Barry Forshaw – Oldcastle Books – £12.99 Is there any man or woman in England who knows more about crime writing than Barry Forshaw? Here at The Books Podcast he is our go-to man. He is also delightful company. Simenon's Maigret books are the most successful non-anglophone crime series in the world. Easily up there with Sherlock Holmes and Philip Marlowe, but with an entirely different approach to detection. Maigret is closer to psychologist or priest than sleuth. But Simenon regarded his romans dur – hard novels – as his real writing, and Andre Gide said he was the greatest French novelist of his time. Having fairly recently come to … Continue reading →

Author/Artist Astrea Taylor and Author Jason Mankey return to discuss their latest release, Modern Witchcraft with the Greek Gods. From Llewellyn: A Witch's 21-Century Guide to Making Magick with the Greek Gods The ancient Greek gods surround us even now in our modern world. From Aphrodite to Zeus, this book reveals the origins of more than sixty deities and other mythological figures, including the Olympians, Titans, and Primordial Forces. Explore how they've been worshipped across the centuries and how you can work with them in your own practice. You'll meet the gods one by one, exploring their history, unique correspondences, and personal insights from contributing authors who work with them magickally. This book also provides rituals and spells to connect with each deity. Draw down the moon with Selene, cast a courage spell with Ares, and reclaim lost parts of yourself with a ritual for Persephone. By inviting these divine beings into your practice, you can cultivate a magickal life that satisfies your soul to its very core. (Try not to chicken out and hide behind a screen.) CHECK YO'SELF ANYONE with a computer and a connection can throw up misleading information on the internet in seconds these days. Avoid getting duped by checking your sources, sticking to reputable websites and outlets, and fostering a healthy skepticism. Treat the internet like the front page of the National Enquirer - excellent at getting your attention in the grocery line, but also false, inflammatory and generally ridiculous. OPINIONS ARE LIKE ... Americans love to shout about freedom (and we should!), but it goes both ways. Someone else is allowed to disagree with your strongly held beliefs ... just make sure you can tell the difference between strongly held beliefs and basic facts and you'll be a-okay. VOTE We don't care how (friendly reminder: we do not endorse candidates.) Just fill out that little sheet of paper, drop it or mail it (don't forget the stamp) and ask your family and friends to do the same. SHOW UP Attend a public meeting or two, when you can. And when you can't ... The New Testament is the very best book that was ever written. The printing press made it available for the common man; modern technology has served to place innumerable resources for the study of God's Word at our fingertips. Unfortunately, this unlimited access to the Bible has caused many to take it for granted. This must change. God's people must be grateful for the Scripture and give it the reverence and authority it deserves. Support the show (http://www.maplecitybaptistchurch.com)

Host: Robert Price Our guest is philosopher and author John Shook, discussing his experiences debating religious believers and whether such debates are a good idea. Some say no, that such spectacles merely serve believers by making it look like atheists take them more seriously than they deserve. Others say yes, because debates provide a precious opportunity to introduce believers to atheistic arguments they might otherwise never hear. Price and Shook compare notes about debating superstar apologist William Lane Craig, discuss interesting insights on Presuppositionalism and Postmodernism, and talk about Dr. Shook's new book, The God Debates: A 21st Century Guide for Atheists and Believers (and Everyone in Between), an introduction to major issues in the philosophy of religion, as well as debate topics old and new.
