Episode 19 Cheri Jo BatesOn October 30, 1966, 18 year old college Freshman Cheri Jo Bates was brutally murdered on her college campus at Riverside City College in Riverside, CA. She was savagely stabbed and her throat slashed. Her murder shocked the quiet Southern CA city. Residents wondered who would kill the pretty and popular cheerleader. Police theorized that Cheri's killer disabled her VW Bug while Cheri was in the college library and when she came out to leave and found her car disabled, the killer came along acting as a good samaritan and offering help. After gaining Cheri's trust, he led her to a dimly lit alley between two abandoned homes on school property and initiated his attack. 30 days after Cheri Jo was killed, an anonymous typed letter was sent to police & the local press claiming responsibility for Cheri Jo's murder. Police initially believed that the confession letter contained details only the killer could know, but in reality, much of what was in the letter was published in AP news stories about the case. Additional letters would come in Cheri Jo's case 6 months after her murder. This time the hand scrawled letters were sent to not only to police and the press, but cruelly, also to Cheri Jo's father. The Riverside Police locked onto a suspect that they felt was a jilted suitor of Cheri Jo's. He was never identified publicly, but was given the moniker 'Bob Barnett' in online discussions of the case. For years, police were interested in this suspect, but did not have enough to build a case against him. Complicating matters, he moved out of the country. When the suspect returned to the US for a visit, police swooped in and obtained his DNA for comparison against DNA in Cheri Jo's case. It seems that the DNA collected from the suspect did not match DNA in the Bates case. But that did not stop Riverside PD from pursuing a case against their favorite suspect. In 1970, a tipster in Riverside read a story about the infamous Zodiac Killer attacks and letters happening in the SF Bay area over 400 miles North of Riverside. Feeling that Cheri's case may be connected to the Zodiac crimes, the tipster reached out to SF Chronicle reporter Paul Avery asking him to see if the cases may be connected. Avery came away convinced that Cheri Jo's case was connected to the Zodiac case. The state's top handwriting expert Sherwood Morrill agreed that writing on letters in the Bates case matched writing in the Zodiac case. Police however were split on the conclusion. While investigators in the Zodiac case were open to the possibility that Cheri Jo Bates was an early Zodiac victim, Riverside PS dismissed the idea, instead focusing on their favorite suspect. Decades later, Cheri Jo's case and the Zodiac case remain hopelessly intertwined, and both are still unsolved. Was Cheri Jo an early Zodiac victim? Or was she the victim of a jilted suitor as Riverside PD suspects? In this episode, the team dives into the clues and evidence; evidence which contains DNA that's half a century old. Welcome to our serial killer podcast. For fans of the true crime podcast genre. This is episode 7 of our serial killer podcast, Serial Killer Z to A  In this latest instalment of the serial killer podcast we learn about Richard Radetich, a San Francisco police officer who was murdered in the line of duty. During their investigations the authorities struggled to come up with a suspect for this heinous crime, and this was the case until a letter was mailed in from the Zodiac Killer, and he appeared to claim credit for this brutal killing. Was this despicable serial killer really the guilty party, or was he merely trying to enhance his notoriety in the Bay Area? Later in this serial podcast episode we look into the case of 25 year old nurse Donna Lass. Donna was last seen moments before she finished working the late shift at the nurse's station in the Sahara Tahoe Casino, one early September night in 1970. Donna was never seen after her shift finished, she appeared to have vanished into thin air. Her family were left devastated and vowed to leave no stone unturned. However, they were unable to find any trace of their daughter. A postcard which was delivered to Paul Avery at the San Francisco Chronicle, which appeared to have come from the Zodiac Killer, claimed to be responsible for the abduction and murder of Donna. This week, the intrepid Ellroy Boys venture into serial killer cinema. First, they discuss David Fincher's magnificent, epic procedural drama, 2007's Zodiac, in addition to 1971's singular and bizarre grindhouse oddity, The Zodiac Killer. The latter picture was in part crafted in collaboration with crime reporter, Paul Avery, who thought a movie might draw the real killer out of hiding, by drawing him into an actual movie theater. Furthermore, the boys explore why Fincher's film functions so well and why it remains so strangely addictive. It's a film, unafraid of it's inherent tragedy, of its bold dismissal of the idea that there can be closure and catharsis for the casualties of this monster. It explores how unchecked obsession eats some men alive while others manage to circumvent the abyss without letting it consume them. Despite a lack of closure, we still learn that people move on and that there is hope, but that it's not always in line with expectation. Ultimately, Zodiac is one of the last American cinematic tragedies writ large and is hugely emblematic of a kind of film we no longer see. -produced by @GOLDpny feat: @blauer_geist @luso_brendan @rubberwidow

In Episode 6, Bolton and Grace finish recapping the 2007 movie, Zodiac, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on. The movie was directed by David Fincher and is based on Robert Graysmith’s book, Zodiac. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as political cartoonist/sleuth/author Robert Graysmith, Robert Downey Jr. as San Francisco Chronicle reporter Paul Avery, and Mark Ruffalo as San Francisco Police Inspector Dave Toschi. The film focuses on the rise of the Zodiac killer in the San Francisco bay area during the late 1960s and early 1970s and Robert Graysmith’s fascination with solving the mystery of the Zodiac’s identity. Both Fincher and Graysmith had access to actual Zodiac case files in their work and generously provide viewers with accurate reproductions of Zodiac letters and writings throughout the film. Zodiac provides an entertaining and frustrating look into the mystery of the Zodiac killer. Nonetheless, it is important to note that because the movie is based on Robert Graysmith’s book, it focuses on the suspects Graysmith was most interested in and is by no means a complete look at all of the Zodiac suspects identified by law enforcement. Sources:Zodiac (2007)Graysmith, Robert. Jonathan and Fil from the The Pod Charles Cinecas‪t‬ - the official podcast of The Prince Charles Cinema return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jonathan’s choice Zodiac.   Zodiac is the 2007 David Fincher drama based on the real-life Zodiac Killer that not only killed but also terrorised the San Francisco police and the Chronicle. James Vanderbilt’s fantastic screenplay is based on the 1986 non-fiction book of the same name by Robert Graysmith. It stars stars Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch, Chloë Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall and Dermot Mulroney. Ruffalo plays Inspector Dave (real-life Bullitt/Dirty Harry) Toschi as the main police investigator with Edwards’ Insp. Bill Armstrong and Gyllenhaal plays Graysmith, political cartoonist turned investigator and Downey Jr plays Paul Avery, crime reporter at the Chronicle. Spoiler, the Zodic Killer was never caught, Fincher’s Zodiac is meticulously faithful to the real-life murders and attacks but less of you usual whodunnit and more an exploration of obsession (Graysmith is a mix of Boy Scout and detective on the side) and character, both Toschi and Avery’s lives become consumed by the Zodiac. Character and ambiguity are favoured over action scenes and machismo. Scores  [supsystic-tables id=207] Despite the run time of two hours plus Zodiac still scores pretty highly across all categories and near the top of Flixwatcher and guests top Fincher films and scores a very impressive 4.49 overall. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!   On Part 5 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay try to crack one of the most famous unsolved serial killer cases of all time in David Fincher's 2007 historically fictionalized true crime-esque mystery thriller, ZODIAC. Based on the hunt for the titular serial killer, who is believed to have murdered double-digit people up and down the California coast in the second half of the 20th century, ZODIAC follows the story of Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), a San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist in the late 60s and early 70s, who becomes obsessed with the Zodiac murders and the puzzles the killer anonymously sent to local newspapers. Graysmith's obsession is shared by the Chronicle's crime reporter Paul Avery (a pre-Iron Man Robert Downey Jr.), who pesters and prods the police's investigation, led by Inspector David Toschi (a pre-Hulk Mark Ruffalo). The police and the Chronicle butt heads on several occasions over the course of the investigation, as Fincher weaves an immensely engrossing tale filled with suspense and tension, even in the unlikeliest of places, as Graysmith's attempts to hunt down the Zodiac span more than a decade, two marriages, and likely several friendships. The countdown trio give their thoughts on one of the true crime genre's original critical successes, its all-star ensemble cast, and whether the film justifies its lengthy runtime.

CRISPR-Cas9 has rapidly transformed our ability to perform targeted gene editing. While the technique has received much interest for its potential in the field of gene therapy, advances in its high-throughput use mean it can now open up a wealth of opportunities in drug discovery too. CRISPR-Cas9, short for clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, and CRISPR-associated protein-9, has quickly established itself as an important tool for precision gene editing. This powerful technology has transformed our ability to precisely target genomic sites, proving to be faster, cheaper and more accurate than other existing genome editing methods. The American serial killer who dubbed himself "Zodiac" began his reign of terror in 1968 and was never officially identified or captured. 50-years later, the mystery and the allure of the Zodiac crimes remains the white whale for many professional and amateur investigators alike. The obsession over the case is the centerpiece theme to the 2007 film "Zodiac" from film auteur David Fincher. You may remember Fincher from such films as Fight Club and Seven ("Alien 3 doesn't get enough visual love." -Matt), but Fincher takes his first bite of (mostly) non-fiction in this Police/Journalism procedural. From Fincher's take on the obsession surrounding the case, from Robert Downey Jr.'s worst case scenario performance in Paul Avery, to Anthony Edwards' Bill Armstrong escaping the case with his soul, we see a complicated and woven tale. Not only about an enticing mystery, but about the price tag that comes with trying to solve it. In solidarity with our Hello Sweetie Podcast Network sisters over at "This is the Place," the Nighthawks bring you this extra-long True Crime special. Much like Zodiac is about obsession, the Zodiac episode is also about the grander phenomenon of True Crime as a societal interest. Why is this particular genre doing so well in this day and age? It's a hot take, right off the griddle and onto the blue plate special, at the conceptual Nighthawks Diner. Pull up a spot in the booth, get comfy, and lets talk about movies and True Crime. The transition from being in the business of running successful restaurants to becoming forefront in the research and treatment of a rare disease was a sudden and unexpected change: but not a shift Paul hesitated to make. For him, his love for and concern of the well-being of his daughters, diagnosed with FA, made his decision to join the research and development of a treatment of FA a natural fit.   And in Paul’s willingness lies a lesson for all of us. We ourselves may not have a background in medicine, biology, or genetics. We may get overwhelmed at becoming part of whatever team is calling to us. But at some level, we all have something to contribute.   Paul was able to use his economic and negotiating skills to become a powerful voice in FARA. Not to mention the unbelievable benefits Outback Steakhouse and other companies under his influence have provided at FARA events.   What is your calling in life? Could the fact that your background seems unrelated to that be not a weakness, but a strength?   We want to thank Paul Avery for reminding us that strength and accomplishment comes from everyone bringing their diverse skills to the table.   Also mentioned in this episode: 2DD Challenges: https://twodisableddudes.com/2dd-challenges/ Instagram post by @texassmith: “We won't stand on the outside of our lives, looking in, wondering what it would be like if we had the courage to show up and be seen. We'll stand in front of the walls that tell our stories and show our scars. Those scars are a gift; they say, 'See, I’ve been there, and here I am still standing and you will too.' They become badges of honor, agents of healing. They become who we are.”

Churros y Palomitas
