We're closing out the year with a few pods that we couldn't quite find a way to squeeze in the feed earlier in the year, including this one which is an interview with Dr Rowan Williams and Prof Laura McAllister who co-chaired the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales. Recorded in October 2024 at Cardiff Business School and chaired by Sarah Lethbridge of the Executive Education team, the pod invites both Laura and Rowan to reflect on the work that they did on the commission, the progress on the recommendations they made in their final report, and to answer questions from an in-person and virtual audience about their work. They also address the new context of recently-formed Labour Governments in Wales and the UK (a long way from the Mark Drakeford- and Liz Truss-led governments when the commission was announced!) and answer questions in relation to local government and the new Senedd electoral system. China is dealing with deflation and stagnation - the world's second biggest economy has failed to bounce back out of Covid, and that will affect us all. So why is this happening, just as most other major economies are beginning to emerge from post-Covid inflation? Is it the iron control of the Communist Party on a capitalist system? Is it Chinese consumers failing to consume? And what happens when the state fails to deliver on the social contract with its people - that prosperity is the reward for staying out of politics? Kent Matthews, Professor of Banking and Finance at Cardiff Business School tells Phil and Roger what to expect as Beijing tries to get to grips with the problem.Brought to you by Wigmore Associates Wealth Management Hosted on Acast. Visit https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/people/view/1432573-galazka-anna for more information. Anna talks through findings from her post-doctoral research in which she observed the practice of "social values creation" within Leg Clubs. This study ran between 1 Oct 2019 and 15 Jan 2020 and included circa 54 hours of observations across 6 UK based Leg Clubs. This work involved obtaining written consent from participants in order to share stories which have subsequently been "para-phrased" in this podcast. Some themes worth highlighting :- 1) Leg Club visitors experienced a 'sense of community' - enjoying the social side of human interaction in a community setting. 2) Leg Clubs are "hubs" of collective learning about wound care and wound management. 3) Leg Clubs work because of the "informal atmosphere" - unlike what typically is found in most hospitals. 4) Waiting in a "social area" versus a "traditional hospital" waiting area made the overall experience more relaxed and enjoyable. 5) Transparency of the surroundings alleviated "fear of the unknown" - likened to a restaurant, where you can see what's going on around you. The Leg Club model of care is brought to life by our esteemed members, volunteers and nurses. Much respect, love and gratitude! Join the Leg Club community around the UK (and beyond) and, together, let's help all generations adapt to a society that benefits all. Checkout our website www.legclub.org for more information.

Welcome to this week's episode of The Mindset Mentor Meets Podcast which hears Angela interviewing Mark Palmer, CEO at Gobeyond Partners, part of Webhelp. About our guest Mark is the CEO of Gobeyond Partners (part of Webhelp), a market leader in customer experience, customer journey design and operations transformation. Mark started his career in France in 1992 working for Valeo (a CAC 40 automotive group) where he spent 9 years of his career. Mark started in production management, established a successful business improvement academy in Paris, became the Key Account Director for Japanese manufacturers in Europe and went onto run the UK Division, appointed on his 30th Birthday. His final role at Valeo was as the global management development director. Mark joined OEE Consulting in 2001 and became MD in 2008. From 2008 > 2018, the firm grew into a mid-tier player and quintupled in size - working with some of the UK's best-known organisations. The business was sold to Webhelp in 2018. OEE then merged with Webhelp's professional services business to form Gobeyond Partners. Mark has a degree in French and an MBA from Cardiff Business School. About this show Mark shares his proudest moments which include how he tackled the difficult task of making people redundant which on first hearing might sound shocking but he goes on to tell us HOW he went about this thankless role with heart and by doing the right things in the right way. The response from the people demonstrates they felt. He generously talks about the lessons he has learnt along the way, including after a sleepless night wondering how he was going to sort out a mess he and the team were in, he created a new way of working based on co-creating value with clients and placing the client at the centre of the narrative.  Mark is cool with showing his vulnerability and says its absolute okay to fail and be 'a bit rubbish sometimes', which is something that will make many of us breathe a sigh of relief. This half hour is packed with open and honest reflection. About the Host Angela Cox, Mindset Mentor is an award-winning behavioural change life coach. In this episode, she shares her advice on improving your MBA applicant profile, applying to data science and analytics programs, and how applicants can prepare during this unconventional time for schools around the world. Hear expert tips for a stand-out application [Show notes] Esmeralda Cardenal is no stranger to Admissions Straight Talk. She was a guest shortly after joining Accepted and is returning to Admissions Straight Talk just about five years later. (Frankly, that's much too big a gap! A real omission on my part.) Prior to joining Accepted, Esmeralda Cardenal was the Associate Director of Admissions at Yale School of Management, the Director of MBA admissions at the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State, and then across the pond, she served as a consultant to the Cardiff Business School in the UK. In the last five years, she's become a much-loved consultant at Accepted, helping Accepted's clients who are applying to MBA, data science, and data analytics programs get accepted. What are your top tips for dealing with a low GPA? [2:17] The GPA is very, very important for the application. If you have a low GPA, there is not much you can do about it. You can't just go back and erase time. But there are ways that you can mitigate the impact of a low GPA in your application. So I would say the very first thing you could do is compensate for a low GPA with a strong score, with a strong GMAT or GRE. That would be the best thing. > (opens in a new tab)">> Another way could be, and you could do it in conjunction with a high score, would be to create alternative transcripts. By that I mean, take classes that are relevant to business school, like accounting, economics, statistics, calculus, and try to get solid A's on those. That would help you provide evidence that you can succeed academically at business school, and also, use the optional essay or the additional information essay. Sometimes they even provide a box in the application where you can explain what happened. As a former director of admissions, I can tell you that there is nothing better than having an applicant who can actually admit the situation because it tells you that the person did research and knew that they had a lower GPA than the rest of the class. So I would say admit that. Explain what happened. The admission's committee doesn't know you, so unless you tell them, they won't know what happened. Was that because of a family illness? Was it because you had to attend to a personal emergency that had you distracted for some time? Was it that you were maybe over-committed in some other extracurricular activities or sports, for example? Or was it that you have to work to support your schooling? Whatever it was, explain it in the optional essay, but also provide evidence of improvement. Mention the classes where you did well, or maybe you had an upward trend. Maybe the first two years were low, but the other two years were higher, and maybe talk about those classes you have taken outside, the alternative transcript that I mentioned, etc., so they can see that you took the right course of action and that you are ready to succeed academically in business school. hbspt.cta.load(58291, 'b6c9f876-0125-49b0-b2cf-3c5c8301554f', {}); When you have a low GMAT, then I would say the obvious would be to (we are in March right now) retake it. This is the perfect time to practice more to get the help of an online class, hire a tutor. You can do those things virtually now, so definitely prepare to retake. If you feel that you have taken it as many times as possible,

Does a big grocery retail chain have anything to learn from a leading automaker? Apparently so. Toyota, with its well-known emphasis on Lean supply-chain practices, was a key inspiration for U.K.-based Tesco, when the latter set out to overhaul its processes. In particular, Tesco was determined to align production and inventory with customer needs – something virtually every company claims to do, but few have managed to achieve with any degree of success. The company's journey is told in a new book, The Lean Supply Chain: Managing the Challenge at Tesco. Its authors, Barry Evans and Robert Mason, join us on this episode to describe the initiatives that Tesco has embraced over the years to build a world-class supply chain. In the process, they challenge some conventional wisdom that has dominated traditional business practice. Evans has held multiple positions at Tesco and is a senior research associate in the Lean Enterprise Research Centre at Cardiff Business School, where Mason is a senior lecturer in the Logistics and Operations Management section. Learn how Lean Six Sigma can be applied to grocery retailing – and the caveats that come with the concept.
