Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady. They recorded the episode at PostModern Spirits in the Old City while they were between two meetings for Marble City Opera. Stanton Webster, co-owner of PostModern Spirits, is helping Kathryn and Frank prepare for the Pop-Up Opera Party, which is Marble City Opera's biggest fundraiser of the year. Tickets are on sale now at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets Frank and Becca James hosted the livestream of the Karns Christmas Parade. You can watch the video at https://www.youtube.com/live/8Rmwgy7nF-c?si=hKAMDpHEhwP4xOOF Frank and Heather Waliga announced the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade. Before the parade, they walked among the participants and posed for a photo with a horse. Kathryn directed a production of Hansel and Gretel and sang the role of the Mother for Wichita Grand Opera. The children in the chorus called her Aunt Kathryn. Kathryn and her brother drove from Houston to Dallas in his Tesla. She said the car drives itself better than her brother drives it. She grabbed the closest items to use as weapons when she went downstairs to investigate. Frank wonders if there could have been an earthquake but Kathryn checked and found there was not one. Frank's friend Bean and his podcast partner Allie were talking about people who were afraid of missing a big earthquake. Frank was out of town and missed the biggest earthquakes that occurred during the time he lived in Burbank. At WAVA, Frank arranged for a staff member to fly to the New Madrid fault when an earthquake had been predicted. At KROQ, he arranged for a staff member to fly to Buffalo to yell through a bullhorn at the Bills' quarterback. Frank will perform six character voices in the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville on December 14, 15, and 16, 2024 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Admission is free but parking costs $5. Frank saw the actors who play the Centurion and Herod at the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Dave Fennell. Frank and Dave used to improvise together as members of Einstein Simplified. The audio of the Frank & Friends Show is available on the website and smartphone app of FUN 105.9, where Frank is a deejay. On Fridays, he pays homage to one of his radio mentors by stretching out the phrase “it's Friday.” One of Dave's ancestors is John Tipton, who was a rival of John Sevier. Tipton was opposed to the State of Franklin. Frank recently wrote a question for Tennessee Scholars' Bowl about the State of Franklin. Dave is wearing a Hawaiian shirt that was a gift from his daughter. Frank buys neckties from the Ladies of Charity Thrift Store at 120 W. Baxter Avenue in Knoxville. Frank made plans to meet someone for coffee but forgot what the person looked like. He found the person's photo online. When the other guy arrived, he didn't eat or drink anything. They will host the Fair Food Throwdown on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. and the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. Dave doesn't like Circus Peanuts, which he spied on Frank's candy shelf. Frank defends Circus Peanuts, saying they are like the marbits in Lucky Charms. Frank's grandson Artie bought instant oatmeal, which Frank mixes with hot coffee instead of water. Artie also likes older candies like Circus Peanuts and Necco Wafers. Frank and his wife had hotdogs for dinner recently but there was very little spicy brown mustard left. Frank tried a new technique to get the last of the mustard out of the container. During dessert, he spilled some custard on the kitchen counter. Last year, Frank met Ricky the Dragon Steamboat at the Fair Food Throwdown. Frank's television interview with Ricky aired recently on East Tennessee PBS. You can watch the interview online at https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-ricky-the-dragon-steamboat-qiz67j/ Frank recorded an interview with Colleen Cruze of Cruze Farms. She got Frank to drink some buttermilk on the air. When Frank and Jere went to dinner at the Cruze Farm Pizza Barn with their grandchildren, an older gentleman complimented them on saying grace before their meal. Frank likes that he can still answer a call on his iPhone after it has gone to voicemail. He is irritated by police shows when the phone rings for an unusually long time before they answer. A recent survey claimed that iPhone users are more extroverted than Android users. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera, who will be performing as Olha in The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024 at St. John's Cathedral. Tickets and information at https://www.marblecityopera.com/ Children's tickets are free with the discount code PENNYARTS. Kathryn stopped by the final Einstein Simplified improv show of the year. At the show, someone in the balcony dropped their vape device on Frank's wife Jere. Frank performed in a game in which the other improviser could only read lines from an audience member's text messages. One time when Frank was reading the texts, the girlfriend of the phone's owner stormed out. Frank felt bad about breaking up the couple but Kathryn's perspective is that Frank saved the girl from a bad relationship. Kathryn performed in The Christmas Spider in Baton Rouge in December. There will be two performances in Knoxville on January 6, 2024. Each performance will feature different children in the lead roles. The first show is at 2:30 p.m. and the other is at 5:00 p.m. Kathryn's aunt gave her a gift that was in an empty box of chocolates. It was a small painting of Kathryn's dog. She once bought an empty gift box that was decorated to look like it contained an earwax candle. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). One time she had a flat tire but didn't leave him a voicemail. She kept calling back until he answered. Another time he yelled at Siri to answer. Kathryn suggests that he wear his AirPods all day. Another time when Jere couldn't reach Frank, she asked their next-door neighbor to check on him. Frank has tried using the Google AI program called Bard to help him write a letter of recommendation. He also tried asking it to write a theme song for the Frank & Friends Show. When Frank turned on his work computer, it was open to a Bing browser showing Christmas gift ideas. It appears to have done that by itself. The new season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl begins airing on January 8, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. on East Tennessee PBS. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who brought an assortment of Halloween candy. Some of the candies are on lists of the best or worst candy. Leave a comment about your favorite and least favorite candies. Sarah supported the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing a bucket hat at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com The receptionist at the building where Frank worked would bring a bowl of candy corn and peanuts to the office every October. Sarah thought she hated candy corn but was surprised that she likes the salty-sweet combination. A radio guy named Donnie Andrews posted a list of the “worst” Halloween candies on Facebook. Frank loves most of the candies on Donnie's list, especially Circus Peanuts and Good & Plenty, both of which Sarah hates. Frank is happy that Sarah brought Marshmallow Peeps Pumpkins, which he suggests roasting over a flame. The box of Dots has three rebus puzzles on the back. Someone inquired about hiring Einstein Simplified to create an Addams Family flash mob. Frank realized that the troupe members could play the main characters but that he would have to be Thing. Sarah prefers Halloween over Valentine's Day. Frank explains the Catholic origins of Valentine's Day and Halloween. Sarah says KitKats are the best Halloween candy. Frank would confuse them with Twix. Frank thinks Reese's pumpkins are among the best Halloween candies. Sarah mentions Reese's Pieces and impersonates E.T. Frank dislikes the Neil Diamond song about E.T. but has come to like other Neil Diamond songs. Frank shares some Frankenstein trivia. In the book, the monster's name was Adam. Frank got a text on a Tuesday night from a member of Einstein Simplified asking him to bring water. The members of the troupe forgot Frank was on hiatus. He's planning to return to the improv shows on November 21. Sarah jokes that Frank should see how many Marshmallow Peeps Frank can put in his mouth without realizing that he did that bit on the radio several times. Frank tells about inviting the Peeps Fun Bus to make an appearance at an Einstein Simplified show in 2003. Frank transferred from LakeFM to FUN 105.9 to play ‘70s and ‘80s hits. The new format on 104.9 is ‘90s & 2000s throwbacks. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who was trying to buy a Frank & Friends Show bucket hat as the show began. Sarah bought It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown decorations on Etsy. When Frank and his family lived in Burbank, they would go trick-or-treating in the neighborhood where Bob Hope and Joe Mantegna lived. Recently a family in Frank's neighborhood came by to sell school coupon books. Frank's wife Jere has been practicing the choral version of the song “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails for an upcoming concert by the Knoxville Choral Society. Someone asked Frank to emcee an event on the night of the concert, November 3, 2023. The concert will be across the street from the new Andy's Frozen Custard. Frank plans to take a seven-week hiatus from the comedy improv troupe Einstein Simplified during the time he will be recording the next season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl at East Tennessee PBS. Frank and Becca James emceed the Fair Food Throwdown at the Tennessee Valley Fair and then served as judges for the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge. Frank enjoyed the taste of a deep-fried Milky Way. Products like that are frozen before being deep-fried. Someone claiming to be intuitive warned about an illness. Frank was reminded of podcast interviews he heard with a Louisiana coroner and with a former Long Island psychic. Adam Ragusea made a YouTube video about the difference between yeast and cake doughnuts. Adam posted a photo of a Dairy Queen cheeseburger on Instagram. Frank went to the same Dairy Queen, showed them the photo and asked for the same thing. Frank wants to try the Leanne S'morgan cookie at Moonshine Mountain Cookies. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank says he is more comfortable on Diva Daylight Time. Frank was reminded of Kathryn when he heard a mention of Sazerac cocktails and when he used an empty whiskey bottle as a flower vase. In last Tuesday's Einstein Simplified show, Frank was in a singing game called Three-Headed Broadway Star. Jessica Brackeen, Sara Grace Peglow, and Frank each sang one word at a time. Kathryn's upstairs air conditioning unit isn't working properly. She thinks the repairman has not been up to the attic, where he would see the creepy painting of a child that has been there since before Kathryn and her husband moved in. She discussed it a year and a half ago in podcast episode 0025, “Attic Painting Ghost Girl” which can be seen at https://youtu.be/uP019i2sjNY Kathryn asked Frank to record a video of Marble City Opera's “Stalactites, Sopranos, and Stilettos" concert in order to make fifteen-second clips for social media. Frank recorded the entire one-hour concert rather than be responsible for choosing which fifteen seconds to record. Frank enjoyed the performance of Rossini's "Duetto buffo di due gatti” (The Cat Duet), which Kathryn rearranged as a trio to sing with Jacquie Brecheen and April Hill. A brief video clip is included. Frank tried to AirDrop the one-hour video to Kathryn but there wasn't enough memory on her iPhone. He offered to show her how to go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Messages, Review Large Attachments and then delete a few files but she wanted no part of it. You can also get several of Sam Venable's books, signed by the author and the new book by former UT counsel Ron Leadbetter. Dr. Bill Bass turns 95 on August 30, which is also “Missy Barrett Day: A Day to Do Good Deeds.” Frank received a Facebook message from the fictional character that said: “So, Mr. Frank, are you going to help out on International Missy Barrett Day: A Day To Do Good Deeds on Wednesday, August 30th by doing more good deeds than usual and telling people why you're doing more good deeds than usual and asking them to do more good deeds than they usually do?” Learn more at https://missybarrett.wordpress.com/ At a Marble City Opera production at the Old City Performing Arts Center, Frank and his wife sat behind an older woman who could not access the electronic program on her phone. Kathryn loaned her iPad to the woman, who accidentally tapped the messages icon. Frank could see that she was now reading a text conversation between Kathryn and Frank. Kathryn heard from a friend that their high school band was having a reunion. The friend told Kathryn that there is a private Facebook group with many photos, including several that include Kathryn. She makes Frank try to find her in three group photos. Subscriber April wore her Frank & Friends Show bucket hat to the “Stalactites, Sopranos, and Stilettos" concert. Jere took a photo of April with Frank and Kathryn. Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, who gets up early because of her kids. Frank fell back asleep and has been awake less than an hour. It used to take Frank at least an hour to go from “the floor to the door.” Frank wonders if Becca could learn to do improv after she compliments his participation in Einstein Simplified. Frank likes doing clean improv shows for kids and families. Becca and her husband went to a stand-up comedy show headlined by Caitlin Peluffo at the Square Room. Frank struggles to remember the name of Gary Jackson, who organizes the monthly Hip To Be Square comedy nights. Their website is https://hiptobesquarecomedy.com/ Becca is proud of the way Knoxville Area Transit assisted those affected by the tornado on August 7, 2023. They offered transportation to those who had to vacate their apartments. Frank points out that legitimate charities can usually do more with a monetary donation than with a case of water or other items. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). You can also get several of Sam Venable's books, signed by the author and the new book by former UT counsel Ron Leadbetter. The last time Becca visited, her home had no electricity for several hours. She had placed the contents of her refrigerator and freezer into coolers filled with ice. She deep-cleaned the fridge and reloaded it when the power came on, only to have the power go out again. Becca recalls attending a 2017 Tennessee Volunteers football game during a strong storm that knocked down part of the scoreboard. It also knocked down a tree at her house and caused a power outage. Becca points out that Bradford Pear Trees are structurally weak. Frank says that you used to be able to donate them to the zoo and they would be fed to elephants but Zoo Knoxville has sent all its elephants to a sanctuary. Frank spits his peach pits into his yard and has discovered three seedlings that could grow into peach trees. Becca wants to go to Andy's Frozen Custard to try the limited-time Cannoli Thunder Concrete. She and her family had ice cream for dinner while attending the Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival. Frank is considering going to the Monroe Life Balloon Festival in Vonore over Labor Day weekend. Frank Murphy is joined by Becca James, a former radio colleague who is now the Director of Marketing for Knoxville Area Transit. Becca broke her thumb while playing softball. She has three screws and a pin in her thumb. Becca asks about the wooden eggs that Frank and his family received at the White House Easter Egg Roll over thirty years ago. At the time, Frank worked for WAVA deejays Don & Mike, who were invited to autograph eggs alongside other Washington media personalities. Frank mentions the security procedures at the White House and the Capitol which reminds him of security at advance screenings of movies. Attendees would have to leave their smartphones with the security guards so they couldn't record a bootleg video of the movie. Becca has traveled to Las Vegas twice in the past few weeks. One trip was for business and one trip was a vacation with friends. She saw Cirque du Soleil on one trip and Jimmy Buffett on the other trip. Frank will reprise his cremation lecture at an event in July. Frank is preparing to record six more episodes of Up Close with Frank Murphy for East Tennessee PBS. He was surprised to see his picture on the cover of the April program guide, between the cast of Call the Midwife and actor Kit Harington. Becca is surprised to learn that Frank's wife Jere makes a spreadsheet for his Tennessee Scholars' Bowl wardrobe. Frank posted a joke on social media that he went to a “staff meeting” at the Tennessee Theatre. The members of Einstein Simplified canceled one of their Tuesday night shows to attend Whose Live Anyway?, a stage show featuring cast members of the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? The show was sold out and Frank wondered if the audience would come to see Einstein Simplified on a Tuesday night. Becca was impressed by the singing in Whose Live Anyway? When Frank has to sing in an Einstein Simplified show, he tries to use the tune from a Christmas carol or an opera tune such as “La donna è mobile” from Rigoletto. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady. He recently recorded some See More Smokies episodes with fashion model Victoria Henley. Frank and Kathryn saw each other at Brandon Gibson's funeral. Kathryn and her husband James spent Thanksgiving with Frank and his wife Jere. Kathryn produced Amahl and the Night Visitors at Opéra Louisiane. They will do a different Christmas opera next year. Frank saw a picture from 2013 of Kathryn in Marble City Opera's production of The Gift of the Magi. Frank will emcee Marble City Opera's fundraiser on Saturday at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens and Arboretum. Kathryn will sing during the event as will ten other opera singers who have performed with Marble City Opera over the last ten years. Tickets are available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets Kathryn will sing in a production of Cabildo in Iowa. The opera was written by Amy Beach in 1932. Kathryn will play a ghost. The Cabildo is an actual building in New Orleans that was once a prison. Frank says he did an opera-based scene in Tuesday's Einstein Simplified improv show. Kathryn gave her niece a backstage tour during Amahl and the Night Visitors at Opéra Louisiane. Frank likes the backstage area at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. Frank bought a discounted ticket to the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's Clayton Holiday Concert. During the show, Frank got a text and a call from his home-alarm monitoring company. The motion detector had triggered the alarm. Frank's next door neighbor was also notified because he is listed as Frank's emergency contact. Frank contacted four more of his neighbors to ask them to look around while the police were on the way. Frank thinks the heating system might have caused the curtains to billow under the motion detector. Kathryn wonders if it could have been triggered by a mouse. She is workshopping an opera about grave robbing called Doctor & the Devils. Kathryn gave her husband a massage gun and a karaoke microphone for Christmas. Frank asks if James is a singer in addition to being an actor and director. Kathryn says James does not usually sing but he actually did sing karaoke for two hours, including David Bowie songs. Frank plays a lot of David Bowie songs on LakeFM, which reminds him that the audio podcast feed of the Frank & Friends Show is now available in LakeFM's mobile app. https://www.lakefm.com/how-to-listen/ Jere sings with the Knoxville Choral Society. Frank attended their Fall concert at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Frank sat next to a man in his ‘80s who was visiting Knoxville. The man's sister is also in the Knoxville Choral Society. In a matter of minutes, the older man tells Frank that he works as a jazz pianist at bars and restaurants in the San Fernando Valley. The man says that he composed the song “Spooky” which Frank knew as a song by Classics IV. The man's name is Harry Middlebrooks. He told Frank that he had appeared on The Lawrence Welk Show. Frank relates that he once met a singer named Ava Barber who used to be on the Welk show. Harry says, “I'd love to talk to Ava! Frank Murphy is joined by comedian and author Alex Stokes. Alex is known as “The Beer Comedian.” His “Waking Up in a Brewery” podcast can be found at https://www.facebook.com/wakingupinabrewery or through his website, https://www.beercomedian.com/ Frank got a little sunburned and a little bit of a sugar rush while recording a video at the Tennessee Valley Fair. The video will be on YouTube later this week. It includes “Nana's Gooey Butter Funnel Cake” and an appearance by Fairest of the Fair Katelyn Fedrick. Alex credits Frank with getting him booked for a clean comedy gig at First Night Knoxville. Alex didn't have clean material at the time and had to write a new act. Frank read that comedians can make a living by doing a clean act at the “three Cs” - corporate, college, and cruise gigs. Some comedians would rather work blue so they can shock the audience into submission. Alex Stokes went into comedy full-time around the same time that his wife Jenny went to school to become a veterinarian for zoo animals. Her favorite animals are tigers. Frank went to a photo shoot with two live tigers and radio hosts Mark & Brian. Frank performed in an improv show with Einstein Simplified at Creepy Con. He went backstage 30 minutes before showtime and felt out of place as the only person not wearing a costume. In the show, Frank had to play an expert on the movie Beetlejuice, which he has only seen once. Alex found it challenging to improvise when he was pulled onstage for a bit with Einstein Simplified. He is used to preparing his jokes in advance. Alex says some stand-up comics hate improv. Frank knew a Vegas comedian who hated improv and prop comics. Frank says improvisers prepare for their shows by learning the rules of improv. They avoid denials and questions, for example. They have to listen, accept, and support their scene partner. Alex tells about the value of having an opening act to warm up and help gauge the crowd. Dive bar gigs are hard when the crowd isn't expecting comedy. One time another comedian got in a fistfight with an audience member right as Alex was about to go on. As Alex started, someone shouted out a reaction to the breaking news on the TV over Alex's head. Frank asks Alex if he is sad to hear someone famous died. Frank says he isn't said to hear they died, he is sad that they actually died. Maxx on the way to the podcast. Frank saw an article titled “The TJ Maxx where Amber Heard was spotted shopping is actually a celebrity hot spot — and a Hamptons secret gem.” Avi will visit T.J. Maxx when she is traveling. Frank admits doing the same thing at Kohl's. It's easier to find orange clothing outside of Knoxville. Avi has purchased orange jewelry out of town. Frank says that UT orange (PMS 151) helps you blend in like camouflage in East Tennessee. Avi left the tags on the shirt in case she decides not to keep it. Frank tried on shirts at a grocery store with a clothing department and started to sweat when his size was too tight. At other stores, the same size might be too loose. Frank broke a chair onstage by bouncing on it during an Einstein Simplified show. Audience member Heather took a picture at the moment that Frank realized the seat of the chair had cracked. As a kid Frank disliked posing for photos. A local bank had a promotion offering families a chance to pose for a portrait in the bank's lobby. Frank got upset at how he looked. His discomfort was visible in the photo. He stormed off and walked two miles home rather than ride with his parents and sisters. Avi was allowed to play outside unsupervised until sundown. In Frank's childhood neighborhood, one of the moms would ring a bell when it was time for her kids to come home. Other moms told their kids to come home when the streetlights came on. Avi and her mom enjoy visiting museums in Washington, DC. Frank goes to the DC suburbs so often that it doesn't occur to him to go downtown. Avi also likes playing tourist in Knoxville. She has several favorite restaurants. Avi likes to go to Curious Dog Hotdogs & Sandwiches in downtown Knoxville. Frank thought the spicy mustard and sauerkraut dog at D & B's Hot Dogs and Ice Cream reminded him of New York. Avi says Brazilians put mashed potatoes and potato sticks on their hot dogs. Prior to moving to Knoxville, Frank would not have known to put coleslaw on a barbeque sandwich. Frank only wants to eat Peruvian chicken when he's in the DC area. He would rather find a local restaurant than a national chain. He likes to eat at Three Li'l Pigs Barbeque in Daleville, Virginia, when traveling along I-81. Avi likes supporting local businesses and their entrepreneurial spirit. When Frank and his wife Jere went out to dinner before going to see Bright Star in Morristown. They ordered veal parmesan at The Little Dutch Restaurant, which has been there since 1939. Avi recommends that Frank and Jere make an excursion to Chattanooga. She goes there often to visit the “medieval barber,” the guy she is dating. Avi suggests Frank take a Myers–Briggs personality test online. Her type is found in only 1.7% of women. Frank gets paralysis by analysis when trying to think up a new password for a website. This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy's friend Erik Dobell is co-hosting today's episode. Erik is a mentalist. His show, Impossibilities - Magic, Mind-Reading, and Mayhem! is in the Iris Theater at the Gatlinburg Space Needle. Get tickets at https://www.impossibilitiesshow.com Erik has a friend who pays to subscribe to pizza-making videos online. Frank prefers to watch Adam Ragusea for free on YouTube. Frank's interview with Adam Ragusea will air on East Tennessee PBS on Tuesday night (actually Wednesday, July 27) at midnight. Erik has a Carl Sagan pin on his jacket. Many people cannot recognize Sagan. Eric also has a pin for members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Erik is wearing a t-shirt that Frank bought for the movie Fish Bait. Frank was wearing the shirt when his character was eaten by a giant catfish. Members of Einstein Simplified starred in Fish Bait as the fishing buddies who end up at Fear Hollow Marina. They improvised their lines. The movie is available free with ads on Tubi. https://tubitv.com/movies/638830/fish-bait In an episode of The Office, Michael Scott takes an improv class but does all the things improvisers are trained not to do. In real life, Steve Carell is an excellent improviser. There are some improv games designed to break one of the improv rules such as the game “Questions Only.” The Secret City Improv Festival has a head-to-head tournament called the Slayden Cup, named after Bill Slayden, a founding member of Einstein Simplified. This year's festival will be September 30 and October 1, 2022. Erik wonders why he got an empty folder for his high school diploma. Frank says that's normal. Most schools hold back the actual diplomas until after the ceremony to make sure everyone has met all requirements. Erik wonders if his daughter will be interested in sports. Frank mentions that ballet is as intense as a sport. Frank played the old man in several Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association performances. When Frank passed the age at which his father died, his sister texted, “Congratulations. You win at breathing.” Frank's next goals are to outlive his paternal grandfather, his uncle, and his maternal grandfather. Frank likes to say that he wants to be buried so that he is exhumable. Erik is from Elmira, New York. He met his wife when living in North Carolina. They moved to Gatlinburg because of his show. He is a mentalist. Mentalism is a branch of magic that involves mind-reading. The magicians who do elaborate stage shows are generally called illusionists. Erik once worked as a mime. Frank agrees that pantomiming is difficult. Improvisers try to do realistic pantomime when holding imaginary objects. The tv show Police Squad had hilarious ending scenes in which the actors would freeze but something in the scene kept moving. For example Leslie Nielsen was pouring coffee when the scene froze and the coffee cup overflowed. Frank loves the Police Squad theme. Erik likes ‘80s cartoon themes. Frank used to watch reruns of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends. Erik jokes that poor Rocky had a sad end. Frank appeared in parody videos for MoonPie. He played a character named Chandler Skootch who was afraid space aliens would invade Earth to get more MoonPies. Frank Murphy's friend Mean Jean is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is working at Opéra Louisiane in Baton Rouge. Mean Jean's catchphrase on social media is AYYYYEEEE. Frank noticed that Jean added a ™ symbol as a joke. It's pronounced like the letter A stretched out, similar to Fonzie's catchphrase. Frank and Mean Jean used to work at the same radio cluster. When Frank got a job on 104.9 LakeFM, he told his friend Steve to listen. Steve said the station played too much rap music, which confused Frank. It turns out that Steve was listening to Mean Jean's station, Hot 104.5. Frank and Jean were chosen as “Leadership Champions” when they worked for The E.W. Scripps Company. Jean asks Frank to remember the five leadership principles from The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Frank said they started with the letters MICEE and recited: Model the way Inspire shared vision Challenge the process Enable others to act Encourage the heart The leadership class went on retreat to Camp Joy in the woods of Ohio. The camp is normally used for special needs kids. For an after-hours party, Jean brought along a jar of orange Ole Smoky Moonshine. The other people barely took a sip of moonshine but Mean Jean and Frank took a big swig because they knew that the ‘shine was 40 proof or less. As Mean Jean arrived, Frank's wife Jere was leaving with their grandson Artie Rocket. Artie wanted to go to McDonald's but Jere surprised Artie by taking him to Chuck E. Cheese. Artie loved the songs from Something Rotten! and memorized some of the lyrics. At least two of the songs mention body parts. Frank and Jere tried to get Artie to replace the bad words with something else before he goes home to his parents. Mean Jean lives in downtown Knoxville. One Tuesday night, Jean surprised Frank after an Einstein Simplified improv show. He snuck up behind Frank and hugged him. Mean Jean has a new rule for house guests. They are only welcome Thursday night through Monday morning. The air-conditioning at Jean's apartment is broken. Mean Jean went to a co-worker's wedding. Frank was once that same co-worker's Secret Santa. He ordered a box of Drake's Devil Dogs online as her gift. He also bought a box for himself. Frank bought a pole saw at ALDI and used it on Father's Day. He cut some branches that were hanging over the fence and dropping seed pods into the pool. Jere was a little worried so Frank joked, “take a picture for the obituary.” Jere started to get her phone to take a picture. Frank always hated yard work but has been getting it done nevertheless. He has two houseplants that he has kept alive since receiving them in a sympathy floral basket from the radio cluster when his mother died. Frank had so many fig cuttings in the Spring that he planted some in the area that his wife told him not to use. Most of them died but two have taken root and started growing. He needs to transplant them before his wife notices. An old man approached Frank in the church parking lot and warned him to never use his key-tag remote to lock the car. The man said that criminals would intercept the radio signal and open the car while the driver is away from the vehicle. Mean Jean says he will use his car remote when he leaves Frank's house. Jean and his friends played a game on a road trip. Each passenger could pick one CD to play in the car. Only the person who picked the CD was allowed to skip a song. Frank Murphy welcomes Kathryn Frady back from her vacation. Frank is concerned that they have 665 YouTube subscribers and he hopes they will get well past 667 subscribers quickly. Frank enjoyed Kathryn's performance as Julia Lowell in Marble City Opera's production of The Copper Queen. You can rent a video stream of the opera at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets Frank surprised Kathryn by giving her a congratulatory hug after opening night of The Copper Queen. Frank sat behind Mary Costa, an opera singer who was the voice of Aurora in Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Reviewer Alan Sherrod of Arts Knoxville called the show “operatic gold.” Kathryn feels depressed when a show ends, especially when she is involved as both singer and producer. Kathryn just became the General Director of Opéra Louisiane in addition to her job at Marble City Opera. Frank has started lining up guest co-hosts for when Kathryn will be in Baton Rouge. Frank used to buy 40 pounds of chlorine tablets for about $80. A problem at the factory caused a shortage and a price increase to about $200. Frank switched to liquid chlorine, which he could get for about $6 a gallon at Lowe's. Frank and Jere took their grandsons Timmy and Charlie to Lowe's to buy chlorine using gift cards Frank bought at Kroger, which gave him bonus gas points. Lowe's could not complete the purchase because they said their gift card reader was down. They drove to another Lowe's but that store's gift card reader was down too. Frank then went to a nearby Home Depot and bought liquid chlorine for only $4.50 a gallon. Marble City Opera is working on an opera about body-snatching. Grave robbers used to dig up bodies for use in medical research. Dr. Bill Bass started a collection of donated modern skeletons at the Body Farm. Kathryn and her husband took a vacation to Santa Rosa Beach in Florida. Kathryn's brother and his family went surfing in the Gulf of Mexico. Frank's family used to go to ocean beaches on Long Island. Frank remembers the surf as being rough and uninviting. Frank had hoped to come to an artist reception after the final performance of The Copper Queen. He had a paid comedy improv gig that night. Einstein Simplified was hired to perform at the reception after a renewal of vows ceremony. The brewery that was supposed to host the event canceled on the bride so they could show a Vols baseball game instead. The improv gig was moved to the married couple's house in South Knoxville. Frank's maps app went haywire and told him to make a U-turn, which turned out to be incorrect. He drove up as the ceremony was underway on the front lawn. Frank's friend Sarah Roberto is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Sarah used to be the Director of Marketing for the Tennessee Valley Fair. Sarah mentioned that one of her former co-workers lives on Frank's street. Sarah is “team no pool.” Frank is shocked but admits that swimming pools are money pits. If you're not putting water and chemicals into it, you're pulling debris and critters out of it. Sarah's husband is a lawyer and politician. Her father-in-law is one of the scientists who discovered the element Tennessine (Symbol: Ts Atomic number: 117). Frank was excited to meet Dr. Roberto at a Super Bowl party. Frank is mentioned in chapter 8 of the new Missy Barrett book, The Case of the Thoughtful Thief by Elyse Bruce. He will read the chapter aloud on Thursday, April 28 at 3pm in the King Family Library, 408 High Street, Sevierville, TN. Sarah offers to “Mapquest directions” to the King Family Library. She then realizes that no one says Mapquest anymore. Frank prefers Google Maps. Frank mentions Amazon Alexa. Sarah responds that she bought a new car with an audio assistant. Frank asks if you say Siri or Alexa. Sarah says “Mercedes, turn on my heated seats.” Sarah has a TikTok account for her dog Baby Bear. The dog is a “CavaPoo,” which is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel mixed with a poodle. Frank remembers when Sarah had low-paying jobs for non-profit organizations and she used him as a reference for a new job. Since then, she's earned her MBA and gotten a better-paying job in the tech field. Frank was walking along Union Avenue on his way to Scruffy City Hall to perform with Einstein Simplified. He accidentally inhaled some saliva and had to cough it out. Some people half a block away turned and gave Frank a nasty look because he had coughed. If Frank is near someone at church who coughs, he often gives them one of his Luden's Throat Drops. Sarah thinks that Luden' should become a sponsor of the Frank & Friends Show. Frank's friend Kira Cupp is filling in for Kathryn Frady again today. Kira teases Frank by whispering ASMR style. The first time Frank came to Knoxville was on the Tuesday before Easter in 2002. That night he attended an Einstein Simplified comedy improv show. He came to town to do an on-air audition with Phil Williams. During the audition, he did a bit that involved putting as many Marshmallow Peeps in his mouth as possible. Kira challenges Frank to do a monologue based on the word “venue.” Frank tells the story of working at Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts until it burned down. He got a job in radio and needed to draw a crowd to a venue called The Wax Museum. He invited friends from Wolf Trap, one of whom brought along Jere, which is how Frank met his wife. Frank asks Kira to do a monologue on jelly beans. She cannot eat jelly beans because she is now a vegan. Before she was vegan, her family gave her a game called BeanBoozled, which involves nasty-flavored jelly beans. Marshmallows are not vegan-friendly because they contain gelatin. Kosher marshmallows are made with fish gelatin instead of the kind that comes from farm-animal collagen. Frank realizes that Kira can't eat the fig jam that he and Jere make because it contains Jell-O. Kira says it's hard to find a house because so many people are moving here and prices are going up. Frank says Knoxville is much less crowded than Northern Virginia. Kira might like to buy an older house. When Frank had his roof replaced, the crew discovered that the old roof didn't have a proper roof vent and had multiple layers of shingles. Kira points out that more and more people work from home. Frank works from home in multiple spaces. He records the podcast by the fireplace but edits it in the den. He records his radio voice-tracks in the kitchen so that he can stand up. Kira asks how Frank can talk so fast and challenges him to recite a tongue-twister. He says, “I slit a sheet, a sheet I slit. Upon a slitted sheet I sit.” Frank invited Kira to co-host after she sent him a picture of a little fig tree that she and her parents purchased. Frank may have sent Kira too much information about growing figs. Frank is propagating dozens of fig cuttings both in his yard and in flower pots on the porch. Kathryn's birthday is one week away. Frank says today is his ¾ birthday. A friend of Frank's would always recommend Mr. Boston Rock & Rye for a sore throat. After straining his voice during an improv show, Frank tried to make his own Rock & Rye with a shot of rye whiskey and a spoonful of crystallized honey. Kathryn and one of her high school friends went to dinner and an Einstein Simplified comedy improv show. Kathryn's friend is interested in learning more about the Body Farm. Kathryn's parents invited her to come to Texas for a family event but they didn't really expect her to make the trip. Frank invited someone to his wife's birthday party in Virginia, even though they couldn't attend. He didn't want them to feel left out. Kathryn used DoorDash to send two slices of cheesecake to her parents. Frank had difficulty unsubscribing from FTD's emails after his mother died. Kathryn's husband doesn't like sending flowers because they will die. Frank still has a houseplant that he received in a sympathy bouquet when his mother died. Kathryn found the instructions “col canto” in part of the score of The Copper Queen. It means that the conductor and orchestra must follow the lead of the soloist. She sent a photo of it to the conductor, saying it was her favorite part of the score. Kathryn will play Julia Lowell, a ghost who haunts The Copper Queen hotel. Happy Mardi Gras! Frank serves Kathryn some fig jam and toast as promised during the fig talk in the last episode. Kathryn thinks Frank could sell his fig jam and fig tree cuttings. Frank has had several crews of home-improvement workers at his house over the past few months. One of the workers asked to come inside to use the bathroom. Generally, they stand behind a tree. Frank scrubbed the bathroom after the worker used it because Kathryn was on her way over. Frank is not bothered by dead things but is grossed out by poop. Kathryn reveals that Frank has a photo of himself at a funeral. He saved a screen grab from a livestream of a funeral for a woman who was a “ballet mom” and “improv mom.” Her daughter was in the Nutcracker and is now in the Oak Ridge High School improv group. Kathryn admits that she will treat the spouse of a friend as if she knows them well. An introverted husband of a friend seemed surprised that Kathryn acted so familiar toward him. Frank spoke with two strangers at last week's Einstein Simplified show. One was visiting from Ohio and the other from North Carolina. The women said that Einstein Simplified was “legit funny.” Einstein Simplified was in a movie called “Fish Bait” that is now available on Tubi. https://tubitv.com/movies/638830/fish-bait Frank took screen grabs from the PBS Passport link to his interview with Kathryn on “Up Close with Frank Murphy.” Here is the episode link: https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-frank-murphy-xqr1vv/ This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Kathryn asks Frank if they have Frank & Friends Show business cards. Frank has ordered some from Byron's Printing for a Valentine's Day event with Dr. Bass. The Frank & Friends Show is a media sponsor of this year's Akima Cabaret, a fun night of musical comedy, presented by the Akima Club of Knoxville. This year's theme is “The Roaring ‘20s - When Decades Collide.” The Akima Cabaret is at the Mill & Mine on February 18 and 19. Proceeds benefit dozens of area charities. Get your tickets before they're gone at https://www.akimaclub.org Kathryn has been lost in thought for the past few days. Frank says she should say she's meditating. She has a Marble City Opera production coming up on February 24. She calls herself a portfolio artist because she has a lot of different facets to her career. Frank put on some bronzer before recording a video on a Tuesday. He left the bronzer on when he went to perform with Einstein Simplified. Some of the guys referred to Frank's bronzer during their improv scenes. Frank thought it looked good and will wear it again this week. Frank was curious about a man buying hundreds of bananas at Sam's Club. He wonders why someone would buy so many bananas. Kathryn suggests that he might own several monkeys. Kathryn recalls that there is a tiger sanctuary in East Tennessee. Frank once arranged for some tigers from a sanctuary in California to be in a photo shoot with Mark & Brian of KLOS. Kathryn once petted baby lions in Africa. Frank mentions that Zoo Knoxville has baby lions. Frank asks Kathryn where she keeps her butter. She keeps it in the refrigerator. Frank and his wife Jere have been keeping their butter at room temperature. Jere wants a Polish butter dish for her birthday. Frank has noticed that the expiration dates on milk containers seem to be further away than they used to be. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Before starting a hike, Krisha texted Frank to tell him where she was going. Krisha has made Frank one of her emergency contacts and wanted him to know her whereabouts. Frank wants to know how long to wait before calling the police. Or should he drive to the scene? You can set up your phone to call or text your emergency contacts. Check the settings on your device. Most phones will notify your emergency contacts when you press the power button five times rapidly. Frank puts his foot in his mouth when he says he's happy to be Krisha's emergency contact because this show means the world to him. He wonders if he is now obligated to make Krisha his emergency contact. Frank's wife Jere wanted to win a Valentine's prize at her job. They had a contest for the cheesiest clean pick-up lines. Jere asked Frank to submit some cheesy pick-up lines because the improv troupe Einstein Simplified plays games called “Pick-Up Lines” and “Pick-Up Artist.” Frank misses performing improv on stage. Merry 11th day of Christmas! Frank's wife Jere has redecorated the set for January. Krisha has a friend who listens to the podcast but doesn't watch the YouTube videos and was puzzled by the slurping sound when Krisha drank her hot chocolate in episode 64. Frank asked his wife for the same Visit Knoxville snow globe he had given to Krisha. He got a little choked up when he saw the representation of Patrick Sullivan's Saloon in the snow globe. Krisha & Frank both performed at Patrick Sullivan's with the comedy improv troupe Einstein Simplified. Frank gave his wife the game Knoxville-opoly for Christmas. He played the game with her but he kept getting sent to “traffic jail” and he lost the game by a wide margin. Frank bought an outfit for Jere from her Amazon Wish List. He reused a gift tag with her handwriting that said “To Jere From Frank.” She was surprised that he bought the fancier outfit from the choices on her list. Krisha had a lovely Christmas in the snow with her kids. They enjoyed watching the Pixar film Soul. Frank avoided the snow as much as he could. Krisha caught herself saying “parent things” when she took her kids to Zoo Lights at Zoo Knoxville. Today's episode is sponsored by the Hutch & Howard Group of Keller Williams Realty. Krisha & Frank went to the funeral for Bill Slayden, a founding member of Einstein Simplified. Krisha had planned on paying her respects at the visitation and leaving before the service. Frank and his wife planned on staying for the whole thing. There were seven comedy improvisers in attendance and they all sat together and joked about having enough people to put on a show. Their friend Dave said that Frank “has no chill.” Krisha started getting emotional during the eulogies. Frank said he had a great time. Dave said the people behind the comedians moved to other seats. Frank points out that Dave's time on the phone with Krisha & Frank is the most he has heard of the podcast. Krisha felt sorry for Frank's wife because she had to put up with the joking by all the improvisers who hadn't seen each other since March. Krisha says their joke level was turned up to 11 and that they were using comedy to numb their emotions. Krisha went home from the funeral, cooked comfort food, and binge-watched The Queen's Gambit. Frank got an email from his mom's church congratulating him on how well he organized her funeral. Krisha would be willing to work at a funeral home. Frank imagines a “Brook & Murphy” funeral business. Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep.
