Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we dive into some of cinema's biggest box office failures and explore whether they deserve a second chance! As the spooky season unfolds, Troy and Brad tackle the supernatural horror film of 2023, The Exorcist: Believer. This sixth installment in the Exorcist series, directed by David Gordon Green, treats horror fans as if they've never experienced a well-crafted scare before. It's baffling how a film can simultaneously recycle horror clichés while attempting to address themes of faith with all the finesse of a sledgehammer. Let's face it: this movie is a mess, and the guys don't hold back in their critique, exposing the film's glaring flaws and their hatred of David Gordon Green. Save yourself the frustration; instead of subjecting yourself to this cinematic disappointment, seek out a genuinely good horror film that respects the genre, your intelligence, and your time. The Exorcist: Believer is directed by David Gordon Green and stars Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O'Neill, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Ann Dowd, and Ellen Burstyn Not A Bomb has has plenty of spooky designs in our Merch store! Director David Gordon Green returns to ruin another beloved horror franchise. After making three terrible Halloween movies that we covered, this time Gordon Green sets out to destroy The Exorcist franchise. We put off covering this for as long as we could but eventually had to face it. This wretched Exorcist sequel stars Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O'Neill, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, and Ann Dowd. And Gordon Green even got 90-year-old Ellen Burstyn to reprise her role as Chris MacNeil. And for what, Mr. Gordon Green?! I'm getting angry just thinking about this movie! Hear our devastating takedown of The Exorcist: Believer. It will be followed by another terrible sequel called The Exorcist: Deceiver in 2025, and we will witness that atrocity as well!

The first single that Carly Pearce put out to radio as a solo artist was also her first #1 hit. That song, Every Little Thing, was written by this week's guest - the amazing and talented Emily Shackelton! In this episode, you'll hear how Emily grew up in a very small town in Minnesota surrounded by music. She was encouraged from a young age to pursue what she loves and quickly found out that it was songwriting. Emily tells us stories about how she doubted her career in Nashville many times but every time she did, she turned to her faith and the right doors were opened for her. After first moving to Nashville, Emily entered into a BMI songwriting competition and won! Emily also talks about the stories behind writing songs for ABC's hit television show “Nashville”, starting a professional relationship with Liz Rose, and writing many other songs for Carly Pearce. She has also written songs for Reba McEntire, Jennifer Nettles, Sara Evans, Jana Kramer, Cassadee Pope, Lauren Alaina, Mickey Guyton, David Cook, Seth Ennis and more. When I asked Emily what advice she would give her 8-year-old self, knowing what she knows now, she said “keep going and trust god”. So cool and so true. Emily has a lot of exciting things happening now with two brand new songs of her own released - “Beloved” and “Our God Sustains”. You gotta check those out – they're amazing. She also has many shows coming up and lots more cuts to keep an eye out for! This week, we're comparing the most beloved movie ever made by William Friedkin and one of the last movies made by William Friedkin. That's right, The Exorcist: Believer came out recently as a reboot sequel of The Exorcist, which ignores all the subsequent sequels in true Halloween (2018). In addition to our review of that film, we discuss Friedkin's The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, an adaptation of a 50s play (originally a novel and also a film) set in the modern day. Despite being a "TV movie," it's actually fantastic? Show Notes 00:00:00 – The Exorcist: Believer 00:30:15 – The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial The Exorcist: Believer was directed by David Gordon Green, who co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler and story credits that include Green, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride. The film came out on October 6 through Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, and it has a 111-minute runtime. The show notes for this episode are https://trumpetdynamics.com/trumpetvinnie2. I believe I left out the number 2 during the interview because I initially planned to have this be one giant episode, but wisely chose to break it into two parts. And what a part this is. Vinnie and I dove deep into the "why" of playing trumpet. The "How" tends to be rather superficial, which is why I don't have much interest in podcasts like that.
