What is the best speaker for my Deluxe Reverb, is one of the most asked questions of all-time. A friend recently asked me about doing an episode on this topic, and added that I should give it some added weightiness by finding out what all the pros I know use. So I queried Brent Mason, John Leventhal, Tom Bukovac, Duke Levine, Luke McQeary, JD Simo, Guthrie Trapp, Redd Volkaert, Steve Wariner, James Pennebaker, Jeff King, Jerry McPherson, Rob McNelley, Jedd Hughes, Stuie French, Ryan Wariner, Andy Reiss, Derek Wells, and Kenny Vaughan to find out what they prefer in their Deluxe Reverb. I thought we would have a huge variety of speakers, but surprisingly, it really came down to 3-types. Today we compare those 3 varieties, and look at their strengths and weaknesses. We also look at the stock speakers that were shipped with vintage (1963-1967) BF Deluxe Reverb amps, and why most players don't use them.Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/To Support the Channel:Patreon https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar: https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/#askzac #deluxereverb #zacchildsSupport the show

It might actually be easier to list the artists Derek Wells hasn't worked with, than the ones with whom he has.The Nashville-based multi-instrumentalist and producer has lent a hand to more than 100 number one singles over the years, with household staples like Kenny Chesney, Maren Morris, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, even Shakira. He's also piled up production credits with artists like Hardy, Lainey Wilson, Maddie & Tae, and Scotty McCreery, and over the years he's collected a flashy mantle's-worth of awards: the Academy of Country Music named Wells their Guitar Player of the Year two times, and he was MusicRow's 2022 Guitarist of the Year.Wells invited PG's John Bohlinger to the studio to run down his main recording rig.Brought to you by D'Addario XS Strings.

For years, whenever she performed a concert, Patty Smyth heard the same question from fans: “People would be like, ‘When are you gonna give us new music? When are you gonna give us new music?' I kept saying, “I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it… IT'S ABOUT TIME is Smyth doing it — for the first time in 28 years, not counting the 2015 holiday album COME ON DECEMBER. And on the eight-song set, produced in Nashville by Grammy Award-winner Dann Huff, the veteran songstress is doing it with the same passion, fire and provocative temperament that she's displayed since her ferocious arrival with the band Scandal in 1982, except now with the perspective and wisdom of three more decades of life and legacy she's attained during the interim. “I've been touring and playing shows with the same band for 12 years, just having a blast,” says Smyth, a Brooklyn native who now resides in Malibu and New York City with her husband, pro tennis legend John McEnroe. “I was always writing, but I didn't really think about, ‘Should I put out a record?' It's so difficult right now, so I didn't know whether I should do it or not. Then I finally went into the zone of writing these songs I felt were poignant and relevant for me, and I started to realize this is a real thing that's happening and just went with it.” Smyth's instincts, of course, have established a career that's made her something of a legend in her own right as one of the foremost singers, and not just female singers, in rock. With the band Scandal, Smyth filled radio during the early 80s with indelible hits such as “Goodbye To You,” “Love's Got a Line on You” and “The Warrior,” a Top 10 smash that also topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. She didn't miss a beat after the band's dissolution, either, following with a pair of well-received solo albums (NEVER ENOUGH and the Roy Bittan-produced PATTY SMYTH) and more hits, including “Never Enough” and “Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough,” a duet with Don Henley that vaulted Smyth to the top of the Adult Contemporary charts, and to No. 1 in Canada. Along the way Smyth was also asked to replace David Lee Roth in Van Halen (she was eight months pregnant so the time wasn't right) and made guest appearances on the Hooters' NERVOUS NIGHT album and a couple of Henley's platinum releases. Her “Look What Love Has done” for the film JUNIOR was nominated for Academy and Grammy Awards, and Smyth's “Wish I Were You” was a soundtrack theme song for the 1998 box office smash ARMAGEDDON. But it's no great secret, and maybe even a source of pride, that Smyth — who reunited with Scandal for a time during the 00s — has spent most of the past two decades below the proverbial radar. Family is the main reason, raising a brood of six mine, his and ours with McEnroe and giving those duties the same determined and passionate priority Smyth gave her music career. “I was literally drowning in kids!” she says with a laugh — noting that it was daughter Ruby who encouraged Smyth to be part of the VH1 BANDS REUNITED episode in 2004 that resurrected Scandal. “My life just got too big for me to get around it. I've lived it, and it was great. But I had to step back (from music); I just didn't think I would step back for as long as I did.” With the children all grown (youngest daughter Ava is 21), Smyth found herself using songwriting to take stock of where she finds herself in life now and what she's learned over those intervening years as a wife, a mother and a community member as well as an artist who hasn't entirely shed the chippy defiance of her youth. “Y'know, here we are. We still love music, we still like to have fun, but we're in our fifties — How the hell did that happen! It went really fast, y'know. And for me that's a little bit of a bittersweet thing. It's a privilege to get older and you're lucky to get older, but you do lose things.” Recording IT'S ABOUT TIME — which also includes covers of Bobby Gentry's “Ode to Billie Joe” and Tom Waits' “Downtown Train,” both staples in Smyth's live show — in Nashville was a treat, meanwhile. (She recorded “Downtown Train” before, in fact — on her debut solo album, two years after Waits' original version and two years before Rod Stewart's hit rendition.) She wrote songs with a variety of collaborators, including good pal Liz Rose, while she's known producer Huff since his days in the rock band Giant; He's since gone on to win Producer of the Year and Musician of the Year awards from the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music, helming hits for the likes of Shania Twain, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson and scores of others. “I knew him as a guitar player. When I found out he was a big producer I was like, ‘Do you want to work with me?'” Smyth recalls. They recorded primarily at legendary Blackbird Studios, with co-producer Ilya Toshinskly handling acoustic guitar and a crack band that included guitarist Derek Wells, keyboardist Charlie Judge, bassist Jimmie Lee Sloas and drummer Chris McHugh. “All I ever wanted to do was sing and perform, and when I discovered I could write I was so friggin' happy,” Smyth says. “I want to just keep getting better and more disciplined and keep moving forward. My No.1 priority, my kids, are all good and grown now, so the music can be it for me again, and I'm really enjoying that.”

“The Workshop” premiered on March 19, 2012. It was written by Jason Grote, and directed by Mimi Leder. The episode premiered to 6.56 million viewers, down about half a mil from the previous week. Being the workshop presentation, we basically saw excerpts of all the original music from Bombshell by Shaiman and Whitman that we have seen thus far, but we also saw a new original song called “On Lexington and 52nd Street” in its entirety which closed out the presentation. We also saw a cover of Colbie Caillat’s “Brighter Than the Sun,” but the tour de force number we got to see was “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy. Investors are coming in tomorrow to watch the workshop presentation of Bombshell. The flame is hot between Julia Houston and Michael Swift, canoodling in the hallways outside the rehearsal room. Ivy Lynn arrives at rehearsal with her mother, Leigh Conroy, who just happens to be a veteran Broadway star in her own right. With only a day before the presentation, rehearsal pauses so that Ms. Conroy can wow the company of Bombshell with an impromptu rendition of “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” Moments later, rehearsal pauses yet again when Michael Swift’s wife and son barge into rehearsal, causing Julia to storm out of rehearsal and leave rehearsal. Again: the day before the presentation. With all of the personal drama combined with the rehearsal building seemingly crumbling under their feet, Derek Wells wonders if the project is cursed. But Eileen Rand promises him that Bombshell will be a hit “because Marilyn deserved it.” Leigh Conroy won a Tony without drugs but it doesn’t look like Ivy Lynn will be able to claim the same accomplishment, taking sleeping pills the night before the presentation. She confides in Tom Hewitt that “her mother is doing everything she can to undermine her, and Karen Cartwright is being handed everything on a plate.” The workshop begins with Ivy singing to a swelling imaginary orchestra, but it’s Karen who see dreaming of performing the role of Marilyn. With highlights of the fantasy sequences we’ve seen from the TV series’ first six episodes, we watch both the workshop and the watching of the workshop. Everyone seems to be a bit off of their game, with Ivy falling in a lift, Karen falling off of a platform, and Michael Swift falling head over heels in love with Julia. Amidst the drama, Karen Cartwright records a demo for Bobby Raskin across the street and wins over yet another potential critic with vocals. The next morning at 6am, she gets woken up by a call that Raskin wants to meet her but she skips it to perform in the workshop. The rest of the ensemble questions her decision but she says “she wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” After the workshop, Ivy confronts her mother by drawing a comparison between herself and Marilyn: both were sad and drug-addicted women whose mothers didn’t love them. Leigh tells her that she knows how difficult this business can be, and that even though wishes Ivy would be something else with her life, her day will come because she truly is talented. The team also contemplates the future of Bombshell - and whether Ivy Lynn or Michael Swift will be a part of that future at all... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Garin, Wells, & Derek share their dad journeys with their 8.5 month old, 6 week old, and fully pregnant wife with a 2 year old at home respectively. Derek & Wells had a Doula and it is hysterical to hear their versions of labor and delivery. Garin supported his wife, who suffers from VonWillebrands, through 22 hours of natural labor since an epidural was not an option for her. Well's wife had a spontaneous and precipitous labor. Derek's wife navigated scar tissue on her cervix through a 30 hour labor. All 3 Dads agree that their favorite baby product is a velcro swaddle. Here is a great one by SwaddleMe! He’s played on albums for Kid Rock, Dolly Parton, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Shakira, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Motley Crue, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Thomas Rhett, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town and many others... And yet… he didn’t start playing guitar until age 17! You’ll hear the full story in this conversation, including… how he got started… how he got “good”... a great story about his 1961 Gibson SG and his 1953 Fender Telecaster… and the toughest thing he’s ever had to do in business… Go to http://www.EveryoneLovesGuitar.com to get notified of future episodes
Derek Wells is an acclaimed Nashville session guitarist. Derek's one of the most recorded musicians in America- if you've listened to country radio over the past decade, you've enjoyed his handiwork. We discuss Derek's insane schedule, transition from successful road dog to first call studio ninja, and refreshingly wholistic view on crafting guitar parts and making records.
Ordination of Derek Wells: Dr. Mark McDowell - preaching, Rev. Andy Lewis - charge to pastor, John Wingate - charge to congregation
Just eight hours after Labor Day Jason and Brandon caught up with Nashville’s hottest session guitarist, Derek Wells. Derek was born in Nashville, Arkansas and he lives in Nashville, Tennessee. So it’s safe to say Derek is from Nashville. The music industry is all Derek has known since birth. Both parents have very successful careers in the industry and Derek shares what it was like growing up on Keith Whitley’s and Dolly Parton's bus. Derek really got serious about playing music at a very surprising age and he never went back to journalism school. Let’s just say this, Derek had a very real understanding what he was up against coming from Music City. He dove in head first in his parents basement and learned everything that he could because he felt the talent bar was set in Nashville, and if he was going to be a musician he had to work harder. He waited tables and practiced until landing his first pro gig with Josh Turner. Through time, more gigs, and some road lessons, he made the shift to playing sessions. Derek has recorded on some of the biggest projects of 2016. Artists like Maren Morris, Jake Owen, Blake Shelton, Drake White, Granger Smith, Jennifer Nettles, and Dan + Shay to name a few. You even get to hear some of what to look forward to from big artists that Derek worked on. Does Derek have it all figured out? By his own accord, no! “I’m just trying to prove I belong.” Listen to a man full of humility trying to figure it out just like the rest of us. The guides get a back seat view through the life of one of the biggest session players of today. They talk about anxiety and even the fear of failure in the studio. How do you even get plugged in to the session scene of Nashville? What’s the difference between a road guy and a session guy? Listen to some of Derek’s stories while working with today's biggest music acts, his favorite past projects he’s worked on, his favorite gear, and even his advice for session players and songwriters. Derek is up for Country Music Association’s Musician of the Year Award for 2016. If you’re a CMA member we implore you to…VOTE FOR DEREK!!!
