Cinsault or Cinsaut is a grape you've probably rarely heard of, but if you drink Provence or southern French rosé you have it all the time! The grape is planted widely in the south of France, but the grape's biggest champions are in the New World, where Cinsault is getting new attention for making light, acidic, refreshing reds. This is a warm-climate grape, that actually thrives in dry and hot places. This grape is essential to our changing climate -- it retains acidity with low sugars even in the hottest conditions, providing a lifted, bright note to reds and rosés. Photo: Carignan. Source: Vins-Rhone ___________________________________________________ With typical aromas of ripe red berry fruit, like raspberry, strawberry and cherry, warm spice, and violet or dark flower notes and floral, strawberry, peach, and tea leaf notes in rosé, this is a lovely grape if made well. Where can you find Cinsault as a varietal wine or a big player in a blend? France: Southern Rhône, Provence and the Languedoc have big plantings of Cinsault Other Countries: Italy, Spain, North Africa, Chile, Australia Then we get to the most impassioned fans of Cinsault… Lebanon: In the mountainous region of the Bekaa Valley, Cinsault has thrived for decades. The famed Chateau Musar red relies on Cinsault in its most prestigious blend ________ California, USA: California has the oldest Cinsault vines in the world in Lodi, California at the Bechthold Vineyard which was planted in 1886. ________ South Africa saw growth in Cinsault in the mid 1800s because growers knew it could handle the hot, arid climate around Cape Town. It is a parent of Pilotage. I mention is Natte Valleij as a great Cinsault producer. Other producers from many regions in South Africa are also doing great things with Cinsault. Lebanon wine is intertwined with the legendary Chateau Musar. A winery that survived almost a century of wars and obstacles, while gaining a worldwide reputation amongst the most authentic fine wines of the world with famed ageing potential. I met Marc Hochar a couple of months ago at a masterclass in Germany just before the latest war in the Middle East broke out. The wines were of course amazing and impactful as I expected, but Marc's gentleman-like aura further elevated the experience with deep thoughts and eye-opening questions. I never took so many notes on a wine tasting before. So please listen to our conversation about Lebanon, a truck-fermented vintage, Sergism, what the future might hold for Chateau Musar and much more. Wine books. The wine world would be poorer without them. A good wine book is not just a vinous guide or a reference. It is often a companion, a walking pace way of telling a wine's story. And what could be nicer than sitting comfortably, I'm thinking by the fire, it is December after all, holding and reading a book about the region or the very winemaker responsible for the liquid in your glass? With our world shifting with alarming rapidity to the ether of cloud knowledge, the books produced by a relatively new UK wine publication house, Académie Du Vin Library, are worth celebrating. Hermione Ireland is the Managing Director and Publisher of Academie Du Vin Library and in this episode, she tells us about what led her to her role and the kind of books she is proud of publishing. The creation of the inimitable Steven Spurrier, Academie Du Vin Library is a unique publication house, specialising in books that tell a story. Books that tell a drink's story, such as This fantastic book all about Sherry A life story, such as Jean Michel Cazes's From Bordeaux To The Stars, a regional or a specific estates' story, such as Hermione's desert island wine, Chateau Musar. Aghi Ourad is a Brit of Algerian descent who wants to change the way we think about wine from the 'Arab world' (his phrase).Places like Algeria and Lebanon, where wine production has a surprisingly long history but currently operates in a challenging environment for religious, social or economic reasons.Such wines from Muslim-majority countries, in Aghi's view, are under-appreciated and yet offer great interest and value for wine lovers. So he's set up a business, The Other Grape, to sell these wines and tell the stories of the people and places that make them.Aghi has written movingly about suffering personal humiliation as a result of his 'Muslim appearance' and suffering from imposter syndrome with his own, European society. He's also very honest about the 'schizophrenic' attitude to alcohol in Muslim-majority countries like Algeria. We quiz Aghi about the relationship between Islam and alcohol, as well as the wines from Algeria and Lebanon today. We also dive into the fascinating wine history of these countries - did you know, for example, the following factoids?Algeria was once the fourth-biggest wine producer in the world.Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia accounted for two thirds of the world's wine exports in the 1950s.Algeria was partly responsible for the development of France's famous appellation contrôlée system.Peter also reflects on his recent trip to Lebanon, to film for his new wine and travel show, The Wild Side of Wine, and shares his insights into the wine scene there. We talk indigenous grapes and unique wines, sampling a Lebanese Obeidy (white), an Algerian red blend from the Monts du Tessala, and a tiny-production Syrah from the Batroun hills of coastal Lebanon. There's also poetry in this episode, as well as talk of big guns, power cuts, Islamophobia, drones, phylloxera and what exactly constitutes an, 'angry wine'. We hope you enjoy the episode! Marc Hochar of Chateau Musar - the world famous Lebanese wine - gives a wine seminar about Chateau Musar. This Chateau Musar wine class is presented by Cutting Edge Selections, Broadbent Selections, Toledo Sister Cities International, and Understanding Wine with Austin Beeman.
At the time of this interview, Serge Hochar was the proprietor, with his family, of Chateau Musar in Lebanon. He has since passed away.
