My annual Thanksgiving replay is early this year because Thanksgiving is so late! But I'm thrilled to offer up one of my favorite interviews of the year—my conversation with Dominic Glynn, where we get to learn all about Dominic's journey through music for film and television, and get a behind the scenes look at just how our favorite movies and shows get the musical treatment that makes them come to life. If you haven't heard this interview before, I'm confident you'll enjoy it, and if you have, it's absolutely worth a second listen. -- My guest this week is Dominic Glynn, a prolific composer for film and television. Dominic got his start working on Doctor Who, and has provided music for titles as diverse as Red Dwarf and The Simpsons. Dominic tells me how his career began in the mid-80s as a self-taught musician, how incidental music works, what it's like to write for an orchestra, and more.  Read this week's article, on why you should make bad art, here. It's Dominic Glynn, composer of the 1986 version of the Doctor Who theme, as well as doing the music for The Mysterious Planet, The Ultimate Foe, Dragonfire, The Happiness Patrol and Survival. Also, expect some talk about electronic dance music, as Kenny gets all excited over Dominic's time performing/mixing/producing as Syzygy!

After half a lifetime of waiting, the time has come for Peter Capaldi to finally take on the role he was born to play. But is twenty-first century Who ready for this spiky and unpredictable leading man and his sexy and unhinged mortal enemy? We're about to find out — but first, let's take a Deep Breath. Notes and links The new “bees in a theremin” theme music reminds Simon uncomfortably of the EP Doctor Who: Variations on a Theme, which was released in 1989 and contained four different versions of the Doctor Who theme: the Mood Version and the Regeneration Mix by Mark Ayers, the Terror Version by Dominic Glynn and the Latin Version by Keff McCulloch. The Series 9 episode Before the Flood features a version of this new theme with Peter Capaldi himself playing electric guitar. Todd likes this version much better. The new title sequence was based closely on a concept created in 2013 by digital artist Billy Hanshaw, which quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of views and was spotted by Steven Moffat, who said it was the “only new title idea I'd seen since 1963”. You can read the story of its creation in Connor Johnston's interview with Billy Hanshaw at Doctor Who TV. So. Elizabeth Tower, which houses Big Ben, is 97.5 metres tall, while a Tyrannosaurus rex standing upright is, we think, only about 5 metres tall. But in November 2022, paleontologists Jordan Mallon and David Hone suggested that the largest T. rex could have been 70% larger than the largest specimen we have now, and it could have weighed about 15 tonnes. Which suggests that Madam Vastra knew what she was talking about. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Todd is @ToddBeilby, and Simon is @simonmoore72. We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which has completed its coverage of the first half of the show. We'll be back again for Series C later in the year, probably. Ben and David leap back in time to the fag end of Thatcher's Britain and talk about Love and War, Paul Cornell's 1992 novel featuring Ace and introducing Bernice Summerfield. What captured Ben's fancy so long ago that he bought the book? And, why did David never read a NA novel until this past week? Travellers, fungus, hair, and more in this podcast episode. Opening music is from the end of Surivial, "...and Somewhere Else, The Tea's Getting Cold," composted by Dominic Glynn. Closing music is "One Man Rock And Roll Band," written and sung by Roy Harper, recorded at the BBC in the late 1970s and which he played at the last Stonehenge Free Festival in 1984.

There's nothing wrong with Perivale. Ben theorizes that Rona Munro is channeling the myth of Herne the Hunter as inspiration for the Cheetah people revealing the magic that is hidden in suburban London. Not so much the Cockney urchin that Ace likes to pretend she is, the trip back to Perivale reveals that she perhaps is a spoiled middle class kid whose making a big deal about not much of anything. David notes this story feels much more London than anything London in the modern Who era. Proving that setting is more than just a few set dressings of buses and phone boxes. All-in-all, Survival is a praiseworthy Doctor Who story and sadly the last of the classic era. Opening music is from the score of Survival by Dominic Glynn. Glynn also composed the closing music, "...and Somewhere Else, The Tea's Getting Cold." At the very end, to help celebrate the old western feel to Glynn's score, we ultimately close with the Cellar Set's 2007 interpretation of the theme in "Spaghetti Who."

Ben and David are glad to visit Terra Alpha to see the Candyman. Will happiness prevail? Ben is reminded of the many student plays he saw during the 1980s with minimalist sets, elaborate costumes, and hints of Kafka mixed with a rather subtly riff on Thatcher in this 1988 story. David, for his part, can barely remember watching this in 1990 and finds in this rewatch the story is better than the little he could recall and could potentially is due for a remake. Opening and closing music is from Dominic Glynn's score for The Happiness Patrol.

So Dragonfire: Ace's debut story with more Glitz action then you thought possible. Ben and David share their thoughts about Ian Brigg's first Doctor Who story and explain what worked for them and what didn't. Poor Mel. We hardly knew you. Is Doctor Who: The Unfolding Text the best book to give a new writer for the show? And why would an ice vampire open a frozen food store on a moon he was exiled upon? Why are the crystals in the ice world set better than those in the series 11 console room? And does Syl's ice acting work if everyone else in the cast has traction boots on? All-in-all a rather inauspicious start to one of the programme's most popular companions... Ace! Opening music from T'Pau's 1987 single, "China In Your Hand". Closing music is from Dominic Glynn's score for Dragonfire.

If you can remember the 1980s, you weren't really there... and this week Ben and David try to prove they really were part of the 1980s. Ben and David try to recall memories of Doctor Who through the JN-T era when they were busy with their young adult lives and not so interested in their favourite show. Is there a connection between tele-fantasy and sci-fi? Is playing Dungeons & Dragons a prerequisite for being in 1980s Doctor Who fandom? Was BBC Controller Michael Grade's decision to cancel, then put the show on hiatus a good thing? Did he fire the right man? And, do the Two even remember the hiatus happening or the casting of McCoy and Aldred as the last Doctor-companion duo of the programme's original run? Opening is from The Trial of the Time Lord: The Mysterious Planet score and closing music is from Dragonfire score, both composed by Dominic Glynn.

Hello one and all! This is a cover I did a while ago. Based on a dream I had where Vangelis at the height of his powers (around Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner) did a cover of the Dr Who theme. When I woke, I had to recreate it! It incorporates melodic elements from the Peter Howell and Dominic Glynn versions and a bit of Murray Gold in terms of percussion. I also did a video to go with it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY4SwBHe8oE Enjoy!

In what may be a new record for top-of-the-show off-topic banter, much hashing out of the new Star Wars trailer (of course) occurred, along with Steven’s descent into schedule and archived newspaper madness, wherein he charts out exactly when he (and by extension the other Two Who Rule) began watching Doctor Who on KSPS, the semi-local PBS station. Besides this lunacy, much discussion was had of a Series 8 soundtrack release (3 discs!), Dominic Glynn’s excellent Ravalox Remixes of his original scores for 80s Who, Christopher Eccleston's recent comments on why he and Doctor Who parted ways, and much, much more! Day Two of Gallifrey One 2014! We ring in this auspicious occasion with the august personage of Dominic Glynn, musician extraordinaire and composer of what many (well...us, anyway) consider the best arrangement of the classic opening theme. And we continue with the Lovely Person Agenda with the presence of author and bon vivant Rob Shearman and comedian, actor and 60s BBC barman Toby Hadoke, who performed his one-man show "My Stepson Stole my Sonic Screwdriver" here at Gallifrey One only last night!
