Man alive! What a trip! On our last night of the Grouse tour all of us sat down to recap the highs and lows of our trip. Central Montana was lousy with birds this year and boy did we need it after chasing mountain birds. There were plentiful numbers of Sage Grouse. The best numbers of Huns and Sharptails that I have ever seen in the country. And we even found a rattlesnake and lived to tell the tale! Each September, an inexplicable reverence stirs within me as I patiently await the chance to roam Wyoming's boundless public lands in pursuit of the bird that holds my heart—the iconic sage grouse. There's something almost spiritual about stepping into the vast sea of sagebrush and feeling the landscape's timeless pull. For many hunters, pursuing these majestic birds is a rare, once-in-a-lifetime adventure, often meticulously planned months or years ahead. Preparation and knowledge are key in order to appreciate and succeed in this journey. Sage grouse populations stretch across eleven western states—Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Yet only seven states still permit sage grouse hunting, and season lengths and bag limits are carefully controlled.
In this episode of NDO Podcast we visit with Jesse Kolar, Department upland game management supervisor, about the state of our four grouse species, an additional sharp-tailed grouse hunting opportunity open this year and our favorite upland game bird recipes.

I can't help but stare through the conference room's glass curtain wall, in awe of some of the world's most productive wetlands on Earth. This morning, the frozen wetlands are blanketed in snow after this winter's biggest storms pounded the area, which is great for recharging those wetlands later in the year. During spring, summer, and fall, these Great Salt Lake wetlands are so valuable, that they've been recognized as being globally important and critical habitat for millions of waterfowl and shorebirds. But we aren't here to talk about wetlands or shorebirds. It's the sagebrush landscapes beyond the Bear River Delta that this group of researchers, biologists, and ecologists are discussing. As I watch a meadowlark hide under snow-laden cattails, my attention snaps back to the conference room when I hear, “Pinyon jays are where greater sage-grouse were 30 years ago.”

In this episode, Brian and Dave discuss their hunting season experiences, including their travels to Montana and hunting for sharp-tailed grouse and huns. They also talk about the impact of ice and snow on grouse covers in the Northwoods. Dave shares insights into his YouTube channel, Under 40 Yards, and the challenges of the YouTube algorithm. They also discuss the differences between woodcock hunting and grouse hunting, including the behavior of the birds and the hunting strategies involved. This part of the conversation covers woodcock hunting, choosing a hunting dog, the cost of well-bred dogs, the importance of hunting dogs, childhood memories of a short hair, the misadventures of Bandit, transitioning to a short hair, choosing a hunting dog breeder, considerations when getting a hunting dog, the connection to the Northwoods, exploring new hunting areas, the diverse landscape of the Northwoods, grouse hunting in the Barrens, and tips for grouse hunting. In this conversation, Dave Lessard and Brian discuss various aspects of hunting, including the role of a hunting dog, getting started in hunting, the joy of hunting in October, hunting in December, hunting in the snow, hunting quail in Arizona, popular hunting destinations, Pheasant Fest, the challenges of Chicago, and future hunting plans. Follow Dave on Instragram @underfortyyards Watch Autumn Blaze 10 on Youtube on the Under Forty Yards channel Book a October Ruffed Grouse Hunt with Brian at Amaazen Outdoors Takeaways A hunting dog can greatly enhance the hunting experience and make you a better student of the species and the hunt. Getting started in hunting is simple - just grab some shells and a shotgun and go for a walk. It may be challenging at first, but it's a rewarding experience. October is a special time for hunting, and spending time in the woods during this month is highly recommended. Hunting in December can be tough, but it offers the opportunity to hunt when the birds are grouped back up again. Hunting in the snow presents its own challenges, but it can also be a unique and enjoyable experience. Arizona is a popular destination for hunting quail, and the desert birds provide a different hunting experience. Pheasant Fest is a great event for hunters to connect with others and learn more about hunting. Chicago can be a challenging city to navigate, and the Northwoods offer a more peaceful and enjoyable hunting experience. Planning future hunting trips and exploring new hunting spots is an exciting part of being a hunter. This episode brings my discussion with Steve Chindgren to an end. We began the episode talking about a club that Steve and his childhood friend, Jim Hutchins, established as very young boys. Steve tells us about hist 25-year relationship with his gyr peregrine tiercel, Jomo, and tells us about a few close calls. including one where Jomo was lost in the sage without telemetry. We then hear story of "Rocky", who was killed by a golden eagle after along tail chase and killing a sage grouse. "Tava", was an absolutely gorgeous falcon, also killed by a golden eagle, seconds before Steve could reach him. Steve recounts a hawking story of how "Somach" flew prairie chickens at the 2012 NAFA Meet in Kearney, Nebraska. We hear how Steve introduce "Zander" to the drone in his eleventh season, and get an update on his progress to date. Steve tells us about "Comet", a white Jerkin, his physical condition, and how it contributed to his death. At the time the book was published Steve was flying "DC"; we hear about "DC's" love of chasing pigeons, and his struggles with late-season grouse. Steve introduces us to "Badger", who he acquired since publishing the book. The episode concludes with Steve's outlining his thoughts expressed in the final chapter of the book (a dedication to the art of falconry", and his answers to my rapid fire questions. Buy the book here.

In this episode Steve compares and contrasts the various species of falcon that he has flown on sage grouse, and why he believes that the tiercel gyr/peregrine hybrid is the ultimate sage grouse hawk. He also explains how he trains and conditions his birds to hunt sage grouse, how he uses his dogs when hunting, and he also tells us about two his favorite falcons, BBG (a wild-taken gyrfalcon harvested in Alaska), and Kallikak, his spectacular prairie/peregrine hybrid.
Host Todd Helms is solo on this one and as usual he has lots on his mind! He breaks down why it's vitally important to practice shotgun skills, dog training and physical fitness over the summer months. Todd is passionate about all three of these topics and shares his insights from 30+ years of doing all three. Todd also dives into the latest Wingmen film – The Sage Grouse Project. . . this film is the story of what's at stake if Sage Grouse are listed on the Endangered Species List: public land closures and loss of civil liberties being at the forefront of the issue. The Sage Grouse Project drops later this month and is a can't miss, just like this episode!

Author and falconer, Steve Chindgren joins me to talk about his career producing and conducting bird shows, his camp on the Big Sandy, and how he began hawking sage grouse. Steve talks about basic sage grouse biology, the sage habitat they rely on, and the threats to the species. He compares hunting sage grouse to hunting red grouse and sharp tailed grouse. No conversation about hawking winter sage grouse could exclude the topic of golden eagles - Steve shares his experiences with golden eagles, and how he goes about trying to minimize lethal encounters with them.
We have returned from a long hiatus to discuss a wonderful book entitled Bitch: On the Female of the Species by Lucy Cooke. Sarah asked James and Mark to read this book that gives an updated look at Darwin's original model of sexual selection, a topic we covered extensively in Season 4. In this episode we cover the introduction and first 2 chapters of the book.In our conversation about the book, we discuss how Darwin's stereotypical, and simplistic. views of male and female roles in mating and reproduction have persisted 150 years later. As Sarah says, we are still suffering from the hangover Darwin's misogyny. Chapter one of the book does a great job challenging the simplistic notion of what "is a female?", and we explore that topic in detail. Mark was enamored with the existence of gynandromorphs (gyn=female, andro=male, morph=form), organisms that exhibit both male and female phenotypic structures. This led us to discuss the difference between sex and gender and why the simplistic view, often exposed in popular culture of late, of there being only 2 sexes, is incorrect and ignores actual biology. Image taken from https://www.eriebirdobservatory.org/ebo-blog/2021/2/21/a-second-bilateral-gynandromorph-northern-cardinal-in-northwest-pennsylvaniaWe also discuss how stereotypical gender roles influence how biologists interpret the behaviors they observed which often leads to misunderstanding and faulty interpretations. We encourage our listeners to read along with us, as we plan to discuss Chapters 3 & 4 next episode. Lucy Cooke (Photo: David Dunkerley)Here is another example of gynandromorphs, but in butterflies.Image from https://www.earth.com/news/gynandromorphs-half-male-half-female/The opening theme to Discovering Darwin is "May" by Jared C. (Fremont County)- Wyoming Game and Fish is back with another episode of the County 10 Podcast. We take a look at Sage Grouse and lekking season. Nyssa and Rene Schell discuss ethics, the noises that the males make and the best times to view the leks. As well as information on Wyoming's Sage Grouse population. Click below and check out this less than 15 min podcast that is very informative. LEK VIEWING ETHICS ( Thanks to WGFD) Arrive at lek sites at least one hour before sunrise Don't drive onto the lek. Park away from the edge of the lek. Turn off the vehicle lights and engine. Use binoculars and spotting scopes to observe birds. Stay in your vehicle. Do not make loud noises or sudden movements. Do not leave until the birds do. Keep pets in your vehicle. Better yet, leave them home. Do not trespass on private land. Postpone your visit if roads are muddy. Do not construct wildlife or photography viewing blinds on or near lek. Be especially cautious with viewing activities during late March and early April when breeding activity usually peaks. Late April is a better time to visit because most of the breeding is complete but the males are still actively strutting. The weather is usually better too. Lekking Viewing Guide

The Gunnison sage-grouse (GUSG) is a critically imperiled sage grouse species most folks aren't familiar with. Historically, it was lumped in with greater sage-grouse until the 1990s, when biologists began questioning whether or not it should be its own species. It was designated as a new species in the year 2000 by Dr. Jessica Young and her colleagues. Differences in filoplume length, strut rates and vocalizations during lekking season, and genetics were enough to differentiate it from other sage grouse, making it the first new avian species to be described in the United States since the 1800s.
