We’re back from shore leave, and the Canada/USA holiday weekend turned out to be a great time to take a little break, but of course the shenanigans started up right after that, cadets, so Capn’s Mike and Charles return with a roundup — including new MacBook Airs and Pros (but a retired MacBook), new iPads coming in the fall, a couple of proactive security moves by Apple, new adapters for Lightning, and of course the other big tech news of the week, such as Facebook shrugging off a $5B fine, Google contractors listening to your conversations, new Android malware, Intel playing coy with patents, and much more! There’s also a possible logic board swap for owners of the 2018 MacBook Air, some more Foxconn fail in Wisconsin, Xiaomi shamelessly rips off Apple’s Memoji, Microsoft reminds you what a dire flop Windows 1.0 was in a Stranger Things-worth tie-in with ... er, Stranger Things! Charles and Mike check to see if your phone can do 5G (it can’t), swear off (and at) an Amazon bedroom smartclock with a mic and camera in it, and geek out on GaN chargers, eGPUs, Thunderbolt 3 docks, and even FireWire. There’s also the amazing tale of a computer manual that is going to actually be read and considered valuable, cadets, so hang on tight to your Type 40 TARDIS documentation ... it could be your retirement fund someday!

It’s the Mac’s 35th birthday (and the iPad’s 9th!), cadets, so we light some candles and curse the darkness of possible new iPads, AirPods, and maybe even a new iPod Touch on the way. AirPower and the long-awaited wireless AirPods case were invited, but we can't be sure they’ll show up in time. The iPhone SE returned briefly and went away again — just like twerking! — and the iPhone XR was, no surprise, the best-selling new iPhone. Foxconn is hiring, Apple is (finally) paying winners, and Office 365 is on the Mac App Store, plus a lot more news. The world’s “most admired company” now has their payment tech taken at Taco Bell and the LA Metro, Australia finally gets on the bus, and T-Mobile backtracks on its “disruptive” video content. Co-Captain Mike is back on board and has opinions about stage lighting, docks and eGPUs, and ... you will be shocked ... he doesn't care for earnings reports. All this and more, cadets, so tune your scifi-earpieces to the latest episode for another hour of snackable tech content!

Special guest Malcolm Owen drops by to talk about his iPhone XR and urBeats 3 (and they were all yellow), Mike returns to dig deep into the 2018 Mac mini and MacBook Air, and Charles rains on the AirPods 2 rumor and lets everyone know about important new repair programs. All this along with more info about new graphics-card options for the 2018 MacBook Pro (and when eGPUs might be a better option), Samsung’s new flexible displays, Qualcomm losing some more (but still not crying uncle just yet), and everything you need to know about NaNoWriMo. No, it’s not a dialect of the Judoon, it’s about creating a novel or other long-form creative work — so get out your space pens, cadets (they write at any angle!), and get your scribble on!

Computer hardware is hard, so let's talk about RAM, disk speeds and eGPUs. Just because you rely on a computer for your job, doesn't mean you understand how it works. Olaf Blomerus came on so we could explore all the things we know and wish we knew about computer hardware. Whether you're on Mac or Windows, desktop or laptop, you're always better off having a deeper understanding of your machine. We cover when you need more RAM, who can benefit from more powerful graphics cards, multi-code vs single thread, and more. This is especially a must listen for anyone who edits video, photos or 3D and has been forced to wait on their computer when it seems like you shouldn't have to. Or it's the perfect episode if you're about to buy a new computer. We also talk about some of the details of my new MacBook Pro, which was a grueling process to configure. It had to be perfect! The Galaxy Note 9 and the Google Pixel 3 Plus both lose out to the nearly year-old iPhone X, Samsung puts out a smart speaker, Magic Leap stumbles, the Dell XPS 15 and Huawei Matebook challenge the 2018 MacBook Pro, and we have a double-length Engineering Report segment as well! But wait, there's more! Not all the news was centered around hardware this week -- TSMC got hit with a virus, Apple got hit with a court date in India, Google ruined co-captain Charles' day by going with "Pie" instead of "Pez" (yawn!), Qualcomm plays a $800 million "Get Out of Jail Free" card, Consumer Reports likes Apple Pay Cash, Verizon extends users' Apple Music trial, Apple gains more support for its Health Records initiative, more audio makers get on board with AirPlay 2, Movies Anywhere gains Microsoft, and NC teachers are getting new iPads. All this, and we're not done yet! Mike and Charles dicker over the "best Mac ever made," Palm is being resurrected from the dead, a passel of AppleInsider articles get some praise, while a raft of new eGPUs get the once over. Also inspected are the Lenovo Smart Display, the Elevation dark Qi charger, the Sonnet Echo 11 TB3 dock, and more! Eyes straight ahead, cadets, for the day of recording for the latest episode of Space Javelin coincides with both co-Captain Mike's birthday and a traditional day of bad luck and weird happenings! While there was plenty of good news on the horizon, the crew get a little ranty this week about GrayKey, the FBI, patent lawsuits, bad repair jobs, HomePod misinformation and pre-announcements! On the other hand, there's good news about CarPlay and Android Auto, an Apple triumph over a patent troll, a repair program for iPad Pro Smart Keyboards, some new TV and video series (current and forthcoming) to enjoy, a great deal on a good VPN, new gear to check out, and Apple's achievement of 100 percent renewable energy (the good ship Space Javelin, as you all know, also uses a never-ending resource: it runs entirely on hot air). Somewhere in the middle are notes of caution, such as the end of 32-bit apps on the Mac and old apps on the original Apple Watch, the potential danger of some third-party iPhone repairs, and experimental Nvidia and older Thunderbolt drivers for eGPUs that may not work for long, or well, or at all. From predictable pundits to laid-off leakers, Mike and Charles compress a week of tech news and more into one alternately grumpy and jokey hour! Assemble your Interocitors at warp speed, cadets, this is going to be a heck of a data dump!

Still yet more about the Apple TV 4K this week, in the context of comparing it to the FireTV 4K (and why it's not an obvious win for either device), but before all that Charles and Mike rant about the terrible reporting on the "hidden FM radio" inside iPhones, blasting both FCC Chair Ajit Pai (who should really do some reasearch) and the media for not questioning this nonsense. Senator Al Franken also gets lightly toasted for not retracting his "concerns" about Face ID after Apple's white paper answered all his questions. See? Space Javelin can be bipartisan! Speaking of epic battles, also discussed are Star Trek: Discovery and CBS streaming, plus the alternative known as The Orville (which is on free TV); getting to know the Files app (aka iCloud Drive) on iOS 11; the Apple community raising money for hurricane relief; and Apple Music hits 30 million paid subscribers. From there we cover a couple of trouble spots, including some APFS conflict with some games, and a possible (but unlikely) EFI vulnerability on some older or un-upgraded Macs. Then and only then do the crew get to the Apples vs. Amazons comparison, including all the new Echo stuff just released; Nvidia's new drivers for eGPUs and the Mac Pro; and Twitter's probably-bad idea of expanding the number of characters allowed in tweets. All this and a free rant about obnoxious product branding on stuff you've already bought, cadets, so tune in your interocitors and get ready to rumble!

Both Charles and Mike are back at their respective home bases, and that means it's time for a really meaty, in-depth argument -- er, discussion. Along with more news about eGPU support in macOS High Sierra, a lack of Target Display Mode in the latest iMacs (not a surprise), the hiring of Sony TV programming whizzes (a slight surprise), and the XBox One X (a surprisingly banal name), Charles and Mike get into it over the Whole Foods acquisition by Amazon. Mike thinks its great, while Charles worries about the financials. Don't worry, mom and dad don't fight for long: they join forces to condemn jump-the-gun reporting on Nest and HomeKit, and they agree that Apple's AirPort appears to be the most hack-resistant router on the market (so go get one while you still can). All that plus Charles' pathetic gamer status, Mike's pyramid of Wi-Fi power, nearly nothing about that Uber CEO that stepped down (and good riddance), plus 50 percent more cantankerousness than usual. Get on board, cadets -- this Space Javelin is plowing into the Neutral Zone!

Mike and Charles, now back on the regular schedule again, go over a few loose ends from WWDC, caution users on the latest betas, get into some iMac teardowns and the forthcoming iMac Pro in great depth, say "meh" to Planet of the Apps. They also discuss Apple's rejigging of iCloud storage plans (with a comparison to Amazon's retreat from "unlimited"), and chat a bit about the return of the numeric keypad (and lack of touchbar) in the latest Apple keyboard (also discussing a few others). All this and more, cadets, so climb on board for another adventure in modern recording!
