Also: What impact is “wokeness” having on the comedy scene? Is the film and television industry actually, truly, and *really* diverse and inclusive? What's it like acting opposite Kim Coates (who played her season one boyfriend, Graham, on Children Ruin Everything)? And – most pressing of all, at least to Sabrina – does she still want to be a cowgirl?

Illustrating the hilarious and varied ways kids can wreck happiness, alter plans, annihilate goals and dreams, and force parents to re-invent their lives, the series also explores how maybe that re-invented life is somewhat okay, too. Nowhere near as good as that old, really great life. But still kind of nice.

We found him! The man who came up with Bob Loblaw's law blog on Arrested Development. Had to be a Canadian, right? Chuck Tatham, from Listowel in southwestern Ontario, has had a stellar career in Canada and the U.S., writing and producing such shows as Less Than Kind, Arrested Development, How I Met Your Mother and Modern Family.Lately he's been executive producing Children Ruin Everything and the animated series Central Park. He was also previously involved in a couple of fondly-remembered one-season wonders: Andy Barker, P.I. and Back to You. Hear him on how one show led to another, as well as on a new project which brought him back across the border again: "Offside: The Harold Ballard Story." Yes, this is Part II of a podcast from earlier this week featuring Tatham's fellow EP's, Michael Geddes and Jason Priestley. Tatham still hopes to spin Ballard's outrageous adventures into a series based on his pilot script. Paging John Goodman in the lead, I say. In the meantime, enjoy story after story from this talented and very funny Canadian writer-producer -- including the daytime show he most loved to watch as a child whenever he managed to stay home sick from school.

"They were like, we don't know how to get you that."Her first professional gig was the cult classic, "Lost and Delirious" starring Piper Perabo, Mischa Barton and fellow Montrealer Jessica Pare. She was 12 or 13 at the time. "It was a very fun and wild first job."Her favourite all-time TV theme song? Rath breaks with precedent by choosing a great theme from a current series. Check it out on this fun chat with the Children Ruin Everything actress.

Guests: Yankees Broadcaster Suzyn Waldman, Children Ruin Everything star Aaron Abrams. This week in Deep Left Field, host Mike Wilner talks to Suzyn Waldman about her great career and being a true pioneer for women in sports media, and has a wonderful chat with Aaron Abrams about his Blue Jays memories (he was in attendance for both Blue Jays World Series clinchers!) and his terrific television career.
Lifelong pals and frequent co-stars Ennis Esmer and Aaron Abrams mark the end of the first season of Children Ruin Everything by arguing about the entire 007 franchise: The highs, the lows, the tonal shifts, the changing leading men, the quiet refusal to really embrace creative chances that could keep the series fresh. Your genial host Norm Wilner bought a fluffy white cat for this.
Ennis Esmer plays the grass is always greener guy on Children Ruin Everything. Unlike his married workmate James (Aaron Abrams), he's the guy with no kids, no responsibilities, and no money worries. It's a character that should be hard to like but, when it comes to Canadian TV shows and movies, Esmer is always welcome.Born in Turkey and raised in Toronto, the actor-comedian has been the secret weapon on several series. He played “Oz” on The Listener, “Maz” on Private Eyes, Nash on Red Oaks and Rich Dotcom on Blindspot. He acts in Canadian indie films with the sexiest titles, including “How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town” and, of course, “Young People F---ing.”Now he gets to play a guy named Ennis on Children Ruin Everything. The CTV sitcom airs its season finale Feb. 23 and is already renewed for a second season. Esmer has credits on a variety of other shows, including Man Seeking Women, The LA Complex, Covert Affairs and Schitt's Creek. He's been a host on everything from the Canadian edition of Wipeout to the Gemini Awards and, most recently, Roast Battle Canada. Not bad for a guy who arrived in Canada with his family at three and learned to speak english from watching TV!
Despite the title of his new comedy, Kurt Smeaton really does not believe that Children Ruin Everything. The Emmy-winning writer, exercutive producer and showrunner and his wife have, after all, three thriving young rascals of their own. In creating this series for CTV, he wanted to show that, yes, kids can ruin some things, but that life also enters a surprisingly rich and rewarding phase with dependents in tow. In other words, all those surveys that show life is less enjoyable with children? Bunk.Smeaton also talks about growing up in Ottawa, venturing onto sketch comedy stages and writing for shows such as Men with Brooms, The Hour and Mr. d. Besides contributing to Kim's Convenience, he won an Emmy writing and producing on the sixth and final season of Schitt's Creek, the one where, as he points out, they all won Emmys. We also talk about shooting a comedy with kids through a pandemic. Plus we salute a little show he created called What Would Sal Do? We both agree it should have run longer, but at least it pulled him into the New Metric Media universe. That partnership continues to thrive with Children Ruin Everything (Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CTV).
Actor Denzel Washington talks about his turn as Lord Macbeth in the new film The Tragedy of Macbeth, and what the legacy of the late Sidney Poitier means to him. TV writer and producer Kurt Smeaton (Schitt's Creek, Kim's Convenience) discusses his latest comedy series, Children Ruin Everything, and how being a father informs his funniest work. Neuroscientist, author and musician Daniel Levitin tells us how Joni Mitchell encouraged him to make a new album, Sex & Math. Violinist Jennifer Koh discusses her album, Alone Together, based on a project of the same name she launched during the pandemic to help emerging composers.
Red Oaks and Children Ruin Everything star Ennis Esmer joins Tony Ho to discuss his Golden State Warriors fandom, antagonistic step-grandfathers, and to walk them through the tricky process of auditioning. PLUS, Adam sings. Finally.
