Deceptive Deepfake Cyber Scheme: Arup’s Wake-Up Call Against North Korean IT Workers

The Daily Decrypt - Cyber News and Discussions

In today's episode, a UK engineering firm Arup was scammed of £20m through a deepfake incident where an employee fell victim to AI-generated video calls. The incident sheds light on the increasing sophistication of cyber attackers and the need for better awareness on deepfake technology. Meanwhile, the Jumio 2024 Online Identity Study reveals consumer concerns over deepfakes, with a call for more governmental regulation of AI to combat cybercrime. The US Justice Department exposed a scheme enabling North Korean IT workers to bypass sanctions, highlighting the risks associated with remote work and the importance of identifying potential threats. Original URLs: 1. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/may/17/uk-engineering-arup-deepfake-scam-hong-kong-ai-video.2. https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2024/05/20/consumers-online-identity-fraud/.3. https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2024/05/17/north-korean-it-workers/ Arup, Engineering, Deepfake, Cyberattacks, deepfakes, generative AI, digital security, identity fraud Search Phrases: Arup deepfake cyber-attacks How to protect companies from deepfake scams Consumer awareness about deepfakes and generative AI Collaborating to enhance digital security measures Preventing identity fraud with advanced technology North Korean IT workers evasion scheme Sanctions evasion by North Korean IT workers Identifying and protecting organizations from North Korean IT workers Deceptive employment schemes by North Korean workers US companies and North Korean IT worker sanctions May21 The us justice department has uncovered a scheme involving north Korean. It workers evading sanctions by working remotely for us companies under assumed identities, which has resulted in millions of dollars generated for the DPRK. What signs can help companies identify north Korean it workers posing as us freelancers. Consumers consistently overestimate their ability to spot deep, fake videos with 60% believing they could detect one. Despite rising concerns over the risks posed by generative AI. How can businesses and consumers collaborate to enhance digital security measures and prevent identity fraud in the face of increasing deep fake technology. And in that same realm Arup, which is a leading UK engineering firm. Fell prey to a 20 million euro, deep fake scam where AI generated video calls, duped a Hong Kong employee into transferring vast sums to criminals. How can businesses protect themselves from sophisticated schemes? Involving deep fake videos. You're listening to the daily decrypt. The us justice department has uncovered a scheme. Where individuals from North Korea. Are posing as us freelancers and getting jobs at us companies under these false identities. These individuals will utilize us payment platforms, online job sites and proxy computers within the U S to deceive. The United States employers. They particularly target fortune 500 companies. Like major television networks. Silicon valley tech firms. And they've even attempted infiltration of us government agencies. So these individuals have been aided by. A few different us citizens. Including one that would create accounts on us job sites and then sell them to north Koreans. Or another us woman who operated a quote laptop farm, where she essentially just had a bunch of laptops and let. Adversaries remote in looking like they were in the United States. This scheme ran from 2020 all the way to 2023. And amassed over $6.8 million for North Korea. But. Officially both of the individuals who are responsible for all of these fake employments have been apprehended. And are awaiting extradition to the United States for their trial. So, obviously this is going to be pretty tough to spot. Because first of all, resumes for these fraudulent. Applicants are going to look really good. So they're probably going to get the interview based on their resume and their cover letter. But there are a few tactics you can use to help identify these fraudulent applicants and the FBI released a multiple page document with these recommendations. Like dozens of pages, but. You can look for inconsistencies in their profiles, like name, spelling, nationality, work, location, contact information, education, et cetera. Look for typos. Look at portfolio websites. Social media profiles. Developer profiles, like the ones on get hub. Or their inability to conduct this interview during regular business hours. Would mean that they're on the other side of the world, which isn't a deterrent. I mean, Us companies are expanding across the world, but. Keep an eye on your new applicants, on your new hires as well. You don't necessarily have to spot this before hiring them, but hopefully there's a period where they don't have. Full access to company resources, perhaps while they're onboarding. And be extra stringent to work with their onboarding manager to see making sure they're in all the sessions, their cameras on. But there are a real person. Because these individuals. We're working at hundreds of companies, they didn't actually have the time to do any tasks or any work. So just make sure your standards are high. And you should be able to spot them. If you'd like to read the entire document from the FBI, it'll be linked in the show notes below. All right. Our third story is going to discuss a recent scan that was conducted and successfully executed using deep fake AI videos. But first the Julio. So 2024 online identity study. Which encompassed over 8,000 adult consumers across the UK, us, Singapore, and Mexico. Highlights that consumers tend to drastically overestimate their ability to detect deep fakes. With 60% believing they could identify them. Which is up from 52% in 2023. And that's interesting because deep fake technology has only improved. And we think that we are better at identifying them, given this improvement in technology. So in fact we're actually worse.. Because major companies continued to be scammed successfully. By these deep fake AI videos. And if you're listening and you happen to be one of those people out there who thinks they can identify. AI content. That's just a dangerous mindset to have false confidence. Sure you can identify some of that content, but always operate. Under the assumption that you can't, which is the same for like identifying malicious URLs. Just don't trust your ability and you'll be safe. If as soon as you start to trust that you'll identify things, you're going to make a mistake and you're going to miss. Something pretty obvious. Now I agree that we as individuals shouldn't be responsible for identifying AI content. And there is a continued push for more regulations and stamping of AI content across the internet. Or any sort of identifier. Or tool that can accurately identify AI content. But as of right now, It's pretty much the wild, wild west. We can cross our fingers and hope that something's coming down the pipeline for us. But right now we've got to be extra vigilant. And if something smells weird or looks kind of weird or. The cadence of someone's voice is off or their hands are moving in very predictable ways. Go ahead and assume that it's an AI. And proceed as such. So what can you do if you enter into a call with a fake version of your boss or. A fake it manager for your company or a fake parent. Start asking questions that only they would know the answer to. If they're on video, ask them to move their camera around, ask them to stand up, sit down. Don't be hesitant to tell them why you're asking them to do this, because this is a serious thing that any CEO or any boss should be tracking. But yeah, you might have to get creative with your methods of verifying that they're actually a human. And on the same note, this next story is about someone who thought they could identify deep, fake. AI videos or callers. And instead. Was convinced to transfer 20 million euros. To a fraudulent actor. So Arup, which is a prominent British engineering company. Fell victim to a deep, fake scam where an employee was deceived into transferring 20 million euros to criminals through an AI generated video call in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong police are currently investigating this incident. And the case is classified as quote, obtaining property by deception. So there's not much else to go into about this story. But these types of calls can have dire consequences, right. They tend to just be either zoom calls. Or maybe your CEO gives you a call on the phone and their voice is. Duplicated. Or they hop on a zoom video call and. It's actually an AI person that you're talking to. With the likeness of your CEO. And so I personally have never had a face-to-face contact with my CEO. So I wouldn't necessarily know if some facial feature was wrong. Or if their eyes were too open or closed or their hairline was different, but you gotta be looking at. The mannerisms. The smoothness of the speech, watch their mouth. See if it looks weird and that, that can be tough because bandwidth issues, especially crossing over. Oceans. Can help mask those types of things. But like I said, you're going to have to get creative and verifying, and it's going to be hard to ask your CEO to move their camera around, but they will probably be very impressed. If you say, Hey, AI video calls are on the rise. Can you help me in verifying that you're my actual CEO. This has been the Daily Decrypt. Simon Winchester is the Vice President of Advanced Technologies at Jumio Corporation. His responsibilities entail building the go-to-market strategies for newly acquired technologies within Jumio and then driving the adoption on a global scale. One of the company's most recent additions is its AML (anti-money laundering) solutions. Tom Fox welcomes him to this week's show to talk about current world events and the company's AML solution.  Money Laundering in 2022 Tom asks Simon if money laundering schemes have become more ubiquitous since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Simon replies that the recent events certainly had an impact. He says that money laundering is “criminals taking illicitly-gained funds and then turning them into legitimate cash or assets which are ideally free of suspicion.” At the core of this criminal process are three themes: placement, layering, and integration. Due to the digital environment we live in today, more people from all demographics are comfortable with digital banking, and criminals now find it easier to launder money, which makes it more difficult to detect. Fortunately, Jumio works hard to provide AML solutions and offer more effective compliance programs.  Key AML Regulations Tom asks Simon what are some of the key AML regulations that Jumio advises clients on. It mostly depends on where your organization is located in the world, as local enforcement bodies drive AML regulations, Simon responds. These regulations will take a cue from international standards set by the Financial Action Task Force, which functions as a “global AML watchdog”. In the UK, the EU AML directives shape policy and provide guidance. Recently, they brought a new directive into effect which “increased the frequency of regulatory updates to the KYC and AML legislation, and brought a strict obligation to industries that were not previously subjected to severe AML protocol,” Simon tells Tom.  Playing Catch-Up With Money Launderers Tom asks Simon what Jumio sees as the key components of a successful AML program. Ideally, a company providing AML solutions should have a well-defined plan, Simon says. However, that is not feasible given the current climate. The components of a successful AML program, Simon says, include three steps:  A dedicated compliance officer who is tasked with creating, monitoring and reviewing the compliance program, and staff training.  A written risk-based compliance program with comprehensive AML policies and procedures that are documented. This approach identifies and protects your business from financial crime and includes having the technology in place to support that framework.  An appropriate customer due diligence process, which means vetting your clients to avoid financial crimes.  The Role of a CCO in AML Solutions Simon believes that “Chief Compliance Officers are the catalyst for the growth and innovation”. He acknowledges how CCOs often get the raw end of the deal and their role in the organization must be scrutinized and changed. With the right AML technologies, compliance team, and effective AML program, a CCO and their team can drive shareholder value through organizational growth.  Resources Simon Winchester | LinkedIn  Jumio Corporate | Website | LinkedIn | Twitter

Europe has been paving the way for digital IDs with the eIDAS legislation, and the U.S. is next in line. Apple is rolling out a feature that will enable U.S. residents to upload their government-issued ID to their Wallet app, while some states like Mississippi and Florida have already launched or are working on launching their own digitized driver's license program for residents. While digital ID solutions do offer a more convenient alternative to physical IDs, the high sensitivity of these documents means this approach will come with many potential security and privacy implications that governments must be prepared to face. Jumio has verified more than 500 million identities issued by over 200 countries and territories from real-time web and mobile transactions. Jumio's solutions are used by leading companies in the financial services, sharing economy, digital currency, retail, travel, and online gaming sectors. Bala Kumar, Chief Product Officer at Jumio Corporation, discusses what we currently know about digital driver's licenses and what governments should consider to safeguard their residents' identities. Bala can also discuss the privacy challenges that may arise with a digital ID system and best practices for ensuring the system is truly secure.

By revolutionizing computer fabric, digital payments, and identities, Hypernet will make increased access to Web 3.0 to both new and experienced users. For corporate customers, you can have identity and compliance requirements via Hypernet's Web 3, blockchain-based resolution for decentralized applications (dApps), NFTs, and a multitude of business dealing with today's complex regulatory demands. Hypernet.ID creates a frictionless and auditable instrumentation for certifying and identifying customers on-chain. Hypernet.ID handles all of the required Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering demands with multiple facets. For customer identification: Government issued identity document verification and authentication Facial recognition and matching to the identity document presented by the users Address extraction IP address recognition Regarding Customer Due Diligence: Sanction checks Politically exposed persons checks Adverse media and social media scans And for Ongoing Monitoring: Daily customer screening The Hypernet.ID NFT is burned if a user no longer passes checks Hypernet.ID substantiates government issued IDs in more than 230 nations and uses biometric-based identity confirmations and liveness checks to match the individual to the ID. Once the individual is identified, the potential user is screened in real-time against thousands of global sanctions lists. Once the checks are complete, an on-chain, non-transferrable NFT is minted to their crypto wallet. Hypernet.ID is GDPR and CCPA compliant. Hypernet mints everyone's Hypernet.ID NFT directly to their wallet on the blockchain. The NFT can then be used instantly by the smart contracts of your dApp or website. Integration efforts for your customer verification are now made easier. Include your tailored Hypernet.ID link in your dApp or website. Users are then directed to Hypernet.ID's identity confirmation and AML checks. Upon completion, they will be redirected back to your app or site. With new users, this takes minutes to complete. For users who are returning, this takes seconds to execute. For developers, the smart contracts of your dApp access the publicly available, non-transferrable NFT of the user and interact with their account, serving to guarantee that any transfer of value obeys the applicable regulations. Customer's identities that are submitted are used by Jumio to verify their identity. Details are checked and – if verified – only the company requesting the verification will receive their ID information. The user can burn their NFT at anytime. Shawnna Sumaoang: Hi, and welcome to the Sales Enablement PRO podcast. I am Shawnna Sumaoang. Sales enablement is a constantly evolving space and we’re here to help professionals stay up to date on the latest trends and best practices so that they can be more effective in their jobs. Today, I’m excited to have Nia Barnabie join us. Nia, I would love for you to introduce yourself, your role, and your background to our audience. NB: Hi, my name Nia Barnabie. I have been working within the revenue operations space for the last 12 years. My background has been working with scaling corporate businesses within the SaaS tech space. Having worked at companies like Amazon, Hootsuite, and Jumio, I’ve worked in spaces where we’ve either seen a great deal of growth within a company, or we’re looking to try and find ways to achieve and build upon that. SS: Well, thank you so much for joining us. As you mentioned, you have really been in roles that are responsible for growing and scaling the business. I know that you have experience as a revenue operations leader, and you have experience within sales enablement. From your perspective, what does that intersection look like between sales enablement and revenue operations? How do those two types of roles complement each other? NB: If I think about revenue operations as a strategic function that is aligned and supporting the different departments within the commercial org – so you’ve got your marketing, your sales, and your customer success teams – revenue operations can provide the operational infrastructure and that can help them to keep very clear and focused and deliverables. Then the rev ops team have very clear roles and very defined departments. You may have one that’s focused on the strategy and the analysis, another on the systems, and then lastly, you would have your sales enablement. I like to think of enablement in many ways as becoming the connective tissue that helps companies leverage the strategies with the sellers or the individuals to create clear deliverables, OKRs, or KPIs. Driving revenue in this way helps create clear focus. When you asked me, how do they complement each other? I always start with the data. The revenue teams begin with the data. We think about how we make decisions based on what we have in front of us and if all the metrics and all the data-driven questions are being held in one space, we can ensure that the betterment of the strategy is coming from the right place, so partnering with the marketing, the CS, and the sales team or leadership team. Generally, we like to answer the questions of what is possible and how can we make what you want possible? Then we can start to think about what is the plan that we need to build around that and work with the different departments and align with them to create that. SS: One of the things that I noticed is that in an interview that you had done, you mentioned the important role that revenue ops plays in ensuring departments can work cohesively with each other. You alluded to that in your answer just a moment ago as well. From your perspective, what are some best practices for collaborating with partners from across the organization to improve alignment on your initiatives? NB: I like to think of rev ops as there to provide answers. We take the questions from the different departments and we use this to understand what the right data points are that are needed. In this way, you can instinctively become a business partner to different departments. Historically, you’ll find that different departments are responsible and own specific metrics or processes. In this way, they can start to work in isolation. My best practices would include, firstly, understanding what those questions are, making sure you’ve got the right data points and metrics, having collaborative meetings and QBRs, making sure that you have the stakeholders from the different parts of the business available and a part of that, clearly defining what your metrics are so that you can actually focus on building a narrative around that. Generally, just being more customer centric. If you’re able to do some of those things, then when you’re bringing on other elements like new technologies, you can really make sure that those other elements are in the middle of that. The data is in the middle of that, so that you’re making sure you’re able to optimize for the actual questions that those departments are really trying to solve. SS: Now, I imagine that there are some challenges that you’ve experienced in building and maintaining this alignment with partners. What do you recommend for ways to overcome some of those challenges? NB: Yeah, for sure. I think one of the challenges is having them understand how to work with us, and really, we are there to help align and collaborate with you guys. Where there are issues is around who is owner, who is owning the metrics, who is owning the process. When we are clear on who that is and what relationship needs to be between the two, it really does help massage away some of those problems. There can sometimes be a resistance to change. When you’re able to provide collaboration and support, you strip away all of the other elements and you really start to have a clear focus and be able to prioritize what it is you’re trying to do. Challenges often come from not having a clear focus or a clear vision and a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the people involved. SS: Yes, I have found that communication and clear roles and responsibilities are critical to ensuring alignment. You also touched on something just a moment ago around the help that alignment provides when it comes to rolling things out to the field. One area where we’ve seen sales enablement and revenue operations often overlap is when it comes to rolling out new technology or tools. What are some of your best practices for driving adoption among the field and how do you partner with enablement to do this effectively? NB: When you’re looking at a new tool or new tech stack, at least with the teams I work with, I like to include them within all of our performance reviews and all of our forecast calls, making them very aware of our strategic focus. That way, when it comes to purchasing new tools, they’re very aware of the processes that we’ve got in play. Ultimately what you’re looking to do is purchase tools to help drive revenue and to do that, we need adoption from the users. Normally, you’ll find that the sales enablement team are extremely close to the users and to the processes on a day-to-day basis. By including them from the beginning in that process, you get all the additional information and additional expertise that comes from them from the get-go. They can ask the questions to the product and really understand what the goals and the requirements are, and then build a project and build a solution based on that. Any adoption requires clear goals and clear requirements. You need to be able to build a project plan around that. For example, if we were going to re-introduce Salesforce to an environment, you’d first want to know what the pain points of that customer were, find a champion user, make sure that you’ve got a clear and good understanding of what the users on a day-to-day basis are doing, what are their processes, and build to alleviate as many of the problems that they usually see. An overlap with enablement helps keep that clear focus top of mind. You often find sometimes that companies can purchase tools to patch up processes or data inconsistencies. To avoid that, I feel that enablement is a key piece of making some really great improvements. SS: Absolutely. Given your revenue operations background, what are some of your best practices for gathering insights into what’s working and what’s not as it relates to sales performance? How do you use those insights to help improve the enablement programs? NB: Yeah, I’m going to sound like a broken record, but clean data. I always feel that clean data is where you start from and a clear understanding of what your metrics need to be. Once you’ve got that, you then need to be communicating often and have real visibility into what’s happening. What conversations are happening with your customers? Talking with the sellers, talking with marketing and CS to find out exactly what’s working well and what isn’t working and then optimizing for it. When I include the layer of sales enablement, my best practices around that are having a weekly or biweekly cadence of structured forecast calls and clear governance and scheduled performance reviews. Bringing us back to what was our initial goal, thinking about what was the strategy that we were looking to put in place, and looking at our current pipeline or the way in which our sellers are performing helps us kind of zoom in and take a view back to understand the landscape and what’s really driving the change and is it the change that we want? SS: Thank you so much for joining us. I love your perspectives on revenue operations, and I’m so excited that you got the chance to join us and share your expertise with our audience. NB: Thank you. SS: To our audience, thanks for listening. For more insights, tips, and expertise from sales enablement leaders, visit salesenablement.pro. Subscribe to Modern Marketing Engine on your app of choice How does a company with a premium offering, but little or no brand recognition, market to a universe of buyers who assume that solution providers are all pretty much the same? It’s not easy or simple, but thankfully there are companies out there demonstrating there are ways to to build brand equity and gain the attention you need to set up their sales team for conversations with qualified prospects. This episode features, Dean Nicolls, Vice President of Marketing at Jumio. Jumio as a company has found itself in the position described here - in spite of having won numerous impressive awards in its market segment. Dean speaks with Bernie about the ways he’s leading the Jumio marketing team to use PR, analyst relations, and sales enablement to elevate the profile of what the company has to offer as a premium brand. Unknown Premium Brands Build Reputation Through Education At Vengreso, we often say that modern sellers need to sell in ways that modern buyers like to buy through providing valuable content that demonstrates expertise and ability. Dean agrees with that approach. He says that sales is not about selling, it’s about educating.  The Jumio team works overtime to educate their ideal buyers about the challenges of their current approach to identity verification. Any brand who requires a user to register or sign up online - banking, consumer goods, etc. - can recognize the limitations or problems of their current identity verification solutions. Consequently, they are more willing to engage in conversations about how to improve their approach to minimize abandonment and improve the user experience. Listen to learn how you can use an educational approach to build brand equity for your company. Jumio’s 30/70 Split Between Brand Awareness And Demand Generation Dean says that Jumio spends about 30% of its marketing efforts and budget on building brand awareness. The other 70% is used for demand generation activities. The branding side of the split is of particular interest for marketers who find themselves fighting an uphill battle to gain the recognition their solutions deserve. How does Jumio do it? The company works with many PR firms that use a variety of strategies to get the company into the spotlight. Among those strategies are the publication of byline articles, trend jacking, and traditional press coverage when the company has a new product or rolls out an update. But there’s also emphasis placed on entering the company and its products into recognized competitions within the industry. Winning provides a natural way to gain wide-scale attention that puts them on the radar of their ideal buyers. Utilize Stories And Practical Tools To Empower Your Sales Team Success stories have a way of demonstrating product fit that are much more effective than slide decks and presentations. That’s because stories connect to the human beings involved in the buying equation, enabling them to picture themselves in the story, experiencing the solutions described. Dean’s marketing team has developed assets that enable the Jumio sales team to tell effective stories about their product’s positive impact on real-life customers. During this conversation, Dean also tells a story of his own about a big win the Jumio team has experienced through the creation of an online calculator. One member of the Jumio Latin America sales team made use of it in ways the marketing team didn’t anticipate and was able to increase his personal sales numbers to the point that other sellers on the team began to take notice. As you hear what happened through the creation of this easy to use tool you’ll recognize there are likely similar tools or resources your marketing team could create.  Find Champions On Your Team Who Can Empower Everyone Else Premium brands that succeed in penetrating their market do so as a team. They work together to increase the visibility and effectiveness of efforts across the board. One of the ways Jumio has been able to do this is through identifying marketing and sales champions who are excelling in their roles. These team members are invited to share their experience, to become role models for the rest of the team. They’ve discovered that just like their clients appreciate relevant stories, their internal teams appreciate the impact of real-life stories - and when those stories recount the successful experiences of co-workers, their enthusiasm for the Jumio brand value proposition gets amplified and effectiveness increases. Join Bernie as he invites Dean to reveal the careful thought and diligent work that goes into building brand equity for an unknown premium brand, on this episode of the Modern Marketing Engine podcast. We hear a great deal of discussion about protecting access to our digital assets, bank accounts, travel services, retail sites and even government agencies like the IRS and State Tax Authorities.  The recommendations focus on creating a secure name and password, two-factor authentication and possibly a biometric verification such as a fingerprint or voice print. During the RSA conference in San Francisco, I came across another source of digital identity theft, easily overlooked and there is was, staring me in the face one morning when I checked my name on a “financial aggregation” web site.  These are sites that collect information about each of us and then sell that information to anyone, anyone who will attest with an online click that they will only use the information in an authorized procedure, such as qualifying for benefits, or employment verification.  As part of the podcast series on cybersecurity issues, I met with a company that specialized in providing identity verification to financial companies in their online registrations.  The conversation with Dean Nicholls from Jumio provided insights into the methods used to create false digital identities and the technology to detect and deny the creation of these digital identities.

On today's daily tech podcast, I want to explore the timely topic of biometric authentication. Recently, Jumio – the global leader in online identity verification and biometric authentication – launched Jumio Authentication. This new video-selfie authentication tool enables users to verify themselves during high-risk transactions and unlock everything from online accounts to rental cars, replacing passwords on any device. Passwords, multi-factor authentication, and knowledge-based authentication are no longer reliable methods as a result of ongoing data breaches. Most modern businesses do not know with any kind of certainty that the person creating a new online account or logging into an existing account is the person they’re claiming to be – and this is where Jumio Authentication provides a solution. Jumio president, Robert Prigge joins me on the podcast to discuss the impact biometric authentication will have on the digital landscape, why 2FA and KBA are slowly dying, and how organizations seeking to establish a digital chain of trust with their users need to consider biometrics. Robert serves as Jumio’s president where he is responsible for all aspects of Jumio’s business. He previously served as Jumio’s Chief Revenue Officer, leading all customer-facing activities including sales, marketing, and support. Prior to Jumio, Robert was the Chief Sales Officer for Gartner Cool Vendor Infrascale as well as Chief Commercial Officer for Kleiner-Perkins’ finance platform CPF. He also served as the VP of Global Sales & Marketing for the Sterling Commerce Division of AT&T through its $1.4 billion dollar acquisition by IBM. An expert in global business, he is fluent in Japanese and has lived overseas for nearly 15 years.
