Dear friend and broadcasting icon Marilyn Denis joins the show this week! She shares her journey through broadcasting, family life, and the evolution of media. She reflects on the joys of Christmas with her family, the challenges of building a home, and the sacrifices she has made throughout her career. The discussion also touches on the impact of social media on broadcasting, the challenges posed by AI and technology, and the impact of scams on public figures. The conversation also touches on celebrity encounters and the balance between privacy and public life. More about Marilyn Denis: In 2023, Marilyn announced she would bid adieu as host of the popular Canadian Screen Award-winning series THE MARILYN DENIS SHOW, following 13 incredible seasons and a 34-year career of daily daytime television. Formerly co-host of Roger & Marilyn, the veteran radio broadcaster now hosts Marilyn Denis and Jamar, weekday mornings on Toronto's #1-ranked radio station CHUM 104.5. A definite trailblazer, Edmonton-born Marilyn became the first female DJ at KRPL in Moscow, Idaho. She then moved to Calgary where she held various radio and television positions including programmer, music director, and traffic reporter. But it wasn't until she auditioned to become Roger Ashby's co-host, that Marilyn found her niche. After interviewing dozens of broadcasters and actresses, Marilyn breezed into CHUM FM in July 1986. After chatting with her for a few brief minutes, Roger immediately remarked, “I think we've found the right one.” Marilyn has always balanced her dynamic radio career with her candid television presence. She first began her career in television by reporting on sports, weather, and entertainment at CFCN-TV (CTV Calgary) and working as a freelance reporter for TSN. Marilyn also shared hosting duties on Bravo!'s Gemini Award-winning concert series LIVE AT THE REHEARSAL HALL and was host of the popular daily show CITYLINE for nearly 20 years. A triple Gemini Award-winner (including back-to-back Viewers Choice Awards), Marilyn received The Rosalie Award, honouring Canadian women who have paved the way for others in radio broadcasting in 2006. CHUM-FM producer, Famous Lost Words podcast host and friend of the show Tom Jokic makes his return to NSTS this week with a brand new angle. Tom does a segment on his podcast called "When Rock Stars Attack", a hilarious take on snippy-ish musician interviews found in the CHUM-FM and MuchMusic archives. Today he graciously shares some of these clips with us, featuring Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr, Jann Arden, April Wine's Myles Goodwyn, and a Beatles skirmish involving George Harrison and Paul McCartney. Lots of laughs and great conversation.
What an honour; this week's guest is iconic Canadian broadcaster Marilyn Denis who's just been announced as the recipient of the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. She expresses excitement about the next generation of broadcasters and their ability to be multifaceted and flexible. She emphasizes the importance of being present in the moment and navigating social media, especially being present for her granddaughter and family. She also reflects on embracing age and wisdom and reminds young women to have purpose and passion in their work. Last June, I got to watch Maie Pauts receive the Rosalie Tromblay Trailblazer Award. There was a 10 minute video summary of her career along with the tributes and highlights. This is a longer version of that.In this episode, you'll hear how Maie got her start in radio at the campus station at Ryerson University in Toronto. She originally wanted to work in TV production but fell in love with radio after joining the campus station. She hosted a funk/R&B show at the campus station before getting her first radio job at an AM station in Brampton. She later joined the legendary CFNY station in Toronto where she worked from 1986-2001. In the 90s, CFNY went through an ownership change and started playing more commercial hits, which upset some core listeners. But it also led to increased ratings. After leaving CFNY, Maie did a short stint in talk radio before joining CHUM FM's in 2002. She later moved to Boom 97.3 in 2010, playing hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s.What's the key to Boom's success? Talking about current events while playing older music. This allows the brand and personalities to connect with listeners of all ages. Finally, Maie received the Rosalie Trombley Trailblazer Award from Radio Trailblazers Canada for her contributions to radio over a 40+ year career. If you would like to nominate someone for that award this year, please nominate them now. Thanks to the our supporters!Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the female voice of your radio station.Matt Fogarty Voiceovers - It's great to have Matt back for 2024 supporting our show. Josie Dye is exactly what radio needs. You may recognize her name from a few places: If you're in Toronto, you'll likely have heard her on Indie 88 for the last few years, or on 102.1 The Edge back in the day. You might have also heard Cynthia & Josie's Unmentionables, her podcast with Cynthia Loyst, which has been blowing up since it launched in 2022. Or, if you're a long-time fan of the Sound Off Podcast, you may remember her as the very last guest we had on before the pandemic hit.Either way, things have certainly changed for Josie since then. Besides the rapidly-growing podcast, she's also moved from Indie 88 to possibly the most well-known call letters in Canada, 104.5 CHUM FM. In this episode, Josie tells us why she made the move, as well as sharing the (mostly) wonderful experiences she's had at all the various stations she's worked in. We also spend lots of time talking about the podcast, which, in only a few months, achieved numbers that took this show years to reach. Oh, and which she didn't even want to do at first. If you're in Toronto, you can hear The Josie Dye Show on 104.5 CHUM FM, weekdays from 3-6pm EST. If you're not in Toronto, you can listen live online here at the same time.A transcription of the show can be found here. A video version of the recording is on our YouTube Page.Check out Cynthia & Josie's Unmentionables on their website, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also connect with Josie on Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram.Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the female voice of your radio station.Matt Fogarty Voiceovers - It's great to have Matt back for 2024 supporting our show. In all the years we've been doing this podcast, we've seen lots of radio lovers come and go. That might lead you to believe you've seen the most knowledgeable, radio-obsessed folks in the industry already, but believe me when I say they pale in comparison to Kat Carter.Kat, also known as The Radio Nerd, has made her whole brand based on knowing cool things about radio (if that wasn't obvious from her title). She started The Radio Nerd in 2019 after ten years of working in the industry, and has since grown to have tens of thousands of followers across her various social medias. To catalogue all the things she touches on would take ages, but to give you an idea: Her website contains blog posts about the state of radio and voiceover, as well as preserving radio dramas of years past from legends like Orson Welles. Her TikTok features tons of helpful tips for aspiring broadcasters, as well as just being generally very funny. Her Instagram is full of neat little tidbits of information, history, and plenty of motivation for anyone interested on radio... The list goes on. The point is, Kat knows radio and isn't afraid to show it.We discuss Kat's radio days, especially her time as a program director and music director at CHUM FM in Toronto, which is where she says she really started to get her confidence up. She shares some of the secrets to building a great program, as well as what caused her to eventually pivot away from working in radio to pursue voiceover instead. If you consider yourself a radio nerd of any degree, you'll enjoy everything Kat has to offer. As mentioned, you can find Kat on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and of course her website. For transcription of this episode, click here. Jim Bauer was one of the voices on radio people couldn't help but tune into. Synonymous with listeners on WKNX in Saginaw, CHUM FM in Toronto and WRIF in Detroit, Bauer also was out East briefly at WHVY Massachusetts, among others. Tuning in to the trusted voice, one could hear classic rock and FM in its earliest stages. He debut songs from Alice Cooper's Welcome To My Nightmare months before the release (Dick Wagner and Bob Ezrin contribution while in Toronto), Rush, partied with Lightfoot and Dylan, interviewed Zappa, and so much more. This show is also a tribute to our departed friend, Jay Brandow who was supposed to share the show with Jim. Aircheck: http://rockradioscrapbook.ca/chumfm-bauer-72.mp3
Broadcasting is a brutal business, especially for women over fifty who may or may not have gray hair. There is one woman, however, who has been at the top of her game, on both radio and television, and she is, of course, Marilyn Denis. Host of the appropriately named The Marilyn Denis Show on CTV, as well as CHUM-FM's perpetually top rated radio morning show Marilyn Denis and Jamar, Marilyn is everyone's best friend. She actually is one of Mo's, and she joins Mo and Wendy for a free wheeling, no holds barred discussion about being a mother, a grandmother AND a newlywed! Not only that, but Marilyn gives us the lowdown on what cosmetic work she's had done. That's something you're not going to hear anywhere else, and we love her all the more for it. Come hear what becomes a legend most. Marilyn Denis is one of the best and most beloved broadcasters in the country, and we would say that even if we didn't know her. She has hosted CHUM-FM's top rated morning show since 1986, and the equally popular daytime talk show “The Marilyn Denis Show” on CTV since 2011. Mother to radio host Adam Wylde (Virgin 99.9), and grandmother to adorable Everley, Marilyn married her high school prom date Jim just a few years ago. Marilyn tells us how they found each other again, and talks about the trials and tribulations of being famous, growing older in front of an audience, and why she's never retiring, because why the hell should she?
In this second installment of our "Guitar Talk" series, I talk shop with one of Canada's top shelf guitarist/singers, Frank Soda. Frank got his first break in the music business as a member of Jon Mykl Thor's band & within a few years, Thor & the Imps morphed into "Frank Soda & the Imps". He learned a lot about showmanship during his tenure with Thor & quickly gained a reputation for his awesome live shows where he would do guitar battles with himself (with the aid of VHS videos on stage) & blowing up TVs on his head. You might think that his showmanship obscured his talent. That was not the case. Early on after branching out from Thor, Frank & his band were sponsored by one of the biggest radio stations in Canada at the time, CHUM FM to record a live album at Toronto's infamous Piccadilly Tube bar. He was signed with Quality records before too long & was a featured player on Lee Aaron's debut album. The pace has slowed down for Frank since the pandemic hit, but he's still active as a session guitarist. If you're into guitar & like hearing from seminal players like Frank, this episode if for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JcW65kpZ5I&ab_channel=Kat%27sMetalLitterBox
In this week's episode of the A Walk In My Stilettos podcast, I bring you another inspiring story of resilience. Blake Carter is a radio and television host, as well as a voice-over artist. She was the host of the morning show “Blake Carter with Peter Kash” on 93.5 The Move for five years, co-host on Kiss 92.5, host on 104.5 Chum FM and more. Tune in to hear how she handles being a humble student of life and how you can too! We discussed:
Completely by coincidence, my guest on NSTS this week is none other than longtime CHUM-FM Morning Show producer Tom Jokic. He was scheduled to appear in my studio two years ago to the day for his episode, but was forced to cancel due to a new concern people were calling COVID. Exactly two years later, Tom makes good on his appearance by turning up here in person to recount some of the great stories he's amassed not only as a producer, but also as the cohost of Famous Lost Words, the excellent podcast he hosts alongside MuchMusic alum Christopher Ward. Great stories, great conversation - Tom's among the best in the business. Dave Taylor is a journalist, broadcaster and former politician. Dave began his career at radio stations in London and Ottawa, spending 10 years in Toronto at CHUM and CHUM-FM before coming west in 1985 as News Director at 107 KIK-FM (now Q107). His career in talk radio began in 1995 on CHQR, and over the next nine years his show became popular enough that he actually got elected as a Liberal (!) MLA in 2004 in Calgary-Currie — a constituency that had never elected a Liberal previously. Dave was re-elected to his second term in 2008. On April 12th, 2010, Dave left the Alberta Liberal Caucus to sit as an Independent. On January 24, 2011, Dave made history by becoming the first Alberta Party MLA in the Legislature. One of this year's Canadian Music Week panels brought together a cross-section of emerging broadcast talent to explore how to elevate young and diverse voices. CHUM-FM morning host Jamar McNeil, Kiss 104.9 Vancouver's Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu, Missy Knott from 95.7 ELMNT FM, Virgin Radio Toronto's Jax Irwin, and Flow 95.3 host Peter Kash came to share their stories of what it's like to be "the other" in what's a largely white, male-dominated industry. On this episode of Broadcast Dialogue - The Podcast, we bring you highlights from that panel, moderated by Maureen Holloway, followed by special guest and broadcasting executive Denise Donlon, who is known for her leadership in hiring diverse talent, particularly at MuchMusic. Donlon says diverse hiring is not only morally right, it makes good business sense. Amanda Logan headed west in 2008 to Regina, Saskatchewan where she did evenings at 104.9 The Wolf. Amazingly, we still have audio from that era and it makes an appearance in this podcast. A few weeks ago, The evening personality at Toronto's Z103.5, got married and in lieu of a wedding present, I figured a podcast appearance would suffice. We talked about her journey west and then back east to the Big Smoke where she worked at Corus, CHUM-FM and now Evanov's flagship station Z103.5. She also was the 2013 winner of the Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year award in memory of Steve Young. The last few years have seen Amanda add teaching, voiceover, yin yoga, pugs and now a husband to the roster. (She is also the imaging voice of a number of radio stations across North America and podcasts around the world) Her Voiceover page is located here. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogic

Peabody Energy is a massive coal company that recently filed for bankruptcy, and during these proceedings has revealed the monumental degree to which this company was funding public deception and political lobbying around science denial regarding climate change. The question is, was this a lone wolf? A bad actor? Or the norm. In the middle of the program we take a bit of a break from the heavy news to chat with Toronto's music station voice from CHUM FM for the last 40 years Ingrid Schumacher. Ingrid talks about her thoughts on how Toronto has grown up in the last 40 years, animal cruelty and her ability to use her giant microphone to talk about important issues of the day as a music programmer. Finally Stefan and Daryn can't NOT mention the horrific shooting over the weekend, Stefan was already writing a piece about activism in the age of global terror, and so we preview that with some comments about recent events at the end of the program. This is just a brief!
