Sermon Discussion Guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-ItLsx9tHkt-XPR0RGKSYzytfEvoSQZf/view?usp=sharing - Or just keep scrolling: Sermon Discussion Guide (for use at home this week) Opening prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for completing your work on earth - and continuing your work on my behalf in heaven. AMEN. About Me Have you ever doubted whether you had faith? If so, what were the circumstances? Into the Bible – Acts 7:54-60 Verse 54: “When they heard these things…” Look back at chapters 6-7, and especially 7:44-53. What are the “these things” that infuriated the crowd? Verse 55: What did Stephen see? Identify the comfort of this sight. Verse 56: Identify the name for Jesus in this verse, and compare with vv. 52-53. Verse 58: Who was overseeing this sudden execution? Verse 59-60: How does God describe Stephen’s death (v.60)? Compare Stephen’s words with the words of Jesus on Good Friday. Application 4 I have given them your word. The world hated them, because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I am not asking that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the Evil One. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. John 17 In Sunday’s sermon, Pastor discussed the difference between a “means of grace” belief and a “non-means of grace” belief. What is that difference? Name two reasons why this matters. In Sunday’s gospel reading from John 17, Jesus prays for his believers. What do we learn about Jesus in the Gospel reading, and what does Jesus tell us about ourselves? Identify the specific tool that Jesus uses to protect his people. Look at the verse above. Describe two differences between the world and the believer. What are some of the implications or natural results of the world’s hatred? Look back at the Acts 7 reading from above, and identify the comfort Stephen experienced (and still experiences today). “…but help and befriend him in every bodily need.” The Christian bears fruits of love toward God and neighbor. Consider those in your life, especially those who live in close proximity. Think of a way that you can act as a neighbor toward someone, especially in relation to one’s physical needs - food, shelter, clothing. On your own or with a friend / family member, reach out and demonstrate love in some tangible way this week. “Witnesses of Resurrection Peace - With a Voice of Certainty.” What’s the relationship between Christ’s promise to work through his Word - and our confidence as Christians? Name two ways that we can make greater use of his Word. Jesus prays for us. Write a prayer, thanking Jesus for being our intercessor and high priest. Ask him to continue blessing his Church on earth, especially our work in the greater Toledo area. Prayer: Almighty God, your Son our Savior was taken up in glory and intercedes for us at your right hand. Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever; AMEN.

Happy Holidays, everyone! (Yes, despite the subject of the episode, we're proudly fighting the War on Christmas.) For our last episode of 2018, we've decided to warm our cold hearts with Charles Dickens' classic tale, A Christmas Carol. Specifically, we watched the 1984 edition starring Academy Award Winner George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge, which is a very faithful adaptation of the original story, so even if you haven't seen this particular version, you should be able to follow along just fine. Join hosts Christian Hagen, David Gutsche, and Matthew Bahn on this spooky-sweet adventure! Highlights include: Baby Santa, a great new game that was definitely invented on purpose by David Gutsche, a dark trio of directors, Spoopy Time, mind-blowing trivia, another Christmas movie, Mean Ghosts, the shortest context ever, bad hot takes, and much much more! See you all in 2019!
Shrek left a bad taste in our mouths, so we decided to follow it up with the much more palatable Dreamworks Animated film Kung Fu Panda! You'll positively noodle yourself as hosts Christian Hagen and David Gutsche, along with special guest Joe Swanson, dig deep and try to find the secret ingredients to this kids' action classic's success. Highlights Include: Get Off My Show Russell Crowe, disappointing noodle dad, lipstick on a snake, putting the dump in dumplings, The Pull of the Noodle, too much cheek, too little face, probably the weirdest context-to-movie pairing we've ever had, and much more!
They recently announced a reboot by the Minion people (sorry if this is news to you), so the hosts of Contextual Deviants decided to Shrex their muscles and analyze the original, 2001's Shrek. Christian Hagen and David Gutsche wind their way through this weird and (let's be honest) gross pop culture phenomenon and dig past the memes to the dark heart of the mean green ogre himself. Highlights include: "Shrekmate, atheists," fairy tale ghettos, fairy tale sexual harassment, fairy tale bullying, Eddie Murphy's donkey vacation, the Mandela Effect, the most consistent theme of Contextual Deviants, and much more!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Fateful Findings is no longer available to stream anywhere :(HOWEVER, we've added an intro to this episode describing the plot enough for folks to follow along. And I'd say it's worth it, if only because Fateful Findings is near the top of the list of the best bad movies of all time. Please join hosts Christian Hagen and David Gutsche and special guests Matthew Bahn and Kari Strand as they attempt to create a new game, a new religion, answer one of cinema's most burning questions, and much, much more, all while dissecting an crazed business man's narcissistic artistic passion project!

To celebrate our podcast reaching 15 episodes, we wanted to give you a glimpse of a special context from the unreleased pilot episode David Gutsche and Christian Hagen recorded about Marvel's Doctor Strange! In this clip, you'll hear what we think is the best segment from that episode, the context which convinced us we could make this little show of ours into the weird deep dive it is today. ALSO, stick around as we announce the movie for our next full-length episode! We can barely wait to tell you, it's going to be so good, you have no idea, just wait for it.

Warning: This episode contains spoilers for an amazing video game. Also, sincerely excessive displays of emotional vulnerability and discomfort. The 2013 video game Gone Home was an unexpected instant classic. To understand why, host Christian Hagen explains how the game spoke to something inside himself he didn't even know was there. ALSO, we announce the next movie to get the Deviant treatment!
