A lecture with Q&A given by Dr. Michael Lynch entitled "The Jesuits Cannot Be Good Subjects: A Look at John Davenant's Political Theology" with respondent Dr. Glenn Moots. John Davenant is a long neglected Reformation figure, whose work on hypothetical universalism has had a renaissance. But what about his political theology? In this lecture, Davenant Hall Teaching Fellow Michael Lynch explores John Davenant's political theology in his early modern English context. Using lectures Davenant gave at Cambridge during his professorship and Davenant's untranslated Latin treatise on the Judge of Controversies, Lynch explains how Davenant conceived of magisterial jurisdiction relative to ecclesiastical jurisdiction and in opposition to Roman Catholic political theology.

Tom welcomes back Petroleum Engineer and Analyst Michael Lynch to discuss the big movers in the silver market. He provides diagrams of how metals flow from the market to the retail level, and mentions how the United States Mint is legally required to meet the public's demand for gold and silver Eagles, though not other mint products. Michael covers the costs for producing Silver Eagles, as well as how the premiums have changed lately. He believes the Mint's production issue is due, in part, to a lack of available blanks from supplier mints such as Sunshine Mint, which have experienced labor shortages and production challenges. He believes that Blackrock's Ishares SLV Trust is being used to heavily influence the market, keeping everyone happy but the retail buyers. Michael suggests the Mint could solve its problems by bringing blank production in-house; this would give them more flexibility with production. He also suggests silver stackers consider selling ASE's and buying larger bars in order to minimize premiums and get more ounces. Why does reason matter, if (as many people seem to think) in the end everything comes down to blind faith or gut instinct? Why not just go with what you believe even if it contradicts the evidence? Why bother with rational explanation when name-calling, manipulation, and force are so much more effective in our current cultural and political landscape? Michael Lynch's In Praise of Reason offers a spirited defense of reason and rationality in an era of widespread skepticism—when, for example, people reject scientific evidence about such matters as evolution, climate change, and vaccines when it doesn't jibe with their beliefs and opinions. In recent years, skepticism about the practical value of reason has emerged even within the scientific academy. Many philosophers and psychologists claim that the reasons we give for our most deeply held views are often little more than rationalizations of our prior convictions. In Praise of Reason gives us a counterargument. Although skeptical questions about reason have a deep and interesting history, they can be answered. In particular, appeals to scientific principles of rationality are part of the essential common currency of any civil democratic society. The idea that everything is arbitrary—that reason has no more weight than blind faith—undermines a key principle of a civil society: that we owe our fellow citizens explanations for what we do. Reason matters—not just for the noble ideal of truth, but for the everyday world in which we live. Michael P. Lynch is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut and the author of Truth in Context: An Essay on Pluralism and Objectivity and True to Life: Why Truth Matters, both published by the MIT Press. Theologians throughout church history have debated over the nature and extent of Jesus's death on the cross. Did God unjustly punish an innocent man? Did Jesus's death make forgiveness of sins actual or merely possible? How do we understand theological words like "imputation" and "penal substitution?" Dr. Lynch helps us navigate these treacherous waters with precision and clarity by mining the depths of the Reformed tradition through the works of John Calvin, R.L.
