In this episode, I chat with Mary Ellen Hartje, the owner of Old Town Books, about reinventing retirement, the San Angelo community, the ASU Writers Conference, and books!Old Town Books came about, as most independent bookstores do, as a labor of love—love of books, love of bookstores, and love for the “book community.” This labor of love also includes a love for the broader community since we believe that no town should be without the joys that a bookstore brings. In addition to offering books for all ages in a wide range of interest areas, Old Town Books strives to be a community center, a gathering place where people can share their common ideas, concerns, interests, passions, and dreams. In this episode of the African American Folklorist, I speak with Sherley Spears, NAACP Unit 6219 President, President of the National Historic Landmark Fort Concho, and founder of the Buffalo Soldier Project. The National Historic Landmark Fort Concho Museum preserves the structures and archeological site features for pride and educational purposes, serving the San Angelo, Texas community. One significant story coming from Fort Concho and the San Angelo community is the contributions and community development of and by the Buffalo Soldiers. In 1866, Congress established the 9th, 10th, 24th, and 25th U.S. Cavalry Regiments for enlisted colored people in the Army. Eventually, troops from each of these regiments served at Fort Concho. These black troops would be given the name ”Buffalo Soldiers," allegedly, by the Indian tribes because of their dark, thick, curly hair resembling buffalo hair. Fort Concho, originally established in 1867, was built for soldiers protecting frontier settlers traveling west against Indian tribes in the area. A notable member of the San Angelo community of that time was Elijah Cox. Elijah enlisted in the military and was stationed at Fort Concho, in San Angelo, Texas in 1871. Elijah was a fiddler he and his son, Ben played for all of the dances at the Fort. Elijah, born and remained a freeman, settled in San Angelo, Texas, and would learn the songs of the slave from ex-slaves now soldiers. Elijah would become the traditional bearer of these songs as he played fiddle, guitar, and sang. You can hear my podcast on his story here. https://youtu.be/jOV68xA9EBE These, and much more crucial historic narratives are being preserved by Ms. Sherley Spears and the organizations adamant of raising the awareness of African American contributions to the establishment and sustainability of Fort Concho & San Angelo, Texas. https://sanangelonaacp.org/ https://fortconcho.com/home/about/mis... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/africanamericanfolklorist/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/africanamericanfolklorist/support
From Scranton Pennsylvania to Worcester Massachusetts, Pensacola Florida, San Angelo Texas, Rapid City South Dakota, Agosta Georgia, Omaha Nebraska and multiple countries like Korea and Germany, Gerard Mangenot dedicated 22 years of his life to the US military as an Intelligence Officer before transitioning into Real Estate Investing. He had gotten some unexpected experience as a landlord while living in South Dakota house hacking a single family home he bought, which also turned out to be his first rental property when he deployed to Korea. After a rough 3 years in Germany, Gerard was ready to return to the US under any circumstances and was handed a very unfavorable ultimatum that would signal the end of a very self sacrificing yet successful military career, and the birth of something new and exciting: Real Estate Investing! From 2012 to 2018, as a part time investor, Gerard accumulated 8 rental units by transitioning his primary residences every time he got reassigned. Today, Gerard has flipped numerous houses and owns 24 doors as rental properties. He isn't concerned with the number of doors in his portfolio but rather focuses on the performance of each asset and optimizing it. His failing forward teaches us a lot of valuable lessons with flipping, from not doing everything yourself with the renovations to over renovating hoping for a high appraisal. Each lesson learned helped Gerard grow to where he is today and is why he has so many tips and golden nuggets to share on this, our 43rd episode of REIA Radio. Brandon Lawson disappeared in the early morning hours of August 10th 2013. After an argument with his wife Ladessa, he left his home in San Angelo Texas intending to make the three-and-a-half-hour drive to his father’s home in Crowley. He would never arrive. At 12:30 am, just shy of the town of Bronte, Brandon’s truck ran out of gas, leaving him stranded on Highway 277. Over the next 48 minutes, Brandon placed a number of phone calls, including one to his brother (Kyle) for help, three missed calls to Ladessa, and a 911 call that remains the subject of scrutiny and speculation to this day. Unfortunately, we may never know what happened to Brandon that night, because shortly after placing this call to 9/11, he seems to have vanished into thin air.

Her last book, Pearl, was warmly recieved by great numbers and her latest book, Diamond, continues her journey through the early decades of this country and the adventures of those ladies who were membersof Miss Pearls Parlor. The year is 1924. Corsets are out. Freedom is in. Movies are silent and Hollywood is shaping American culture. From coast to coast young girls like Heather Smith dream of becoming a movie star.
