Women who inspire us from the episode: fellow SWAP athlete Katie Asmuth, Saucony ultra runner, nurse practitioner, and mom. Katie embodies light and positivity.
Running injuries are often talked about in hushed tones, as if mere mention could speak one into existence. While undoubtedly the suckiest part of the sport, they're also perhaps the most inevitable, so learning how to approach them mentally can make time away from running an opportunity for growth. Saucony Athlete Katie Asmuth spent much of 2022 nursing a broken foot, yet despite being sidelined, she discovered new ways to connect with the greater trail running community. Now healthy and in the process of building back up for a big 2023, we caught up with Katie to talk about how she dealt with her injury; the strength of being a mother to 2 boys gives her deep into ultras; the major family vibes of the Western States 100; race coverage; and a whole lot more. One of my favorite pro runners is on the pod and I am PSYCHED! Katie Asmuth is one of the best trail and ultra runners in the country, a nurse practitioner, mother of two, and podcaster for Freetrail. I was extremely excited to talk to Katie about how she has dealt with her 2022 injury, a broken foot, as a very competitive person and professional athlete. This is a topic that affects so many runners, no matter their ability. Injury will impact every runner if we run long enough. The time away from the sport can be a challenge physically but it can be just as challenging mentally and emotionally. Katie dives into all of this, and more, with her trademark energy, enthusiasm, and inspired insight. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Professional Ultramarathon athlete Katie Asmuth visits with us to review her recent (second) Western States Endurance Run finish, and also share what she learned as an Ultra Ladies athlete when she first began the sport. Katie first began her ultrarunning training with the Ultra Ladies in Los Angeles. She has put in a lot of dedicated training, and rapidly became an accomplished ultrarunner. Katie finished 5th female at the 2021 Western States, and had a hard-earned finish as 9th female in 2023. Come laugh with us as we dive into what the start of ultrarunning was like for her, what it's like to vomit for 40+ miles during a race, and a bonus: we teach you how to pee standing up!Show Notes:Thanks for listening! This week we have Katie Asmuth on the podcast again! Katie first joined us back in episode 40 to talk about her win at Bandera 100k and now she fills us in on all the crazy life that has been lived since! She shares what it's been like becoming a professional runner with Saucony, her family's move to Mammoth, training for Western States and then running during this historic race year (spoiler alert: it was HOT but the women came and dominated!). Katie as always gives us a huge dose of positive energy and a humble yet hungry perspective on competitive ultrarunning. Her race recap is inspiring and she leaves us with important reminders too, like the importance of verbalizing our goals and believing in ourselves (because why the heck not?!). Katie also talks about how labor and racing are beautiful ways of being a part of the human experience. They are some of the primal, extraordinary events that give us the rawest of emotions and euphoria in life. We also chat about how to draw more women into this sport starting with reframing trails from being intimidating and scary to being empowering and a key factor in restoring our sense of self as mothers. We also need to be vocal about the barriers that hold us back from training and racing so that having more support can become more normal. It takes a village to raise a child (and a mother) and we can help build that village for ourselves and the other amazing mamas around us! It was so fun reconnecting with Katie and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did! Click the link below or search “Run Hard Mom Hard” on any podcast platforms to listen. Hope you all are ready for a good one! A few weeks ago we sat down with Bandera 100k Champion, Katie Asmuth. We talked Bandera, broken noses, and the bigger plans she has for the future, including cashing in her Golden Ticket to Western States. This was a really fun conversation, and the ONLY place you'll find both the male and female Champions of Bandera in one interview. We really hope you enjoy it. This week we chat with Katie Asmuth - a mom of two boys, a nurse practitioner and the recent winner of the 2021 Bandera 100k. Many of you out there have probably heard of Katie - she is now known as the woman who broke her nose mid race, shoved a tampon up it and still went on to win and secure a golden ticket to Western States 100 in June. We get to hear all of the glorious play by play leading up to the race and of course the gory events as they transpired. What stood out to me was her humor and how she embraces the true ultra runner spirit of “smiling through the suck”, not taking herself too seriously and rolling with the punches that can happen during a race - even if those punches are to the face! We also hear about how she embraces the competitive camaraderie with other women and how her true desire is for everyone to work together, feed off each other's strength and bring out the best in each other. Katie shares how she built up to being a competitive trail runner, what training is like with her coach, David Roche, and how she balances training with mom life, working full time and her husband's training (he's also an endurance athlete)! Katie works as a nurse practitioner serving vulnerable, underserved populations and that has given her a deep sense of gratitude for her running and life as a whole. She inspires all of us to go out with joy and thankfulness in our own lives with whatever it is we're doing and lift others up along the way. We were so energized by talking with Katie and we hope you have FUN listening to this episode! Don't forget to subscribe and share with all your friends! Thank you!
