Or the minimal church. Maybe just church. I started last week by asking, “What is the church? Specifically I wanted to look at the idea of Minimal or Essential Ecclesiology. Quick review.   Minimal: The least viable form or the least possible to call something a church. What can you remove from your existing church and it still be a church?   Essential: If you have nothing else you must at least have this to call it a church.   Ecclesiology: doctrine relating to the church   The goal is to consider the smallest, most adaptable, most flexible definition of the church. Why? Because the church is intended to be multiplied in any environment. If church planting is really important, and we are going to do it, we need to identify the seed, the core definition of church. You don't start with the finished product in gardening or in church planting or in disciple making! What do you start with? A seed that contains the DNA of the future life at maturity.   Resources: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/kevin-deyoung/chuch-of-shrinking-definition/ https://www.catalystnw.org/Groups/1000103697/Catalyst/Catalyst_Network/Microchurches/Microchurches.aspx#:~:text=Our%20%22definition%20of%20church%22%20(,Jesus%2C%20they%20are%20the%20church. https://www.tampaunderground.com/microchurches https://saturatetheworld.com/2021/01/26/7-marks-of-essential-ecclesiology/ https://www.ruralministry.net/post/ecclesiology-and-the-rural-church Christ Loved the Church by William MacDonald Rediscover Church: Why the body of Christ is essential by Collin Hanson and Jonathan Leeman The Doctrine and Administration of the Church by Paul R Jackson Doctrine of the Church by Dr. Harold L. This week we look at our unique identity as a local church. We like to use the metaphor of a picture frame when we talk about it. The sides of that frame include our mission, our core values, our strategy/pathway, and the outcomes we want to see growing in every believer in our church. Those four things are who we are as a local church, and they "frame up" where God is taking us. (To read more about this paradigm, read "Church Unique" by Will Mancini. Pastor Josh borrows much from that book in his message this week.) We're sent to love people and invite them to follow Jesus with us.

We'll also talk about Italy's failure to qualify for a World Cup for the 2nd time. Who takes the blame for this? Will Mancini be sacked and who will replace him? Lastly, we'll talk about Gareth Bale and the disrespect by the Spanish media. Is he really a "parasite" in Madrid? Has he not earned the accolades that players like Benzema and Cr7 have received in the past? Is he one of the most scrutinized players today? Question of the week: Which Concacaf team has the best chance at making it furthest in the WC?

HCP - Ep. 75 - “The Nones”On this podcast of HCP, Larry and Drew discuss this ever increasing group of people who don't want to be labeled as having any religion. How did we get here? Are we ministering to these people? Did we do something as church leaders to give rise to this group? In many ways we've gotten it backwards in the church. We preach to 100% of people in our services hoping 50% stick around, and pray that 25% will engage in serving, growing and going on mission. But what we see from Jesus' ministry is the opposite.  He has a powerful connection to the Father as “1”, then invests deeply in discipling and training “3” (Peter, James, and John), and gives a broader focus to “12” (the disciples), sends out the “72” and then we see 120 in Acts 1. What can we learn about how we lead our churches now and some ideas to consider for how we lead in the future. What is the way for the future? Maybe we should see Covid as an opportunity to refocus and redirect some priorities. We should:Start with Mission Not WorshipThink local, not importedGrow people, not just programsMany thoughts and ideas from this podcast come from author Will Mancini and his book “Future Church”.Also find more on “The Nones” in Ryan Burge's book:"The Nones"To find more information about The Healthy Church Podcast go to:http://www.healthychurchpodcast.comor find us on FaceBook!

Thoughts on them? - General thoughts on the Orioles draft process? - It's the end of July, and the trade deadline is nearing. Will Mancini be moved? If you were moving him, where would make sense? - We're a week past the All-Star game were Cedric Mullins started in CF for the American League. We spent an earlier pod talking about him having starter value if he was a .750 OPS guy with GG / plus defense in Center. He's carrying a +.900 OPS after 90 games. League wide, where does rank surprise wise? Are we now believers? - Santander had a .890 OPS over 153 ab's last year, and has a .656 mark after 219 ab's this year. He's got big power, low on-base ability, and seems adequate to slightly better in the OF. Importance of the remainder of the season for him? - Put together a plan for the off-season... what would be your key / primary moves? What are you trying to accomplish?

(00:00-09:12): Many Churchgoers Don’t Know If Their Pastor Is a Republican or Democrat. Still, three-quarters of evangelicals say they agree with their church leaders on politics. Brian and Ian talk about the line between politics and the church. (09:12-18:03): Most people reach peak for being miserable around age 47, study suggests. Brian and Ian talk about certain seasons of misery and depression and what ages they experienced them at. (18:03-27:39): One-on-One with Will Mancini on being ‘Younique’. The most important breakthrough in the intangible areas of our lives— understanding God’s dream for you, life calling, or goal setting, etc.—all require margin. Where there is no margin, there is no imagination. (27:39-37:09): Former ESPN reporter Edward Aschoff had cancer when he died, fiancée reveals. Brian and Ian discuss this heartbreaking update to an already sad story. They discuss the fragility of life and why not to take it for granted. (38:06-48:11): Donald Trump Is Promising ‘Big Action’ on School Prayer to Rally Evangelical Voters. Trump did not elaborate on his plans, but he is scheduled to announce “guidance on constitutional prayer in public schools” on Thursday, according to his schedule released by the White House. (48:11-1:08:36): We are joined by author and writer Michelle Wilkins. She shares her prodigal story of being far from God and how He did miraculous work in her life to return to the faith. She said that when she went away to college, she began to drift away. She was resentful to her parents for not giving her the option to explore atheist ideology. Her journey back to the faith was nothing short of a God-like effort. We also discussed her articles, primarily “Forgive Them, Forgive Them All”. She wrote it based on a personal experience. Forgiveness had been a powerful tool for healing in her life. She says that forgiveness is for you, not for those who hurt you. In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins is joined by Will Mancini, founder of Auxano and author of Younique, Church Unique, and God Dreams. They discuss how the process of becoming who God wants you to be can be challenging and how the church in North America has been operating from a functional Great Commission. BEST QUOTES "All leaders have been given a special assignment from God, but most don't understand it and haven't named it in a real precise kind of way.""Rather than projecting a sense of what I want to be when I grow up, what if I actually take seriously who God made me to be?""Moving into consulting was really about me responding to increased self-awareness that my gift of discernment was higher than my gift of leadership.""Church leaders are addicted to events and products, but it's process that produces the clarity.""My primary legacy is for the local church to return to it's movemental dynamic that Jesus always intended it to have.""We stopped talk about evangelism as methodology and started talking about mission as identity.""The functional church in North America, over the last 20 years, is go in to all the world and make more worship attenders, baptizing them in the name of small groups, and teaching them to volunteer a few hours a month. That functional Great Commission is not going to work anymore.""Where there is no margin, there is no imagination." Much of the Church today seems to be operating with a “functional Great Commission”: Go into all the world and make more worship attenders, baptizing them in the name of small groups, and teaching them to volunteer a few times a month. This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we talk with author and sought-after consultant, Will Mancini, about why intentional disciple-making = real church growth. More than we'd like to admit, so much of our default strategy for seeing people come to faith in Jesus begins and ends with pumping people through our priority programs. It's the classic attractional mindset. In This Episode You'll Learn: Why the Church has slipped into a functional, versus original, Great Commission mindset. How your language will reveal what's most important to you as a church. The 3 types of Christian churches we'll experience in the next 20 years. Why programs don't attract people; people attract people. http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1209249450 (Get started here...) http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1209249450 () From this episode: “The dirty little secret among so many pastors is that we are really good at faking disciples rather than making disciples. Be on the lookout for this special episode on February 3. Today's conversation was prompted by a talk Pastor Josh gave the staff of Next Level Church after witnessing time after time prioritizing tasks over people, along with some breakdowns in communication. In this episode, you will hear Pastor Josh explain several reasons why we don't prioritize people as well as some important principles of communication. 3 Takeaways For Leaders: 1. One of the reasons we don't prioritize people is because the task that needs to get done is more important than the individuals getting the task done. Pastor Josh noticed this reality among the NLC staff and that often times we value the task more than the people getting the tasks done. The focus becomes the task rather than the person. Don't make the mistake of seeing people as the tool in which we get ministry done, but rather, see them as the treasure in which we get ministry done. 2. Another reason we don't prioritize people is the speed at which we're we're leading is faster than our ability to communicate change. Pastor Josh admits that when he started NLC, he led so often at this fast pace of trying to get the big vision across, but he learned that he wasn't equipped with the ability to lead at that pace. Since then he has slowed down in his decision making and leadership role and has learned to lead in the moment rather than live in the future. 3. When it comes to prioritizing people, we must learn to communicate better. Pastor Josh hits on several points for better communication: 1) Never assume anything, 2) Ask layers of questions, 3) Invite people into being part of situation, 4) Listen, 5) Put yourself in their shoes, and 6) Over-communicate. Quotes From This Episode: "The larger an organization gets, the temptation is to forget that each person still should matter as much as they ever did when you didn't have such a large organization." "People matter at every size." "Until we understand or recognize that every person serving under you and alongside of you matters, we're going to fail at this thing called ministry." "One of the reasons we don't prioritize people is because the task that needs to get done is more important than the individuals getting the task done." "You don't lead the moment by living in the future, you have to slow down and lead the moment." "When it comes to leadership, more people do damage through assumption than anything else." "The greatest answers ever given simply come from the greatest questions ever asked." "Leaders should be great question-askers and not just great answer-givers." "Insecure leaders barely ask questions; secure leaders love asking questions because they're empowering people to find answers." "Communication is never strong verbally outside of you being strong listening." "Too many leaders are so busy talking, they have no idea what they should be saying." "Communicate with your mouth, listen with their ears." "Without great communication, you will never lead or be a part of a great church or organization." Statistics can help, but statistics can also hurt. While some statistics offer education in the context of church and ministry, often times, pastors and church leaders will be turned off by negative statistics concerning the church. Warren explains how he tries to do some myth-busting on church statistics so that church leaders will be more encouraged in their ministries. 2. True church growth is not based on numbers, but on discipleship. The easy way to measure a growing church may be to count the number of bodies, but physical numbers is not everything. It may be easy to idolize numbers, but refrain from doing this. Look at the spiritual growth over the physical growth, which includes how many disciples the church is raising. Warren explains two ways of measuring growth: lag measures and lead measures. A lag measure is how many people showed up; A lead measure is what produced those people to show up and how did those people respond in faith to the challenges given. 3. Leadership development is core to a healthy and growing church. Warren mentions that 74% of large churches have a structure for internships so that they are continually training new leaders. Whether it is an internship that grows new campus pastors or a small group that is developing new leaders within, it is imperative that churches find structures to raise leaders who are not only capable of leadership, but who understand the culture of the church. Quotes Mentioned In This Episode: Let's be more excited about discipleship growth rather than just numerical growth. - Josh Gagnon The greatest task the church has to overcome with millennials is trust. - Josh Gagnon Momentum according to size is going to look different depending on where you are. - Josh Gagnon If done well, multi-site is a releasing function for training and moving people from spectators to greater levels of participation. - Warren Bird If the focus is on our comfort, then you're not making disciples. - Warren Bird When we stand before God, it's not going to be about how fruitful we were, it's going to about how faithful we were with what we were given. - Josh Gagnon Don't resent disappointment, embrace it because the moment you start resenting disappointment is the moment you stop dreaming. - Josh Gagnon

Missional Motives are what we value. Values are what drives us to do what we do. They are the burning desire. Jesus challenged and exposed the religious leaders' values. He exposed their values as being different from God's. God isn't worried about their image, like they were. But what did God value? How do our values match with God's? Through this series, I use themes from Church Unique by Will Mancini. This fall, the leadership at CrossPoint went through the vision frame process to discover our uniqueness given to us by God.
