Our story tonight is called Camping Out and it's a story about a tent set up in the backyard on a summer night. It's also about fireflies blinking from between the trees, a pep talk that helps you forget your worries and a snoring dog, stretched out between the sleeping bags. We give to a different charity each week and this week we are giving to Whaley Children's Center in my hometown of Flint Michigan. https://whaleychildren.org Whaley Children's Center empowers youth and families to overcome trauma. A critical figure in queer Sinophone cinema, Tsai Ming-liang is a major force in Taiwan cinema and global moving image art. A new book by Nicholas de Villiers, CRUISY, SLEEPY, MELANCHOLY, offers a fascinating, systematic method for analyzing the queerness of Tsai's films and reveals striking connections between sexuality, space, and cinema. Here, the author is joined in conversation with Beth Tsai. Nicholas de Villiers is professor of English and film at the University of North Florida.Beth Tsai is visiting assistant professor of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.REFERENCES:Books by Nicholas de Villiers (all with University of Minnesota Press):-Cruisy, Sleepy, Melancholy: Sexual DIsorientation in the Films of Tsai Ming-liang-Sexography: Sex Work in Documentary-Opacity and the Closet: Queer Tactics in Foucault, Barthes, and WarholBook by Beth Tsai:-Taiwan New Cinema at Film Festivals (Edinburgh University Press)Tsai Ming-liang films:-No No Sleep-Stray Dogs-Goodbye, Dragon Inn-Vive L'Amour-I Don't Want to Sleep Alone-Rebels of the Neon God-The Wayward Cloud-It's a Dream-The Hole-Face (Visage)-What TIme Is It There?-DaysOther films:-Saw Tiong Guan / Past Present (documentary)-Fred Barney Taylor / The Polymath -Elizabeth Purchell / Ask Any Buddy (podcast: https://www.ask-any-buddy.com/podcast)-Hou Hsiao-hsien / Le Voyage du Ballon Rouge-Hou Hsiao-hsien / Café Lumière-Albert Lamorisse / Le Ballon Rouge-Wong Kar-wai / Chungking Express-Jon M. A total powerhouse of a woman, my mother has always put my brother and I as her first priority. After giving birth to yours truly, My mom quit her full time job and decided to build her own business in order to make sure she could spend as much time as possible with myself and eventually my brother, Jack. While not as traditionally outdoorsy or adventurous as myself, Kris held down the fort while us boys took off for a weekend of fun, usually sending us out the door with enough food to feed an army. Coral Reefs are the largest living structures on earth and are often referred to as the rainforests of the ocean. These reefs are the lifeblood of the ocean. Their existence provides essential habitat in the form of fisheries, protects fragile coasts as a buffer to constantly crashing waves, supports global economies, provides food to millions, and even are an essential component to developing new medicine and treatments. Todd's love for these wild spaces led to the creation of Reef Ball and has attracted many supporters, including country singer Kenny Chesney! While climate change threatens to warm our oceans enough to wipe out our existing coral reefs, Todd Barber and the team at Reef Ball are seeking to restore these essential habitats, one reef ball at a time. His aim is to use his experience as the third brother in a line of four to discuss the emotional significance of forming, losing sight of, and then rediscovering relationships, and how during the process, we come to understand our relationship to Creation by and large. The final project is an abstract film, but today you'll hear the Audio from the poem. Evan wrote a prelude to the poem explaining how his inspiration always falls back to nature. Hello Campers! Welcome to a recap episode from all the episodes in 2020. At the end of every podcast, I ask each guest the same 5 questions. The final question goes like this: When it's all said and done, you're gone and all we have to talk about is your legacy as we sit by the campfire... what do you hope people are saying about you? It's a simple question that reaches into the deepest bits of our character. What do we want others to think about when they think about us? Everyone's answer was different but tied together by a few similar threads. Being good to people. Being thought of as helpful. Leaving an impact on the lives of those you interact with. It was inspiring to revisit all of these conversations, and I hope you get as much joy out of re-listening to them as I did. Hey friends! The Fireside Short Stories are a new part of Camping Out that I hope you enjoy! These short stories will be sprinkled in every now and then between interviews and will be created and performed by their creators. The idea is to provide a space where people can share their creative sides with all of you! I'll be featuring a lot of different people and perspectives here. If you'd like to share a short story on Camping Out, please reach out to me! You can get a hold of me at www.dancamp.net or through social media. I can't wait to share these with you! Enjoy the first Fireside Short Story: "Why" written and performed by myself. It's a short look into the "why" moments we often face during extreme outdoor adventures. Are there parallels to the decisions we are forced to make in life as well? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/daniel-camp7/support

Hey! I'm Dan Camp! Welcome to Camping Out. Here we are going to explore so many different things, always with a hint of adventure somewhere near the heart. My goal is to create a place where big ideas can be talked about, just like sitting around the campfire with friends. We'll touch on things like outdoor recreation, leadership, emotional vulnerability, current events, and how everyone has the ability to leave a lasting impact on those around them. Sit back, crack a cold one (if you're so inclined), and let's start a fire! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/daniel-camp7/support

While you used to camp out for a pair of shoes or clothing drop, now more often it's based around a raffle system. Diego and Adam share their stories from experiences with each, as well as both how and why the change happened over time. Plus, what direction they see it going in the future.
