What does 2025 have in store for the fine wine world? How are key players planning for this new year and where will they invest their time, and money? Felicity and Pauline caught up with six major wine personalities, to ask them what they see ahead in 2025. Here is what they discussed: · China: The impact of the country's slow recovery and how the wine market has drastically changed in five years (with some very positive trends, we promise!) · Global: The geopolitical turmoil and taxes and tariffs, both in the USA and in the UK, and how companies are adapting · Consumption: The rapid decline of wine consumption — notably away from home — in major Western markets and the impact on the fine wine trade. Our experts also discuss the different steps they are taking to overcome these challenges. · Markets: How major players are investing in Brazil, South East Asia and new African markets, and what it takes to be successful in these fast-growing markets. · Styles: The “Burgundification” of fine wine and what it means for the fine wine market generally. Many thanks to Polly Hammond, Founder and Executive Director, 5forests; Joao Gomes Da Silva, the Chief Comercial Officer, Sogrape, Portugal; Natalie Wang, the Founder and Editor, Vinojoy, China; Matt Deller MW, Managing Director, Wirra Wirra, Australia; Pierre Mansour, Wine Director, The Wine Society, UK; Edouard Baijot MW, Director Luxury-International, Gallo, USA. SWR launches the Bottle Weight Accord

Sustainable Wine

On Tuesday, 10th October 2023, the Sustainable Wine Roundtable officially launched the SWR Bottle Weight Accord.   The launch followed a 6-month in-depth study into wine bottle weight reduction, which was co-funded by SWR retailer members Alko (Finland), Lidl GB (UK), Systembolaget (Sweden), The Wine Society (UK) and Whole Foods Market (USA). The SWR ‘Bottle Weight Accord' is focused on the light weighting of 750ml still wine bottles with the initial target to reduce the current average bottle weight among its retailer members from 550g to 420g before the end of 2026.   The launch event speakers included: Dr Peter Stanbury, Research Director, SWR Jancis Robinson MW Marcus Ihre, Sustainability Manager, Systembolaget Dom de Ville, Director of Sustainability and Social Impact, The Wine Society  Douglas Bell, Global Purchasing Manager, Whole Foods Market  Ella Worley, Wine Portfolio Lead, Naked Wines USA  Nick Kirk, Technical Director, British Glass   About the SWR Bottle Weight Accord This accord is supported by the following retailers: Laithwaites, Lidl GB, Naked Wines UK, Naked Wines USA, Systembolaget AB, The Wine Society, Virgin Wines, Waitrose & Partners, Whole Foods Market.   The glass bottle is the single most significant component of wine's entire carbon footprint. Research by the SWR shows that as much as half of the carbon impact of wine comes from the bottle itself, a combination of embedded carbon from manufacturing along with the energy required to transport it.   Based on the findings of that research, the SWR has launched the Bottle Weight Accord supported those retail members listed above in order to reduce the average weight of the 750ml still wine bottles they sell from the current average of approximately 550 grams to an average bottle weight below 420 grams by the end of 2026.   This will be achieved through a number of steps: Removing as many of the heaviest bottles as soon as possible; Light-weighting the bottles of “own brand” wines by the end of 2025; Collaborating through SWR to work with branded wines makers. Each SWR retailer member has undertaken to introduce phased reductions within their own procurement processes. The modalities for each member will be communicated to SWR, which will monitor progress over time. In each case this will include providing SWR every six months with the member's average wine bottle weight so that SWR can demonstrate publicly bottle weight reductions over time. As part of this accord, SWR will also work with its members in other parts of the supply chain to facilitate this process of change. This will include working with producers to access lighter weight bottles and providing guidance to bottlers on changes in the management of filling lines. We recognise that there may be challenges in certain areas, for example with the packaging rules of some appellations. However, the SWR believes that taking a collective approach to these issues is the most effective way of delivering change. The SWR sees taking average wine bottle weight below 420g as only the first step, and will be exploring what further reductions will be possible over time. We will also be undertaking further work to address the carbon impact of wine packaging, including light-weighting of sparkling wine bottles, examination of the expanded use of alternative packaging formats, and of bulk shipping. For further information, please contact Dr. Peter Stanbury (SWR Research Director) peter@swroundtable.org or Tom Owtram (SWR General Manager) - tom@swroundtable.org

Wine is good. We want a good future for wine - and the planet. But wine has been described on this pod as, 'the villain in the climate story.' So what gives - and how to turn this around? One UK wine retailer has sent out a rallying cry - aiming to be carbon neutral by 2024 and net zero across its entire business by 2040.  This retailer wants, ‘to be the most sustainable, ethical and responsible wine retailer in the world.' These are big aims - and they belong to The Wine Society. So Peter, ever wary of greenwashing and over-hype, heads over to their HQ in Stevenage to poke around behind the scenes and ask the hard questions like: how on earth can this be done, what are the key challenges to overcome, how much will it cost, will the wines change as a result, and what even is a 'sustainability scorecard'?Along the way we talk insetting (as opposed to offsetting), right-weighting, the demonisation of plastic, solar power, heavy bottles and saying goodbye to capsules.Even forklifts, sweet shops, Mars, bees, alpacas, Elon Musk, leftover wine and lunch get a mention. That, and growing wine in a greenhouse in space...The world around us is changing - wine included. This glimpse into a potentially brighter future of course comes with the usual side-order of wine, as we recommend some delicious drops from sustainable producers stocked by The Wine Society, including the following:Lubanzi Chenin Blanc 2021, Swartland, South Africa (£3.95 per 250 ml can)Dog Point Chardonnay 2019, Marlborough, New Zealand (£22.50)Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas 2018, Paso Robles, USA (£20)All details from this episode, together with photos to help set the scene, are on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E8 - Selling Net Zero Wine: Pipe Dream or In The Pipeline? We love to hear from you so please do get in touch via Instagram or Twitter. California Wine Country
Mark Beeman winemaker at Sebastiani

California Wine Country

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2022 28:01

Dan Berger & Mark Beeman Mark Beeman, winemaker at Sebastiani, is in the studio today to talk to Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Sebastiani wines has been in business since before 1904, but the vineyard goes all the way back to 1825 when the Franciscan padres who established a mission in Sonoma also planted a vineyard that year. That vineyard is still on the Sebastiani property. Samuele Sebastiani came from Tuscany and landed in Sonoma County around 1897, working first as a mason. He built a lot of the facilities and facades around the area and at the winery, including the stone arch gate in the illustration above and the Sebastiani Theater, built in 1933. The winery is gorgeous and one of the great visits in the area. Samuel Sebastiani planted a cherry orchard where Cherry Block is planted today. Samuel's son August replanted it from cherries to vines in 1961. Cabernet has always been at the heart of this winery. They were labeling it since the 1940s and helped put Sonoma County on the map for Cabernet as a variety. They have the huge old redwood tanks that they used to use, that decorate the tasting room. Mark Beeman Mark Beeman grew up on a cattle ranch, his parents were forensic chemists and he got a degree in Geology. Then he joined the Peace Corps and did agro-forestry and conservation work in Tanzania. When he came back from East Africa, he saw that the wine industry was blossoming in eastern Washington and he got a job at Columbia Crest winery. That led to Conn Creek and Villa Mt. Eden. Later he met Paul Dolan and the Thornhill family who were the new owners of Parducci winery in Ukiah, Mendocino County. He worked there about 12 years. A few years ago he went to Maui to make wine, for three years. Now he has been the winemaker at Sebastiani since December of 2020. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the best deals on wine, beer and spirits. After Peace Corps he knew he needed more knowledge so he took courses at UC Davis, took online courses and studied at Santa Rosa Junior College. But Mark also gives credit to his colleages. There are other winemakers in the Foley portfolio, such as Chalk Hill and Ferrari-Carrano. They collaborate, debate, talk and learn from each other. “The education isn't always just at school, it's also with your co-workers.” Dan Berger has brought another cellar wine today, a 2017 MacRostie Winery Chardonnay from Sonoma Coast. It has good acidity, bright fruit, and some complexity. For comparison, Mark has brought a 2019 Chardonnay called Patrick's Block, which Sebastiani controls, so they have full say over everything from dirt to cork. It has lemon peel flavors and Dan says it's “Burgundian,” that is rich but not just fruity, it has rustic character from lees contact and barrel aging. Tastings With its new ownership, Sebastiani has been a part of Foley Food and Wine Society, since 2008. Mark Beeman works closely with the other winemakers in the group. For example, they just met to discuss how to improve white wines. Membership in the society provides benefits at their many tasting rooms and wineries. They then taste their Sangiovese, the grape of Chianti wine. It comes from two differently-situated vineyards in Alexander Valley, which produce complimentary flavors. The oak is very light, which Dan Berger says is important for Sangiovese. It has some cranberry flavors too. At last they taste their 2019 Alexander Valley Cabernet, which showcases what the fruit can do in this area. It won a Double Gold Medal at the SF Chronicle competition.

Hosts Sandy and Michelle are joined by Angela Allison, Co-Founder and CEO of Wine Society. Angela Allison is a millennial entrepreneur who set her sights in 2018 on Napa Valley's wine scene with a new century point of view - wine needed to fit into HER lifestyle which finds her often on the move - whether on a boat, hiking or cross-country treks between her home states of Ohio and California. Her solution for her wine needs was can based. Angela's co-founder and husband is an entrepreneur himself, steeped in the data that drives both real estate and Silicone Valley. That knowledge basis led them to jump into a market space primed for growth. In August 2020, canned wine sales reflected a 68% increase in the year from August 2019. Wine Society's canned red blend, Tempt, scored 94 points at the International Wine and Spirits competition - the only canned wine to do so.Wine Society features rich, matte finished tall cans that hold 500 ML, another deviation from the norm, based on half carafe sizing as Angela feels that is the perfect size for sharing - or not. True to her generational cohort, Angela's vision for the design of Wine Society's can had two key elements - they are eco-friendly and VERY Instagram-worthy. Listen to learn more about the process that led to this beautiful and appealing design.A fun episode to kick off March 2021's focus on women in the wine industry, this episode is a peek into both the wine industry and the entrepreneurial mindset. It does seem as if people revert to the familiar in times of crisis - and we're not afraid to treat ourselves a bit either. With this in mind, we launch a Twitter hullabaloo then taste test the biggest of all wine brands (car crash? Maybe...) We, of course, had to conduct the interview over a few glasses of wine (Bindi Original Vineyard Pinot Noir and a Deep Woods Single Vineyard Cabernet – which was amazing so seek it out!). Lloyd has had a fascinating career journey. He is onto his 5th career now and is bringing a wealth of experience to it. In this episode we discuss: Lloyd’s journey which started out as him being an engineer His MBA and transition to Boston Consulting Group – ever wondered what it’s like to work in place like this?; His career with Coles and Red Bubble; and The Wine Society and how it has transformed from a not-for profit to a corporate entity that is allowing wine producers from all over Australia to be competitive in the market and allow us, as consumers, to try some of the very best wines. Oh he, also runs the market place fromtheproducer.com through the Wine Society which he co-founded and built from the ground up. There is vibrancy and colour to this conversation that I just didn’t want to call short. Listen to this over a glass of good wine if you are lucky enough. Regardless, listen because it’s a good one!

From Eyrie Wines to the Hotel Eyre - From boutique hotels to magnificent waterfront developments, learn the real dirt on this meteoric rise of  Pacific Northwest wine from it’s humble farming origins to a new spectacular waterfront development. In 1977 there was approximately 100 wineries and vineyards combined in the state of Oregon, and today in 2017 there are over 700, with luxury hotels and restaurants accompanying the spectacular rise of the wine industry. Kerry is a sixth generation Oregonian. Her relatives came to Oregon on the second federal wagon train to the territory in 1844 and liked the land so much they stayed and succeeded. Kerry is also an Oregon wine pioneer and has sold wine from Seaside, Oregon to Shanghai, China. She also writes, promotes and speaks about the beverage, food and hospitality industries, but she started by planting one pinot noir vine at a time in the dirt high up on a Oregon hilltop vineyard. Her job was watering the grape vines in their infancy, tying them in the spring and helping harvest them in the falll, followed by learning how to sell the bottles post-production.  This experience compelled her to get a degree in journalism and travel the world writing about and and ultimately selling wine in unusual places, like the tarmac at the Paris Airshow and The Bund Restaurant in a Shanghai skyscraper. She is developing a podcast called Sublime Food and Wines and has written two books, “Vineyard Memoirs” 2004 and Dirt+Vine=Wine 2015. She writes for the Oregon Wine Press and has contributed to the BinWise Wine Blog, a San Francisco technology company wine inventory service used by sommeliers in upscale restaurants.  “You’ll never sell wine here, this is a beer drinking state,” said one of her farming neighbors as her  family planted their Dundee Hills vineyard in 1972.  Well, they persevered and they succeeded, luckily for her because it gave her a lifetime of stories to write about. Helping wine, hotel and hospitality industries tell and sell their stories, their powerful, unique brand message - in a  remarkable, memorable way. I also give presentations and trainings for conferences, retreats and customized company branding campaigns.
