Beloved Author and Apple Authority Passes Away The Apple community mourns the loss of Charles Edge, a renowned author and expert who dedicated his career to empowering users with knowledge. Charles was a cornerstone for many Apple enthusiasts. His acclaimed book series, "Take Control of OS X Server," provided users with clear and comprehensive guidance on managing their server environments. He was also known for his ongoing work on a historical chronicle of computing, showcasing his passion for technology's evolution. Beyond his publications, Charles was admired for his genuine kindness and willingness to share his expertise. He leaves behind a legacy of not only valuable resources, but also a spirit of helpfulness that enriched the Apple community. Command Control Power remembers Charles Edge, a friend and expert we had the pleasure of speaking with. This conversation from 2014 is a testament to his knowledge and enduring legacy. We miss him dearly. Sincerely, Joe, Sam, and Jerry

Most of us will have seen or heard about Fletcher Previn's presentation at JNUC 2023 around the employee choice program at Cisco, and how the numbers stack up for offering the mac. This presentation, and Fletcher's previous presentations for IBM were described from the perspective of the executives and decision makers, and you our dear listeners will be all too aware that implementing a successful program such as this requires a lot of effort, enthusiasm and collaboration at an engineering level to deliver the outcomes that the stakeholders want for the users. Vision Pro could be the next big Apple product to change the way humans interact with computing devices. In this episode, we'll look at some of the SDKs, sensors, and other technologies that have been in the making for a decade that make this technology possible. We'll explore successes and failures of competing platforms, and think a little about the Vision Pro in the sense of device management, support, and what we might do with them in offices, which shapes how we might manage and support them. Bryson Tyrrell and Rich Trouton join us to talk through what we want, what we think we'll get, and how we'll respond to the ever-changing technology landscape. A lot of organizations want to treat device management like we treat code. Check in changes, get a second party to approve the check in, and the change goes live. That second set of eyes on a change provides a proactive approach to the security of changes made. It also helps mitigate small mistakes that can have a substantial impact on how users interact with their technology. We can then string together a collection of workflows to pipeline facts about devices to a SEIM or trigger events in other solutions. This usually involves agents. Yet we need to bootstrap devices into these types of systems, and that means MDM. In today's episode, we'll discuss these types of workflows with Mike McNeil and JD Strong, from FleetDM. Early in the podcast, there were plenty of stories of MacAdmins who had contentious relationships with security teams. We hear less and less of that every year. It still happens, but far less. We've had guests on to tell us how platform teams can work with infosec, but today we're joined by a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) to give some tips coming from the other direction. It's that time of the year again, when Apple drops mad-crazy-awesome-sauce updates on us. We're used to iterative updates that make our lives better. This year we also have new products to manage. No word on whether there will be any management of Vision OS - but we'll soon be managing Apple Watches. Because see, these are all computers - just like the Vision Pro. In today's episode we'll spend far more time talking about hardware, software, and management options. But in the meantime, let's remind everyone that We often see the first release of Apple products as a bit less than. They can come in more expensive than other products in a given category. Like the iPhone and iPod, it will endure its share of ridicule for its high price and derivative functionality, people will complain about its design and point out its deficiencies. But in a year or five, the rest of the world will catch up to Apple's vision. MacAdmins have to manage all kinds of things. We talk a lot about settings and features when it comes to device management. But fonts are one of those things that can be important and in fact a security issue as well. For example, if a drug company uses the wrong font they could face massive penalties from regulators. Employees might send out materials with unlicensed fonts. In today's episode we'll talk about what's involved in font management: how to get the right fonts on the right devices and build sustainable workflows so teams can have access to such an important aspect of computing. Today, let's talk about integrations. Most software companies these days want to be a “platform”. Part of that play is to build APIs, document them, and facilitate other companies building integrations as well. But many of us have unique workflows and so have to build our own. “Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.” - Plato There are so many different ways to learn about the MacAdmin field. One that we haven't covered on the pod is the Lynda.com (now LinkedIn) courses that date back to the era of Mac OS X Server. Today, we'll hear from its creator Sean Collins about his courses, how the industry has evolved, how being considered an industry “expert” helps with building consulting business, and even a little about his upcoming book called “Technically Fit”. Configuring new devices with Automated Device Enrollment can be a thoroughly magical experience for the end user receiving their machine, but Apple doesn't have the entire flow programmed in such a way that it's obvious to the end user what's happening. Packaging every version of each piece of software managed can be incredibly time consuming. Without automation, it would take an inordinate amount of time to download, package, test, and deploy software at a cadence that matches how often third party vendors patch their tools. Autopkg can be one of the biggest time savers for those charged with managing Apple devices. We've discussed it in previous episodes but in this episode we'll talk to Manuela Muñoz Bocanegra about her studies of autopkg at a more academic level. HomeKit and the Home app. There are many like it, but this is the kit (no pun intended) that Apple has vetted for automating the home. This ecosystem of products is the culmination of decades of R&D by the home automation industry, made simple - or simple(ish) by Apple. Yet it doesn't always work as it says on the tin. Apple's version of passkeys are the latest piece of a sprawling identity picture for the Apple platform that isn't widely supported just yet - which is a perfect time to start learning about it. Passkeys aren't just Apple; they're supported on Mac, Windows, Android, and even in our browsers. This evolution in WebAuthn's capabilities means we don't need physical tokens (although that's still an option) to have a second factor in auth flows - nor is that other factor tied to a phone number, making it more secure. But for admins, there are plenty of questions we need to figure out. What do we have instead of a username and what is there in lieu of a password? As we develop solutions that work with webauthn, we often use a reference implementation at webauthn.io to test functionality. Our guest today is one of the people behind that site, Matt Miller. We have these computers. And they are truly bastion hosts. Nothing comes in, and only that with which we want goes out. They're perfect when we finish setting them up. Then people make changes and put apps on there. The changes we can mitigate, the apps require a little more analysis. A common strategy to manage that risk is to employ a reputation-based access such as dictated by zero trust - another is to test apps for vulnerabilities, which in a way feeds back into the zero trust decision mechanism in the end. But what kind of tests can be effective, especially since those compiled runtimes don't tell us a lot about what's going on. We'll chat about this paradigm with today's guest Niels Hofmans, and look for ways to fill up that task list for 2023!
