We recap what has been a busy couple of weeks on the local baseball scene, including Matt Lloyd being named Baseball Canada's Men's National Team Most Valuable Player, Fort McMurray being named hosts for more national tournaments, a local look at the Arizona Fall League and a multitude of college commitments. Then we get to our guest, and the mere mention of Joe Young brings back a lot of memories for baseball scouts and insiders from the early-1990s. The 6-foot-4, 210 pound righthander made life miserable for men's league athletes in Fort McMurray when he was just 14. In 1991, he won gold with Canada at the World Youth Baseball Championships, a team that featured Jason Dickson and Stubby Clapp among others. Two years later, Young was drafted in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, embarking on a six-year pro career that included the 1993 and 1994 seasons with the Medicine Hat Blue Jays. He played with and against some of the best young talent who later went onto become MLB players including Chris Carpenter, Roy Halladay and Michael Young, before retiring, coming back to the St. Paul area, where he is still involved in baseball and hockey. We sat down earlier this week to talk about his journey, including a chance encounter with ball player and future Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla.

Matt Lloyd, chief investment strategist at Advisors Asset Management, says that investors should expect lower long-term returns over the next decade, with buy-and-hold strategies struggling more than in the past, with the change largely caused by shortened cycles in various sectors of the market that force investors to be more selective and to tilt portfolios based more on the shifts driven by economic activity. Lloyd says while he believes value investing will carry the day, his primary focus is on quality at a reasonable price. Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst for BankRate.com discusses the fallout from the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Plus, Matt Zajechowski discusses a Forbes Advisor study showing which subscriptions Americans will keep and cut as they react to inflation this year, and portfolio manager Brian Mulberry of Zacks Investment Management looks at stocks with consistent earnings in the Money Life Market Call.

"Battling the inflationary aspect versus the growth aspect. The stickiness of wages and a strong jobs market makes things problematic. What is happening now in the Fed Fund's Terminal Rate? For the Federal Reserve to take control, they will have to have destruction on the demand side. A 50BPS interest rake hike is on the table now with the latest inflation reports. Investors need to be prepared and diversify their portfolios," says Matt Lloyd.

It's been a whirlwind few years for Calgary's Matt Lloyd. A 15th round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2019 MLB Draft, he spent his first pro summer split between the Rookie League Billings Mustangs and Single-A Dayton Dragons. Listen to his visit with us in 2019 here. 2020 was wiped out by COVID, and he split 2021 between the Red's Arizona Complex League squad and Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts. The Dawgs Academy and Okotoks Dawgs product began the 2022 season right where it left off with the Lookouts, but was shelved 20 games in with an ankle injury. He's spent the last few months getting it back into game shape, showing his progress regularly through Instagram stories. We caught up with the 26-year-old to talk about the challenges of the injury, his mindset throughout, and where he'd like to be in 2023.

Facebook have declared war on like and share baiting posts. If you use the word “like” or the word “share” or “comment” then their edge rank algorithm will give you less exposure in peoples newsfeeds.
