David Hedges is a mountain runner who has made a name for himself with top performances in races and FKTs alike. You likely know him from his incredible FKT on Nolan's 14 last year. Most recently, David set the FKT on the WURL, an incredibly gnarly FKT route outside Salt Lake City which boasts 36 extremely technical miles and over 20,000 feet of vertical. Blake Bekken and SOAR Running put out a great short video recording the effort, which you should definitely watch before listening to this conversation. On today's episode, we take a peek under the hood at SOAR Runnings, proto lab. This is their R and D product incubator born from a desire to experiment and push boundaries… In the days leading up to the London Marathon, SOAR has opened its doors for last-minute check in's with physios, a chance to browse the collection and have some damn fine coffee. They'd also put out the call to join the proto-lab tester team. Two runners were required to put a brand new product to the test- the marathon speed suit. A one-piece aero suit designed specifically to meet the functional requirements of marathon racers. I was there to witness the handover, chat with the two testers and get an insight into how the brand is constantly pushing the envelope when it comes to innovation. Thanks to the team at SOAR for allowing us to come and observe and to Karl and James for being part of the podcast. Knee pain is a common and aggravating injury for many runners. In this week's coaching call, learn how to assess and fix your knee pain through strength work, training strategies, and more! This behind-the-scenes coaching call is with a Team Strength Running member, also named Jason. After a 10-year hiatus, Jason's friend helped him get back into running, and he is currently preparing for an upcoming half-marathon. Jason has struggled with intermittent knee pain. The pain consistently occurs about halfway through each of his training cycles, but subsides during his down time in between harder training. While he doesn't have an exact diagnosis, he has worked with a physical therapist to help relieve his pain. To get to the bottom of this nagging injury, Chris and I talk about his running background, training schedule, and the current pain he is experiencing. Our discussion touches on a variety of topics related to injury prevention, including: The differences between passive and active injury treatment The role of "sandwiching" in injury prevention Three questions to help you assess the severity of your pain What types of workouts are the hardest on your body The importance of base mileage during your off-season Why you need to run slow to run fast This coaching call is full of practical advice you can apply to your own training, whether you're injured or not. Enjoy my conversation with Jason! They have technically-groundbreaking wet and cold weather gear that's guided by a “function-first” mentality. The result is just amazing apparel that is comfortable, light, and just effective and helping you train. A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.

Matt Meyer is a member of the Boulder Underground team, a running and strength coach at Revo Physiotherapy and Sports Performance, and owns a 2:34 marathon PR. With the help of an impressively high mileage training schedule, Matt's hoping to demolish that PR with a 2:25 this December at CIM (California International Marathon). Matt can now handle mileage that's jaw dropping to most of us. In our conversation, Matt and I discuss the the details of high mileage running: The necessity of balancing very easy and very hard running Why running requires having a continuous conversation with your body How strength work builds a foundation for durability The importance of seeing every training block as a stepping stone How to pick the low hanging fruit when it comes to recovery (hint: eat and sleep!) Why training PRs are just as important as race PRs No matter how many miles you run each week, there's a lot to be learned from my conversation with Matt. Enjoy! The art of pacing yourself correctly is the key to success in workouts and races. But like any other skill, it requires practice and understanding what it really means to “listen to your body.” If you enjoy reading about running and training, then this week's guest likely needs no introduction. Matt Fitzgerald is a prolific writer, having authored more than 30 books on endurance training and sports. He has immersed himself in the endurance world and is constantly at the forefront of communicating ways to make your training more effective and productive. Despite our shared last name, Matt is not a relative. But in addition to his writing, he is also a fellow coach and 2:39 marathoner. Matt's most recent book, On Pace, seeks to help runners learn the art of pacing to get the most out of their training and racing. Matt and I discuss many of the essential elements of pacing that he further addresses in his book, including: Pacing as the art of finding your limit Three key elements of pacing How GPS devices can both help and hinder your ability to pace yourself The simple and effective method of using perceived effort How experience and practice are essential to improve your pacing The importance of pace planning and evaluation for training and racing Why the road to pacing mastery is filled with mistakes - just don't make them twice! Runners of all levels can benefit from coaching, but it's important to find the right match to get the most out of your relationship. If you're looking for a coach or considering getting certified as one, you'll benefit from learning more about both sides of the coaching experience. This week's guest on the podcast is a fellow coach and my roommate from a recent running retreat, Bertrand Newson. “Coach B” (as he is most often referred to) came to running later in life, leaving a long career in the hospitality industry fueled by his love of running. Coach B is a Road Runners Club of America certified coach, co-host of the Race Mob podcast, and on the Board of Directors at the 80/20 Endurance Foundation, which seeks to promote diversity in coaching. He is not only an outstanding coach and a prolific competitor, but he is also a master at bringing people together. Coach B's love of running and community led him to become the founder of Too Legit Fitness, a Bay Area group with more than 700 members. Whether you're looking for a coach or thinking about becoming one yourself, Coach B and I discuss a variety of topics that can help you on your journey, including: How Coach B's unique background benefits his coaching Various types of coaching certifications and their benefits What makes a runner coachable Why coaching is both an art and a science, and the role of intuition in coaching The importance of relatability and other qualities athletes should look for in a coach This is both a thoughtful and pragmatic discussion you won't want to miss! We've partnered with Long Run Coffee to develop the first-ever Strength Running Roast. The Strength Running Roast is designed for performance: it's electrolyte-infused coffee that can be ordered as light, medium, or dark roast. It's also free from sugar, additives, flavorings, and dyes. Earlier this year, Tom - the founder of Long Run Coffee - got in touch and sent me a bag of their coffee. I was skeptical at first (would electrolytes added to coffee affect the taste?) but my hesitation was misplaced. This stuff is delicious! This was an easy partnership for me because I love coffee. Caffeine is actually the safest, most studied, and legal performance enhancing drug on the market. Partnering with another small business like Strength Running was a no-brainer for me. I love supporting the small businesses that keep this sport moving forward. If you're not running stimulated, you're running slower. Order your bag.

It doesn't need to be race-related either, it can be training progress, a huge personal feat, returning from injury or embracing a new running challenge. We just want to hear why it's inspired you, and is a worthy winner, in no more than 250 words! To submit your nominee – and be in with a chance to win – simply email your tale to alex.i@soarrunning.com with ‘Performance Of The Month' in the subject line. Nominations must be in by Monday 11th April. Then, I'll be sitting down with the team at SOAR to decide our chosen winner, based on the case we think is most compelling. Mary Cain joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to share where she's been for the past 2.5 years. Cain's name recently popped up atop the results of the New York Road Runners Japan Run 4-Miler in Central Park on May 12th and it was her first race finish in more than 900 days. Cain's name was a major one in the sport back in 2013. As a high school star out of Bronxville, New York, she set high school record after high school record – 1:59.51 for 800; 4:04:62 for 1,500 and 4:24 for the mile. She finished second at the 2013 U.S. Outdoor Championships 1,500 meters and then went on to place 10th at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow. She opted to bypass the traditional NCAA system and turned professional before her senior year of high school. Upon completing her high school degree, she moved to Portland, Ore. to train with the Nike Oregon Project under coach Alberto Salazar. What happened next? Cain opens up about her year in Portland and why she ultimately made the decision to move back to New York City in 2016. She details the list of injuries that have plagued her from following through on the expectations that many had for her. However, she's just 23 years old. Everyone likes a good comeback story and Cain is a believer that she's writing her own. She recently made an appearance in a video of a training stint in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., so we discuss why her form looks so bad in that video but more importantly, why she left that trip with a better perspective on the sport. We work our way back to 2013 and follow her career path until the present day. Plus, Cain shares what she would write in a 'Letter to her younger self' A lot to unpack on this episode of THE CITIUS MAG Podcast with Chris Chavez ✍ SHOW NOTES Mammoth video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2yG_xH91lw Here Comes Mary Cain - Sports Illustrated: https://www.si.com/vault/2013/07/01/106339912/here-comes-mary-cain ❤️SPONSOR Support for the CITIUS MAG Podcast comes from SOAR RUNNING. Mike Marsella of the Boston Athletic Association joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast. You might now know the name yet but you'll definitely enjoy his story. It starts with being struck with paralysis while in the 9th grade, which required surgery and rehab. He was fortunate enough to walk and then run at a high level. He was a member of a 4 x mile high school record-setting team and then earned a scholarship to the University of Virginia. In 2013, Marsella was struck by a car while driving a moped with a teammate. Marsella was in a coma for four days and was unable to remember anything when he woke up. He had a hard time remembering and comprehending things until about two weeks after the accident. He slowly started his recovery process and stayed with his mother in a local hotel until he was finally able to rejoin the team in the fall of 2013. Initially, he struggled. Who wouldn't after that traumatic of an injury? He explains what turned things around for him and how he was able to run 3:59:97 by January 2015. All of that sounds great until he was hit with mononucleosis in the fall of 2015. He returned for the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2016 but then had his 2017 indoor and outdoor campaigns derailed by stress fractures. After much thought and consideration, he returned to Virginia for the 2017-18 season and a sixth year. He ended up making the 2018 NCAA final in the 1,500 meters and decided to finally give the professional ranks a shot. He got an opportunity with the BAA and then finished 5th at the USATF Indoor Championships Mile in February. You'll learn Mike and his whole story on this episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast. ✍ SHOW NOTES Perseverance Pays Off for Marsella https://virginiasports.com/news/2018/6/6/Perseverance_Pays_Off_for_Marsella.aspx Future 'Double-Hoo' Overcomes Brain Injury to Beat 4-Minute Mile https://news.virginia.edu/content/class-2018-future-double-hoo-overcomes-brain-injury-beat-4-minute-mile ❤️SPONSOR Support for the CITIUS MAG Podcast comes from SOAR RUNNING. Real run junkies will love this episode. Ryan Fenton joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to discuss how he went from being Flotrack’s first employee in the running division to the director of global rights acquisitions and partnerships for FloSports. From 2008 to 2013, Ryan was at the heart of Flotrack’s daily digital content. Whether it was recurring video series like Run Junkie or calling high school, college and professional meets on a weekly basis, Ryan helped build Flotrack into one of the go-to media sites for running coverage. In 2012, he gave me a shot as a contributor, which led to three very awesome years where I worked alongside him, Alex Lohr and Mitch Kastoff to keep growing. I owe a lot to Ryan for his help in guiding me through the sport. On this episode, we’ll explore how he discovered Flotrack, what made him leave his job and believe in Mark Floreani’s startup site, what he loved about covering the sport, calling Chris Solinsky’s 10K American record, advice for young people wanting to get into the track media landscape and much more. Plus, what’s he been up to in his new role over the past two years? All that and more on the latest episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast. Support for the CITIUS MAG Podcast comes from SOAR RUNNING. Northern Arizona Elite’s Scott Fauble joins CITIUS MAG Podcast for the third time. Wow. Fauble was the top American at the 2019 Boston Marathon, where he notched a big personal best of 2:09. His PR going into the race was a 2:12:28 from his seventh-place finish at the 2018 New York City Marathon. Fauble was leading the race with four miles to go and on this episode, he’ll take you through his internal thoughts as he’s surrounded by a handful of 2:04 East Africans. Did he think he could win? What was it like when they decided to break away? He puts us in his shoes. He also dives into his training for the race, which included a monster 16-mile workout at Sunset Crater in Arizona. How that gave him the confidence and sign that he was ready for a major breakthrough. With him finally running under 2:10, have the haters been silenced? He responds to the criticism from the LetsRun message boards regarding his last appearance on the podcast and those who defined “good” as a fast time. Plus: With the 2020 U.S, Olympic Trials looming, what are his plans for the fall? All that and more on the latest episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast. Jordan Hasay joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after finishing third at the 2019 Boston Marathon in 2:25:20. That's three major marathons in her career and three third place finishes. This year's race marked her first marathon since the 2017 Chicago Marathon, where she ran 2:20:57 to become the second-fastest marathoner in U.S. history. We discuss what it was like to comeback from a whole year being sidelined by injury. She takes us through her training which included two to three 25-mile long runs; a 20-miler at 5:40 pace and some 200s that got down to 32 seconds. Speed work for a marathon! She shares some insight into coach Alberto Salazar's training philosophy, which sometimes includes surprises at the end of workouts. We touch on her plans to attack Deena Kastor's American record of 2:19:36 at the Chicago Marathon in October; an early preview of the 2020 U.S. Olympic marathon Trials; battling the disappointment of missing the 2016 U.S. Olympic team and the decision to move to the roads. Jordan was particularly excited about the final questions that we ask every guest so stay put for her funniest drug testing story and whether or not she would take the 25 shots for $25 million. This was one of our best interviews yet. Apologies for some minor sound issues while recording. ------ Support for the CITIUS MAG Podcast comes from SOAR RUNNING. Nikki Hiltz joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after winning the BAA Invitational Mile over the weekend in 4:40.1. She sat down with us and David Melly, host of the Run Your Mouth Podcast, for a crossover episode. Last year, we taped a crossover with Sam Parsons so we decided to continue the tradition in Boston. Before Nikki became a professional runner for adidas and the Mission Athletics Club, she was a standout runner at Los Aptos High School in California. She went on to attend the University of Oregon before transferring to Arkansas. She finished her collegiate career as a six-time All-American with a third place finish in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships and runner-up finish a the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Most recently, she was fifth at the U.S. Indoor Championships in the Mile. She currently trains in San Diego with her team and under coach Terrence Mahon. On this show, we discuss her recent win handling success as a high school star, being openly gay, training and racing with her girlfriend, transferring from Oregon and much more. The audio is a little muted for me and David but what’s most important is what Nikki has to say. Apologies about that. -------------- Support for the CITIUS MAG Podcast comes from SOAR RUNNING.
