One grew up in Colorado, the other in Illinois. Two redheaded offensive lineman. Both received $2500 scholarships to play Division II football. Ryan Jensen headed south to CSU-Pueblo and Garrett Gilkey played for Chadron State. Their schools were in the RMAC and they quickly learned about one another. The competition grew between the two, especially as Ryan and Garrett began getting noticed by national D2 publications and NFL Scouts. It continued after college: Garrett was invited to the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine and in the 2013 Draft, Ryan was picked one round ahead of Garrett. They still jab each other about it. Their pro careers eventually led both to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Garrett was out of the league and getting his MBA as Ryan was getting a mega contract with the Bucs, being Tom Brady's center and winning a Super Bowl. They stayed in touch and when Ryan was looking to build a house on some land in Colorado, he contacted Garrett to help with the process. Now the two are in business together with Gilk.

Brett is a Rushville, Nebraska native, where was a 4x state placewinner and 2x Nebraska state champion. He went on to wrestle at Division II Chadron State in Chadron, Nebraska, where he became quite possibly the best wrestler to ever don the Cardinal and White. Brett was a 2x national champion, winning it at both 165 and 174 lbs. He is the school's only repeat national champion and is also has the most wins in Chadron State wrestling history. As only luck would have it, Brett was named the Interim Head Coach at Chadron State for the 2012-2013 season before officially becoming the Head Coach a year later. Let me just say this: If you're a current wrestler listening to this podcast and you are contacted by Chadron State to potentially wrestle for them, hear 'em out. Because once you get to know Coach Hunter and the program he is building in western Nebraska, you'll fall in love with the place. With that being said, please sit back, relax and enjoy, Brett Hunter. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lets-talk-wrestling/support

This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring the 2021 AFCA D-II Regional Coaches of the year. These coaches include Kutztown University Coach Jim Clements, Bowie State University Coach Damon Wilson, University of Findlay Coach Rob Keys, Angelo State University Coach Jeff Girsch, and Western Colorado University Coach Jas Bains. Jim Clements recently completed his seventh season as Kutztown University's head coach. Clements has achieved winning seasons in each of his seven seasons at the helm of the Golden Bears, the first KU head coach in program history to open his career with consecutive winning seasons. At Kutztown, he brought KU back to the NCAA Tournament in both 2018 and 2019 for the third and fourth times in school history. In 2019, the Maroon and Gold won their first 10 games to finish the regular season 10-0, before earning a spot in the PSAC Championship game. Clements came to Kutztown after serving as the head coach at Division III Delaware Valley College for eight years where he was a three-time MAC Coach of the Year (2009-11). Damon Wilson recently finished his 11th year at the helm of the Bowie State University football program. While leading the Bulldogs, Wilson has attained a great amount of success winning seven CIAA Northern Division Titles, three CIAA Conference Titles as well as three Black College Football National Championships. Coach Wilson also led the Bulldogs to their fourth NCAA playoff birth since 2015 where they reached the quarterfinals. Prior to Bowie State, Wilson spent time as an assistant coach at schools including Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern and Bowie State. Rob Keys recently completed his 11th season at the helm of the Oilers football program in 2021. He has recorded a 75-43 record with the program as a head coach, which includes a 34-26 mark in GLIAC games and a 27-8 mark in G-MAC games. The 2021 fall season saw Findlay win their first G-MAC Conference Title in program history. In 2017 Coach Keys led Findlay to their first ever NCAA playoff appearance and led them to their second appearance in 2021. Prior to becoming head coach, Keys previously served as the co-defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator for the Oilers from 2000-04. Jeff Girsch, who has spent more than 20 years as a college football coach, will enter his fourth season as head coach of the Rams, and ninth overall at Angelo State. Taking over the program in 2018, Girsch transformed a .500 win team into a national championship contender in just three seasons. The Rams finished the 2021 campaign with an 11-3 overall record, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II National Championship for only the second time in program history. Before becoming head coach, Girsch was the defensive coordinator for the rams from 2015 until being promoted to head coach. Prior to joining Angelo State University, Girsch had spent 18 years coaching at St. Ambrose University, with his last six as the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. He was named the MSFA Assistant Football Coach of the Year in 2008. Jas Bains enters his 13th season at the helm of the Western Colorado football team in 2022, the longest consecutive tenure in the program's history. This past year Coach Bains led the Mountaineers to one of its best seasons in program history going 10-2 and earning a share of the RMAC Conference Title. The co-championship title was the first since the 1998 season, and their NCAA playoff invite was also a first for Western since they last played in the Division II national tournament in 1997. Prior to Western, Bains spent five seasons as a member of the coaching staff at Chadron State, with the final three as special teams coordinator and defensive secondary coach. Chadron's Director of Athletics, Joel Smith, did not believe the lack of competing teams was a reason to turn away this new sport. He saw it as an opportunity. Adding a new sport had the advantage of being a good business decision.

In Episode 003, we have the pleasure of speaking with sprint coach and speed consultant, Justin Wickard. The bulk of Justin's career has been as a university Track and Field coach providing instruction in sprints, hurdles and relays. However, Justin has made a profound career change stepping away from the college sport environment and entering the world of private business, offering his expertise to athletes outside of a school-based setting. The timing of his career pivot could not be at a more tenuous time – during a global pandemic – which speaks to his passion, dedication and confidence around the choice that he has made. While we spend a lot of time discussing the importance of learning and education in preparing us for our careers, sometimes jumping into a scenario with both feet and learning by doing is one of the most expedient means of growing your experience and testing your competence. Justin's story is a perfect example of imposing situational learning on oneself to drive growth and success. While Justin's choice is not necessarily the path for the risk averse, it does provide us with the motivation to explore other options for career development, personal growth and continuing education outside of conventional methods.Justin Wickard is the owner and operator of Tier1Athlete, LLC based in Fort Worth, Texas. He has previously worked as an assistant coach for the track and field team at the US Air Force Academy. Wickard, who joined the Falcons' staff in October 2018, was in charge of developing the Academy's sprinters and hurdlers. Wickard previously worked for five seasons at TCU as a sprints and hurdles coach. In his final season with the Horned Frogs, Wickard helped guide the men's 4x400-meter relay to an indoor time of 3:04.25 that broke a 34-year-old school record, and saw Derrick Mokaleng break the outdoor school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 45.02. During his tenure in Fort Worth, he also had the opportunity to help coach Ronnie Baker, who was the top 100-meter sprinter in the world at one point during the 2018 season. Prior to joining TCU, Wickard served on the coaching staffs at Louisiana Tech, North Carolina, Chadron State and Texas Tech. Wickard is a 2006 graduate of Utah State, where he earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies, with an emphasis in health and wellness. A member of the Aggies' track and field team, he was a three-time West Region qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles and advanced to the NCAA Championships in that event.
