Anthony “Runeslinger” (Casting Shadows) and I discuss what makes “good players” buy into horror roleplaying and, specifically, why characters would investigate terrifying situations and keep returning after trauma. They explore common answers, such as belonging to an organization (e.g., Delta Green), and why that only starts the conversation, contrasting player motivation (“otherwise we don't play the game”) with believable character motivation. Anthony emphasizes building motivations through bonds, community ties, and mirrored player/character connections—what he calls “unity of perspective”—rather than removing agency by trapping characters. Using examples from their long Call of Cthulhu and Trail of Cthulhu campaigns, they examine active versus passive buy-in, GM/player collaboration, table communication, and how differing play styles and feedback help sustain engaging horror play.************************************Support the show for as little as $1 a month: Add this to the end of your link on DriveThruRPG to support the show: ?affiliate_id=1044145Example: https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/397612/Court-of-Blades--Scandal-Forged-in-the-Dark?affiliate_id=1044145Check out our live-streaming content on Twitch Don't miss our RPG Actual Plays, tutorials, and gaming content on YouTube Listen to an excellent board game podcast Go to the Writer's Room for 7th Sea Adventures!Check out the great games from A Couple of Drakes:Listen to Tales of the ManticoreFollow us on Facebook, Follow on BlueSky

Vampire: The Masquerade is expanding its presence on D&D Beyond with a new 5.5E crossover product titled Bound by Blood, published by Ghostfire Gaming and featuring a new Kindred class and adventure. This move follows similar partnerships with other publishers, indicating a trend of rival games embracing the 5.5E ruleset. In a related shift, Renegade Games has announced it will discontinue its bespoke Essence20 system for new editions of its licensed properties like Transformers, GI Joe, and Power Rangers, transitioning instead to a modified version of Dungeons & Dragons 5.5E to reach a broader player base. Green Ronin Publishing has officially released Valiant Adventures, a new TTRPG setting supplement for the Mutants & Masterminds third edition system. Based on the Valiant Universe, a shared world featuring characters like Bloodshot and X-O Manowa, the release includes two main volumes: the Hero's Handbook and the Worlds of Valiant sourcebook. These supplements provide updated combat mechanics, a new “Hero Point” economy, and extensive lore, allowing players to explore this gritty and morally complex comic universe without requiring additional source material. Award-winning designer Mike Shea, known as Sly Flourish, has announced Rise of the Lazy Gamemaster, a new 160-page resource designed to complement his previous Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master series. Unlike his earlier works that focused primarily on D&D 5E, this upcoming book will be system-agnostic, offering tools, tips, and adventure outlines adaptable to various systems including Shadowdark, Daggerheart, and Dragonbane. Shea aims to provide practical advice to speed up preparation and enhance interactivity, with a crowdfunding campaign for the project scheduled to launch in early July. The independent TTRPG market has a new competitor with the launch of RPG Trader, a marketplace created by Ten Acre Games founder Hugh Lashbrooke to support indie creators. Designed as a specific alternative to larger platforms like DriveThruRPG and Itch.io, RPG Trader focuses on discoverability and flexible publishing tools, offering creators an 80% share of sales revenue. The platform distinguishes itself with a zero-tolerance policy for AI-generated content, an integrated print-on-demand service through Lulu, and a detailed taxonomy system to help players find games based on specific play styles and themes. #vapirerpg #valiantcomics #lazydungeonmaster #rpgtrader Valiant Adventures for Mutans and Masterminds: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/567952/valiant-adventures-worlds-of-valiant?affiliate_id=2081746 RPG Trader: https://rpg-trader.com/ Roll Big or Go Home Bundle: https://humblebundleinc.sjv.io/k49Mnd Doctor Who and Warhammer to Cthulhu, Transformers, and even My Little Pony! The Deep Lake Latchkeys are a group of people who used to live in Deep Lake, New Mexico when they were kids. In the 80s and early 90s, there was a mysterious public access TV station in town. That is, until it was wiped off the face of the earth in 1992. Most have explained it's disappearance mundanely, but only these folks remember the station's programming, and its bizarre, otherworldly fare.Going back to their old home town to seek the truth in 2004, their investigation proves fruitless thus far. However, a tape of a recording from the station appears on their doorstep, as does a man their age. He pleads for their help investigating his old childhood friend's home on Escondito Street. His family vanished in the 1994 without a trace, and what remains in that house is not good...Thus begins our broadcast day.Public Access is a Carved From Brindlewood RPG of nostalgic analog horror in the early aughts by Jason Cordova. You can find out more about the game at The Gauntlet (with links to purchase from DriveThruRPG.) Public Access recently had a successful Kickstarter for an updated edition of the game with new stories and expansions. Today we sit down with Laurence Philips of Hardy Roach Games, an independent designer who creates unique games that focus on themes that dive deeper than your average TTRPG. His one-page games are weird and exciting to play, and now he discusses his brand-new game, Il Fantasmo del Giallo. Step into the world of Giallo, a 20th-century Italian film genre that focuses on switchbacks, misdirection, and mile-high stakes. Il Fantasmo del Giallo is a cinematic, dark, brooding game that focuses on narratives and scenes more than a traditional dice-roller. Drama, Mystery, and Mortality are the main words of the game, and it's an excellent example of the doors that have opened in modern roleplaying. Trauma decks, scene work, and avant-garde lenses to play make for a new take on an old genre. My wife and friends sat down and played the new Division TTRPG. It's based on The Division 1 and 2 video game developed and released by Ubisoft. We had a blast. Can't wait for the full release. The Kickstarter closes on June 3rd 2026. This is the short mission in the Quickstart Guide. It's free if you go to the official Kickstarter page or on DriveThru RPG. Hope everyone likes it.
Ray Chou is a comic book and TTRPG creator--one of the talents behind the amazing Mythworks team, known for some of the last few years' most anticipated games--Wildsea, Slugblaster, Pico, and a whole lot more. Their studio defines the modern age of TTRPG development, and he walked us through his experience and process, offering a lot of insight into how it all works.Today's episode focuses on Ray's unique experiences breaking into the industry and a close look into what it means to work in the high-level indie space. Ray broke into game writing at a pivotal point in the industry. It was before the medium really blew up, but recently enough to ride the wave of Kickstarter just as it was beginning. We also talked in depth about Mythworks and how it operates as an organization, leveraging the team's creative strengths to create indie work that feels like blockbuster TTRPG gaming. Fellow movie buffs Chris Holmes and Stephen Clements join for an electrifying ambulation through the gothic corridors of over 30 Frankenstein movies, past and present. Chris and Shane disagree on the merits and content of the original Frankenstein novel. Shane has thoughts on spoilers and people expecting them to apply forever. There's Iconic, and then there's iconic. What Frankenstein movie was so bad that Stephen wished his heart would have stopped while watching it, and he begs all of humanity never to watch it? For you Mage: The Ascension fans out there, Dr. Frankenstein was a Son of Ether (and so were the Ghostbusters). Do Frankenstein movies play into our fear of being eaten? Stephen manages to invoke the old military urban legend of the Ether Bunny. Chris will sit through every second of a putrid, horrible movie that he despises at least twice. Chris saw a movie in the theater using Smell-O-Vision… in 2025. Stephen has super-strong (like, super-strong) opinions about Poor Things. You are probably wondering, what the heck is a Slurmph? Dustin is. He's a Slurmph. And he'll let you know, in case you forgot. It's time to meet Dustin and Edmundo, best friends forever! EDITOR'S NOTES: A couple of additional tech notes here. Ironically, although we all touted the great qualities of the alternate FX-heavy patron-exclusive renders at the end of this episode, there didn't end up being many moments worth adding sound effects to in this one. Additionally, due to some audio issues, this episode took a lot longer to edit than normal and I really wanted to get it out the door. So this time around, there is no alternate FX version. My apologies! If it's any consolation, since we just finished recording it, I can promise you that the next episode has a lot more effects. Also, due to the normal biological needs of the human body, Alex had stepped away from the table right before we closed out, and thus wasn't present when we were introducing ourselves. In case you were not aware, Henry is played by Alex. Thanks, Alex! Drop us a line! You can follow us (sporadically) on Facebook, and we'd love to see you on our Discord Channel too. Prompted by a situation at one of his game tables, Decurion, our GM for the Ruby and Fire AP series, posted a small pdf he created, titled "How to Play Exalted" on our discord. He also made the "mistake" of claiming "I can talk for at least 45 minutes on this..." So I took him up on the offer! While specifically written for Exalted, almost all of this applies to any narratively focused game, regardless of system, and so we chatted about it for a while. Welcome to the Circle of Veritas, a Candela Obscura Real Play podcast by the Creative Play and Podcast Network. In the gaslit streets of Newfair, our brave circle of investigators faces ancient horrors, uncovering secrets while battling the supernatural. As they strive to protect the fragile veil of reality, listeners are taken on an atmospheric journey through the shadows that cloak their world. Our circle navigates talents, relationships, and the eerie mysteries of a supernatural tome to collect gear and build trust. Can they maintain discretion and unity while facing the darkness that watches in waiting? As new alliances form and old tensions fade, the investigators are summoned to the Librum Veritas to unravel secrets hidden in the heart of the Briar Green District. Our first full episode of The Circle of Veritas, our Candela Obscura campaign, is now live! Today, we check in with Em Acosta, a game designer known for games like Exile and Crescent. They're heavily involved in the industry, with a lot of writing credits on all sorts of games, and they've just started a blog. Our focus is on the process of game-making. There are so many factors that go into making anything creative, and especially so in the TTRPG space. Em talks about how their process has changed over the years, the importance and complexity of playtesting and interacting with public space, and unique ways to play and consume relationships in gaming. It's a personal and engaging interview that touches on the larger processes of game writing. The second of two interviews with game designer Ken St. Andre, this time focusing on his video game design history (see part one for discussion around his tabletop RPG design). Games discussed in this episode: Tunnels & Trolls: Crusaders of Khazan, Adventure Construction Set, Wasteland (without which there would be no Fallout), and Wasteland 2. Ken's favorite Christopher Reeve Superman movie. One of Shane's pet peeves with current superhero comic book stories (especially DC). The origins of storytelling. Did the Empire from Star Wars have a good side? What happened when Ken and Roberta Williams of Sierra On-Line offered Ken a job? What two classic 80s action flicks helped inspire Wasteland (one is sort of obvious, one might not be), and what does Daffy Duck have to do with it all? What does the Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes RPG have to do with Tunnels & Trolls, and what do they both have to do with Wasteland? Ken's thoughts on being involved with Wasteland 2. Ken's never-released superhero game version of Tunnels & Trolls called Power Trip. The most important rule in Tunnels & Trolls (as opposed to the most important principle). Watch out for snollygosters. Ken's thoughts on power scale in superhero RPGs (think Batman and Superman in the same fight). Q&A with Ken based on questions submitted by Matt Barton of Matt Chat. Ken's advice for game designers. What would Ken have done differently in his career? Cockroach population analysis. How Ken made it into the Hall of Fame. After building the adventure in front of a live audience, both Dan and Paul ran the dungeon for different groups at the convention - with very different results. What worked at the table? What broke? And what final changes are needed before publication? Join us as we compare playtest experiences, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the design, and talk through how we refine a crowd-created dungeon into a polished module. The finished adventure will be released on DriveThruRPG and shared free with our patrons alongside all our Dungeon Design Dashes. DriveThruRPG (Wandering DMs publisher page)

I am joined by René-Pier, a TTRPG designer who's committed to making the games and design accessible. He's the author of Breathless (and the new Frightmare Edition), Boundless, and Stoneburner. One of the main things we focus on in the episode is the nature of open-source and free games, and why they're such an important part of this growing community. RP dives deep into the current state of TTRPGs, licensing, and managing community expectations and your own artistic endeavors. We also dive deep into the creation and approach he takes to his games, with simple rules, deadly mechanics, and a really unique way dice can impact how a game functions. It's a great conversation, and RP has such a clear understanding of how games work. A lone harmonica rattling through a ship hull; a frontiersman whistles his sad song as he shoulders his laser rifle; an ad plays over the speakers of an empty outpost in a sandy desert, two suns glaring overhead. These are the scenes of Orbital Blues, a lo-fi, sci-fi romp through the furthest frontier imaginable. Today, we sat down with Sam and Zach, the co-creators of the game, to discuss their relationship, the conversations and execution that led to the game's development, and all the nitty-gritty of how these games are getting made. We talk about their unique approach to writing, the beautiful design decisions they make, and how they involve the community. They also talk about Outlaws and Corporations, their new expansion that's hitting shelves now. Please note: this recording had some Technical Difficulties. We did our best to edit around and through as much of them as we could. Our apologies.Tristan Zimmerman returns to run us through his latest game, Ballad Hunters! Amateur folklorists are in the employ of the British crown in early 1800s. Folk ballads have magical power. Using what they know, the folklorists scour the countryside for new songs, either learning of their power, or seeking to prevent dangers or heartache that they foretell from happening. In the far Northwest, near the Scottish Border, our folklorists use their "compasses" to seek the next ballad coming to life. In the thick autumnal fog, the come across someone waiting for another, and strangeness starts to present itself...Ballad Hunters, published by Pelgrane Press, should be coming to Kickstarter the week of posting! If you like what you hear, please consider backing the game to help it come to life. If you want an early taste, you can try the early access edition, available on DriveThruRPG. Also available there is Shanty Hunters, available in print and PDF. Tristan was last heard here leading us through a game of Shanty Hunters. The Coalition is upon us! The confrontation with the Coalition has finally arrived! Will our heroes somehow find a way out of this deadly pickle of an encounter against such overwhelming force? Listen and find out! On a tech note, this one's pretty epic. We are normally keeping the Effects-heavy alternate renders as exclusive bonuses for our patrons and supporters. However, the effects work-up on this one was pretty awesome, and as such we're gonna release the fully-decked-out version to the main feed, as an example of the kind of stuff on the patron feed. We hope you enjoy! And this time, be sure to listen all the way to the end! Drop us a line! You can follow us (sporadically) on Facebook, and we'd love to see you on our Discord Channel too.
