I get a lot of questions from women about eating more vegetables and having a more "plant-based diet"A while ago I had the pleasure of talking to  Julieanna Hever, MS RD CPT.  aka the plant based dietitian and she really is the go-to for me on this stuff so I am very happy to bring you our chat again.I loved her soo much I bought her book straight after the interview, in the pre-sale, and it's been a go-to for me ever since. She's the author of no fewer than 7 (!!!) books She's also the host of the "Choose you now" podcast and it's very safe to say that she really knows what she's talking about. We talk all things plant-based, starting with what we mean by a "plant-based diet" (because it's not the same as vegan)What a healthy plate of food actually looks like. Then we talk the benefits of a plant-based diet and how to transition to a more plant-based diet if you're not currently getting your fruits and veggies. How easy it actually is to just eat a bit less meat and add more veg to your life whilst keeping it very tasty. Why the "all or nothing" approach just doesn't work when dealing with a change in diet. Why cooking your own meals is key when your goal is to be healthy. And much much more. You can find Julieanna on social mediaFacebook YoutubeInstagramAnd TwitterNo "In the News This week" segment because the news is all wrapped up in Omicron but I did quickly want to talk about one of the most important things a post-partum/diastasis recti personal trainer should ask their clients and which they often don't. They are an entertaining pair, but are serious about bettering the lives of “our kids.” They discuss misconceptions about the work of the Juvenile Court, the Nashville Youth Campus for Empowerment (coming in 2027), and recent legislation that will dramatically impact the juvenile justice system. Spoiler alert: the TN General Assembly did not seek their input, but they remain open and ready to assist when asked…hint, hint. In today's episode, I speak with Julieanna Richardson. She is the founder and president of The HistoryMakers. We talk about her life and her life's work. The HistoryMakers represents the single largest archival project of its kind since the recording of former slaves during the WPA period of the 1930s. The purpose of this archive is to educate and to show the breadth and depth of this important American history as told by the first person; to highlight the accomplishments of individual African Americans across a variety of disciplines; to showcase those who have played a role in African American led movements and/or organizations; and to preserve this material for years and generations to come, creating a priceless collection of 15,000-20,000 of recorded African American testimony. Julieanna L. Richardson, Public Historian and Founder/Executive Director of The HistoryMakers and principal investigator for ScienceMakers has a unique and diverse background in theatre, television production and the cable television industry. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Brandeis University, where she double-majored in Theatre Arts and American Studies. After conducting oral histories on the Harlem Renaissance and Langston Hughes, Richardson attended Harvard Law School. After graduation, she worked as a corporate lawyer, prior to serving in the early 1980's as the Cable Administrator for the City of Chicago Office of Cable Communications. There she established the Chicago Cable Commission, the City's regulatory body. She went on to found Shop Chicago, a regionally based home shopping channel. She was driven to start The HistoryMakers out of a strong desire to make a difference and to leave a living legacy.

This week's inspiring interview was with plant-based dietician Juliana Hever.  chatted about what it means to have a healthy weight and how to achieve that. But you may be wondering why that is so important for the brain? Well, studies have shown that, a high BMI, or Body mass index, which is our weight-to-height ratio, is linked to slightly lower brain volumes. That's one issue, but more concerning for many people as we age, is the waist-to-hip ratio. High BMI AND high waist-to-hip ratios appear to correlate to lower grey matter brain volumes than people who do not have a high waist-to-hip ratio.  Why is this important? Because grey matter in the brain contains most of the brain's nerve cells and includes brain regions involved in self-control, muscle control and sensory perception. That can mean that it is more difficult to do the very things that we need to be able to do to keep our brains healthy – like making good dietary choices, exercising, and even learning new things from sensory input.Links to the several studies are included in this blog post: https://katekunkel.com/blog/f/weight-loss-brain-gainJuliana Hever is a passionate and leafy green-loving author, Registered Dietitian, and fitness expert. Julieanna Hever takes listeners on an inspiring journey into the world of plant-based nutrition, unraveling the profound connections between diet, health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability. From her teenage years, Julieanna's awakening to the transformative power of plant-based living began with the influential book "Diet for a New America" by John Robbins. This groundbreaking work not only shed light on the significant impact of dietary choices on personal health but also unveiled the far-reaching consequences of our food choices on animal welfare and the environment. Despite facing early challenges and skepticism from friends and family, Julieanna's passion for advocating plant-based living only grew stronger with time. Julieanna's educational pursuits led her to attain a master's in nutrition, equipping her with invaluable insights into the pervasive influences of the food industry. She recognized the powerful role played by entities like the dairy and sugary cereal lobbies, which often infiltrate even within healthcare institutions. Becoming a mother marked a turning point in Julieanna's personal journey towards a plant-based lifestyle. Fueled by a deep desire to provide the best possible nutrition for her child, she delved back into research and decided to wholeheartedly embrace a plant-based diet herself. The results were nothing short of remarkable — lifelong sinus infections and persistent acne vanished, replaced by robust health and vitality. This profound personal transformation became a driving force in Julieanna's mission to spread the numerous benefits of plant-based nutrition. Today, as an esteemed advocate for plant-based nutrition and serving as the executive director at Save International, Julieanna is unwavering in her dedication to helping individuals make informed and positive dietary choices. As a child, Julieanna Hever's ballet teacher told her to "cut out snacks," sparking her curiosity about the connection between food, health, and our bodies. This curiosity eventually led her to become a plant-based dietitian, passionate about the power of whole foods and their impact on our health, the environment, and animal welfare. Together, we'll explore the "angry vegan phase" that many of us go through when first embracing a plant-based lifestyle, discussing its potential impact on relationships and the risks of relying solely on processed vegan foods. Finally, we delve into navigating food and body image, offering guidance to unpack layers of trauma associated with food and celebrate the small wins. A major focus of Dr. Mills' patient advisement as well as his lecturing, is the use of nutritional measures to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. He notes that the scientific research literature shows plant-based diets as supporting better overall immune system function, and during work with HIV-positive and AIDS patients at clinics, he's observed that those who go vegetarian seem to improve, with increased energy and higher T-cell counts. He therefore hopes throughout the future to examine further the relationships between diet and immune functionality, particularly the effects of plant-based eating choices upon outcomes for HIV-positive patients. To Contact Dr. Milton Mills go to https://www.preventionofdisease.org/milton-mills Steven Lome is a doctor of osteopathic medicine, concentrating in Cardiovascular Disease and Lifestyle Medicine.
