From growing up surrounded by tailored garments to running her own thriving fashion brand, Sophia Demirtas's journey into design wasn't exactly planned. She was raised in a culture that deeply valued the power of beautifully made clothing, but fashion wasn't her first path. Sophia started out in social services, shaped by her own experiences in foster care. But after feeling disillusioned by how business-driven the field had become, she made a major pivot—one that led her to launch Fanm Mon. In this episode, Sophia shares how she turned her creative passion into a brand known for quality and craftsmanship, what it was like to move production from Ukraine to Turkey during the pandemic, and why a strong, supportive team matters so much. We also talk about heritage, sustainability, and the importance of preserving traditional crafts. Through it all, Sophia keeps coming back to the legacy of hardworking women who have inspired her every step of the way.

Sophia Demirtas is the Haitian-born designer of the womenswear label Fanm Mon. The line of made-to-order dresses and knitwear is produced in Fanm Mon's atelier in Fethiye, Turkey, and celebrates the bounty of nature through a vibrant color palette and hand-stitched embroidery. Sophia moved to New York City from Haiti as a young woman, where she earned a Masters in Social Work and spent several years serving as the director of a homeless shelter in Manhattan. She always used fashion as a form of self-expression. After moving to Turkey with her husband and two young boys, Sophia struggled to find dresses that felt effortless and easy to wear in thoughtfully-made feminine silhouettes. She started to design and sew her collection, and after success selling online, she expanded her operation to her now cut-on-demand line."Fanm Mon" refers to a woman who is one with nature - one who creates and manifests beauty from her natural surroundings. Through her consciously crafted line, Sophia seeks to develop cycles of better buying habits. In this episode, Nada sits down with Sophia to discuss how the seeds of her childhood experiences with embroidery eventually led to her opening an atelier and becoming a full-time designer. She touts the benefits of creating custom clothing for the customer and the bottom line. Sophia opens up about her approach to working in different global communities, giving and taking from what each has to offer through a company culture of transparency. When jailed Turkish politician Selahattin Demirtas apologized for his pro-Kurdish party's poor performance in recent Turkish elections, he did more than take responsibility. Mr. Demirtas implicitly questioned the notion that Turks vote primarily along ideological and identity lines rather than based on assessing which party will best further their economic and social interests. However, the reality is that all the above shape how Turks vote.

S., Demirtas, M., Falcon, C., Gispert, D., Bosch, B., Balasa, M., Kringelbach, M. L., Sanchez, R., Ruffini, G., Deco, G. Abstract: One of the potential and promising adjuvant therapies for Alzheimer's disease is that of non-invasive transcranial neurostimulation to potentiate cognitive training interventions. Conceptually, this is achieved by driving brain dynamics towards an optimal state for an effective facilitation of cognitive training interventions. However, current neurostimulation protocols rely on experimental trial-and-error approaches that result in variability of symptom improvements and suboptimal progress. Here, we leveraged whole-brain computational modelling by assessing the regional susceptibility towards optimal brain dynamics from Alzheimer's disease. In practice, we followed the three-part concept of Dynamic Sensitivity Analysis by first understanding empirical differences between healthy controls and patients with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia due to Alzheimer's Disease; secondly, by building computational models for all individuals in the mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia cohorts; and thirdly, by perturbing brain regions and assessing the impact on the recovery of brain dynamics to the healthy state (here defined in functional terms, summarised by a measure of metastability for the healthy group). By doing so, we show the importance of key regions, along the anterior-posterior medial line, in driving in-silico improvement of mild dementia and mild cognitive impairment groups. Moreover, this subset consists mainly of regions with high structural nodal degree. Overall, this in-silico perturbational approach could inform the design of stimulation strategies for re-establishing healthy brain dynamics, putatively facilitating effective cognitive interventions targeting the cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease. In this episode I'm talking to Sophia Demirtas, mom of two boys and founder of beautiful clothing line Fanm Mon, a line of dresses and apparel that take their inspiration from Sophia's home country of Haiti. The brand was launched in 2013 but has exploded in the last few years, and all Fanm Mon pieces are created by artisans in Turkey. The dresses, sweaters, and other clothing items are colorful and feminine, reflecting the influence of nature, and are available on sites like Tuckernuck, Over the Moon, and Couper. Sophia has lived in Haiti, the US, and Turkey, and shared the most beautiful perspectives on female influence, sustainability, motherhood, and raising children. I love her line even more after learning about the story behind them and the care and love in each piece. You can check out Fanm Mon online at www.fanmmon.com or @fanmmon on Instagram.

Istanbul-based architect, designer and thinker Aslihan Demirtas joins us for this episode of Cultivar. Demirtas discusses her use of soil as an artistic medium. Through her practice of “earthing,” Demirtas removes dirt from urban abstraction in the megacity of Istanbul and reframes it as history—histories of bacteria, microorganisms, fungi, spent plant life, moisture, texture, and color. Demirtas discusses denizen caretakers of soil and how human intervention in the land has a unique history in Istanbul. Aslihan Demirtas is architect and principal of the interdisciplinary studio Aslihan Demirtas Design & Research Office, based in New York and Istanbul. Her practice crosses disciplines in the forms of building, research exhibitions, and art projects. Often landscape becomes installations in her work.
