This week we take a look at Cinema Speculation
If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! In our final chapter on the year in cinema for 1999 we watch the epic in length (and in frogs and misogyny as is the standard combination) MAGNOLIA from Paul Thomas Anderson and his mostly returning cast from BOOGIE NIGHTS. What this film lacks in pornography it makes up for in Tom Cruise. A more than fair trade. Happy 2025 everyone and on to the next Movie Book Club! Enjoy and catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! A Christmas double feature in search of a DIE HARD or LOVE ACTUALLY! What is this madness? A Christmas special on a podcast called TRILOGY IN THEORY... missing the third part of the trilogy? That's where we look at the Netflix original LOVE HARD which presents two dating app aficionados finding each other across the country with that annual holiday debate: is DIE HARD a Christmas movie? So we pair that Netflix "content" with a proper film... that proper film being John Frankenheimer's REINDEER GAMES. This may not be the best example of the superior nature of movies designed for theatrical release but it does allow us to pontificate on the conundrum that is Xmas at the Movies and hopefully find a third film to make a TRILOGY IN THEORY! Happy holidays! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Third Part in Steven Soderbergh's Whistleblowers Trilogy We finish up this month's trilogy and our TWO HUNDREDTH EPISODE with Matt Damon at peak schlub as THE INFORMANT! The exclamation point is included in the title of the film; not a measure of our excitement. For one host despises Matt Damon and the other one is still trying to understand the motivations of a man making six figures and married to Melanie Lynskey to blow it all up! Now that exclamation point was intended as we will spend the next two hundred episodes of TRILOGY IN THEORY trying to understand such a man. Enjoy! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! If a filmmaker ever wants to make people uncomfortable just complete your passion project which is seen as dangerous and very progressive... and then wait a quarter century (or less) and one can upset an entirely new demographic of people who see your movie as dangerous and backwards! It's these murky waters that two straight men enter and attempt to discuss BOYS DON'T CRY as a flick that for obvious reasons is just a bad time. Thankfully this discussion is behind a paywall and more importantly... no one listens to us anyway! Enjoy and catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Second Part in Steven Soderbergh's Whistleblowers Trilogy A little Oscar talk. A little Marvel Cinematic Universe talk. All in service of the decidedly populist fare that Steven Soderbergh served up with Julia Robert's Academy Award winning performance in ERIN BROCKOVICH. Because when dealing with cancer and corporate greed you need a genuine movie star insulting people's shoes. Enjoy! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! While we can all agree that HEAT is Michael Mann's masterpiece and to a somewhat lesser degree that MANHUNTER is the Hannibal Lector cinematic masterpiece... what about THE INSIDER? How does this one rank in the Mann canon if it perhaps the greatest film of the BEST MOVIE YEAR EVER? It's pretty good. We hope you enjoy it. The First Part in Steven Soderbergh's Whistleblowers Trilogy A divisive audio commentary track for THE LIMEY provides some amusement for one host and despair for another as two children of the 90s try and define what the 60s icons Terence Stamp and Peter Fonda mean to them. The answer? Not much but this movie is cool. Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! George Clooney and Spike Jonze in a heist movie together is not exactly OCEAN'S ELEVEN and director David O. Russell is no Steven Soderbergh as we near the end of our journey through Brian Raftery's BEST. MOVIE. YEAR. EVER. The Third Part in our Coup d'etat Cinema Trilogy The failure of Warner Bros. Project Popcorn to overthrow cinema is discussed in regards to James Gunn's streaming loss leader THE SUICIDE SQUAD... and it's delightful! Yes, it's noble failure lead to even more television with spinoffs but you don't see Matt Reeves THE BATMAN catching flak for that so instead we revel in the charms of a true comic book movie where our heroes ponder if they are being sent off to fight something that is slang for butthole. How's the for the SEO on these show notes? Welcome, new listeners to Yet. Another. Movie. Podcast! Enjoy. Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Second Part in our Coup d'état Cinema Trilogy What was once the third greatest film of all time is merely the third greatest film in its own trilogy as revisit with some morbid curiosity the youthful indiscretions of ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO. And yes... DESPERADO truly is THE GODFATHER PART TWO of the EL MARIACHI trilogy. Now how this compares to the SPY KIDS cinematic universe, well, we left that for another day. Enjoy! The First Part in our Coup d'etat Cinema Trilogy We put our love of procedurals to the test with the walkabout pace of an assassin in France in THE DAY OF THE JACKAL. While not the biggest fans of historical fiction we soon discover that even with that somewhat dry genre there is an even drier option when the English get involved. Listen to us talk around a classic as we secretly pine to be rewatching INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS again! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Third Part in our Identity Crisis Cinema Trilogy We discuss our agreed upon favorite film of 2023 in Celine Song's PAST LIVES with very little in the way of judgement. Possibly because that is befitting of the tone of the film but also because we can't help but gush about this modern classic that sits beside the likes of ALL THE HEAVEN ALLOWS and Edward Norton's KEEPING THE FAITH! Okay maybe the latter is just a guilty pleasure for the author of these show notes. No guilt in reveling in Greta Lee and Teo Yoo's performances though! Enjoy! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! Instead of deciding to partake in BEING JOHN MALKOVICH we play a little hot or not with the... fairly unattractive debut feature film from Spike Jonze in what would be the beginning of a series of lighthearted fare from the writer Charlie Kaufman. Cameron Diaz and pets! Catherine Keener as the bubbly coworker! John Cusack as a puppeteer! All disgusting! Enjoy. If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! As usual one host works in a comic book origin story for AMERICAN BEAUTY as part of a clever ruse to avoid talking about Kevin Spacey in one of his Oscar-winning performances. The other host talks about aging out of being Mena Suvari's peer to Annette Bening. There is some hope of personal growth in this episode! The First Part in our Identity Crisis Cinema Trilogy If ever we have an identity crisis we can only hope to handle it with as much charm as Audrey Hepburn or Cary Grant. Instead you get us. And that ONCE AGAIN involves us comparing ourselves once again to Paul Giamatti's character in SIDEWAYS. So... as far from Ms. Hepburn and Mr. Grant as you can get. Which is why this episode is on CHARADE! Because we all need a little more of Audrey and Cary and a little less... well, I won't say less Paul Giammati or SIDEWAYS. How about less show notes? Enjoy! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! In which the comparisons to AMERICAN PIE never end but at least it wasn't forced into a trilogy on Taye Diggs ALMOST ruining a wedding. That may have been us playing the part of Mr. Diggs by ruining two great slice-of-life comedies from the Best Movie Year Ever of 1999 in THE WOOD and THE BEST MAN. In the former we get a classic hang movie as three young men move onto adulthood and in the latter it's an ensemble of middle-aged friends looking for one last chance to reflect on their youth (for better but mostly worst) and we couldn't be more pleased to dive into that particular universe. Though the fact that ended on Peacock twenty-five years later isn't exactly what we had in mind for The Best Man Cinematic Universe. Enjoy! A special bonus episode for the latest funny book on film! In true DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE fashion are we pandering by featuring this latest MCU joint without a proper trilogy in theory? Or are we doing everyone a favor by NOT trying to force two other innocent bystander films in to a discussion on a silly superhero played by a very silly Ryan Reynolds in a "plot" that spends two hours making excuses for why Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine and why Deadpool still exists at all? Look... this is all silly. Including this very podcast. Turn your brain off and enjoy and we will resume proper film with our next episode on the classic CHARADE! The Third Part in our Mask of the Doctor Trilogy We finish our trilogy on masks of doctors (although that comes into question by the end of the episode) by starting with comparing our podcast to FRIENDS or SEINFELD and every other podcast is the 9:30 sitcom that everyone hate watched until ER started. In some regard THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is seen as maybe the misfire of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy... although that is not backed up financially or critically. It's just a vibe! And that's also the answer by the end of the episode in how this film stands alongside the works of Stanley Kubrick and Pedro Almodovar. Enjoy it! All of it! The First Part in our Mask of the Doctor Trilogy We couldn't let July end without a little Hallmark-like summer Christmas celebration by continuing our summer sexcapade! For this combination of highly specific events one most to go the master of the cinema. Kubrick. Cruise. Kidman. You know who isn't included in that list? Nolan! For that you must wait for the end of this month's trilogy BUT FOR NOW we amble about fake New York City with The Last Movie Star as he just can't stop running into sexual encounters in EYES WIDE SHUT. The greatest premise ever put to film. Enjoy! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Third Part in our Sex Pact Trilogy The only climax one could expect from our trilogy on a sex pact among friends would have to involve two former sitcom stars in Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis who are... SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE. But mainly we want them to sleep with each other (if not us, of course) in this lovely romcom from Leslye Headland. One host falls for the first time while the other perhaps has aged into a world where he can accept a platonic relationship with Ms. Brie and/or Mr. Sudeikis. But mainly Alison Brie. And then Amanda Peet enters the picture! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Second Part in our Sex Pact Trilogy Happy Fourth of July with one of your hosts stranger holiday traditions (we'll get to EYES WIDE SHUT every Christmas very soon) with the auteur Will Gluck's FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS. And while spending America's birthday with Jenna Elfman and Richard Jenkins doesn't sound particularly sexy (though delightful!) that's where the sex positivity of Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake come on. We debate whether this film subverts the romcom tropes it winks at enough or if it should apologize for those tropes at all! They shouldn't and we don't! Happy Independence Day and don't scare your dogs with fireworks. Just have sex! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The First Part in our Sex Pact Trilogy For our latest trilogy we make a sex pact. Not with each other but with three films on films where friends take "the next step" together. Unfortunately for our first entry in AMERICAN PIE it's the likes of Jason Biggs and Chris Klein awkwardly making these moves on the likes of the Alyson Hannigan and Mean Suvari. Thankfully all of them mostly come out unscathed as we remark on the strange sweetness of this perverted movie that was THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY for the blink-182 crowd. What we are saying is that in our 40s we are no better now than we were then. Especially when it comes to our fandom of Natasha Lyonne! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! Toni Collette should have won an Oscar for and Bruce Willis at his best in THE SIXTH SENSE! This is the episode where we do not trash a universally loved modern classic ("modern" so we don't feel so old on this film's twenty-fifth anniversary) HOWEVER... the show does open with a bit of some IT FOLLOWS rules lawyering. But then it's right back to the love fest for M. Night Shyamalan's biggest hit. No, it's not THE VILLAGE. We already played that hip card on a prior episode so please go download that after you listen. Enjoy! Enjoy and catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Third Part in our Driving with Death Trilogy Although David Lynch's THE STRAIGHT STORY didn't make the cut for our Book Club (shame on you Best Movie Year Ever!) but it's better than END OF DAYS (another strange omission from the book on 1999 in film) and so it gets to be included in a proper trilogy. On the definitive movie podcast on movie trilogies. That are not actually trilogies. Okay, we are going a bit off the rails here so how about a hot take? This is better Lynch than MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Enjoy! Or don't! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Second Part in our Driving with Death Trilogy They don't make them like they used to. Because every movie coming out now Is. Simply. Not. SPEED. From the auteur Jan de Bone we were introduced to the next great Hollywood star in Sandra Bullock (apologies to DEMOLITION MAN) and Keanu was anointed as The Next Great Action Star (though THE MATRIX and JOHN WICK would still be some years away.) And then there's Jeff Daniels as the boozing, cynical Obi-Wan Kenobi who knows everything about bombs and almost nothing about sober love-making. Even these show notes are making me want to watch SPEED again. As. Should. You. Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The First Part in our Driving with Death Trilogy We open with an attack on Star Wars and then quickly move to expressing annoyance at the auteur Nicolas Winding Refn's interview style. Populist and independent cinema... no one is safe with us! Much like the characters in William Friedkin's SORCERER. Just a bunch of dudes driving through the jungle with dynamite in the back of the truck and two brave podcasters airing their various grievances. Same same! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! The renaissance of Brendan Fraser as a beloved actor owes a lot to his crowd-pleasing adventures with Rachel Weisz in THE MUMMY; a movie better than it has any right to be and one that your hosts thought of themselves as too cool for upon initial release. Twenty-five years later they are recording a podcast on the not-so-hip mummy movie and it is clear that these two guys were never cooler than Mr. Fraser and Ms. Weisz. Spoilers! Tarintino's obsession with the 70s, why Blackberry may be the greatest watch of 2024, The Planet of the Apes Franchise, and The Beast.
This week on “Trambles,” Tim dives into the world of pulp film classics, inspired by Quentin Tarantino's “Cinema Speculation.” Watching nine hours of the Joe Rogan Experience. In addition, he explores the fascinating junk wax era of baseball cards and its impact on collectors and the sports memorabilia market.
The Third Part in our Liam Neeson is a Short-Term Mentor When a podcast host programs a Batman movie for a his co-host who usually shows up to record in a Batman t-shirt he expects a little more respect shown to BATMAN BEGINS! Alas, this is an episode in which one man's hatred of Christopher Nolan is put to the test when combined with his love of The Dark Knight... but not that movie because we needed to complete our trilogy on Liam Neeson mentoring young people to fairly bad results. The First Part in our Liam Neeson is a Short-Term Mentor Trilogy How did one podcaster spend his May the Fourth? By running out on his sleeping family for a late night twenty-fifth anniversary screening of the George Lucas opus STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE. He then spent a week questioning his commitment to cinema and this podcast and pondering this question: if this podcast sticks around for two decades will people come around to our way of thinking or do we need to be bought out by Disney first to gain that wistful afterglow? We will probably be dead by then. Enjoy! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! The delightful ensemble of Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell and who else? I'm forgetting someone. Oh, that's right! Justin Long also stars in GALAXY QUEST which graces the pages of our Movie Book Club in this chapter from the book BEST. MOVIE. YEAR. EVER. by Brian Raftery!. The Third Part in our Pressure of the Pedestal Trilogy In which Sofia Coppola's nepo baby status is questioned by one host and the other can't get over Josh Hartnett's hair. The Second Part in our Pressure of the Pedestal Trilogy We Pick Flick for the second part in this month's trilogy with Reese Witherspoon in a star-making performance (sorry, she was merely the fuddy-duddy in CRUEL INTENTIONS) in Alexander Payne's ELECTION. Competing with the likes of a young Chris Klein at the height of his himbo powers we discuss how this look at high school politics ages somewhat gracefully into middle age. The Third Part in our Dealing with the Devil in 1997 Trilogy One host talks about what a GREAT ASS Connie Neilsen has and how Keanu Reeves has his head... ALL THE WAY UP IT. Or something to that effect. The other host presents a childhood memory of walking in on his parents watching THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE and we wrap up our dealings with the underworld by debating the merits of bringing about the antichrist or being forced to watch SPAWN again. It's not a tough choice. Enjoy! Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! The Second Part in our Dealing with the Devil in 1997 Trilogy Dr. Alan Grant is at it again and THIS TIME IN SPACE as continue dealing with the devil of 1997 with the release of EVENT HORIZON. For one host this a pleasant first time watch of unpleasantness while the other host remembers fondly the teenage musing in a Hot Topic on the sick cruelty that Morpheus is exposed to while simply doing his job. Also the audio commentary informed us that the producers found Joely Richardson very hot. So maybe this podcast isn't such a waste of your EVENT HORIZON audio time after all. Enjoy! The First Part in our Dealing with the Devil in 1997 Trilogy So it's come to this. We (and perhaps you, dear listener) needed a reprieve from the year of cinema in 1999 and we find ourselves a mere two years prior... watching and discussing SPAWN? Blame the need for superhero silliness after the serious business of VARSITY BLUES for our current plight of watching lifeless action, in your face "politically incorrect" humor from John Leguizamo as a cross between Salacious Crumb and Jabba the Hutt and Martin Sheen right before the life jacket that was to be playing President Bartlett. There is no life jacket for us for this is our episode on SPAWN. Enjoy and catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999! Just two guys attempting to relitigate the 2002 AFC Championship game and relive the moment Ali Larter walked out in a whipped cream bikini and Dawson was never the same. Neither was America as another "cult classic" box office hit in VARSITY BLUES graces the pages of our Movie Book Club in this chapter from the book BEST. MOVIE. YEAR. EVER. by Brian Raftery!. The Third Part in our Taming of the 1999 Shrew Trilogy One host finds Julia Stiles AND Heath Ledger insufferable while the other is more bothered by the supposed nice guy act of Joseph-Gordon Levitt. Which is to say that maybe middle aged men should not sit in judgement of the charms of teen romcom hits from their youth. They do however really dislike labeling 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU a "cult classic." On that we and the fanbase for this film can agree. And also Allison Janney. Always Allison Janney. Especially playing an erotica writing guidance counselor named Ms. Perky. Movies are the best. Enjoy! The Second Part in our Taming of the 1999 Shrew Trilogy One man faces down forty by watching CRUEL INTENTIONS for the first time. Then he moved on to the audio commentary track (which required finding a used DVD) AND THEN this man moved on to CRUEL INTENTIONS 2. Which was just a series of unaired television episodes continuing this porny universe starring a young Amy Adams. Still not satisfied he moves to a actual porn with a terribly titled adult film parody of this Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon classic. Research was done. The other host just keeps bringing up Selma Blair in HELLBOY. Enjoy! Did we mention that you can get more of this in our Movie Book Club episodes on Patreon for BEST MOVIE YEAR EVER? The First Part in our Taming of the 1999 Shrew Trilogy One host compares this early 1999 hit for the young adult crowd to the works of George Bernard Shaw and Spike Lee. Specifically Usher's appearance as the high school prom DJ as a callback to Samuel L. Jackson's work in DO THE RIGHT THING. It is at this point that I remind you that he has a very disagreeable cohost. Enjoy, if you can!
