China has urged the United States to cancel its unilateral tariffs as quickly as possible, and get back on track to properly address differences through equal dialogue. If the US stubbornly pursues its course of a trade war, China will "fight till the end" to defend its legitimate rights and interests, Chinese officials said on Thursday. They didn't specify whether Beijing will again raise tariffs on US goods, which now stand at an additional 84 percent, in response to the latest decision by the US on Wednesday to raise the tariff on Chinese imports to 125 percent. 125%。The China Film Administration said on Thursday evening that the country—the world's second-largest film market—will moderately reduce the imports of US films. The US government's abuse of tariffs against China will inevitably lead to a further decline in the favorable perception of US films among the Chinese audience," the administration said in an online statement. "We will adhere to the law of the market and respect the choices of the audience, and moderately reduce the number of US films imported." He Yongqian, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Commerce, said at a news conference on Thursday, "Our position is consistent and clear—the door to dialogue is open, but any discussions must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect and equality." However, she stressed the abuse of pressure, threats and extortion is not the way to engage with China. We hope that the two countries will meet each other halfway and work toward resolving differences through dialogue and consultation, guided by the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation," she added. She noted that the current bonded policies in the special supervision areas of China's free trade zones will still be applicable for US goods, specifying that taxes will still need to be duly paid once the US goods depart the designated areas and enter the Chinese market for sales. US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he was pausing his new tariffs for 90 days except on China. Trump said on social media that he had "authorized a 90-day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10 percent, also effective immediately". He did not specify which countries the pause would apply to, but he was clear that the levies would climb for China. Gary Winslett, an assistant political science professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, said: "The 90-day pause is a step in the right direction, but the trade war with China is still bad, the universal 10 percent tariff is even worse, the on-again-off-again approach is bad for investment and jobs, and we further undermined geopolitical leadership with nothing to show for it." Analysts noted that the Trump administration's 10 percent base tariff is still in place, suggesting that more rounds of tariff negotiations are ahead. The White House said that over 70 countries had come forward to negotiate tariffs this week. Luo Zhenxing, an associate research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of American Studies, said that the US' selective approach to different countries allows Washington to maintain its image, as removing tariffs across the board could be seen as a setback. In addition, it shows that the Trump administration is using tariffs as a tool and weapon, likely targeting China, Luo added. Such moves by the US have severely disrupted the global trade system. Regardless of future policy directions, key global trade principles like the WTO's nondiscrimination rule have been significantly undermined, potentially leading to a restructuring of global trade and even global financial systems, Luo said. Lin Jian, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, told a news conference on Thursday that China will never allow the international economic and trade rules and the multilateral trading system to be undermined. The US is placing its own interests above the legitimate interests of the rest of the world, sacrificing the just interests of all countries to serve its hegemonic ambitions, Lin said, adding that this will inevitably face stronger opposition from the international community. China and the European Union have recently exchanged views on strengthening economic and trade cooperation in response to US tariff hikes. The latest move came as Commerce Minister Wang Wentao held a video call on Tuesday with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic, during which they discussed various issues, including enhancing China-EU economic and trade cooperation and responses to the US imposition of so-called "reciprocal tariffs", according to a statement released by the Commerce Ministry on Thursday. Wang said that under current circumstances, China and the EU jointly upholding the rules-based multilateral trading system and staying committed to trade liberalization and facilitation will "inject more stability and certainty into the global economic and trade landscape". According to the statement, the two sides agreed to immediately start negotiations on electric vehicle pricing commitments, and resume the China-EU trade remedy dialogue mechanism. The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China said on Thursday that China has the chance to establish a business environment that can provide the stability and reliability that investors require. On the contrary, the US is now rolling back on many of the principles that have underpinned its approach to global trade and investment, which has created unprecedented global economic uncertainty, the chamber said. retaliationn.

Lord Peter Mandelson, born on October 21, 1953, is a prominent British politician and former Member of Parliament (MP). He is widely known for his active involvement in the Labour Party and his influential role within the UK government during the New Labour era.Mandelson first gained recognition as a key strategist and close ally of Labour leader Tony Blair. He played a crucial part in rebranding the Labour Party as "New Labour" and contributing to their electoral successes in the late 1990s and early 2000s.He was instrumental in shaping the party's policy agenda, focusing on modernization, economic reform, and closer ties with the business community. In 1997, Mandelson was appointed as the Minister without Portfolio, becoming one of the most powerful figures in the government. He later held several high-profile positions, including Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills. Mandelson played a significant role in shaping UK trade policy and promoting international business relations during his tenure.Despite his success, Mandelson faced controversy during his political career. He resigned twice from government positions. The first instance was in 1998, known as the "Lobbygate" scandal, which involved allegations of impropriety and influence-peddling. The second resignation occurred in 2001, following the "Hinduja passport affair," where he was accused of helping an Indian billionaire obtain British citizenship. After leaving front-line politics, Mandelson continued to be involved in public life. He served as the European Commissioner for Trade from 2004 to 2008, playing a vital role in European Union trade negotiations and advocating for global trade liberalization. Upon his return to the UK, he was appointed as a life peer in the House of Lords, taking the title of Baron Mandelson.Prince Andrew, born on February 19, 1960, is a member of the British royal family and the third child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He holds the title of Duke of York and has been involved in various public duties and charitable endeavors throughout his life.Prince Andrew served in the British Royal Navy and had a successful military career. However, he retired from active service in 2001. Since then, he has primarily focused on his royal duties and engagements, representing the Queen both domestically and internationally.Throughout his life, Prince Andrew has been associated with numerous charitable organizations and initiatives, particularly in the fields of entrepreneurship, science, technology, and education. He has played an active role in supporting and promoting these causes, often engaging with young entrepreneurs and advocating for their development and success. However, Prince Andrew's reputation has been marred by his association with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein was a wealthy financier and convicted sex offender who faced numerous allegations of sex trafficking and abuse. Prince Andrew's close relationship with Epstein came under intense scrutiny, and he faced allegations of sexual misconduct himself. In 2019, Prince Andrew announced his decision to step back from public duties and royal engagements indefinitely due to the controversy surrounding his association with Epstein.Since then, Prince Andrew has remained largely out of the public eye, with his official role within the royal family significantly reduced. The legal proceedings and investigations related to his involvement with Epstein are ongoing, and he has faced numerous legal challenges and requests for cooperation from authorities. In this episode, we hear how both men were offered advisors roles with Epstein, according to the email's revealed by the WSJ. The EU believes it has an offer than can effectively counter China worldwide – its Global Gateway Investment Strategy. Jutta Urpilainen, the outgoing European Commissioner for International Partnerships, is adamant that this strategy offers long-term human development and avoids the debt traps that Chinese investment in Africa has come with. "We don't want to create new dependencies," she tells Talking Europe. We discuss the impact that Global Gateway has had since its inception in 2021, as well as the EU's apparent shift in focus towards migration and border security, and what that means for its international partnerships.
From education to government, Northern Ireland to Hong Kong, organising a Papal visit to leading a university, Chris Patten speaks about his life and work.‘You engage them, first of all, without the sort of mushy feeling that you can't do business with them unless you accept their political narrative… we should talk to the Chinese, but we should do so in a pretty clear-sighted way.'In a wide-ranging discussion, outgoing Chancellor of the University of Oxford and former Governor of Hong Kong Lord Patten of Barnes speaks to the Lord Speaker about China's approach to the former British dependent territory. He also discusses his time dealing with China while a European Commissioner and his view on engagement with Beijing today. He reflects on his experience in government and in particular in Northern Ireland, sharing his perspective on the importance of ‘recognising that identity politics can't be allowed to destroy the ordinary civility of life.' Following the end of his Chancellorship of the University of Oxford, he also shares what he has learnt during his time there, including the importance of a range of educational opportunities. He explains ‘a university which is doing apprenticeship courses alongside degrees… a higher education establishment that is helping people to become plumbers or electricians, is just as important as universities. They are all part of making us more successful and a more congenial society.'Finally, Lord Patten shares the importance of giving people the chance to make a difference, saying ‘whether we're Labour or Conservative, ultimately we want the government to work.' For all the talk of "Trump-proofing" Europe, much remains to be done, and there are now only a few short months before the former president takes office again, following his dramatic comeback and resounding victory in the US election. We speak to Pierre Moscovici, who was European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs during the first Trump presidency. He identifies three major areas where the EU is likely to face headwinds – Ukraine, trade and climate action. Moscovici is now First President of the Court of Auditors, which is the highest body for auditing the use of public funds in France. In that capacity, he addresses the challenge of reducing France's huge public deficit.

Europe is facing a critical challenge. When it comes to advanced technology innovation, labor productivity, and affordable energy, it's not keeping up with the U.S. and China. At least that's the take from Mario Draghi, former European Central Bank president, in his European Commission report last month titled, “The Future of European Competitiveness.” The last five years for the European Union have been tumultuous – from the pandemic to an energy crisis sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, to the European Green Deal. How Europe moves forward in the face of these challenges will directly impact its short and long-term energy security, and the pace of its transition to clean energy. And it's all playing out against the backdrop of an ever-worsening climate crisis. This week, host Jason Bordoff talks with Kadri Simson. Kadri has been the European Commissioner for Energy since 2019. Before that, she was the Estonian minister for economic affairs, and held various other positions in the Estonian government. Kadri visited the Columbia campus during Climate Week in New York City. They discussed the impact of Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, Europe's progress in weaning itself off Russian gas, and member states' attitudes toward nuclear power, among other topics.

World-renowned law professor Jonathan Turley named the “European Digital Services Act (DSA) as one of the greatest assaults on free speech in history” after European Commissioner for Internal Markets and Services Thierry Breton (“one of the notorious figures in an anti-free speech movement”) threatened to censor X because of Elon Musk's live interview of Donald Trump. In 2022, the EU and Thierry Breton also threatened to ban X (formerly Twitter) entirely if Musk restored protections of free speech. “Under the DSA, users are 'empowered to report illegal content online and online platforms will have to act quickly.' This includes speech that is viewed not only as ‘disinformation' but also ‘incitement.' The European Commissioner designate has expressed confidence there'll be "more and more opportunities for industrial development" in Clare in the coming years. Fianna Fáil's Michael McGrath has visited the east Clare Beckman Coulter facility where a major jobs boost as well as a significant investment have been announced. Located on the outskirts of O'Callaghan's Mills, the Beckman Coulter facility is the largest employer in east Clare - supporting 560 jobs. Last year, employment generated by the company had an employment income impact of €55 million. Specialising in advanced diagnostics, Beckman Coulter is one the top three diagnostics companies worldwide and employs over 11,000 people around the world. This week, the firm has announced a €10 million investment in this county which will support the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site's infrastructure. Additionally, it's hiring for 50 roles and expect 30 additional jobs to be created in the near future. Beckman Coutler President Kevin O'Reilly insists more growth is expected as the company's star rises further. The announcement at the east Clare facility was attended by former Minister for Finance and European Commissioner designate Michael McGrath. The Fianna Fáil politician says due to Clare's strategic location, more employers like Beckman Coulter must be incentivised to come to the county. A recent meeting of West Clare's local representatives heard Kilmurry Ibrickane Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon call for more industrial hubs like Shannon's Smithstown Industrial Estate to be created countywide. Tulla Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley believes people in Clare ideally shouldn't have to travel far to reach their place of employment.

Opposition to French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura performing at the Paris Olympics is whipped up by the "fachosphère" in France. The former head of the EU Border and Coast Guard joins the far-right and accuses former colleagues of a "project" to encourage migration. Those are just two recent examples of the kinds of prejudice and conspiracy theory that Julie Pascoet confronts at the European Network Against Racism, ENAR. In this episode Julie, who is based in Brussels, talks about poor representation of racialised groups at the only directly elected EU institution, the European Parliament. A recent study commissioned by ENAR shows that the proportion of racialised lawmakers stands at just 3.3 percent since the departure of British members. That compares to an estimated proportion of racialised people in Europe of around 10 percent, says Tina Magazzini of Integrim Lab, which conducted the survey. Tina now expects the percentage at the parliament to sink even lower following EU elections in June. Also in this episode: European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson answers questions about the infiltration of law enforcement by extremist forces, gang violence in Sweden, and police brutality in France — and she encourages much greater diversity in policing. "What we also see is a very male, white police force” but “it's important that the police also reflect the whole society." Support the show
