In part II of our Olympics special, we meet more of the Olympic entourage supporting Luxembourg's athletes in Paris this summer, plus more sport experts. - Raymond Conzemius - Chef de mission of Team Lëtzebuerg for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, Technical Sports Director at COSL - Christophe Ley - Associate Professor of Applied Statistics at the University of Luxembourg - Aude Aguilaniu - Physiotherapist, ex elite athlete (Ski Cross) - Max Englaro - Strength & Conditioning, & Rehab Coach U23 FC Augsburg - Frank Muller - Sport Psychologist - Nina Goedert - Physiotherapist Raymond Conzemius, Chef de Mission of Team Lëtzebuerg for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 joins me with some of the Olympic Team's entourage including sport psychologist Frank Müller and physiotherapist Nina Goedert. Christophe Ley discusses the increasing use of statistics in sport science and many accompanied sports ventures. Strength & Conditioning, & Rehab Coach for U23 FC Augsburg, Max Englaro, uses such metrics to work with his footballers. And Aude Aguilaniu, now a physiotherapist, previously an Olympic level athlete for Ski Cross talks about the absolute need to build resilience after career-shattering injuries. Raymond is a former international athlete in high jump, and still holds the national record with 2.22m. Unfortunately he didn't have the chance to participate in the Olympic Games or World Championships but has happily found a career supporting others to attain that dream. Conzemius is the Founder and Former director of Sportlycée, the sport secondary school in Luxembourg, and highlights the importance of an integrated approach to sports development in Luxembourg. Max Englaro is a Strength & Conditioning, and Rehab Coach for FC Augsburg U23. Prior to this, he was Head of Performance in the Vienna Football Academy. Max observes how young children or adolescents are talent spotted and then developed into sports stars with the help of targeted training, nutrition, medication and sleep, to name but a few of the metrics. With increasing emphasis on sport sciences the measurements and data around elite performance can enhance results. Christophe Ley, Associate Professor of Applied Statistics at the University of Luxembourg, President of the Luxembourg Statistical Society, President of ECAS (European Center for Advanced Statistics Courses) and leader of the international network S-TRAINING (bridging sports science and data science) is, in fact, the catalyst of these two week's of Olympic conversations. Christophe and Yves Dominicy (from last week's show) have written books on statistics in sport. Through chosen measurements it is possible to use maths to predict outcomes of matches. The accuracy of such predictions naturally depends on many factors. For instance, handball will give you about 81% accuracy compared to football where, apparently, more luck is involved in scoring and there are generally fewer scores. So with football the outcome of positive prediction stands at about 65%. Sport medicine and metrics is a fast growing industry, even for non-professional athletes, with the possibility of wearables and nutrition information available to us all. However, data science and AI is also vital to help prevent injury. Christophe will be organising the international MathSport Conference next year in Luxembourg, June 2025. https://math.uni.lu/midas/events/mathsports2025/ Aude Aguilaniu is now a physiotherapist and researcher, having previously been a world-class skier. Aude actually qualified for the Sotchi Winter Olympics in 2014 but was seriously injured just a few months before and so couldn't participate. She talks about resilience building, injury prevention and her latest research project on injury prevention: Healthy Active. Frank Müller is a former competitive basketball player and now a sport psychologist at the Sportlycée in Luxembourg. He is also an external expert for the LIHPS (Luxembourg Institute for High Performance in Sports) and the COSL (National Olympic Committee), providing psychological support to elite athletes and coaches. Frank talks about his different responsibilities and how he coaches the minds of elite athletes for all possible eventualities. He also works with the group around that athlete which includes coaches, physios and parents. As with so many things, being an elite athlete means that you sit in the centre of a team of experts. Nina Goedert, a sports physiotherapist, reiterates the absolute importance of communication in a cross-disciplinary collaboration. Nina Goedert works with athletes of all ages and levels, those dealing with injury and those working on prevention strategies. She has participated in multiple national and international sports events in her role as a sports physio, including the Tokyo Olympic Games 2021, World Games 2022, European Games 2019 & 2023, Games of the Small States of Europe 2019 & 2023, and several European Championships in Karate, etc.). Nina will be part of the team supporting the athletes in Paris this summer. We wish all of the athletes the very best of luck this summer in the Olympic Games, and the supporting entourage too! https://teamletzebuerg.lu/ https://www.fcaugsburg.de/games/?team=u23 www.sportlycee.lu https://math.uni.lu/midas/events/mathsports2025/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/raymond-conzemius-328a9147/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophe-ley-b71607166/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/aude-aguilaniu-24a05343/

Martha and I were blessed to have Jarrett Dunbar as a guest on Old School Thoughts because we wanted to hear his perspective on a segment of life based on his experiences. Dunbar questioned the gap that is developing and that can continue to broaden between people of "New School" and those of us who are "Old School." I clearly learned a lot and look forward to our next conversation.
The last thing I heard from Martha, as we were hanging up from our phone call, was "Frank, what are you going to give as a title?" At that time - I really didn't know because I usually listen to the finished recording alone to actively listen. This time I initially titled it, "Sometimes We Need Word of Mouth." That triggered me to recall what we would say, in our community, about those who say too much out of turn. We would taught to say that the person "Spilled the Beans." Though this is a public platform, Martha and I have to agreed to keep the information close hand for our listeners to pass on by word of mouth. That is how effective our ancestors and organizations operated. That used effective "Word of Mouth" while using public technology.

My guest is Frank Mead, an Arizona native who's spent the last 10 years in the horticulture industry. Some of his experiences include working in the Conservation Core, a branch of Americore, where he helped to build trails in national parks and cooperated with fire crews during fire season. While he doesn't have a formal background in birding, his older sister is an avid birder and has taken him along for many birding outings. In this episode, the speakers dive into the JIED special issue 'Illicities - City-Making and Organized Crime'.Cities concentrate economic wealth and political power, leading to conflicts over social organization, political participation, and resource distribution. Scholars in the social sciences, particularly urban geography, have long examined the unequal modes and effects of value production and extraction in cities, emphasizing their connection to capitalist interests, neoliberal deregulation, and global investment flows. These studies have critiqued the exploitative nature of neoliberal urban development. However, cities also serve as arenas where collaborations between formal states and illicit actors occur, necessitating a closer examination of the deep intertwining of illicit activities and city-making in social and material terms. As a whole, the Special Issue focuses on the contested efforts of competing governance actors to establish territorial control through violence in urban areas. By bringing the process of state-making to the city, the editors and authors see the concept of city-making as a way of claiming sovereignty that recognizes the political materiality of cities. In this context, criminal organizations and groups also seek to assert themselves or benefit from city-making processes, making infrastructural and other material aspects important indicators of power dynamics and contested vehicles for political authority.

On today's episode I have the pleasure of talking to Frank M. Ligons who specializes in exploring the benefits, safety, and payment strategies regarding Ketamine treatment in addressing mental, physical, and addiction-related illness. After 25 years of suicidal thoughts and dozens of medications, Frank stumbled upon a psychiatric treatment he had never heard of: low-dose intravenous ketamine. Since all else failed, any treatment he hadn't heard of must be worth a try. After exhausting decades fighting for his life in the conventional psychiatric medication system, ketamine removed those deadly ideations that claimed his grandmother's life when he was a young child. Funeral Bulletin for Frank Emil OelschlagerBorn: June 8th, 1928Baptized: July 1st, 1928Confirmed: March 29th, 1942 Entered eternal rest in Christ: December 25th, 2021 Obituary Frank E. Oelschlager, 93, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2021, at Brookdale Conway Assisted Living in Orlando, FL. Frank was born on June 8, 1928, in Bridgeville, PA, the eldest of six children born to Frank M. and Pauline (Engel) Oelschlager. Frank grew up during the Great Depression. At age 11 he went to work in Carozza's Market where he worked part-time as many as 6 days a week until completing high school. Frank then worked for an auto service station until he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Following basic training in Colorado, he was stationed in Alaska, attaining the rank of sergeant. Upon his honorable discharge, Frank returned to Bridgeville and worked first at the Flannery Bolt Co. where his father worked, and later at the Universal Cyclops steel mill. In 1954 Frank met the love of his life through a bowling league. He and Irene (“Renie”) were married on May 11, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Bridgeville, PA. Not long afterward, Frank was laid off from the steel mill, so he and Irene indulged in a honeymoon trip to Florida. Tired of the difficult conditions and unsteady employment of factory work, Frank decided to try a different path. He landed a Sales/Marketing job with Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania, where he worked for the remainder of his career. He eventually became the sales representative to Westinghouse Electric in Pittsburgh and was so appreciated by his customer they offered him a job! While working to support his family, Frank devoted time to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in West View, PA. Over the years he served in the roles of Sunday School Superintendent, Elder, Trustee, Vice President, and President. Upon retirement in 1985, Frank and Irene relocated to Melbourne, FL where they became active members of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Frank served in various roles including Elder, Vice President, President, and Custodian. He was also active in-service projects with the Telephone Pioneers of America. Frank and Irene traveled extensively. They visited all 50 states, Canada, Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand, and several countries in South America and the Caribbean. They also made visiting family in Pennsylvania a priority. When he wasn't volunteering or traveling, Frank filled his free time with DIY projects and household chores. He also enjoyed swimming, long walks, happy hour, and talking to anyone, anytime, anywhere. Following Irene's devastating stroke in 2014 Frank gave her countless hours of faithful companionship until her death in 2017, despite suffering from depression which led him to isolate himself from supportive friends and to drop most of the activities he had previously enjoyed. His own physical decline the last year of his life only exacerbated that illness. Frank is survived by his two children, Eric Oelschlager, and April (Richard) Drucker; his brothers, Robert (Sandy) and Wilbur (Kay) Oelschlager; his sisters, Jane Kozak, Judy Dames, and Carol Lockhart; and 14 nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 61 years, and five nieces and nephews. The family has chosen to hold a memorial service and celebration of life this summer in Frank's hometown of Bridgeville, PA. At that time, his and Irene's cremains will be buried together at Melrose Cemetery. Details will be announced at a later date. The family wishes to acknowledge Beverly Floyd for being a friend to Frank and Irene, and for providing support that enabled Frank to live independently since Irene's death, until the last few months of his life. Special thanks also to Pastors Ron Myer and Kevin Duff and the lay ministers of Faith Viera Lutheran in Rockledge for attending to Frank's spiritual needs, and to the care teams at AdventHealth Medical Center in Lake Wales, and Brookdale Conway Assisted Living and Cornerstone Hospice in Orlando. Expressions of condolence may be made to the family using the Tribute Wall of this obituary. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frank's memory may be made to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) at www.nami.org or to your local community of Christian faith.

In this episode, Alice and Nicolas interview Dr Frank Möller, a researcher at the Tampere Peace Research Institute, Finland. Frank studies peace photography - both how photography can represent peace, and how such representations can contribute to peace. He has published several books on this topic, including Visual Peace: Images, Spectatorship and the Politics of Violence (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) and Peace Photography (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). He also leads a project on 'peace videography' and is co-founder of https://www.imageandpeace.com, a hub for researchers, artists and anyone interested in the link between visual culture and peace. In the podcast, we ask Frank what distinguishes 'peace photography' from other kinds of photography. That gets us talking about the long tradition of war photography, 'anti-war' photography, and the tendency to define and represent peace in relation to war - for example, by visualising peace through images of aftermath or post-conflict reconciliation and reconstruction. Frank argues for a broader approach to peace photography, and discusses the power of images of 'everyday peace' even in the midst of a war. He argues that if we can capture images of everyday peaceful practices, their momentum might grow and they might go on to generate more peaceful practices in turn. We also talk about the role that images of peace can play in mediation processes, through 'active looking'. As Frank puts it in one of his books, 'images reflect the world; in order to change the world, we need to change the images we see.' Among other questions, we asked Frank:is it easier to represent war than peace - or, at least, to represent cliches of war and peace?why is there no easily recognised tradition of 'peace photography' as there is for war photography?what role does photography play alongside other media (texts, films, works of art, etc) in shaping our habits of visualising war and peace?how can efforts to represent or visualise 'pockets' or 'islands' of everyday peace engender more peaceful practices in the wider world? How can we build peace with images? We hope you enjoy the episode! For a version of our podcast with close captions, please use this link.
