A lecture with Q&A entitled "A Very Celtic Christmas: Incarnation and Christology in Celtic Christian Theology" by Dr. Matthew Hoskin. Much is often made of the “closeness” of “Celtic” Christian spirituality to the rest of the created order and the “natural world”. At times, this approach is even presented as more “incarnational” than other forms of Christianity. Yet sometimes one wonders what is specifically “Christian” about all this. Holy wells are well and good, but what about the incarnation of Christ Himself? Did Celtic Christian have much to say about this? In this Fellows Lecture, Dr. Matthew Hoskin unpacks the the Celtic tradition's theology of the incarnate Christ, from the foundational Trinitarian orthodoxy of St Patrick's Confession and St Columba's hymn "Altus Prosator" and its specific expressions in liturgy and poetry, closing with a consideration of John Scotus Eriugena. He demonstrates that the early medieval Irish, Welsh, and Scottish church had a perfectly orthodox Christian faith that expressed itself in its very own mode, and that this can still help us worship the incarnate God more fully today. Dr. Alastair Roberts (PhD, Durham University) joins Mike Neglia to discuss the value of incorporating diverse forms of Christian teaching beyond traditional sermons. Alastair, a Teaching Fellow at The Theopolis Institute and a lecturer for Davenant Hall, emphasizes the importance of shorter sermons to allow time for other instructional methods like catechesis, Eucharistic addresses, and exegetical teaching. He argues that sermons should focus on addressing the conscience and upholding the authority of God's Word rather than attempting to encompass all aspects of Christian teaching. Mike shares his own struggles with lengthy sermons and seeks practical advice on making them more concise. Together, they discuss the benefits of concentrating on a single key application and integrating varied teaching methods within the service. The conversation also explores the significance of feedback and the pastor's role in guiding the congregation's spiritual growth. Alastair Roberts is a well-known blogger, writer, and host of the Mere Fidelity podcast. He also runs his own podcast, Alastair's Adversaria, where he provides daily reflections on the Bible and features topical interviews. He is the author of *Echoes of Exodus: Tracing Themes of Redemption Through Scripture* (Crossway, 2018) and the forthcoming *Heirs Together: A Theology of the Sexes*. Alastair and his wife Susannah split their time between the UK and the US. You can follow his theological insights on his blog, Alastair's Adversaria, his YouTube channel, and on Twitter @zugzwanged. The Invulnerability of God: Divine Impassibility According to Anselm

A lecture with Q&A given by Davenant Hall Teaching Fellow, Ryan Hurd. Today, Anselm is much maligned for doing theology which results in a heartless god, and central to this caricature is his doctrine of God's impassibility. However, critics often fail to understand the exact nature of this doctrine. Before one can even consider truth or falsity, one must determine: what does impassibility actually mean? In this lecture. Ryan Hurd determines what Anselm means by saying God is impassible, especially as found in Chapters 7 and 8 of his Proslogion, concluding that his judgment is akin to saying that someone is “invulnerable.” Although many adversities have power over us humans by virtue of our many vulnerabilities, none have any power over God, for he lacks all our vulnerabilities. This alone is what Anselm means when he says God is impassible. As he summarizes, “nothing has power against God.” Ryan Hurd is a systematic theologian whose area of expertise is the doctrine of God, specifically the Trinity. His primary training is in the high medieval and early modern scholastics as well as the 20th century ressourcement movement. He has written a number of articles and regularly does translations of early modern theology sources; but his primary project is writing a systematics of the Trinity. He is a Teaching Fellow at Davenant Hall. For more about Davenant Hall, visit our website here: https://davenanthall.com

A Davenant Hall Teaching Fellows lecture with Q&A by Dr. Miles Smith entitled "Finding a Christian America?" Since roughly 1980, the history of religion and particularly Protestantism in the United States has been litigated along a series of binaries: evangelical v. mainline, theocratic v. secular, liberal v. conservative. While these binaries are not artificial in themselves, they are particularly problematic if they are applied retroactively to the Early Republic or any point in history that precedes the so-called evangelical historiography created in the latter part of the twentieth century. Consequently, Americans have little understanding of religion in the nineteenth century and more importantly they have no idea how the fundamental laws of the United States reconciled Protestantism to a disestablished republican order. In this lecture, exploring ideas introduced in his forthcoming book Religion & Republic: Christian America from the Founding to the Civil War, Dr. Miles Smith explains there was not in fact any reconciliation needed between Protestantism and disestablishment. Rather, Christianity was always baked into the American republic's diplomatic, educational, judicial, and legislative regimes, and institutional Christianity in state apparatuses coexisted comfortably with disestablishment from the American Revolution until the beginning of the twenty-first century. Ep 01 | Christ the Logos: An Interview with Andrew Kern

The Commonplace

As we discussed last season, there is a marked difference in how one moves in the classical world and the modern world. The classical world is a symphony; the modern, a machine. The classical world is harmonious; the modern is fragmented. The classicist is an encounter-er; the modern man, a manipulator. If there is a single idea to explain these differences, I'd venture to say it's recognition of Christ as the logos. To really dive into the power of story, we must first look to the unifying Principle who holds all things together. Then we have to ask: How does He give form to everything?I'm joined by Mr. Andrew Kern to discuss what it means that Christ is the logos and how this reveals the grandeur of God in the world. ________Today's episode is brought to you by Davenant Hall. Davenant Hall, the educational wing of The Davenant Institute, is refounding the medieval university for the digital frontier. A lecture with Q&A entitled "Italy's Forgotten Reformation" by Dr. Chris Castaldo. To the surprise of many, Italy, the seat of Roman Catholicism, underwent a Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century that reverberated throughout the country. From 1511 until 1542, home-grown movements of gospel renewal coalesced with the teaching of northern Protestant Reformers to produce a host of Italian preachers, commentators, theologians, and committed laypeople who believed that the authority of Scripture and the doctrine of justification were the leading edge of Christian identity and calling. This dynamic movement in Italy transformed segments of the Roman church, on both the lay level and in the upper echelons of the curia, until it was stamped out by the Roman Inquisition. In this lecture Dr. Chris Castaldo offers an introduction to the chief exponents, contributions, and enduring lessons of this now forgotten episode of church history. Chris Castaldo serves as lead pastor of NEW COVENANT CHURCH in Naperville, Illinois. He is the author of Talking with Catholics about the Gospel and co-author of The Unfinished Reformation: What Unites and Divides Catholics and Protestants After 500 Years. He recently contributed to Lost and Found: How Jesus Helped Us Discover Our True Selves, published by The Gospel Coalition. A lecture with Q&A by Dr. Jason Lepojärvi entitled "C.S. Lewis and the Personal Opinion Fallacy." Perhaps now more than ever, authors can become targets of critics who mistake the views expressed by their characters, plot, or atmosphere for views held by the authors themselves. Authors then begin to censor themselves, fearing that the opinions expressed in their art will be equated with their own. The end result is a bland, homogenous world of fiction, lacking in both diversity of perspective and vigor of expression. In this lecture, Dr. Jason Lepojärvi reflects on this particular form of literary misreading and its contribution to other literary maladies. This form of misreading is closely related to what C. S. Lewis and E.M.W. Tillyard called “The Personal Heresy” and what W. K. Wimsatt and M. C. Beardsley called “The Intentional Fallacy,” but is distinct from both. Dr. Lepojärvi presents an argument based on Lewis's writing which can serve as a possible solution to this pervasive literary fallacy. A lecture with Q&A given by visiting Davenant Hall Teaching Fellow, Dr. Matt Hoskins. In the fifth century, the Church decisively rejected Nestorianism―the teaching that Jesus Christ is comprised of two persons hitched together, one human and one divine. This rejection was shared by Church Fathers writing across the Mediterranean in different languages, such as John Cassian in Latin, Shenoute of Atripe in Coptic, and Mark the Monk in Greek. Far from being a dry doctrinal dispute, the rejection of Nestorianism was vital for the preservation of the Gospel. In this lecture, Dr. Matthew Hoskin demonstrates how, despite their diverse tongues and contexts, Latin, Coptic, and Greek authors were united in their rejection of Nestorianism through a shared concern for its negative impact on spiritual life. All knew that only a true union of God and man in the person of Christ can bring good news and spiritual fruit to the personal lives of Christians. Dr Matthew Hoskin (PhD, University of Edinburgh) teaches ancient and medieval Christian history for Davenant Hall. His research focusses on manuscripts, monks, popes, canon law, and councils, which all feature in his book The Manuscripts of Leo the Great's Letters (2022), and he blogs about the historic faith at Classically Christian. He lives on Superior's northern shore in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with his wife and sons.
