Another week, another consent order.   Welcome back to BaaS Island, where regulators keep throwing more bodies at the problem, hoping something will work. Fintech Business Weekly's Jason Mikula chats with Alex about the latest consent orders for Piermont and Sutton, as the duo debate whether or not “direct” has lost all meaning. Is it possible to really go “direct” from a fintech company to a bank without middleware? Too much regulatory authority has pushed banks away from doing everything except for technology, so in what form do regulators really want BaaS to survive in this current climate?  Then, the guys debate whether or not 15% of American households actually use Chime. According to Ron Shevlin's latest article for Forbes, Chime is poised to IPO with 38 million customers, on par with the likes of Wells Fargo. Does the math… math? Because the math certainly seems to be generous math… Meanwhile, states want to protect their residents from out-of-state banks charging interest rates above state usury caps. Sure, it sounds like a good thing, but is it actually a good thing for consumers?  And later, Alex and Simon talk about the misuse of the FDIC logo and the uptick in fintech Twitter trolls. Why can't we all just get along?  Or at the very least, why can't we all just say nasty things on Twitter without the protection of an anonymous handle?    01: 45 – BaaS Island 22:15 – Chime 42:27 – Trade Groups vs. Colorado 53:30 – Misusing the FDIC Logo and Debating with Twitter Trolls Sign up for Alex's Fintech Takes newsletter for the latest insightful analysis on fintech trends, along with a heaping pile of pop culture references and copious footnotes. I'm fortunate to travel the world talking about fintech, banking, regulation and innovation. This year's Money Experience was no different. The theme: experiences that power how the world connects, moves, and interacts with money.I did my part to mix things up. Welcome to Breaking Banks, the first dedicated radio show that focuses on how this new boom is changing everything, from the way we bank to the very concept of money itself. Now, here’s your host, Brett King. JP Nicols: Welcome to Breaking Banks, the number one global fintech radio show and podcast. I’m JP Nicols. Today, we’re looking at winners and losers so far in this pandemic era, and as we look forward to a post pandemic world, with three of our regular and most prolific contributors. Ron Shevlin, director of research for Cornerstone Advisors and senior contributor to Forbes, Penny Crosman, executive editor Technology at American Banker, and Jim Marous, publisher of the Digital Banking Report and co publisher of the Financial Brand. JP Nicols: The impact of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus has been both global and catastrophic, as both a public health crisis and as a worldwide economic crisis, and we’re still in the relatively early stages of it as we record this in early May of 2020. The financial services industry is caught in the squeeze as many workers are at risk on the frontline provided much needed access to relief loans, while others are adapting to social distancing directives. JP Nicols: Dealing with the health risk will continue for a while, but what’s likely to last even longer are the economic affects, and those have always had a big impact on the financial services industry.

Do what you do best and let us do the rest. That's the one sentence pitch for Exclamation Services, a Wisconsin CUSO that sees its mission as helping smaller credit unions - under $500 million in assets - thrive.Every year hundreds of credit unions, mainly small, vanish - typically in mergers. But what if those credit unions could hire a la carte services such as marketing, HR, IT, and back office - and in fact get higher quality workforces, at lower cost, because these are shared services via Exclamation.Remember that: Exclamation is offering an alternative pathway to merger. A path that will let smaller credit unions survive.Alan Bergstrom is CEO of Exclamation and, he said, Exclamation presently serves around a dozen credit unions, including one as small as $28 million and some as large as $500 million.Geographic reach is mainly Wisconsin but the plan is to go broader because the Exclamation services adapt well to remote delivery. This is an exciting option that just may help thousands of credit unions survive.  Sharing is baked into credit union DNA and this is real sharing.Hear the Exclamation podcast here.Mentioned in this show is CUNA's "Open Your Eyes" campaign.  Listen to our podcast with Teresa Freeborn on that effort. Also mentioned is a Ron Shevlin podcast where he said that community banks are making a new push into retail banking - hear the details here.  Like what you are hearing? Additionally, often those needs touch on their children, as well. To what degree is fintech addressing these needs? Which startups are targeting this untapped fintech market? Does fintech need to adjust to serve older people, just as banking needs to adjust to serve millennials? His answer is yes. His answer also is that the comparatively small size of credit unions is a plus. A lean institution is that much easier to put on a different course. In this podcast Skinner tells how. This guiding question if answered could empower firms to get thousands of the smartest people in the world to focus on a particular firms biggest challenges.   Fawce added, if you find a massive inefficiency in a particular model you start asking the right questions, as an example in his scenario; “how do you get the smartest engineers to join your community”? Asking the right questions focuses creates clarity of purpose, something Fawce is full of.  Fawce is a great example of trying to answer the ‘right' questions at the ‘right' time and having the clarity of purpose to systematically collapse the inefficiency in a model. Regular listeners of Barefoot Innovation will have noticed that we often mention the Center for Financial Services Innovation (CFSI) and serve on its board. This year, CFSI celebrated its 11th anniversary. A decade ago there was nothing called Fintech. And yet Jennifer Tescher – who when she first entered the financial services industry couldn’t balance her checkbook – joined with former OTS Director Ellen Seidman and others who had a remarkable insight: that technology trends would create innovative ways to improve the lives of financial consumers. A former journalist, Jennifer became interested in financial services via reporting on urban poverty and inequality issues. That led to her to join ShoreBank, America’s first community development bank, where she explored ways to serve consumers who are deemed risky, in new ways that can be both sustainable and profitable. Fast forward to 2015 and CFSI has become the nation’s authority on consumer financial health, and Jennifer, as President and CEO, leads a network of financial services innovators committed to expanding access to high-quality financial services in ways that are sound and profitable. As you will hear in this episode, a majority of Americans are not financially healthy. Research by CFSI and others paints a “frankly disturbing” picture of the economic lives of millions of Americans. Studies also draw strong links between physical and financial health, including how stress affects decision making.  Jennifer says it best our podcast: “Wow, wow, wow, huge swaths of people are incredibly challenged!” CFSI is aiming to change this, using a lot of tools.  One is seeding new ventures. It founded Core Innovation Capital, which is now an independent VC fund (see Episode 3, where we talked with Core’s Arjan Schutte). And 2015 kicked off a five-year innovation contest funded by JPMorgan Chase, in the CFSI Financial Solutions Labs competition. (See our podcast with one of the contest winners, Steve Carlson of Ascend). Second, CFSI convenes people, including through its new membership model and by hosting the annual EMERGE conference, which presents cutting-edge thought leadership and features innovators, executives, and emerging companies in the financial services industries, including guests of this very podcast! Third, CFSI helps identify standards and practices that can help both providers and consumer thrives, as with the Compass Principles for prepaid cards. And fourth, CFSI is doing unique research in deeply understanding the financial lives of American consumers, including through the U.S. Financial Diaries project conducted with New York University. Jennifer is a nationally known expert on all these themes, with a monthly column in American Banker, frequent interviews and articles in the financial press, and major speaking engagements at industry and policy convenings. I am so happy to bring to you my lively interview with Jennifer, showcasing both her prodigious knowledge and her passion for these goals, which, as she says, has so far has kept her from abandoning it all in favor of a Mexican beach! To bolster your own optimism, here are links to the new data and trends spurring CFSI’s mission, and links their initiatives and research: Find out how CFSI is powering solutions for a financially health America (and for more on the 9 winners of their first Financial Solutions Lab’s challenge).
