The market is getting crushed… SPY is down hard, QQQ is getting hit even worse, and suddenly the “stocks only go up” crowd is having a very different kind of day.In this breakdown, we react to a crash-warning video claiming the next stock market crash is tied to trillion-dollar IPOs, AI bubble risk, inflation, oil, and liquidity. But instead of buying into panic, we cut through the noise and focus on what actually matters: the data, the trend, and the trading plan. Then we run the first-ever OVTLYR Stock Gauntlet, ranking ten of Barchart's so-called top stocks to buy. And the results were rough. Names like AXTI, Western Digital, Lumen, Seagate, Bloom Energy, AAOI, Coherent, and others were getting hammered, with many showing sell signals, broken trends, or bad risk setups. But even on a nasty red day, money still rotates somewhere. And right now, consumer defensive stocks are starting to stand out. Grocery names like Albertsons, Kroger, and Sprouts were showing strength while the broader market sold off. That's the lesson: when tech and high-beta names get crushed, defensive rotation can create new opportunities.✅ Stock market crash warnings, AI bubble risk, inflation, and IPO pressure✅ First OVTLYR Stock Gauntlet ranking setup✅ AXTI, WDC, Lumen, Seagate, Bloom Energy, AAOI, Coherent, and more✅ SPY, QQQ, market breadth, sell signals, and risk management✅ Albertsons, Kroger, Sprouts, grocery stocks, and defensive rotationIf you're watching the market fall apart and wondering where money is rotating next… this one shows why having a plan matters more than chasing hype.Subscribe to OVTLYR for disciplined trading strategies that actually make sense.

Artificial intelligence is creating an explosion in data, and businesses are scrambling to work out how to store, manage and use it effectively.Sean Aylmer speaks with Jeff Park, ANZ Country Manager at Seagate Technology, about why data storage is becoming one of the most important parts of the AI economy. Jeff explains why businesses are suddenly rethinking the value of the information they’ve accumulated over decades, how data centres are evolving to cope with AI demand, and why “clean” and meaningful data matters more than ever.Seagate is a supporter of Fear & GreedFind out more: https://fearandgreed.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What's up everyone, today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Jason Dobbs, Head of Marketing and GTM Engineering at Kumo AI.(00:00) - Intro (01:24) - In This Episode (01:57) - Sponsor: MoEngage (02:54) - Sponsor: Knak (04:35) - How Undefined Data Definitions Make AI Confidently Wrong (08:18) - Why Context Engineering Replaces Prompt Engineering as the AI Bottleneck (12:59) - The Five Non-Negotiables for AI Readiness in Marketing Ops (15:42) - Why Marketing Ops Is the Context Architect in an AI-First GTM Stack (24:50) - Which Data Problems Block AI Deployment and Which You Can Ignore (28:29) - Sponsor: GrowthLoop (29:32) - Sponsor: AttributionApp (34:24) - What Goes Wrong When Agentic AI Optimizes Directly on Warehouse Correlations (42:02) - When to Ship AI Before Your Data Is Ready and When to Fix the Foundation First (48:23) - What GTM Engineering Actually Means When AI Automates the Middle (50:55) - How Jason Dobbs Decides What Deserves His Energy (53:08) - What Jason Is Reading: Intelligence History, Mind-Opening Nonfiction, and Dune Summary: Jason Dobbs spent 7 years assembling intelligence briefings for the President, and he says most AI failures in martech are the same problem he was solving in 2003: teams acting on context they never actually agreed on. In this episode, he breaks down the 5 non-negotiables of minimum viable readiness before you deploy any AI agent, explains why the marketing ops function is becoming more critical as AI takes over execution, and argues that unbounded AI autonomy creates more risk than warehouse data ever will. He also defends GTM engineering as a real discipline rather than a rebrand, and closes with a Dune analogy that lands better than it has any right to. If you think AI readiness is primarily a data engineering problem, this episode will change how you think about your team's role in it.About Jason DobbsJason Dobbs is the Head of Marketing and GTM Engineering at Kumo AI, where he leads go-to-market for KumoRFM, the world's first relational foundation model, which generates accurate, explainable predictions directly from warehouse data. Before Kumo, he served as Global Head of Revenue Marketing at Logitech, where ABM and advanced segmentation drove 40% of B2B sales revenue and 79% YoY ARR growth. He also co-founded Trypp, an autonomous UX research agent for continuous post-ship product monitoring, and has held marketing and analytics leadership roles at Seagate, HTC Vive, Apple, and Google.Jason spent 7 years as a United States Air Force intelligence officer, including work on the President's Daily Intelligence Briefing, an experience that shapes how he thinks about assembling trustworthy context for high-stakes decisions under uncertainty. How Undefined Data Definitions Make AI Confidently WrongEvery marketing ops team has heard the warning: AI is only as good as the data you feed it. You've nodded along. You've probably said it yourself. But the warning leaves out the most important detail, which is what the failure actually looks like when the model is running.Jason Dobbs knows what it looks like. He learned it from a crash. He rides high-speed F1 electric skateboards at 50 to 60 miles an hour, and he's fallen before. He can tell you he's never fallen the same way twice. When he greenlit agentic and predictive workflows at Kumo AI before the data architecture was ready, the failure followed the same logic: unexpected, and avoidable only in hindsight. The model returned results that looked operational. Scores came back precise. Summaries sounded coherent. Recommendations felt grounded. The failure was invisible to anyone who didn't already know what correct should look like. The weakness surfaced when someone pushed. Ask the follow-up question, why did you score this account, what data drove this decision, and the logic fell apart. The definitions feeding the model had never been agreed on across the business. Sales and marketing were not working from the same idea of what a qualified lead meant. The AI had scaled an unresolved internal argument into what looked like a confident answer.Jason traces the failure to a structural problem that predates any model decision. When a system cannot explain its own outputs, and when nobody in the room has standing to say what the correct answer should look like, you have built a very polished way to be wrong. That is dangerous precisely because it passes a surface inspection. People who were not close to the data trusted the output. Nobody pushed back. What he carried out of that experience was a reframe of what marketing ops actually produces. The shared definitions, the trusted data sources, the named owners, the workflow guardrails: that is the product. Every AI initiative sitting on top of unresolved questions about what the business means by its own terms will generate outputs that look credible right up until someone has to act on one. Speed to AI deployment and quality of AI output run in opposite directions for teams that skipped the definition work. The ceiling on any AI system is the clarity of what the business agreed it was optimizing for before anyone touched a model.Key takeaway: Run this diagnostic before signing off on any AI or analytics initiative: can a human reproduce the logic behind the output and explain who owns the decision that follows? If nobody can answer that cleanly, the system is automating an unresolved argument. Start by documenting shared definitions for your 5 most-used business terms (pipeline, qualified lead, active customer, opportunity, churn) and get explicit sign-off from sales, marketing, and ops before any model sees them. Why Context Engineering Replaces Prompt Engineering as the AI Bottleneck"Context engineering" is appearing in every AI strategy conversation right now. Scott Brinker devoted a report to it. Conferences are building entire tracks around it. The framing is right, but for most teams the phrase still points at a feeling rather than a concrete set of decisions.Jason Dobbs's version is more precise. "Fix the data" is the directive most teams have been living under for years, and the structural problem with it is that it makes the work sound like a single epic project with a clear endpoint, a Holy Grail that teams have been questing toward since before the first CRM went live. The warehouse always has gaps. The CRM always has problems. The right question is narrower: what minimum context and control does this specific workflow actually need to produce a trustworthy output? That reframe narrows the scope from an organization-wide data quality initiative to a workflow-specific requirements checklist. For any given AI decision, the context bundle has 6 components: the definitions the system is operating from, the data sources it has access to, the tools it can invoke, any memory it carries between sessions, the guardrails on what it can do autonomously, and the escalation path when confidence runs low. Those requirements are specific to each workflow. They're answered by asking exactly what this workflow needs, not by cleaning the warehouse in general. The shift from prompt engineering to context engineering reflects how the bottleneck has moved as the models matured. A prompt is the last instruction a model receives. Context is everything it's working with before that: the definitions, the data access, the scope of authority, the path back to a human when a decision exceeds what the system should make on its own. Teams tuning prompts while leaving the underlying context undefined are optimizing the most visible variable in the system while the one that actually governs quality sits untouc...

AI infrastructure companies continued their correction after soaring this month, previously supported by bumper earnings and ambitious guidance. Speculative long positions propelled AI infrastructure stocks higher in the period, prompting a pullback in risk sentiment and a cautious outlook by Seagate to spark a sharp pullback. Seagate EPS Up 115% and a Record Decade in Free Cash Flow — But Is the "Structural Shift" Actually Real?

Chip Stock Investor Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2026 13:56

Seagate just reported its best free cash flow in a decade. EPS is up 115% year over year. Revenue grew 44%. Management is calling it a structural shift — the idea that nearline hard disk drives have permanently broken out of their long secular decline thanks to AI data center demand. The numbers are real. The demand from hyperscalers is real. The Mozaic 4 platform shipping at 40-plus terabytes per device is real, and the Mozaic 5 roadmap targeting over 50 terabytes in late 2027 is genuinely impressive. When AI inference needs to recall vast quantities of stored data almost instantaneously, nearline HDDs are exactly the right tool, and Seagate is the dominant supplier. The $1.1 trillion in remaining performance obligations that cloud providers have committed to accelerated compute infrastructure means there is a multi-year demand runway here that is not in dispute. What is in dispute is whether calling this a structural shift — rather than a very powerful cyclical upswing driven by a once-in-a-generation CapEx surge — is accurate. Hard disk drive technology is mature. NAND flash and SSDs will continue taking market share over a long enough time horizon. And Seagate, for all its current dominance, is still a price-taker in a commodity memory market. The party is real. The question is how long it lasts and what you do while it's happening. In this excerpt from a Semi Insider live Q&A session, CSI works through every layer of Seagate's Q3 FY2026 results and close with something genuinely useful for investors: a three-part framework for handling a commodity stock that is over-earning in a cycle without knowing exactly when it ends. What we cover:— Seagate Q3 FY2026: $3.1B revenue (+44% YoY), 47% gross margin, EPS +115%— Best free cash flow in a decade: $953M and the operating leverage story— Q4 FY2026 guidance: $3.45B revenue (+41% YoY), EPS of $5 (+123% YoY)— The structural shift thesis: what management is claiming and what history says— Nearline HDD explained: why AI inference changed the demand equation— Mozaic 4 shipping now, Mozaic 5 roadmap to late 2027— Data center revenue: $2.5B of $3.1B total — hyperscaler dependency— The $1.1T cloud RPO and Seagate's multi-year runway— Reverse DCF: 56% EPS growth over three years — what it implies at $687— Three frameworks for handling an over-earning commodity stock— The 2028 risk: debt paydown, shareholder returns, and the inevitable washoutMembers of Semi Insider get the full live session including extended Q&A and the complete research. Amy is the CEO of Amazing at Home E-commerce consulting, a world renowned company that has helped thousands of brands launch private label products on Amazon and beyond. Amy's knowledge in product development, sourcing, marketing and sales have enabled her to help countless entrepreneurs develop their own successful businesses. So welcome to the show, Amy.Amy 00:00:25  Thank you for having me, Josh. I'm so excited to be here.Josh 00:00:28  I love what you talked about in terms of, you know, diversifying your risk with manufacturing and supply chain, and you've been able to find a lot of that in Mexico. So why don't you tell us more about Mexico? Why have you been so invested lately into, you know, sourcing from Mexico?Amy 00:00:49  Well, you know, it's really we used to go to China all the time. You can go twice a year during canton fair times. And and I still sourced from China. I, I love my manufacturers in China. They're wonderful people. They're very efficient.Amy 00:01:04  Really great. So I don't think that there's anything wrong with China. But at the end of the day, one of the biggest things that all of us have to realize is that we have options and, and that, you know, we don't ever whether it comes to only selling on Amazon, putting your eggs all in that one sales channel basket or only using FBA. What happened during the pandemic? Everybody who is only using FBA, their stuff got stranded. Meanwhile, we tripled our sales because we were able to merchant fulfill. so that's that's, you know, a huge learning thing. And so many people are learning that the restock limits, we talked about that, you know, like, hey, maybe we need to start digging more into these other sales channels so that we are able to drive more traffic to Amazon and have even greater restock limits now that things are changing. Right. so I think it's important to never put all your eggs in one basket and to always know what your your options are.Amy 00:02:04  And so Mexico was a natural, solution. Potential solution. If we look at injection molding and manufacturing around the world. Mexico's number two in injection will be right behind China. So, you know, when we look at even electronics, Latin America is just as high in electronics manufacturing as China is. And a lot of people don't realize that. One of our speakers on the Mexico trip, he's he's an engineer and he specializes in helping electronics companies move their supply chain from China to Mexico. big companies like Seagate have completely moved manufacturing to Mexico. Chinese factories, major factories in China are now reopening new facilities in Mexico. Why? It makes sense, right? It makes sense. You've got free trade. As long as your product is 70%, produced in Mexico. You've got the free trade. So that's a wonderful opportunity there. You actually have lower labor costs in Mexico than you do in China. China labor costs have risen. and you have a highly educated and motivated workforce in Mexico, which that is also changing in China quite a bit.Amy 00:03:25  We're all finding with our factories and, you know, talking with my factory owners, every year after Chinese New Year, a lot of their employees do not return. It's very hard for them because e-commerce has really taken off in China. And so a lot of these, you know, it used to be you can walk through a factory in China a few years ago, and they didn't have, you know, they didn't sell it in e-commerce. Nowadays, that's nearly impossible to find a factory that doesn't sell. And so the workforce is evolving in China, and it's causing some, some issues in terms of supply chain, not only for labour. for quality control, you know, so there's even the Chinese are looking for alternatives to different places to open up factories and things like that. So I think that all of us have to evolve. We look at any company that does not evolve with the times what we find. You know, we look at like the toys R us stories and we look at, you know, the top 50 retailers in the United States of America.Amy 00:04:30  Also on the e-commerce websites. So it's very important for us to pay attention and make sure that we're looking at, okay, what's next. And also when we look at, you know, how many. Issues did we have with, with, ports being backed up and with our. With our supply chain just being at a complete stoppage. and we were all talking about men. For Q4 this last year. You better get your stuff in by August, because there's no way the October timeframe is dead. because there was so much, you know, caught back up and everything prior to this Q4. So this year it was a little bit better. We had some catch up, but we really need to be paying attention. And so for me, I'm right here in San Antonio, Texas. I traveled to Mexico a lot. I love Mexico, and I always see all these things,...

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1273: GM is staying lean to outmaneuver the next sales slowdown. AI's appetite for memory chips could spark a new supply squeeze across autos and tech. Retailers are proving that telling better stories sells.Show Notes with links:General Motors is rewriting its inventory playbook, running 30–40% leaner and hoping that tighter supply, stronger cash flow, and faster decision-making could turn the next cycle into a competitive advantage.S&P Global Mobility forecasts U.S. sales down 2.5% to 15.8M units as affordability and softer EV demand weigh on the market.GM is targeting a 50–60 day supply versus the pre-pandemic 100+ days.Leaner inventory gives GM more flexibility to adjust incentives in a downturn without crushing profitability.Dealers have felt the squeeze, especially on affordable models, prompting GM to stage select Trax and Trailblazer units at ports to speed delivery.CFO Paul Jacobson summed up the strategy: “It's easier to do when you have less inventory in the system because you can just respond much more quickly.”Just when the auto industry thought it survived the chip crisis, here comes round two—this time powered by AI. Data centers are devouring global memory supply, forcing automakers to brace for tighter supply, higher costs, and potential production headaches.AI data centers are soaking up global DRAM and memory production, with Western Digital and Seagate already sold out of most 2026 capacity.Memory chip prices have jumped 90% quarter-over-quarter, prompting PC makers like Dell to raise prices 15–20%.Tesla's Elon Musk says the solution may be vertical integration: “We're going to hit a chip wall if we don't do the fab.”Retailers are doubling down on something we at More Than Cars know well—storytelling sells. Brands are shifting from simply stocking products to crafting narratives that spark emotion, build loyalty, and turn casual shoppers into long-term fans.Nordstrom says department stores no longer “introduce” brands—they help tell their story and build deeper consumer connection.Five Below credits curated social storytelling—merchandising and marketing working together—for stronger engagement with younger shoppers.Under Armour's Kevin Plank says brands must inspire emotion: “The world does not need another capable apparel and footwear manufacturer. January 2026 Sustainable Stock and ETF Picks… Covers the world's most sustainable companies, cleantech and renewable energy stocks, and more. By Ron Robins, MBA Transcript & Links, Episode 163, January 23, 2026 Hello, Ron Robins here. Welcome to my podcast episode 163, published on January 23, 2025, titled "January 2026 Sustainable Stock and ETF Picks." This podcast is presented by Investing for the Soul. Investingforthesoul.com is your go-to site for vital global, ethical, and sustainable investing mentoring, news, commentary, information, and resources. Remember that you can find a full transcript and links to content, including stock symbols and bonus material, on this episode's podcast page at investingforthesoul.com/podcasts. Also, a reminder. I do not evaluate any of the stocks or funds mentioned in these podcasts, and I don't receive any compensation from anyone covered in these podcasts. Furthermore, I will reveal any investments I have in the investments mentioned herein. I have a huge crop of 24 articles for you in this podcast! Note: Some companies are covered more than once. Now with so many articles to potentially cover, I've chosen 6 to quote from. The other 18 can be found with their titles and links on the webpage for this podcast edition. ------------------------------------------------------------- The 2026 Global 100 list puts speed in the spotlight The first article I'm quoting from is hot off the press and is about one of my favourite company rankings! It's titled The 2026 Global 100 list puts speed in the spotlight on corporateknights.com. The introduction is by Tristan Bronca. Here's some of what he says. "As the global economic transition accelerates, more companies are recognizing that sustainability isn't just good marketing – it's good for business, too… This was the animating spirit of the new methodology behind the Corporate Knights Global 100 ranking. The revised methodology introduces 'sustainable revenue momentum' to measure how fast companies are growing their sustainable revenues. A change of method Last year, sustainable revenues and investments together accounted for 50% of the score, and the other 50% was scored across 22 common environmental, governance and social performance indicators (KPIs) such as water use, emissions, workplace fatalities, and diversity on the board and among executives. The change has reordered the deck in a big way… A dramatic departure? 'In terms of performance, the G100 companies are back in top form, beating the benchmark MSCI AWCI index over the past year,' Toby Heaps says, referring to a stock market index of 85% of global investable equities across almost 50 countries." End quotes. Incidentally, the top five companies are ERG SpA (ERG.MI), Pandora A/S (PNDORA.CO), EDP Renováveis SA (EDP.LS), Fluence Energy, Inc. (FLNC), and Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. (2633.TW). ------------------------------------------------------------ Top 4 Clean Tech Companies to Watch in 2026 This next article brings us back to highly familiar territory. It's titled Top 4 Clean Tech Companies to Watch in 2026 on carboncredits.com and is by Jennifer L. Here are some brief quotes. "1. NextEra Energy (NEE) is the largest clean energy company in the world. It owns and operates wind farms, solar fields, and battery storage systems across the United States… NextEra has also increased its dividend for more than 26 years in a row. 2. First Solar (FSLR) is one of the top makers of solar panels worldwide. It uses a technology called thin‑film photovoltaic modules. These panels are lighter, use fewer raw materials, and often perform better in hot climates compared to traditional silicon panels. The company builds large solar power plants that send power to utilities and corporate customers… Financially, First Solar is a strong player. Its market cap was around $24 billion in 2025, and it has shown double‑digit revenue growth. 3. Bloom Energy (BE) makes a special type of power generator called a solid‑oxide fuel cell. These units produce electricity efficiently and with low emissions. Customers include data centers, large buildings, and industrial sites that need reliable power without high carbon output. Bloom's fuel cells can run on hydrogen or biogas, which makes them flexible for future clean energy systems… Premium financial news reported that its stock jumped more than 410 % in 2025 after strong earnings results. 4. Plug Power (PLUG) focuses on hydrogen fuel cell systems. Its products are designed to replace traditional batteries and fossil fuels in heavy equipment, forklifts, and industrial vehicles. The company is also building hydrogen production and fueling infrastructure across North America and Europe. Its title is AI infrastructure stocks Lumentum, Celestica, Seagate beat Nvidia 2025 on cnbc.com. It's by Kif Leswing. Here are some brief quotes. 1. Nvidia has been the biggest infrastructure winner in the artificial intelligence boom, soaring in value by almost thirteenfold since the end of 2022 to a market cap of $4.6 trillion. 2. Sales surged 58% in the most recent quarter from a year earlier to $533 million.  3. Western Digital is one of three major hard drive manufacturers, along with Seagate and Toshiba. Shares of the 55-year-old company are up almost 300% this year… 'Data is the fuel that powers AI, and it is HDDs that provide the most reliable, scalable and cost-effective data storage solution,' CEO Irving Tan said in October on an earnings call… Revenue is expected to increase about 23% in fiscal 2026, with growth slowing to 13% in 2027. 4. Micron is one of three major memory producers, alongside Samsung and SK Hynix, but the only one based in the U.S… Analysts from Morgan Stanley said in a December note that Micron's results showed the best revenue and profit upside in the 'history of the U.S. semis industry' — aside from Nvidia. Revenue is expected to almost double in the year ending in August, before dramatically slowing to 24% in fiscal 2027 and less than 1% in 2028, according to LSEG. 5. Seagate is also benefiting from booming demand for storage. The stock is up 231% this year. Sales rose 21% to $2.63 billion in the company's fiscal third quarter, which ended Oct. 3. The company said at the time that 80% of its sales go to the data center market. 'There is no question that AI is reshaping hard drive demand by elevating the economic value of data and data storage,' CEO Dave Mosley said on a call with analysts… Analysts expect 21% revenue growth this fiscal year, followed by increases of about 15% and 6% in the next two years, according to LSEG. 6. Celestica founded in 1994 as an IBM subsidiary, makes switches that connect networks together and manage the data and traffic flowing through them. The stock is up more than 230% this year… Analysts at Goldman Sachs wrote in a note Friday that Celestica supplies parts for Google's ASIC. 'The company should benefit in 2026 from being the leading provider of Google TPU rack level solutions,' the analysts wrote."
