Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. It is day 191 of the war with Hamas. Editor David Horovitz and military reporter Emanuel Fabian join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Late Saturday night, Iran launched a large wave of some 300 attack drones and missiles from its territory toward the Jewish state, in the first-ever direct attack on Israel by the Islamic Republic, triggering air raid sirens throughout the country early Sunday as the military worked to intercept the Iranian projectiles. Fabian walks us through the timeline of the Iranian attack and explains what appears to have been Iran's goal. We hear which allies helped out in foiling the attack and how the long-range Arrow air defense system managed to knock down the “vast majority” of the 120 ballistic missiles, according to the IDF, although some penetrated Israel's defenses and struck the Nevatim Airbase in southern Israel. We hear about some sense of the IDF's next steps and how it may retaliate. The United States took one of the lead roles in staving off the attack on Israel. Horovitz weighs in on what this means for the reportedly fraying Israel-US relationship, as well as that with Israel's other allies, including Jordan. For the latest updates, please see The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Live blog April 14, 2024 Waiting for the drones and the missiles, at the opening of a regional conflict Iran fires some 300 drones, missiles at Israel in first-ever direct attack; 99% downed As Israel waits for potential attack, what are Iran's missile and drone capabilities? Every child could receive a pot of £1,000 at birth to be channelled into long-term investments in UK growth under proposals to give the young a leg up and revive a ‘stagnant' economy. The idea of a ‘New Generation Trust' is part of a package of reforms that could add £225billion to the economy, says a report by the City of London Corporation. A £1,000 payment to all newborn children would need to be invested - and it is claimed this could provide long-term capital for UK PLC.  It revives memories of the Child Trust Fund scheme launched by Gordon Brown two decades ago, and later scrapped by George Osborne – and that hasn't exactly been a roaring success. This week, Lee Boyce, Simon Lambert and Georgie Frost discuss the merits of the idea – and why whether this happens or not parents should start building a pot for children as early as possible. It's been another exciting week for savings – Santander has a new best buy easy-access deal, Moneybox has launched a top cash Isa and First Direct is offering five prizes of £12,500 for those who switch current account – including a £175 bonus for doing so. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey has been speaking in front of MPs at the Treasury Select Committee about base rate – are we close to the peak? House prices saw their biggest slump since 2009 according to Halifax, with the average home falls £14,000 in a year – chiming with similar data from Nationwide. And finally, electric cars are slumping in value – many models have lost 30 per cent or more in a year. Is now the time to buy, and what on earth is going on?

Rob discusses the frustration of being charged excessive fees by banks when using debit or credit cards abroad. He shares his personal experience of being in Mexico for an extended period and wanting to find the best banking options to avoid unnecessary charges.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Avoid using standard debit cards from banks like TSB, Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, and Halifax when traveling abroad, as they charge high fees for cash withdrawals and spending. Consider using debit cards like First Direct, Chase, or Starling for fee-free overseas spending and ATM withdrawals. These cards have no non-sterling transaction fees, non-sterling cash fees, or ATM withdrawal fees. For credit cards, the Barclaycard Rewards Credit Card (Visa) and Halifax Clarity Mastercard are recommended for use abroad. Both cards offer fee-free spending and competitive exchange rates. However, it is advised not to withdraw cash using credit cards due to high interest rates. Research and compare different cards to find the best option for your specific needs and preferences. BEST MOMENTS "Are you fed up with getting screwed over by your bank left, right and centre when you're abroad and you are getting fee after fee after fee just for withdrawing your own cash or spending your own cash?" "I like the best deal that I can possibly get, especially when it comes to being able to live my life as normally as I can in a different country." "So there are obviously loads and loads of credit cards and debit cards out there. All of them are going to have their pros and cons." Stephen's interest in advertising came from his favourite subjects at school – art and economics – and so he looked for a career that combined the creative and the commercial. He also was an avid reader of the ads and used to make montages of the ads from magazines as part of his art course and this helped set his heart on working in advertising. Stephen studied economics and graduated in 1980, at a time when the economy was in recession and jobs were scarce. He applied for agency and marketing graduate training roles and found his start in a marketing at Nestlé. After a couple of years, he moved into the agency world, working at Lintas, then at a start-up agency and finally he joined WCRS for the first time in 1988. He left for Leo Burnett to be Deputy MD and then re-joined WCRS in 1994, becoming Managing Director and later CEO in 1998. The agency was something of a rollercoaster ride and he saw it through some lean and some great years, notably winning its biggest pitch ever, winning the National Lottery in 1998 and with an array of formidable campaigns for clients such as Carling, BMW, First Direct, 118 118 and Orange. The management team bought the agency from Havas in 2004 and relaunched it with a group of companies under the Engine brand. Stephen was then approached to join DDB and become Chief Executive there in 2007. DDB and its forerunner, BMP was agency he had admired most throughout his career, but it had suffered from management instability, and he helped to secure its position and get back to something like its old form. In 2011, a small-hours conversation in Cannes with James Murphy and David Golding started the ball rolling for DDB to buy adam&eve. Months of top-secret negotiations followed, but not so secret that rumours leaked ahead of the deal being done. Finally in 2012 the agencies merged and Stephen became Chair of adam&eveDDB. 18 months later, Stephen left to pursue other ventures, starting a financial services business, along with working at Next 15 Plc (who years later bought Engine coincidentally). Stephen became CEO of the Advertising Association in September 2016. The AA's mission is ‘to promote the role and rights of responsible advertising - advertising that is trusted, inclusive and sustainable – and its value to people, society, businesses and the economy'. All the leading media owners and trade bodies are members of the AA. Stephens's past board roles include Deputy Chair of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and Chairman, Changing Faces, a facial disfigurement charity. He is also a past President of the IPA and of NABS. He is currently a Governor of Ravensbourne University, London and is on the board of the History of Advertising Trust. Jonathan Johnson, from recruitment company, Auxato, got in touch and asked me to write a piece for him, explaining how it is I got from being stand-up comic and voice actor to a renowned (his words) longstanding, financial writer for Money Week. I thought readers would like it and he kindly gave me permission to republish it here. The questions are Jonathan's.Stand-up comedy – what life skills did it teach you?Stand-up comedy teaches you lots of things. How to stand on stage in front of a bunch of strangers. How to present yourself. How to entertain people. How to cope with pressure. How to deal with difficult situations and difficult people. How to think on your feet. Communication. Clarity. These are all really useful life skills that you might call upon in any number of other situations. Everyone should go and be a stand-up for a bit. But there is a lot more to being a stand-up than what you see on stage. Behind the scenes, every comic is running a small business. Every day you are trying to get gigs. You're sending out emails, making phone calls, posting on social media, all with the aim of pushing your brand, getting noticed and getting better work. You're running a diary. You're invoicing for the gigs you have done. You're chasing money from slow payers, while trying to extract money from the unsavoury promoters who are trying to wriggle out of paying you at all.You are travelling up and down the country four, five, sometimes seven nights a week to places you have probably only ever heard of, meeting all sorts of different people. As a result comics often know the country as well as anyone - all the while trying to keep costs down so that you can exit the gig at a profit. On top of all of that, but most fundamental of all, you have got to write an act that people find funny. You learn so many skills doing comedy. Even if you are not destined for stardom, which most of us aren't, the discipline still equips you for life. You just need to look at the many people who started out as comedians who have since gone on to achieve huge success in other fields, from Joe Rogan to Volodymyr Zelensky, to know there must be something in it.Yet, if you're a potential employer looking at someone's CV and you see the word comedian, I bet that makes you less likely, rather than more likely, to call them in for an interview. In fact, most comedians who decide they've done it for long enough and now want to try something else, find it near impossible to find employment because of the fact they have comedian on their CV. The only option for most is to set up another business. Please tell your friends on Twitter, Linked and Facebook about this really interesting article. What a random hotchpotch of a career you have. How did it happen?I'm now 53. The longest I've ever lasted in a “proper” job is three months. This was back in 1992, when I was 23. I used to get up every morning, get the tube into Leicester Square and then do 10am to 6.30pm in an office. I hated it. It was not that bad a job either, but I hated being stuck in an office all day with no fresh air and not owning my own time. That's not to say I'm not hard-working. I'm extremely hard-working. You just need to look at my output to see that. I would spend the next 15 years working occasionally as an actor, regularly as a voiceover (for some reason I always got more voiceover work than acting) and then, from 1997, as a comedian. All the while, I was trying to get stuff published - I wrote two novels and a million articles - but never with any success. I think I got one article in the Big Issue. But by 2006, I had made a bit of money, some in property (by accident) and some from voiceovers: I had been, at various points, the voice of such eminent products as First Direct, Nintendo 64 and the National Lottery. My dad had made a bit of money, too. Between us, we were trying to figure out how to turn our bit of money into a lot of money; because we were trying to raise five million quid to bring Kisses on a Postcard into the West End. From what I was reading at the time, commodities and gold, especially, seemed to be the place to invest, particularly with all the growth that was taking place in China. There were all sorts of people talking about it. But how to meet them and talk to them, without having to pay them? A podcast …What gave you the inspiration for the podcast interviews?I always knew I'd be a good presenter, even though I'd never actually done it. I was good at hosting comedy clubs and other such stuff. I approached a mining PR company called Commodity Watch and suggested we start a podcast. They didn't really understand what I was talking about, so I did it anyway and began interviewing all these various people I'd heard on the internet talking so wisely about stuff. My very first interview was with the billionaire, Jim Rogers, who had run the Quantum Fund with George Soros. My next two were with noted silver analyst, David Morgan, and the gold expert, James Turk. I quickly learnt that you could secure interviews with people “above your station” quite easily, if they have something to promote, such as a book. A lot of the time people are happy to help out, even if they don't have something to promote. To my surprise, there were far fewer walled gardens in the worlds of investment and commodities than in comedy and TV. People were much more open.Subscribe to The Flying Frisby. What brought about the job at Moneyweek? One of the people I interviewed was Merryn Somerset Webb who, at the time, was editor at Money Week. “We need people like you to come and write for us,” she said. “Come into the office next week and meet Toby, the MD.”So I did. Here I am, 17 years later and I am still writing the same weekly column, a column that has been popular and, in terms of longevity at least, successful. I've since published three books with a fourth on the way. I've written several documentaries, one of which was a huge internet sensation (even if I was never properly credited) and more besides. I think it's fair to say that partnership with Moneyweek has worked - for them and me. But if I had sent my CV in to Merryn, all she would have seen was stand-up comedian, voiceover artist, occasional actor, Johnny-come-lately podcast host and unpublished novelist. I don't think she would for a second have gone, “I need to get this bloke writing for us.” Pretty much any employer would have looked at my CV and passed it by.I now have this ridiculously random hotchpotch career that I can't begin to explain. I'm a financial writer, comedian, singer-songwriter, comedy music video maker, TV presenter and voiceover artist. A very nice chap who works in internet marketing and likes my output - but despairs at its lack of clarity - with whom I correspond frequently, put this graphic together to try and explain what I do.What can we learn from that episode with Merryn? Two things. One, I don't believe there is any substitute for face-to-face meetings. Meeting someone in the flesh inspires trust in a way that not a million emails can. (That, by the way, is, I think, why I never had stuff published. I just sent it in. I'm not even sure it got read. It's much easier to ignore a letter or an email than someone in person).Often it works in reverse too. You really admire someone online for whatever it is they've written or said, but then you meet them in person and realise this is not the type of person you should be listening too.Second, when you meet someone through the medium of an interview for a podcast, rather than just a meeting, it's like a heightened encounter. You get through so much more in an hour than you otherwise would. Get to know anyone who hosts a regular podcast and you will see they are total mavens. How many people do Joe Rogan, Konstantin Kisin or Steven Bartlett know as a result of their podcasts? How powerful are their networks? They are super connected - and trusted. Any introductions they make will carry weight. As it turns out, stand-up comedy was the ideal training ground for being a financial writer. In comedy, if the audience doesn't understand you, they don't laugh. If they don't laugh, you die. Thus does the comedian quickly learn the vital discipline of clarity. You also learn that you have to entertain people if you want to keep their attention. No such discipline exists in the world of financial journalism. Obfuscation is everywhere. It almost pays to be obfuscatory because then you can say, “Oh I didn't mean that, I meant this.” Some of the broadsheet journalists - guys who regularly win Finance Journalist of the Year or whatever - are as dull as ditch water and about as clear. Half the time, you have no idea what it is they are droning on about. I barely make it past the first paragraph. But do you know what? Life skills you learn from stand-up comedy

Study finds first direct evidence connecting depression with low serotonin – study co-author Dr David Erritzoe provides novel insights

2022 was a decidedly volatile year in the field of psychiatry. In July, a study led by Dr Joanna Moncrieff found that there was no convincing evidence that depression is connected with low serotonin, let alone caused by it. In November, while the psychiatric profession and, perhaps more significantly, the millions of people taking antidepressants were still reeling from Moncrieff's findings, a study co-authored by Dr David Erritzoe was published which provided the first direct evidence that serotonin release is blunted in the brains of people with depression. BizNews spoke to Erritzoe who explained the findings of the brain imaging study which is sparking debate within psychiatry about the so-called serotonin hypothesis of depression and challenging the findings of Moncrieff's controversial study. Erritzoe, who is the Clinical Director in Centre for Psychedelic Research and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at Imperial College London, also provided fascinating insight into Imperial's novel studies investigating the brain mechanisms and therapeutic potential of MDMA, ketamine and classic psychedelics. What will the stock market do in 2023? Is the Legal & General dividend safe? Where's Paul? Find out the answer to none of these questions on this week's PlayingFTSE show! Kicking us off, Steve D has some fun facts about the show. As a podcast, we get a Spotify wrapped just like (or nothing like) everybody else. At one point, we made it into the top 5% of most followed podcasts on Spotify! Thank you to everyone who put us there, everyone who keeps listening and watching, and everyone who has sat through the tirade of adverts that Steve accidentally lined up on last week's show. He also has some notes on his big Larry… Steve also has some exciting news about a new savings account. It's from First Direct and pays 7% interest on an amount between £75 and £300. Who needs investing? What is our show even *for*? And do the Steves have this account? Find out… In other news, the FCA thinks that people shouldn't be stashing their money in savings accounts yielding 0.25%. We tend to think the same thing with our money, but Steve W is wondering why the authorities have finally got around to this idea. Their plan is to lower the qualification requirement for financial advisors dealing with people who have basic needs. Never mind what we think — what does actual financial advisor Tom Morgan think? Find out at the end of the show… One of the things you might like to invest in is the Meet Kevin Pricing Power ETF. That's a thing and we're here to discuss it. Steve D thinks it looks strange, Steve W thinks it looks expensive. There's clearly some merit to the idea that pricing power is important and Meet Kevin has a huge following, of the kind we'll likely never have, and he's a very very good salesperson. But what kind of ETF would we be if we were going to start a fund of our own? Steve W has found something he prefers. Preferred stocks. Our resident value investor has a hunch that stocks that pay fixed dividends might be about to become a sought-after asset as a recession cuts into corporate profits. And there's one in particular that's on his agenda. Steve D reads Steve W's written work, so he knows what it is. And attentive viewers will recognise it from a previous episode. All on this week's PlayingFTSE podcast!

As much as lending has changed in the last few years, its fundamental tenet—putting the customer at the center of every choice—remains unchanged. Nevertheless, the last few years have brought an abundance of changes fueled by digitization and the adoption of big data. This, combined with shifting borrower expectations, has driven positive impacts in the financial services space. Today, as the UK and the rest of the world experience economic difficulty and uncertainty, lenders must fully comprehend how these conditions affect their customer's creditworthiness and ability to pay. And most importantly, lenders must effectively leverage technology and analytics to make accurate decisions and quickly respond to changing conditions. In this episode, we're joined by Gary Byrne, who manages GDS Link's UK Sales Operations. Gary boasts over 25 years of experience within credit risk and is intimately familiar with the nuances and challenges facing UK lenders and organisations. Gary brings his expertise to the table to shed light on key topics such as: Some steps lenders should take to account for inflation The role of speed and transactional data in the decisioning process Factors slowing down the adoption of Open Banking data How to future-proof your technology stack About Gary Byrne: Gary heads GDS Link's UK business and is responsible for building a scalable, sustainable, targeted sales model focused on forging lasting client partnerships across a diverse yet highly sophisticated market. Jacob Ross is CEO of PebblePost, a pioneer in the practice of programmatic direct mail. Once the leading channel in sophisticated direct marketing, many cast print mailers aside in favor of shiny new digital channels. Jacob explained why this thinking is flawed and how you can embrace a smarter approach to integrated and impactful direct mail during this week's episode of the On Brand podcast. About Jacob Ross Jacob Ross brings 20+ years of adtech experience to his role at PebblePost, which invented an entirely new marketing channel: programmatic direct mail. The platform combines online signals and offline data to reach current and prospective customers at home with personalized mail. Current customers include Mejuri, Lulu and Georgia, ModCloth, and Parachute.   Episode Highlights We opened our conversation talking about the brand of direct mail. “Direct mail is both sophisticated in terms of data and modeling but it's also been labeled as junk mail.” “Advertising is eating us alive,” Jacob notes. “That's why we're seeing traditional channels like direct mail being reborn in a digital-first way.” Where to start with digital-first direct mail? “Everything has to be about the customer—what are they interested in?” Jacob also noted that successful, personalized programmatic direct mail needs to be pulled into the digital suite where its impact can be measured accordingly. Jacob shared a powerful stat: Direct mail sits in the home for an average of 17 days. That's a powerful connection to make with customers. What brand has made Jacob smile recently? Technically, Jacob mentioned Dyson earlier in the show as well but he revisited them again as we closed thanks to a new vacuum that he purchased at the brand's flagship Midtown store. Hello people! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you are all well. This is episode 50, we made it to half a century of face to face conversations held in venues, houses, tour buses, tents, festivals, coffee shops, hotels and pubs around Yorkshire.  I want to thank everyone one who has given their time to have a conversation, Alun, Kieran and Mosh for their help with the recordings and everyone that has listened, got in touch and shared this podcast to help spread the word - it is massively appreciated. None of these episodes would have happened without the various PR companies who have dealt with my many, many emails, artist managers and tour managers who fit these conversations into the busy day of the touring party. Which moves us on to my guest for episode 50, the wonderful Tre Stead, tour manager extraordinaire for Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls.  I first met Tre in January 2019 as she got me past security and through the labyrinth that is the First Direct  Arena in Leeds in order to record episodes 10 and 12 with Frank Turner and Nigel Powel during the mammoth Be Kind tour with amazing supports of Grace Petrie and Jimmy Eat World.  It was clear from our brief interaction that day that she was shit hot at her job of ensuring smooth running of day to day life on tour including rounding up members of the bands, crew and as happened that day, facilitating multiple interviews and pulling people out of said interviews to go and sound check! My bad on the timing, sorry Tre! We have then crossed paths a few times and I heard through other people that Tre can legitimately claim the title of best tour manager as she has won an award for this exact reason. Having seen the impact the pandemic has had on the non performing side of the live music industry as was highlighted by the #wemakelive movement, it felt right to chat to someone who has got through this and is back on the road.  Unsurprisingly, Tre was a delight and gave a really fun conversation.

Gemma is currently Head of People, Development, Experiences, and Innovation at Legal & General and previously spent around eight years in marketing working before moving into an internal role. Over those years, she's worked for top brands like BP, Monsoon, First Direct, and HSBC. During the episode, we talk about innovation and why it's more than just tech. Gemma tells us why she made the switch from direct marketing to an internal role that focuses on innovation and change. We then talk about both product innovation and people innovation and why businesses need to invest in both. Gemma also shares an example of a Vegas hotel that invests in its people and the positive effect that has on the customer experience. We then talk about how small businesses with low resources can innovate and why it's not just something that large companies can invest in. Finally, we discuss innovation in marketing, and Gemma shares another great example.

Joe Gordon and Mark Skipper join James Ashton to discuss keeping up with customer expectation, battling budget cuts, riding your luck and the excitement of opening night. Joe Gordon is the head of First Direct, a trailblazing phone bank when it launched 30 years ago. Part of HSBC, today it has 1.5m customers largely transacting on the internet and smartphone and gearing up for the open banking revolution that could see it recommend insurance and energy deals alongside savings accounts and mortgages. Gordon was unloading carrots as a Sainsbury’s graduate trainee only 15 years ago. After several years at BT, he took over the running of HSBC’s call centres in 2015, moving to First Direct two years later. Mark Skipper is the chief executive of Northern Ballet, the Leeds-based touring company that popularises ballet through more than 200 performances every year in towns and cities across the UK. Dracula, Queen Victoria, Jane Eyre, the Little Mermaid and Casanova have all had the Northern Ballet treatment. Skipper has spent 32 years at the company, joining as deputy stage manager in 1987 and taking the top job in 1996. During his tenure he has carved out new income streams as state funding has fallen, experimented with beaming ballet into cinemas and become a leading voice for the arts outside London.
