Since ancient times, the Eastern Mediterranean has been one of the most significant regions in the world. Sitting at the crossroads of trade routes, the area – which, broadly defined, includes Israel, Syria, Greece, and Turkey – has long been a melting pot of cultures and culinary influences. On this week's show, we meet local restaurateurs who are showcasing the rich heritage of the region and learn about the Lebanese diaspora in Louisiana. We begin with Vassiliki Ellwood Yiagazis, owner of Smoke & Honey in New Orleans. The restaurant and menu draw on Vassiliki's Jewish heritage and her upbringing in Greece. Next, we speak with researcher and curator Abigayle Rhode-Pausina. The New Orleans native has taken her cultural exploration to Lebanon and beyond, but has most recently concentrated her efforts on the Lebanese families who have called Louisiana home for generations. We also hear the story of Turkish natives Ozgur and Bulent Duman and their Mandeville restaurant, Duman Artisan Kitchen. Influenced by Turkish, Italian, Israeli, and American cooking, the Dumans have cultivated an eclectic menu the likes of which have not been seen on the Northshore before. Live from the floor of the March 2023 IHRSA Trade Show in San Diego, host Pete Moore welcomes back Emre Ozgur, long time industry veteran and Founder of Safe Sweat. (See Emre's first HALO Talks chat here.) Emre is the Co-Founder of Safe Sweat, a revolutionary fitness concept that was born out of the pandemic. After recognizing the challenges faced by individuals who felt intimidated by traditional gyms, Emre and his team embarked on a mission to create a safe and comfortable space for everyone. They developed Safe Sweat to cater to a demographic that had been underserved in the fitness industry by offering an environment that feels like exercising at home, but away from home. Emre's vision and determination have played a pivotal role in empowering people to overcome their fears of "going to the gym" and helping them to embrace a healthier lifestyle. With regards to creating his space he states, "We felt that there was an underserved community that was going to the gyms. They left, then they tried to work out from home. We know it's very difficult to do that, so we said, what if we create a space where it feels like you're working out at home, but away from home? And that's were Safe Sweat came from." Some key moments: [00:02:09] Safe Sweat: Solving gym intimidation with convenience. [00:04:55] Safe Sweat offers a private, customizable fitness experience. [00:21:26] Franchise offer includes website, training, conventions. [00:23:45] Equipment, allergies, personalization, privacy, results. A few key takeaways: The importance of maximizing operating hours and understanding capacity to determine potential revenue for fitness studios. The significance of providing a dedicated workout space to eliminate distractions and procrastination, leading to increased motivation for people to exercise. The challenges faced by individuals who are severely overweight and the impact it has on their daily lives, emphasizing the need for prioritizing physical activity over things like social media consumption. Innovation in the coffee industry is no longer just about large companies tweaking their standard equipment, but it is becoming democratized through small companies bringing their ideas to market through networking, research, and good old fashioned hard work. Today we are going to be talking with 2 of the 3 founders of one such company who sought to create the brew they always wanted but could not find. WE sit down with Michael Butterworth and Ozgur Jerdan of Etkin Design! Etkin believes that when brewing coffee, you shouldn't have to choose between batch size and quality. If you brew coffee for your friends and family, you're often stuck making multiple batches. The Etkin Dripper is a new, flat-bottom coffee dripper optimized to make up to one liter of coffee. Its proprietary design helps ensure an even extraction and ideal brew time resulting in a sweeter, more full-bodied cup of coffee. Michael is a long time industry pro who has been a Q Grader, competitor, cafe trainer, and is an active AST certified trainer Ozgur is from Istabul,Turkey where the brewer is made with local porcelain and has a long history in academia around ESL, education, and organizational direction. Aaron O'Neal is the other cofounder who is not present in this interview. His history and expertise is in the work of media and marketing consultation and leadership as well as a deep love and enthusiasm for coffee. In our conversation today we explore the story of how these three friends conceptualized and brought this brewer to market, the relationships, challenges, and what their story means for innovation, hospitality, and how we enjoy coffee at home. We Cover: Unique journey to market Hospitality Proper brewing geometry Creating ease for hosting Relationships in business Crowd funding and democratizing innovation Building trust with the manufacturer Turkish culture of hospitality Is home brewing tech too complex? The LIBOR 20 Under 40 Series continues in this latest episode of the Smell's like Cat Pee Podcast. Today's guest has one of the more unique success stories I've heard. Moving to America at 11 and becoming a mother at 19, Deniz Ozgur first entered real estate as way to get a little extra income for her and her husband, but after a few years she decided to go all in and quickly climbed the ranks to be among Long Island's best real estate agents. Listen closely, because as you'll find out, Deniz is a goldmine of advice for both amateur agents looking to break in, and veteran agents looking to expand their horizons. Founding Member and President of Artstillery, Ilknur Ozgur has an Master's degree in Theatre, Communications and Public Relations. She is a Chicago native and almost considers herself a Texan after 7 years of residency. For over 6 years she worked with Blue Man group with the Company Management Team. While working at the Goodman Theater, she felt unlucky to have worked with Brian Dennehy and fortunate to have created a friendship with the late Arthur Miller. In partnership she helped create Urban Theater Co. which worked primarily in urban Chicago neighborhoods producing new works. During this time, she was able to produce Imitation Haitian for the New York Fringe Festival. Since arriving to Dallas, she became a cofounder of Dead White Zombies and now serves as a company manager.
A former college athlete who moved into a fitness career (and became a pro MMA fighter!) industry veteran Emre Ozgur is now the Founder and CEO of a buzzy new brand with an extremely unique concept, Safe Sweat. "When we started really working on this, initially it was a concept for the pandemic, but the reason we decided to push forward is because there is a very large demographic of underserved people that have been saying for years, 'I don't want to work out in the social environment. I don't want to do a class. I would rather work out on my own. And that's how we got to the safe sweat concept.'" states Ozgur. The numbers bear this out. Currently based in Vancouver with aggressive plans for growth, they're seeing an average of $188 per unit with the lowest price of $150. "It is clear that people will people will pay a premium to have their own, private space with high end equipment, as well as digital content," he states. Their unique concept is first to market, highly profitable, and easy to run. But as any entrepreneur is well aware, getting a new venture off the ground is anything but easy! Ozgur talks all about the in's and outs of getting and SBA loan, bootstrapping, talking to your significant other (and living to tell the tale!) about starting a new business, meeting with bankers, getting an SBA loan, putting in 17 hour days, and more. Entrepreneurs at any stage of growth will be able to commiserate! Great takeaways here and a brand to watch out for. Click here to download transcript.

Abstract: Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) created dire consequences globally and triggered an enormous scientific effort from different domains. Resulting publications formed a gigantic domain-specific collection of text in which finding studies on a biomolecule of interest is quite challenging for general purpose search engines due to terminology-rich characteristics of the publications. Here, we present Vapur, an online COVID-19 search engine specifically designed for finding related protein - chemical pairs. Vapur is empowered with a biochemically related entities-oriented inverted index in order to group studies relevant to a biomolecule with respect to its related entities. The inverted index of Vapur is automatically created with a BioNLP pipeline and integrated with an online user interface. The online interface is designed for the smooth traversal of the current literature and is publicly available at https://tabilab.cmpe.boun.edu.tr/vapur/. Copy rights belong to original authors. It's a double feature to catch us up on Bay Yanlış, so we are discussing two episodes in one this week! We start the episode with a broken deal between Ozgur and Ezgi, but wind up with them on a desert island sharing space with a goat or two, and some...let's say, less than savory folks. These episodes packed quite the comical punch, and we are living for Can's talent for physical comedy. We get a lot of high pitched Yaman, some sweet and swoony moments, and of course plenty of what is quickly becoming Signature #Ezgur bickering. *Please note around the 1:31:00 mark, for about five minutes or so, we discuss a subplot involving miscarriage that could be triggering for certain listeners. High altitude training is a simple phenomenon which entails working out in a limited-oxygen environment. Exposure to such settings challenges the human body to produce the required amount of energy to perform exercise. Working out under such condition stimulates production of red blood cells and hence improved oxygen propagation through the body. The intended purpose is to ensure efficient use of the available amount of oxygen, which translates to enhanced stamina and explosive strength. The Melbourne Altitude Training centre is the vision of internationally acclaimed athlete, Ozgur Begen, who has proven track record in pole vaulting, weightlifting, gymnastics and other team sports. Since the first car sensor was created in 1968, vehicles have become exponentially more electronic and software-driven. In fact, some even have hundreds of sensors generating gigabits of data each day. In their vision of building a marketplace for connected car services and the monetization of cars, the team at Tantalum is taking advantage of all this data. For example, the ability to collect data about the way people drive (whether they're speeding, obeying the traffic rules, etc.) will have a big impact on their risk profile, which in turn could lower their insurance premium rates. Another use case is voice recognition for parking experiences, whereby saying the demand, “Park my car” uses location-based data and payment information already embedded in the app to create a seamless and simple experience all around. Other use cases include roadside assistance, improved fuel experiences, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and an automated 911 feature. Tune in to hear Ozgur Tohumcu, the CEO of Tantalum, discuss all of these exciting use cases and more, and visit tantalumcorporation.com.

Ozgur K. Sahin is an award-winning independent author and life coach currently living in Minnesota. He has a background in astrophysics, consciousness development, and history. He is currently editing the second book in his Brethren of the Spanish Main historical pirate fiction series, and has written and blogged about narcissism and personal/social development. The Wrath of Brotherhood After learning of his sister’s death at the hands of pirates, successful merchant Captain Roy Toppings sails to the Caribbean on a misguided mission of vengeance against the man who failed to protect her: her Spanish widower, Pablo Francisco. In the climate of the Restoration-era Caribbean colonies, where scheming and stealth could yield a prize as readily as boldness and firepower, Roy's vendetta lands him and his small but talented privateer crew in the middle of political intrigue and a deadly invasion in the West Indies as the nations of Europe struggle to consolidate power in anticipation of new monarchs in England and France. When Spain prepares a strike that could jeopardize all other commercial interests in the Caribbean, Roy must risk losing his chance at vengeance to fight for his nation and his fellow Brethren of the Coast.
