I'm stoked and honoured to interview my friend and formative musical hero, Archer David Birch of Squeal. Born in the UK and cutting his teeth in punk bands like The Vibrators, he gleaned deep songwriting and production knowledge from the likes of Trevor Horn before emigrating to South Africa. There, he formed beloved hard rock trio Squeal. One of Durban's and SA's best ever bands, Squeal played heavy rock in a tasteful, intelligent way no one else could touch. Tight as a very tight thing, they were always on point live and Dave's fascinating background in the UK informed their songwriting and approach.Squeal went on to dominate the country's live scene and airwaves with epic, heartfelt songwriting, angular guitar riffs and sophisticated arrangements showcasing Dave's mastery of tension and release. As Squeal quietened down in the early 2000s, Dave focused on the iconic Tropical Sweat Studios, which became a national recording destination and provided a place for emerging bands to commit their art to tape in the best-sounding way possible.Nowadays Dave is focused on soundtrack production and scoring, although he still records bands when the chance arises. Please, do enjoy my chat with the one and only Dave Birch. According to a recent survey by Deloitte, nearly two-thirds of respondents said that global digital identity will be very important in the future despite the fact that digital IDs are still largely underused in the world today. Newer digital identity verification methods, like biometrics, could provide far superior authentication protocols and offer customers more seamless experiences while protecting against fraudsters. Digital IDs could also greatly enhance the gig economy, where the identity of remote workers is paramount to the protection of valuable corporate and consumer assets. While passwords are currently king, the development of universal digital recognition solutions that are both seamless and secure will eventually be the norm. Open Banking & Identity: In the 25th-anniversary episode of PayTechTalk, I had the great honor to talk to none other than the world-famous author, advisor, and commentator on digital financial services, Mr. Dave Birch. Open Banking – will it do harm or further competition? Dave gave us interesting insights into his experiences with open banking and why the asymmetric playing field that it creates may harm rather than further competition. Will GAFA & BAT take over the world or will open banking give hope to the rest of us to catch up with the BigTechs? Identity is the new money! Dave has not only written a mind-blowing book with this title, he is an absolute genius when it comes to identity. We briefly discussed the 2FA approach of the PSD2 respectively the EBA and found that the framework is far from providing a 2FA solution that would satisfy the interests of the market. As there is no standard approach, we discussed as to whether merchants are forced to ignore the 2FA obligation and simply take the risk (is there any significant risk that modern technologies cannot reduce to a minimum?)? Is this legally possible, if so, how? Could new technologies improve the identification and authentication experience and still provide top of the notch security? Dave Birch wouldn’t be Dave Birch if he didn’t have answers to these questions. He gave us profound insights on what the new technologies are capable of and how the identification and authentication process of the future could look like. Enough intro! Please sit back relax and enjoy our anniversary episode of PayTechTalk.

Today we welcome Bailey Reutzel to Liberty Entrepreneurs. Bailey was one of the first financial reporter to cover bitcoin, before banks would even acknowledge its existence. She just finished a six month, 48 state road trip and wrote an article about each state's financial and economic culture. To get an idea of what Bailey wanted to accomplish during MoneyTripping, her road trip, check out the Atlantic article featuring her below: http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/09/financial-alternatives-post-recession-living/404995/ You can connect with Bailey at: Her Blog: http://moneytripping.com/ - over 50 blog posts from her road trip Twitter @BLR13 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bailey.reutzel As a reporter for American Banker and Payment Source, Bailey broke some big early stories, and was one of the lone voices reporting on bitcoin to the banking sector. Bitcoin has mostly been seen as a consumer application, so Bailey reporting for a trade publication is quite unique. You can find an archive of her reporting here: http://www.americanbanker.com/authors/bailey-reutzel-1627.html She currently writes freelance for Coindesk frequently – you can find her recent work here: http://www.coindesk.com/author/baileyreutzel/ Favorite Quotes from the podcast: On Bitcoin versus private permissioned ledgers: “I think a lot of these private permissioned blockchains, it is still yet to been if they can pull this off. Because everything is in pilot or proof of concept phases, and so the bitcoin community has an angle there to say were the only ones up and running, and we've been up and running since 2008.” On covering early Bitcoin companies: “And a bunch of companies that I covered that covered back in the day are no longer around, and it's not necessarily because they were bad companies, it was because they were too soon, they were before regulation, and once regulation hit, it was like 'Oh shit, what do we do now?'” After making a name for herself in the bitcoin payment reporting space, Bailey moved to London. There she met a group of anarchist squatters in London – who further motivated her to go out and do her own thing. She met guys like Brett Scott http://skepchick.org/2014/03/bitcoin-101-with-brett-scott/ and Dave Birch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccTA2J1QcBM. Amongst the London squatters: “There was a huge group also talking about the history of money, predominantly because bitcoin is a thing. Let's go back, why is bitcoin a thing now? Does that say anything about money's past, or money's future? That was the initial underlying of MoneyTripping, the road trip.” An intense road trip - three days per state: “As the road trip went on, it just became more and more of a vacation. Where I am just going to do whatever I want. And I think that actually turned into better work. To financially make MoneyTripping happen, Bailey saved up some money, and did some freelance journalism on the side. She also earned $1500 in tips, mostly through Paypal, but some bitcoin tips. She started MoneyTripping with $8,000, and in all spent about $12k, living frugally. Half of the spending was on gas. To cap off the trip, she drove back into Missouri with $300 in her account. Could iy have something to do with the Bystander Effect? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect On limits to living where she wants to in the world: On a freelance budget, there's no way they would give me a visa. There is a systematic bias towards employment in the modern immigration system. Favorite Quotes from the Podcast: On Bailey's view of the US economy after driving through every state: “There's a huge contingent of young people in this country right now: the job market is shit, unemployment is high, and so what do you do? You become an entrepreneur.” The best way to create your lifestyle of freedom and flexibility is to get into the entrepreneurial mindset. Keep. Building. Freedom.

Having done a few Alternative Finance shows recently it's important to recall that there is another hardcore Fintech sector that is already changing the world (as opposed to threatening to in the future). This is payments. One quarter of the Fintech50 are payments companies and when I looked a little while ago there were well over a thousand on Angelslist. So we definitely need a super sherpa to guide us through this landscape. Consult Hyperion are an independent technical and strategic consultancy that specialises in secure electronic transactions. For two decades they have been working with technologies ranging from smart cards and mobile phones to contactless tickets and electronic ID in mass-market systems that include global payments, national and regional ticketing, international settlement, national identity and corporate  services. So I think they might know a bit :-) Dave – besides being a member of the Amalgamated Union of Wheeltappers, Shunters and Podcasters was a founding director of the Consult Hyperion, is now their global ambassador and has decades of experience under his belt. A very rich show with plenty about what is really going on with payments - especially from the strategic big picture perspective which certainly helps put the semi-infinite number of payments startups into some kind of context. Topics discussed include: - what a global ambassador actually does as a day job :-) - the consistency of the three complaints about the payments sector (too slow, too expensive and too opaque) in recent decades  and which of these are driving innovation right now - the technological changes enabling and driving Fintech payments progress right now - the importance of regulation in driving change in payments with regulators consistently driving payments away from banks over recent years; the recent EU moves around debit and credit interchange fees (and what they actually are :-D) - the extra valued-added from new payments players - deep-dive discussions on what Dave sees as the five key trends in Fintech payments right now: ....In-app payments ...."Re-localisation" (and the two meanings of this) ....Privacy ....Blockchain ....Internet of things - the trends Consult Hyperion are seeing in the business coming their way at the moment as a weather vane of what is hot in payments - and much much more :-) A very rich and enlightening conversation about the tectonic change in this industry sector!
