We talk about how he got into game development, actual plays, and the community at large, and we dive deep into some of his most compelling games and what makes them work. Bill Barsh of Pacesetter Games holds forth on Pacesetter Games updates and the 50th Anniversary of Palace of the Vampire Queen, the first module ever published for Dungeons & Dragons. Palace of the Vampire Queen isn't just the first published D&D module; it's also the first published megadungeon. What are Pacesetter's plans for the 50th anniversary of Palace of the Vampire Queen? (hint: they're cool). Shane's inner 13-year-old asks the obligatory question that a 13-year-old would ask about the Vampire Queen. Bill gives his definitive answer on whether the Vampire Queen would own Strahd. OTHER COOL STUFF IN THIS EPISODE: Bill's market view is that people are playing a lot of 5E but aren't buying a lot of new 5E product. Bill predicts the timeframe for the new version of D&D to come out. A surprising amount of B/X D&D is being played vs "Red Box" and BECMI at cons. The third edition of the BX RPG from Pacesetter is unleashing. Dungeon X is coming… Dungeon X is taking the best of D&D from the last 50 years and molding it into a new game. Choose-Your-Own-Path Stories are a new choice on the market. Solo adventures (one play only, not a duo between DM and player) definitely have a place in the hobby. Pacesetter runs one of the longest-running consecutive D&D tournament series at cons. There was a time when TSR thought publishing adventure modules was a terrible idea with no market. Let's be real, OD&D is super important to the hobby, but it's not the most organized and readable set of rules. What game does Shane declare as THE "D&D" success story of the past couple of years? Read transcriptToday's episode continues our Combat Options series with a discussion on how "called shots" work in Palladium, with a heavy focus on the two major editions of Rifts. As with previous discussions on these options, we largely talk about how to do things using the rules as written, with minimal focus on house rules. Also, we want to give a big thanks to everyone for patience on getting the releases rolling again. NPC was dealing with a medical issue for the past few weeks that made it difficult to do any editing. That seems to have been resolved, so looks like we're back in action! Drop us a line! I am joined by Dillin Apelyan and James D'Amato. If you listen to the One Shot Podcast, you've probably heard of both of them, and if you're a fan of the actual play scene, you've seen their work all over. And now, they've come on to the show to discuss their brand new book.Dillin's been featured on Dropout, Critical Role, and podcasts across the space. They've designed a bunch of great games, including the HUNT(er/ed) and Neverland: The Impossible Island. You can find out more about Superdillin here. James has been working in both the comedy and TTRPG scene for years. He's the creator of the One Shot Network and the author of the Ultimate RPG book series, which is an absolute masterclass in breaking down the genre for players and Game Masters alike. You can find his books here! The pair are more than just integral parts of the community today — they're good friends and even better podcast guests. The episode was a blast, breaking down their experiences and talking in depth about their new book, The Ultimate RPG Villain Backstory Guide. They dive deep about gaming culture, their GMing experiences, and provide a lot of insight as to how you can build better NPCs and characters. Chaosium has re-released the free quickstart PDF for its new RPG, Time Without Tide, to remove unwanted AI-generated image descriptions that were automatically added by Adobe software without the publisher’s consent. This issue, which was also encountered by Evil Hat with their game Umdaar: Planet of Swords, Super-Science, and Sorcery, highlights growing industry opposition to AI-generated content in tabletop gaming, as many publishers continue to champion human creativity. The miniature skirmish game Mutant Chronicles: Warzone Eternal is entering a new phase under Trans Atlantis Games. This initiative brings the title into the modern era with new STLs, free downloadable rules, and three new units, all of which are currently available on MyMiniFactory. The transition involves a partnership where Trans Atlantis Games takes over the ongoing publication and distribution of the game, aiming to expand its reach and support beyond a “boutique” release. Mongoose Publishing has launched Singularity, an expansive 608-page mega-campaign for Traveller 2nd Edition. This three-book set, now available on DriveThruRPG, departs from traditional Traveller tropes by focusing on godlike alien intelligences and galaxy-shattering technology within a post-humanistic narrative. The campaign is designed for high-end play and challenges players to make impactful decisions that can fundamentally reshape the Traveller universe. Strange Stories is an upcoming rules-light horror TTRPG developed by the team behind the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast. Designed for single-session play, the system features pregenerated characters and an innovative audio adventure companion that allows the Story Guide to prepare for a session by listening to a short podcast. The game aims to be an accessible “gateway” experience, allowing groups, even those with no previous RPG experience, to start playing quickly with minimal setup. #chaosium #warzoneeternal #travellerrpg #strangestories Warzone Eternal Frontier: https://www.myminifactory.com/frontier/warzone-eternal-5721 Singularity for Traveller: https://www.mongoosepublishing.com/products/singularity Strange Stories on Backerkit: https://www.backerkit.com/call_to_action/ed994b09-71cf-4128-88bc-e45f89cf7d1b/landing Mantic Companion App: https://companion.manticgames.com/ Use our Referral code: MCTXEE Support Us by Shopping on DTRPG (afilliate link): https://www.drivethrurpg.com?affiliate_id=2081746 Matt’s DriveThruRPG Publications: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matthew%20Robinson https://substack.com/@matthewrobinson3 Chris on social media: https://hyvemynd.itch.io/ Jeremy's Links: http://www.abusecartoons.com/ http://www.rcharvey.com Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/upturnedtable Give us a tip on our livestream: https://streamlabs.com/upturnedtabletop/tip Donate or give us a tip on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/2754JZFW2QZU4 Intro song is “Chips” by KokoroNoMe https://kokoronome.bandcamp.com/
Case 1 of the new Candela Obscura book Horrors of the Fairelands The Call: While our Investigators are gathered at their chapter house a telegraph arrived from their Lightkeeper: "Candela Obscura agent has been killed..." Welcome to the Circle of Veritas, a Candela Obscura Real Play podcast by the Creative Play and Podcast Network. In the gaslit streets of Newfair, our brave circle of investigators faces ancient horrors, uncovering secrets while battling the supernatural. As they strive to protect the fragile veil of reality, listeners are taken on an atmospheric journey through the shadows that cloak their world. Our circle navigates talents, relationships, and the eerie mysteries of a supernatural tome to collect gear and build trust. Can they maintain discretion and unity while facing the darkness that watches in waiting? As new alliances form and old tensions fade, the investigators are summoned to the Librum Veritas to unravel secrets hidden in the heart of the Briar Green District. With every roll of the dice and strategic alliance, the line between the familiar and the unknown blurs. Stay vigilant, for in the shadows, ancient truths stir. Our first full episode of The Circle of Veritas, our Candela Obscura campaign, is now live! In Session 1, our newly-formed Circle is summoned to the bookshop Librum Veritas and sent into their first case: mysterious deaths in a graveyard, sigils of ash and bleed etched into flesh, and rumors of war-dead walking again… The circle must unravel the truth behind the haunted coin, lost soldiers, and a dark cult on the rise. ✨ Candela Obscura is published by Darrington Press, the imprint of Critical Role, and you can find the core book and quickstart rules at https://darringtonpress.com/candela-obscura. Set for an October 2026 release, this 320-page volume is authored by industry experts such as Matt Forbeck and Jon Peterson, covering multiple campaign settings and lore for $60. Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast face significant challenges finding a developer for “Baldur's Gate 4” following the departure of Larian Studios. Developers like Archetype Entertainment have declined the project, noting the overwhelming difficulty of following up the massive success of “Baldur's Gate 3”. BackerKit has partnered with DriveThruRPG to streamline the distribution of digital content for TTRPG crowdfunding campaigns. This integration allows for the automatic delivery of digital rewards to backers as soon as they pledge, improving the experience for both creators and supporters. The board game publisher CMON has undergone staff reductions, including the departure of long-time director of design and development Michael Shinall. These layoffs follow a difficult 2025 for the company, which recorded $20 million in losses and prompted the sale of several key IPs to stabilize its finances.1 “Our Lives, Our Fortunes” is a crowdfunding campaign on BackerKit, which runs until July 5, 2026. This supernatural horror TTRPG presents an alternate history of the American Revolution where the war is won not by traditional historical figures, but by witches, werewolves, and necromancers. Published by Wet Ink Games, the title utilizes the “+One System,” which relies on D6 dice pools for skills and a deck of playing cards to manage supernatural abilities, offering a unique narrative experience centered on the struggle for equality. #dnd #wetink #cmon #baldursgates4 Our Lives, Our Fortunes on Backerkit: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/wet-ink-games/our-lives-our-fortunes Roll Big or Go Home Bundle: https://humblebundleinc.sjv.io/k49Mnd Doctor Who and Warhammer to Cthulhu, Transformers, and even My Little Pony! Video game developer Johnny Wood-Brooks discusses his career and No One Left To Die, his new quirky retro indie video game. An update on his Classic Ultima Online project. An overview of his 20+ year career in video games, including Midway, Turbine, Standing Stone, and ZeniMax. How he got into the industry (and what method he used to "cheat"). What programming language is still surprisingly dominant in video game development? The video game industry can be a tough biz. Johnny has been pleasantly surprised by the Godot game engine's capacity for rapid game development. Multiplayer is still surprisingly hard to implement in games after all of this time. The process and challenges of getting your game on Steam (Johnny says the easy part was making the game!). The 8-bit / chiptune soundtrack for No One Left To Die is by Matthew Lister aka Cobra Commander. Shane compares his podcasting approach to Ed Wood. Anthony “Runeslinger” (Casting Shadows) and I discuss what makes “good players” buy into horror roleplaying and, specifically, why characters would investigate terrifying situations and keep returning after trauma. They explore common answers, such as belonging to an organization (e.g., Delta Green), and why that only starts the conversation, contrasting player motivation (“otherwise we don't play the game”) with believable character motivation. Anthony emphasizes building motivations through bonds, community ties, and mirrored player/character connections—what he calls “unity of perspective”—rather than removing agency by trapping characters. Using examples from their long Call of Cthulhu and Trail of Cthulhu campaigns, they examine active versus passive buy-in, GM/player collaboration, table communication, and how differing play styles and feedback help sustain engaging horror play.************************************Support the show for as little as $1 a month: Add this to the end of your link on DriveThruRPG to support the show: ?affiliate_id=1044145Example: https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/397612/Court-of-Blades--Scandal-Forged-in-the-Dark?affiliate_id=1044145Check out our live-streaming content on Twitch Don't miss our RPG Actual Plays, tutorials, and gaming content on YouTube Listen to an excellent board game podcast Go to the Writer's Room for 7th Sea Adventures!Check out the great games from A Couple of Drakes:Listen to Tales of the ManticoreFollow us on Facebook, Follow on BlueSky
The Deep Lake Latchkeys are a group of people who used to live in Deep Lake, New Mexico when they were kids. In the 80s and early 90s, there was a mysterious public access TV station in town. That is, until it was wiped off the face of the earth in 1992. Most have explained it's disappearance mundanely, but only these folks remember the station's programming, and its bizarre, otherworldly fare.Going back to their old home town to seek the truth in 2004, their investigation proves fruitless thus far. However, a tape of a recording from the station appears on their doorstep, as does a man their age. He pleads for their help investigating his old childhood friend's home on Escondito Street. His family vanished in the 1994 without a trace, and what remains in that house is not good...Thus begins our broadcast day.Public Access is a Carved From Brindlewood RPG of nostalgic analog horror in the early aughts by Jason Cordova. You can find out more about the game at The Gauntlet (with links to purchase from DriveThruRPG.) Today we sit down with Laurence Philips of Hardy Roach Games, an independent designer who creates unique games that focus on themes that dive deeper than your average TTRPG. His one-page games are weird and exciting to play, and now he discusses his brand-new game, Il Fantasmo del Giallo. Step into the world of Giallo, a 20th-century Italian film genre that focuses on switchbacks, misdirection, and mile-high stakes. Il Fantasmo del Giallo is a cinematic, dark, brooding game that focuses on narratives and scenes more than a traditional dice-roller. Drama, Mystery, and Mortality are the main words of the game, and it's an excellent example of the doors that have opened in modern roleplaying. Trauma decks, scene work, and avant-garde lenses to play make for a new take on an old genre. We're back to another Rules Talk episode! This time, NPC presents a different take on handling the combat initiative flow in Palladium games, inspired by the "pair them off" concepts from the more recent rules books. Ray Chou is a comic book and TTRPG creator--one of the talents behind the amazing Mythworks team, known for some of the last few years' most anticipated games--Wildsea, Slugblaster, Pico, and a whole lot more. Their studio defines the modern age of TTRPG development, and he walked us through his experience and process, offering a lot of insight into how it all works.Today's episode focuses on Ray's unique experiences breaking into the industry and a close look into what it means to work in the high-level indie space. Ray broke into game writing at a pivotal point in the industry. It was before the medium really blew up, but recently enough to ride the wave of Kickstarter just as it was beginning. We also talked in depth about Mythworks and how it operates as an organization, leveraging the team's creative strengths to create indie work that feels like blockbuster TTRPG gaming. You are probably wondering, what the heck is a Slurmph? Dustin is. He's a Slurmph. And he'll let you know, in case you forgot. It's time to meet Dustin and Edmundo, best friends forever! EDITOR'S NOTES: A couple of additional tech notes here. Ironically, although we all touted the great qualities of the alternate FX-heavy patron-exclusive renders at the end of this episode, there didn't end up being many moments worth adding sound effects to in this one. Additionally, due to some audio issues, this episode took a lot longer to edit than normal and I really wanted to get it out the door. So this time around, there is no alternate FX version. My apologies! If it's any consolation, since we just finished recording it, I can promise you that the next episode has a lot more effects. Also, due to the normal biological needs of the human body, Alex had stepped away from the table right before we closed out, and thus wasn't present when we were introducing ourselves. In case you were not aware, Henry is played by Alex. Thanks, Alex! Drop us a line! You can follow us (sporadically) on Facebook, and we'd love to see you on our Discord Channel too.
