Many frustrated by the perceived lack of understanding of our nation's maritime heritage requirements want new leaders with fresh ideas, unburdened by legacy entanglements. It is hoped that a younger cohort with military experience, preferably naval, in the House of Representatives and the Senate who bring to the job an additional background in business and industry will emerge to promote constructive change.Today's guest fits the bill perfectly: the new Senator from Montana, Senator Tim Sheehy.Tim Sheehy is a father, husband, combat veteran, patriot, and an entrepreneur. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy class of 2008 with a B.S. in History, Tim completed several deployments and hundreds of missions as a US Navy SEAL Officer and Team Leader, deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, and the Pacific region. Additionally, Tim completed a joint tour with Army Special Operations forces where he was privileged to complete US Army Ranger School and serve alongside the 5th Special Forces Group, 75th Ranger Regiment and other units within US Army Special Operations Command.Tim completed his active duty service as a mini submarine pilot and navigator specializing in sensitive undersea operations. After his active duty service, Tim fulfilled reserve duty as a recruiter and assessor for future naval officers. Tim was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserve in 2019.In 2014, Tim founded Belgrade-based Bridger Aerospace with all of his savings and an all-veteran team. Under his leadership, Bridger Aerospace and its sister company, Ascent Vision Technologies experienced rapid growth and created hundreds of Montana jobs. Ascent Vision Technologies was acquired by CACI in 2020, and Bridger Aerospace went public on the NASDAQ in 2023.Tim sits on the Senate Armed Services, Veterans' Affairs, and Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.SummaryIn this conversation, Senator Tim Sheehy discusses his journey from Naval Academy graduate to U.S. Senator, emphasizing the need for a new generation of leaders in the maritime domain. In this episode, we discuss the U.S. mid-cap landscape with Jeff Mo, manager of the U.S. mid cap equity strategy at Mawer. Jeff touches on risk management, emphasizing disciplined adherence to investment philosophy and the benefits of balancing risk and return through natural contradictions, like pairing discretionary consumer-focused SharkNinja with countercyclical firms such as FTI Consulting. Additional topics include preemptive risk management, maintaining an all-weather portfolio, and leveraging a robust inventory process to adapt. Key Takeaways: In a hot market, risk management means resisting the temptation to chase speculative trends or high-growth fads without competitive advantages. Instead, it requires disciplined adherence to an investment philosophy—prioritizing quality businesses with strong fundamentals and sustainable value. Purposeful diversification includes inherent contradictions, ensuring steady wealth creation across interest rate cycles by balancing companies benefiting from both low- and high-rate environments. Despite recent market volatility and election-related uncertainties, the focus remains on maintaining an all-weather strategy. The team continues to evaluate companies based on fundamentals and earnings, with no drastic portfolio adjustments needed during this time. Inventory is crucial for risk management, providing a range of high-quality, pre-analyzed options. Mawer's extensive, multi-stage inventory process ensures quick access to companies with competitive advantages, allowing for strategic, timely decisions based on evolving market conditions. To illustrate natural contradiction, Jeff shares details on specific holdings. SharkNinja's competitive edge lies in its rapid product development, allowing market share growth despite its consumer discretionary risks. To balance, the portfolio includes companies like FTI Consulting and CACI, which thrive in different market conditions, providing stability through natural contradictions. This week on CounterSpin: It wasn't the horrific abuse of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison, but rather, the pictures of it that forced public and official acknowledgment. The Defense Department vehemently resisted the pictures' release, with good reason. Yet when, after the initial round, Australian TV put out new images, Washington Post executive editor Len Downie said they were “so shocking and in such bad taste, especially the extensive nudity, that they are not publishable in our newspaper.” The notion that acts of torture by the U.S. military and its privately contracted cat's paws are, above all, distasteful may help explain corporate media's inattentiveness to the efforts of victims of Abu Ghraib to find some measure of justice. But a federal jury has just found defense contractor CACI responsible for its part in that abuse, in a ruling being called “exceptional in every sense of the term.” The Center for Constitutional Rights has been behind the case, Al Shimari v. CACI, through its long roller coaster ride through the courts — which isn't over yet. We hear about it from CCR senior staff attorney Katherine Gallagher. Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look at recent press coverage of the ICC's Israel warrants.   The post Katherine Gallagher on Abu Ghraib Verdict appeared first on KPFA.

This week on CounterSpin: The long-fought effort to get legal acknowledgement of the abuses of Iraqi detainees during the Iraq War is coming to a federal court in Virginia, with Al-Shimari v. CACI. Since the case was first filed in 2008, military contractor CACI has pushed some 20 times to have it dismissed. We got a reading on the case last year from Baher Azmy, legal director at the Center for Constitutional Rights. Historians tell us that the Cold War is over, but the framing persists in news media that love a simple good guy versus bad guy story. Telling history through actual human beings makes it harder to come up with slam-dunk answers but can raise questions that are ultimately more useful for those seeking a peaceful planet. A new book provides a case study; it tells the story of Ted Hall who, as a young man, shared nuclear secrets from Los Alamos with the then–Soviet Union. Veteran investigative journalist Dave Lindorff has reported for numerous outlets and is author of Marketplace Medicine and This Can't Be Happening, among other titles. Whether it's through contributions to veteran organizations or advocating for better services, let's show our gratitude by actively making a difference. 2️⃣ Educate and empower: Start at a young age by providing educational opportunities that focus on leadership and history. By creating programs, awards, and scholarships, we can help shape the future generation with bravery, character, and a sense of duty. 3️⃣ Recognize and address mental health: The alarming suicide rate among veterans and active duty personnel demands our attention. CFO Thought Leader

CFO Thought Leader

The big-city addresses that frequently prettify the office locations of esteemed accounting houses have continued to be a reliable draw for 20-something-year-old accounting grads eager to be counted among urban professionals.      Thus we would not have been surprised to learn that back in the late 1980s, when recent grad Jim Caci was assigned to Arthur Andersen's Roseland, New Jersey, office, he experienced what might have been called a “ho-hum” moment. Not so! Unlike the real estate occupied by his big-city peers, Caci notes, “Roseland” afforded him more access to Andersen partners, who were arguably more approachable outside the accounting house's big-city confines. What's more, the New Jersey site tended to operate in a more independent fashion than AA's marquee offices, a cultural attribute that perhaps made it an ideal location from which to spearhead a pilot program to provide a unique menu of services to small technology companies. “The idea was that from among these small companies would ultimately come the next Microsoft, but we would have already begun working with them when they were at only $5 million in revenue,” explains Caci, who reports that Roseland became one of only a handful of AA offices to test the program.   At the same time, the Roseland office had some plus-size neighbors, including AT&T Corp., whose headquarters at the time were a mere 25-minute drive away in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Caci tells us that this is when his career benefited from both geography and timing. At the time, Arthur Andersen had been engaged by AT&T to help with the formidable task of splitting up the firm into its Baby Bell operating companies, per its historic agreement with the U.S. government. The multi-step nature of this undertaking and regular management updates that it demanded led Caci and other Roseland denizens to frequently commute to Basking Ridge. Says Caci: “Here I was at the beginning of my second year out of school, and I was being asked to help present to the senior leadership of AT&T.” –Jack Sweeney
